Cool little place nestled downriver. Went for lunch and we were the only people in the joint besides the employees. However, it made for a pretty chill experience. We made it In time to enjoy both the lunch and dinner menus. Lunch menu just had some more sandwich selections which is what we decided to have. I had the Jonny Applebrie, essentially a grilled cheese with Brie and sliced apples. My beau had the Cuban, made with Dearborn ham. Both were excellent choices. Also, they had a little happy hour special that included $3 pints of any Michigan beer. Kind of a cool concept. I had the Blake's cider which was part of the deal and it was great. Really good service and nice ambiance. I imagine this place will be crazy for the Oktoberfest party they are hosting September 25, 26, 27...I'm hoping to make an appearance! Bartenders pouring beer into wet, warm glasses ruins beer. It looses the bubbly and affects the taste. Such a rookie mistake and sad to see:/ We sat at the bar and gasped in horror watching them flash-wash glasses and then immediately pour beer into the sopping wet, warm glass. My Cherry Wheat was warm and flat, as was my husband's 312. The ambiance and service was awesome. I wish they'd serve beer in dry glasses, then they'd get 5 stars from me. read more

After all reviews I had to try. Wonderful service. Actually best thing about trip. A very good Potato Cucumber soup with fresh dill on top. Mushroom Spatzle A little bland for my tastes but good ingredients and fair portion. And then my disappointment. I ordered "The Sweaty Pig" Pulled pork topped with spicy slaw. I guess I hoped for something that didn't taste like canned pork. No sauce of any sort other than the slaw. I didn't find it spicy but rather loose and sort of sloppy. It was very out of place based on the quality of other items. Community seating. You may meet some nice people. read more

We had been here before for their soft opening. Then, they were only serving beer and appetizers. We went back tonight to try something from their full menu. My husband had the Bierkeller Burger, my son had the fish & chips, and I had the Sassy Dame. Both my husband and son enjoyed their food. My sandwich was just 'meh.' Not much flavor, and the bread it was served in was super greasy and tasteless. The 'spicy coleslaw' that was served with the fish & chips tasted as simple (and disgusting) as cabbage in milk. Very lackluster. I had higher hopes for this establishment. I will not be frequenting this place. read more

Love this place! I went here with my girlfriend the other day and food was amazing! Beef tips were great! I loved the red peppers that went with it. The loaded chips were the best! Amazing taste and cheese was great. We also had the pretzels which were soft and tasty. I also came here for brunch and well and the buffet is great. I can't eat pork but they did have corned beef which was a plus. The service is always fantastic. We will be back! read more

One word to describe this place----EXCELLENT! Today was the first time I had been here, in fact I was unaware a German place like this existed. It's not incredibly big but still perfect. Decent sized bar with many beer choices, great food. I had the chicken and waffles and was quite impressed. The flavoring on the chicken was delicious. Often times the chicken is just chicken tenders or friend chicken. The breading was very tasty. This is place that could be easily passed and doesn't seem like it fits in the area. The service can't be overlooked either. Server was friendly, and kept my refills coming. read more

Food was excellent. I had a chicken sandwich that I had them add ham to. The rest of my party had potato pancakes and the cinnamon apple kielbasa. Being a holiday it was nice and quiet. A couple of things that keep me from giving it more stars. I understand it is geared towards beer but a smaller portion menu for kids would be nice. We made do with sharing so it wasn't a big deal. The other pain dealt with the jukebox. If people pay money for their songs the bartender shouldn't be skipping it just because "omg I hate this song". In a nutshell, great food. A very fun place to eat and drink. This is the old Gerhing's Lounge. Picnic style seating with some bar height tables, large bar and great beer selection won't leave you wanting. The food is good and fun with their twist on American and German classics. I will definitely be back. read more

We made the trek to Bierkeller after looking at their German menu on Yelp. We were disappointed when the waitress mentioned that the new kitchen manager is removing some of the classic german dishes off the menu and adding more American food. The Hefe is amazing though! read more

