When we went to check out, our coupon was rejected by the rude cashier. When I questioned her, she looked at it again and reluctantly gave us the discount. I've been to this location so many times and always seem to be the same outcome. Yesterday was my last time .The staff is absolutely un attentive. And act extremely annoyed when you ask for any help. Everybody just hanging out around the gun cases chatting it up like it's a high school lunch break and when you asked for help to find something that they seem annoyed that you interrupted their social time. This is how stores end up shutting their doors. I've been to the Ventura Big5 had amazing service there. I've been to the Lompoc Big5 also great service. This location absolutely needs to improve. Was there on 2/14/24, and what a horrible experience. Nobody paid any attention to my presence. Four, yes 4, employees were gathered around the gun counter next to me and never once gave me a glance. They were too busy chatting amongst themselves, and two of them were having some sort of a disagreement. I spoke up asking if anyone was going to help me, and one of them said he thought I'd already been helped. I informed him I had not, and that I was disappointed in their customer service. I asked for the manager. He said he's the supervisor and that they have another store in Ventura that might be better, and maybe I could go there. I suggested maybe he should go work there. This store is awful; please shop locally at Play It Again Sports!! Today: the staff was completely unknowledgeable about their inventory, sales, and ordering procedures. They used every excuse in the book and blamed corporate, their customers, and even Cox Cable for their lack ability to serve their customers. Their store is extremely disorganized and they have no one available with knowledge of their products. They even suggested I buy an item off of Amazon because it would be too inconvenient and untimely to place an order - no wonder brick & mortar stores are going out of business with such horrible service like this. I called this morning to verify some inventory. The website recommended I call ahead so I did. I was handed of to the store manager named "Nick". It's hard to describe the disappointment Nick was because I didn't expect his kind of behavior from a manager. He was rude, combative and not helpful. I had to place a call to Customer service on their 1800 number to get the answers I was looking for. They were very helpful confirming the information with a call back. I believe that one bad apple does not spoil the cart. I have had many pleasant interactions at Big 5. So I will be back. I do hope that the someone in management takes a carful look at Nicks temper customer service skill set. If not for the rest of his team I would not return. Selection is messy and not really that great. Stains all over the carpet and apathetic sales people who ignore you despite nobody else being in the store. But the kicker? Recently bought a few shoes and one pair pinched when I got it home and tried it on for more than a minute. Returned the one pair ONE DAY AFTER PURCHASE and was asked for my drivers' license to be given a refund on my credit card. I protested since I happen to know this is illegal in CA and was told by the manager that this was the way they did it. They wouldn't give me a refund without my DL#, even refused a store credit or exchange. So I begrudgingly ended up forking over my DL which they wrote down manually. WTF. Not cool at all. I regret doing this because who knows where that info ended up. And to repeat, this is an illegal practice in CA and for good reason. I had my original receipt, the shoes were full price, I had the same credit card I used and the item had it's tags on (the shoes were tied together with a plastic tag! No way I wore them.) read more

Love this place--always someone to help you find what you need and they have a great return policy, unlike some during Covid who make you feel like you are stuck with your purchase. Discount sports stores are hard to find these days. For that reason, Big 5 is an okay store. The place is packed with the full range of sports gear and apparel and shoes with a stock of everything you need for basic camping or hunting as well. It is well staffed and everyone seemed busy yet only a few customers in the store. I got the feeling most of the staff was training and I did have to track someone down that appeared to be the manager to help me find something. On this visit, I was checking out the fishing gear. While affordable, the gear appears to be mostly mediocre quality. But the prices are good. I managed to find a cheap compass that I realized I needed. Dang those impulse buys but at least I am headed in the right direction. I also intended to get a renewal for my fishing license but the few people in the store were waiting for that machine so I skipped out. I also remembered there is a small fishing supply business just down the road (that ended up being a much better choice for expert advice and gear) and got my license there without a wait. I would say Big 5 is good if you are apt to order something cheap online anyway and don't want to wait for 2 say shipping.  I personally would rather go to another local business. read more

