Smokin' Joe's BBQ Chicken Sandwich
David E.

My wife and I met up with some family here tonight, and let me tell you, round two was just as good as round one. From the second we walked in, the staff greeted us like we were long-lost cousins (the kind you actually like). It was the first visit for the couple with us, and our waitress went full-on professor mode--breaking down the menu like a college lecture, but way more fun. She even explained the colors and textures of the dishes like we were about to paint with our food instead of eat it. I can already see this place turning into Bama game day headquarters--with TVs everywhere, a pool table waiting for bragging rights, and not one but two bars to keep things lively. Prices stack up about the same as other spots in town, but the food? Way better. The Smokin' Joe's sandwich and fries didn't just hit the spot--they rented the spot and threw a party on it.

Hot chicken melt

First time going here. First impression, the parking is very limited but overall clean parking lot and up kept exterior (it's new). When you walk in, you can either go to the dinning area or the bar where there are pool tables and places to drink. We got seated right away and ordered apps and entrees together. Our food came out fast. The Buffalo chicken dip was good, but the portion of the chips to dip was off (too many chips and very little dip). The fries were okay. The fries did taste house made, but it lacked salt which is the main ingredient to house made fries. The cheese sauce on the fries was an interesting taste and texture. Bacon bits were fresh and it came with ranch. For the entree, I thought I was getting a patty melt with chicken, but instead it was a chicken filleted with a ton of cheese, house sauce and thick cut bacon. The chicken was cut great and had good grill flavor. Bacon was nice and crunchy! The cheese was a little too much for me. It had sliced cheese on both pieces of chicken and a lot of sauce on top. Personally, I think less is more. The collard greens were good and had a little kick to them. Overall, this place did not disappoint and I would definitely go back and get something new, just maybe without the fries.

The Regular BBQ sandwich.

It's a juke joint and the atmosphere matches. A couple of bars, pool table and stage for musicians. It was packed on a Friday night but didn't have to wait too long for a table. The service was quick and efficient. The menu had several options from BBQ, wings and burgers. All the menu items had creative names. We had The Regular (pulled pork sandwich) and the Miller G (classic smash cheeseburger). Both were tasty and came with heaping piles of fresh cut fries. The pork was tender and juicy. The burger had good seasoning and a nice flavor profile with the Jake's sauce. Probably need a second patty. We'll also substitute another side instead of getting two piles of fries. We'll be back soon. Looking forward to the meatloaf next time.

The crowd was lighter than usual, but the food was still top-notch. I went with the Buffalo Bird, and my wife ordered The Corbell--both with fries. I couldn't resist trying their special side tonight, the Oakra (yes, that's how they spell it!), and it was worth the laugh and the bite. Service can run a little slow at times, and tonight was one of those nights, but once the food hits the table, it's hot, fresh, and flavorful--hard to complain about that. The restaurant is always clean, spacious, and inviting. The patio was full this evening, so we grabbed a table inside, but we still enjoyed the great atmosphere. We love the live music on Thursday nights that carries through the weekend--it adds to the whole lakeside vibe. And speaking of the lake, the view of the water, boats, and docks makes for some prime people-watching (especially the rich folk pulling up in style). It's especially nice not having to fight the crowds in town--especially during a Bama home game! Overall, Southern Ale House Dockside continues to be one of our favorite local spots for good food, good music, and good times.

Stopped there with a friend for lunch on a recent trip to Gordo…read more First time for him, I've enjoyed the place several times. My friend and I both got the Country Fried Steak with the white gravy. Large serving, not over cooked the way a lot of places prepare it. Beef was tender with a light breading, making every bite a perfect combination of meat and breading. All side each of us had were favorable. I think the creamed corn will be one of my new "Go To" at Blue Plate. My friend order an appetizer of onion rings. They were definitely not from Sysco, they were very crisp with the perfect amount of breading. My only issue at Blue Plate is they only serve corn bread, and I'm not a big fan of corn bread, but this time I tasted theirs, and it was like potato chips, I keep going back for more. It was buttery and soft with the perfect amount of crust. My friend wanted to know when we're going back to Gordo. Said he could eat here every day.

Apparently, half the town had the same idea because the parking lot looked like a Bama tailgate minus the tents and the yelling. We walked in and found ourselves about twenty deep in line--but hey, that's how you know it's good. Thankfully, since it was just the two of us, we scored a table in about ten minutes. Others... well, they might still be waiting as I write this. It's been a while since our last visit, and I noticed the menu's slimmed down a bit--but honestly, the food's leveled up. I went with the blackened catfish, turnip greens, and creamed corn, and let me tell you, that creamed corn was off the chain. Hot, buttery, and so good it could make you forget your own name. Everything came out fresh, seasoned just right, and hit the spot like a dart in a bullseye. Now, let's talk about that complimentary cornbread. Fluffy, golden, and just sweet enough--it's the kind of side that could run for mayor and win. I'm proud of myself for showing a little restraint today and not asking for seconds. (Believe me, it took Olympic-level willpower.) Our waitress was hustling like a Bama walk-on trying to earn a scholarship--fast, friendly, and somehow always smiling. Service: A+. Prices? A little higher than I remember, but that seems to be the new normal for a meat-and-three these days. Only downside--we got seated right by the door. Every time it opened, we got a blast of fresh air and a few curious stares. Folks walking in got a front-row seat to us eating like it was the "Welcome to Blue Plate" exhibit. But when you roll in at peak hour, you take what you can get. All in all, great food, friendly folks, and a true taste of Northport hospitality--just next time, I might wear sunglasses so I don't feel like part of the lunchtime attraction.