Excellent choice of craft beers! Love their flights (3 or 6 generous snifters of your choice). They have great appetizers- my favorite are the German spring rolls and the chips with dip. I haven't had much from the dinner menu, but my husband had the German tacos and they were pretty good. Friendly staff, and great German atmosphere! Amazing. Went here for date night after checking out the yelp reviews. Remembered that we had been here before in the past and had a relatively positive experience. This time we ordered corn beef spring rolls, onion rings, chicken grilled sandwich, and specialty sandwich and everything was absolutely amazing. 3.5 stars here. Good meal at a noisy beer joint. Be aware that though they want you to think it's a German menu, the food is, for the most part, not. They have spaetzle, schnitzel, and one dish with kielbasa but there are no other menu items I would consider German. Why no sausage plates-kielbasa, brats, wursts, etc. Gotta have these to really be a German restaurant. I don't do beer so I can't attest to the number of German suds but I did enjoy a tasty peach cider. Our food was quite good and seems clear the kitchen knows what it's doing. My wife had a very nice Rueben sandwich served with run of the mill chips. Great portion of corned beef with nice balance of sauerkraut and Russian dressing. I chose a large garden salad that was above average due to its freshness and the inclusion of sliced cucumber which you don't see every day. To add to that I ordered something I love but you don't see very often, Scotch Eggs. Hard boiled egg encased in sausage, breaded in some cases, then baked (or fried). These were very well done compared to some I've had. Two of these, sliced in half and drizzled with a light mustard sauce. Also topped with some smoky bacon bits. Would definitely order these again. Negatives were the intense volume of the music in the night were were here. Difficult to communicate with anyone. Also the service on our visit was spotty. Only came sporadically and needed to flag him down a couple of times as he wizzed by without a glance. Real potential to be better with a few tweaks. read more

Another great bar for the downriver!! I can't believe it's going so well for such a new bar. The owners really did a great job. I love the american bar with the german flair. It's a great concept and makes it a place you can frequent often. The picnic style tables are great, especially if you come with a large group of friends. It's has some big TVs, but not overdone. The atmosphere is great; the decor is not too much over the top but not a hole either. It's comfortable!! The servers are nice and attentive without the overdone german outfits that you may expect. Super fun. This place is great! We came here on a whim date-night and will definitely be coming back, a lot. The seating is picnic style and a bar. Every night at 9 they have an official 'toast master' give a toast and announce a couple of shot specials that was an element of surprise that added to the atmosphere in a really good way. The food menu is relatively simple but do not let that fool you, the food is so far beyond the 'bar food' you typically see, great food and perfect portion size. The beer menu includes a variety of styles from several different locations around the US and some from German. I couldn't decide so I picked a 6 option flight, for someone who likes variety (mostly because I hate the decision making process), the flight is the way to go! Great atmosphere, fun staff, delicious food, and cold brews. Couldn't ask for more, looking forward to our next visit already! read more