This place has the best pricing (in my opinion) on sporting goods. I was able to get a decent ping pong table for $149! I purchased an adidas soccer ball for less than $13 Be on the lookout for some of their not so great products they carry, so always scan barcodes with Amazon's app, but for the most part, it's the prices that are awesome! And they always have sales! Just a few things I wish were differently is if the employees were more willing to help out a bit more. They kinda don't offer to help, but they are nice people once you get someone to help ya. Second, there is no form of organization here as far as the products go, so it will take a while to find things, if they have them in stock. Overall, this place is A-OK. I've been shopping at this store since it opened, most recently this week to purchase a Dodger's baseball cap. I knew on an item like that I would save money over a specialty sports fan stores. Some items are inexpensive and others overpriced. I recommend you cross check against Amazon on high priced items. The few shoes I've purchased over the years have all been seconds. You can tell by back stitching, the back heal not entirely attached etc. They have great lower line items for most sports gear. Once you reach any proficiently in a sport you will need a specialty store. For balls from golf to basketball this doesn't apply however. When it comes to this store you can get quality products or seconds, discount priced items or over priced ones. It really depends on what type of item you are buying. read more

Today I went in to big 5 off state street and was greeted nicely as I entered. As soon as I went over to the gun section to by ammo It turned into an interrogation. The employee was from the start very rude in the way he was asking for my information and negative the whole time. When asked for my ID he asked me to produce my birth certificate which I happened to have then asked if the gun was registered to the address that was on my license. I told him I wasn't sure as in most cases with most people there are moves in their lifetimes. He seemed frustrated that I did not know and frustrated that he had to run my ID. He then announced that I was declined and when asked gave me no good information on how and where to go to get paperwork in order so I could be able to buy ammo and finish my hunting season. My issue was his rudeness and the fact he had no desire to help me with info on where and how. I went down the street to a gun store and was able to get exactly what I needed, as well as being treated well. I have spent 10s of thousands of dollars at Big 5 through the past and will now never spend a cent there. Big 5 should get out of the gun business if their employees are treating those interested in purchasing in that department like this. read more

I had a run in with a few employees working the store. One employee was extremely rude as she slammed my daughter's suit on the counter and said she'd have to do a price check so she'd get to it after she rang up some of the items. PISS POOR customer service! She was also rude to my sister in law when inquiring about a tent. If you're that unhappy, get out of customer service. I'll NEVER go back to that store. Have been shopping here since this store opened many years ago. They have some really good sales, especially in November and December. If they happen to be out of what you came in for, they will try and track the item down in their computer to see what other store has it in stock and have it transfered for you (can take a few weeks) but at least you get the item and of coarse they honor the sale price. They pretty much have it all when it comes to sportinggoods and even somethings you wouldn't expect them to have. Nice people and lots of parking in the shopping center. read more

Came in to buy a knife. After about 5 minutes of waiting at the counter, I was informed by the manager that he had locked his keys to the cabinet in the office, but that another manager was on his way. Cool, no problem. Wait about another 5-8 mins, and see a gentleman who I perceive to be the other manager, and ask if he is, indeed, the manager with keys. The manager who initially approached me approaches me again, this time to inform me that the manager I've been waiting on is actually in Goleta, and it would probably be best to come back later. I mean, it's not like that pertinent information could have been disseminated during our first conversation, right? Today I went to Big 5 to get a mask and snorkel and some heavy bag gloves the young lady that was working there at the cashier said she didn't know where those things were because it was her first day so I found the things and when I went to purchase them she had a hard time operating the cashier credit card so she called the manager Ryan Myers Ryan Myers was able to do it so after 10 minutes of wasting time we got my purchase done when I exited the store Ryan followed me out and wanted to speak to me I said I'm out of time so he very rudely Told Me Not to Come Back to Big 5 Goleta..... I hope in the future he takes more time to train his new people and maybe I hope in the future he takes more time to train his new people and maybe big 5 management will read this and replace Ryan Myers because he shouldn't be following anyone into the parking lot stalking them. read more

Living down the street from Big 5 makes it a pretty convenient stop for anything sport related. Have been shopping here for a few years and have never had cause to be upset. I've purchased fishing poles and other fishing gear here and while the staff may not be the most knowledgeable fishermen in the world they were more than happy to offer all the help that they could. Most of my purchases here were simple affairs but even purchasing a fishing license from the register was a breeze. Will return as often as they have what I need. read more

They advertise great prices, but whenever I try to buy one of the items allegedly on sale, they do not have it in stock and have no expectation of receiving any.