If you've never had meat (or VEGGIES!) cooked on a BGE, it will change your life. This fact alone will bring me back to try other things. Before I get into the meal, my only real complaint was that they only had a soda machine and tea. I had brought my mother along, and she already had lunch and wanted just to sit and chat. As it was a very cold day she was gonna order a coffee and they don't offer anything hot! It's definitely an opportunity to expand here even if it was just so simple as putting a Keurig machine in the back. I had the Buffalo Chicken Wrap. It is served with grilled chicken in a grilled wrap and cheddar cheese. If there was a buffalo sauce, I didn't taste any. I was a little disappointed in the wrap. The flavor didn't really stand out as being cooked on the Big Green Egg. The cheese wasn't really melted, which can be a common problem with shredded cheddar cheese, but it also didn't really have the buffalo flavor that I was looking for in a buffalo chicken wrap (maybe it was a Toledo Ohio wrap I don't know just not spicy. ) It served with a side of ranch which I juiced up with some Cholula and that helped. I i'm not knocking the quality of the food because it was good. It just didn't live up to the expectations I had in my head based on the menu description. It also came with a side, which I chose the broccoli salad. This was nicely done with bacon, I believe some quinoa and the broccoli was chopped up nicely so you didn't have huge chunks. Also, it wasn't overly sauced so that would make it runny. Overall I give the property four out five stars. Also, the flavor of the whole meal was fine. Good size portion and good value for your money.

Yesterday, we made our usual post-church stop at The Front Porch, our go-to lunch spot for years…read more It's become part of the Sunday routine -- church, then comfort food. One of the perks of getting out a little earlier than most congregations is that we usually beat the crowd. But lately... I've noticed there isn't much of a crowd to beat. Once upon a time, this place was packed to the gills -- every seat filled, people waiting at the door, conversations buzzing louder than the tea urn. Now? Not so much. I can't quite figure out why, because the food is still solid -- classic Southern meat-and-three done right, quick service, and prices that are nearly impossible to beat. Three of us ate for under $40, that includes the tip. The restaurant is always clean, the staff friendly, and the service fast and attentive. You can tell they take pride in taking care of their customers. The portion sizes, however, might need a little "study session" -- not stingy, but not exactly "Sunday dinner at Grandma's" either. And while I appreciate the effort, the number of bowls used for each side could start a small dishwashing marathon. The salad could use some love -- a couple more diced tomatoes (maybe even two whole dimes' worth!) and another slice of onion wouldn't hurt. As it stands, it's more of a "lettuce bowl" than a salad. Now, onto the chicken dressing -- a fan favorite of mine. Today's version was still tasty but leaned a little dry. Nothing a bit of gravy therapy couldn't fix. All said, The Front Porch remains a dependable, budget-friendly, home-cooked stop that checks all the Sunday boxes -- good food, quick turnaround, and the comfort of a familiar place. Here's hoping the crowds find their way back, because this porch still deserves a full house.

I didn't even check my box until I had got home because I had came in to eat before, on the inside and they had gave me a full plate so I then call and they ask if I want to speak to the manager which was a girl that was very rude, she had to have known who I was because my stepdad had worked in the back at this restaurant as well, and they were so mean to him even after they knew he was visually impaired. But this woman had told my stepdad that she had knew me, which she is about 5 years older than me and I have no idea who she is so i had a feel it was that same woman who had hung up on me when I had asked if I could get a refund. I had also talked to the owner about this situation and all he said was "well no one left a note so" like it had been my fault the employees and the assistant "manager" didn't do her job. I hate to make this review as many other WAITRESSES in there are very sweet!

If you know downtown Tuscaloosa, you know getting into Urban Bar & Kitchen usually requires…read morepatience--and a willingness to stand around waiting for the doors to open. But spring break week flipped the script in the best way possible. Tonight, my wife and I met up with some good friends for a pre-retirement dinner, and with the college crowd scattered to the beaches, downtown felt like it belonged to us "seasoned locals" again. No lines, no crowds--just a quick call ahead and we were seated within minutes. That alone felt like a win. We started things off with the fried green tomatoes--a true Southern delicacy and, let's be honest, acid reflux's favorite dance partner. Worth it? Absolutely. These were hot, crispy, and full of flavor. The kind of dish that would make Grandma nod in approval. No shortcuts, just done right. For the entrée, I went with the UBK Pasta--blackened chicken, sausage, and shrimp tossed with corkscrew pasta probably crafted in a cast iron skillet. It came out hot and packed with flavor, carrying just the right amount of spice to keep things interesting without overwhelming the dish. Exactly how I like it. My wife stuck with a proven winner: the shrimp & grits. She's had it before, and once again, it delivered. Consistency matters, and this dish continues to hit the mark every time. Now, not everything was quite as smooth. Our waitress wasn't exactly channeling that warm Southern hospitality you hope for. Let's just say she wasn't "Miss Dolly" serving smiles with a side of charm. The service leaned a bit on the impatient side--subtle (and not-so-subtle) hints that our time at the table was up, including clearing drinks before we were even finished. At one point I joked about going to the restroom but worried I might come back to find my chair gone. Still, when the food is this good, it carries the experience. Urban Bar & Kitchen continues to deliver where it matters most--on the plate. The atmosphere was relaxed thanks to spring break timing, the food was as strong as ever, and the company made it even better. As for the service... maybe she was just ready for her own spring break reunion. Happens to the best of us. Final takeaway: Go for the food--it's consistently excellent. And if you can catch a quieter night like this one, even better.
