What can you say badly about this place? It's always stocked with everything you need from clothes to supplies. It's open all the time. The customer service is always on point and they are well staffed. The prices are competitive and the parking abundant. read more

The lack of customer service is at the top of the list. This staff working here including the manager Mike. They do not know where there inventory is, they do not know what the daily sales are and when you bring things to their attention they become argumentative and want to be the ones that are right instead of pleasing the customer. If you visit any other Big 5's you will quickly notice what the Ukiah store is lacking. When I walk into a store to spend my money I like to be pointed in the right direction not have to wander all over because no one working knows what you are talking about. Friendly greeting exchange at the door...but then it all goes down hill from there. Was super excited to pickup up a pair of running shoes. Hubby encouraged me to head over because of the quality and service they provide. He will be sleeping on the couch tonight. Yeah, it was THAT bad. I usually don't leave a store in tears, but today was the day....yay me!! I don't expect you to prop my foot on a velvet tassel lined pillow, but at least acknowledge me when I'm trying to get your attention. A little slight nod or perhaps "I'll be right there..." Instead, I got the look of pure annoyance by one of the clerks. Like she was ready to pull my soul out of my eye sockets kind of look. She was dealing with a super annoying customer (I get that) but please don't take your frustration out on me. So I sat there patiently...waiting annnnnd waiting. Perhaps she should look into another "profession" other than retail. Drill sargeant should be high on her list. The condescending "Ma'am?! Ma'am?! What. Size. Do. You. Need?" after I repeated myself twice. She brings me a pair which were the complete opposite of what I wanted. No big deal...but could she find it in a larger size? Apparently not. I then asked what she suggested for a running shoe in my size. Annnnnnd she responds: "I'm not bringing out every single shoe from the back!!" She then storms off to hide behind a stack of boxes. Me: "Ummm...I wouldn't expect you to..." Yeah....Awkward and super uncomfortable. I got out of there quick and will likely never return. Also phoned hubby....never listening to him again. The folks they have at the door seem a little over zealous with this covid stuff. I felt like a criminal trying to pick up something I needed. The guy was rude and seemed to not want to help me get what I needed or at least offer to seek an alternative item. Don't know why they've bothered to stay open at all. I'll gladly take my business to Santa Rosa once all this covid madness has been settled. read more

I usually like shopping at stores like this but I won't go back to this one if I can avoid it. I asked a simple question about an extremely common product (afterbite or sting stop) and the employee looked at me like I was insane and in a very rude voice told me (with a laugh) that NO, they do not carry that. I know of one other person whos had a similar situation to mine... Five years ago (thats right 5) i had been a regular shopper at the Ukiah Big5 for years.. One day i walk in and the manager walks up to me and says that i was in the store the previous day with a friend who had shoplifted and that i am no longer welcome in the store and he has it on camera..i asked to see it because he was wrong but he refused to show it.. I have only one friend in this town and he works for caltrans.. and i told him he was mistaken.. He then describes my alleged friend as having piercings and a tattoo on his neck..this is not my friend....The only friends i have who look like that live 3000 miles away in Austin Texas...But the manager insists that i was with this person and says he can have me arrested for not leaving when he asks..(which i know is a true statement because of classes i have taken in business management) ..i told him i was willing to shop with a store employee if this would allow me to shop there because i had grown to rely on Big 5 for fishing gear and aside from work fishing is pretty much my life..(my fishing has been almost unhealthy in that it has been the demise of my social life) but the manager says no and rudely directs me to the door. I didnt shop there for 2 years and then i figured i would try again..nopel! He was on me after i purchased some water shoes and was so impressed with the performance and price i went back the next day to purchase 2 more pairs and some hooks and line but he took them from my hands before i could pay and said to not come back...I was furious..i have a job and i garden and go fishing so im always dirty and i think the guy assumes im a homeless person because i prefer to walk my dog when i shop..(R.i.p Peyton who up and died on me two weeks ago)... This is the only reason i can come up with for this discrimination..i take alot of time in a store..often times i look and go home to read reviews of items then return to purchase them.. so thats why i was patient and waited 5 years before i cussed the guy out.. Obviously Time nor reason will remedy this so at that point he got an unfiltered venting of my frustrations.. I hope they know they chased off a person who spends $200 a month on fishing gear and about $500 a year on shoes and boots and random backpacking and camping goods put my spending at well over $1000 a year at that store..and i never took so much as a pen without asking.. I have only ever been accused of such a thing once and when i proved the store was mistaken they appologised and it was over..that was when i was a kid.. This is absurd and one would think supervised shopping would remedy..why would i want to shop there if i were guilty of anything knowing he had it on film. but how am i being punished for someone elses shoplifting? someone i dont even know?..i asked him and he said he was going to have me arrested for trespassing which, again is well within his power right or wrong.. too bad cuz i love shimanno fishing equiptment but i'll have to settle for higher priced Fenwick gear at Pacific Outfitters.. At least they appreciate frequent customers and sell better quality shoes.. too bad though...i like options..i hope big 5 follows radio shack cuz their management isnt any better. read more

Usually when I visit big 5 in ukiah not many employees go out of their way to help out. Just recently I had a great experience with an employee named Kiley I believe. This store feels like it is slowly putting itself out of business. It seems like you used to be able to buy more brand-name stuff at Big 5, whereas now I'm noticing that things like watches are made by complete no-namers. You just can't trust that, when there are a million ways to buy brand name stuff online. Service at this store is so-so; I usually find it annoying to try to get into a dressing room. I would be a fan if corporate could get their game on. It only takes one visit to the Big 5 website to get a feel for THAT situation... read more

After 4 months went on big hike & the entire sole on both boots started to peel off: no glue. took them in; manager owned to them being Big 5's but no refund, no exchange without receipt. I don't usually write reviews, but I felt the need to tonight as my experience was less than stellar. I came to Big5 after the gym with the intent to buy a couple new pieces of workout gear. I want to add I am wearing lulu lemon pants and everything else head to toe NIKE that I bought previously at this very store. I do not look sketchy. I was there looking through clothes for only a couple minutes before the cashier started following me around as if to keep an eye on me and when I said hello she just gave me an off look. Regardless, felt too much strange pressure and left without making a purchase (and I drove here solely for that purpose from Willits!) I won't spend my money anywhere I feel like the employees are being rude to me. I understand there may be shoplifting/sketchy people in town but I am not one of them. Overall: good products; standard pricing, but the manager should reiterate that the cashier/floor employees are the "face of the store" therefore should make an effort to be polite. read more