Stopped in here around 6:30 on a Friday, after an unsuccessful trip to the thrift store. We found a spot at the bar, and the waitstaff was super attentive and very friendly. The beer menu includes 30 taps, which is fantastic for downriver. As a beer snob, I wish they had a few more Michigan options on there, though the german beers were well-represented, and available in liters! Tons of size options, and all reasonably priced. the food menu is also reasonably priced, and with some serious sandwiches, burgers, spaetzel, appetizers, and desserts. My friends split an appetizer and a spaetzel, and left stuffed. I had a sandwich with sweet potato fries, which was more than satisfying - the ingredients were high quality and worthwhile. My fries were a bit soggy, which was a bummer, but still delicious. though this isn't anywhere near where I usually drink, I would come back for a bite and some beers. I took some time to decide if I wanted to come here. I'm glad I finally came. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The place is small but it works. I like the vintage decor. There are plenty of tv's today see multiple games. I ordered the chicken and waffles. It was pretty good. I would get it again. The other items in the menu were also interesting. I will try something different when I come back next. My 4 yr old daughter got the grilled cheese. It came with ham and was very good. I thought that was a standout dish. The onion rings were also very good as well. Since I don't like beer I can't speak for it it it looks like they have plenty of variety. They also had other types of drinks that looked good. It is exciting to see a place like Bierkeller open in this area. They know what they wanted to do and they are staying true to their vision. We only had some appetizers but they were delicious and well executed and the beer list, for this geography, is phenomenal and exceptionally well priced. They also have some great specialty drinks. I have probably been to Bierkeller more than ten times, and it's ALWAYS wonderful. It has an amazing beer selection, as the draft list is always changing and there are various styles available. Service is fantastic, I never have to wait long to be served and the staff is very friendly. Prices are extremely affordable and the atmosphere is much cozier than any other bar Downriver. My only complaint, which will not be a complaint for many others, is that it's basically impossible to eat anything other than fries and salad if you're vegan. If you're a vegetarian there are a few options, but I'm often out of luck in terms of eating a real meal. That being said, their house salad and sweet potato fries are delicious and I can often make a meal out of them! My omnivore friends all really like the food, especially the brunch. I realize they specialize in German food which basically by definition contains meats and cheeses, I just wish there was at least one actual meal option for people dairy allergies/dietary restrictions. read more

We headed up to MI to spend a few days with our friends in the greater Detroit area and they brought us to Bierkeller. It had a nice vibe with typical pub food on the menu. The bratwurst is what you want to get. I got a burger with a brat on top, and the brat was the best part. The burger was ok, but the brat was super tasty. My wife wasn't too hungry and ordered the brat sliders with grilled onions and green peppers. They looked amazing. Overall, a friendly place with good pub food. read more

Last night (Cinco de Mayo) was my first time here, and everything was great! Started off with a Margarita, and it was really good. Too good. Then I ordered a burger and fries, cooked to order...yes! Both were excellent. Loved the pretzel bun and onion straws. After that, I ordered a raspberry peach Margarita, and that was also very tasty. They had a great mariachi band there, and it made it festive and fun. I will be coming back to try the fried apple kielbasa. I went with a friend, and I know our husbands will love the place. I am giving this place 5 stars because of nice, interesting beer list, incredible nice wait staff, great food and nice atmosphere. but the PLACE IS JUST TOO DANG LOUD! I'm not gonna knock off any stars for that tho cause I think you should go see for yourself! Maybe you like it loudish! It was just cause there was a live singer maybe. I am sort of older too. So I'm keeping with my 5 star theme and saying you should go here. My husband got a delicious hard cider. I got a sampling of 3 beers, they are just sold by the piece. They print a list of what they have on draft. It seems very organized, but just ask the first time you go to get your bearings. We got the pretzels, very delicious. Wish we could have gotten someone to shoot the side of whole grain mustard but alas, no. My friend got eh delicious fish and chips and it was not overly breaded. We both thought it was well done. My other friend got a burger. I.... forget, I'm sorry. I don't know how the burger was. The staff was so friendly, checking on us often! but not overly and not making us feel uncomfortable. We stopped at the Bierkeller for an early dinner today after visiting a friend. We yelped this restaurant and it had a four star rating. We started with the 3 pretzels with cheese and grain mustard,very good. My wife ordered the chicken paprikas bowl which was huge and she liked it. My sister-in - law and I ordered the chicken on spatzels with Brussels sprouts. The sprouts were good,well flavored .The chicken should have been pounded thin and then lightly fried in butter but that was not to be. The breaded chicken was deep fried and just ok,but my spatzels were dried out and not very warm. The crowning problem was the sauce which topped the chicken. It was a green cream parsley sauce with some strange herbs in it. The parsley was so strong it overwhelmed every bite. This chicken was 13.00 and not worth it. I know from over 200 reviews that someone out there likes this food but I was disappointed. A squeeze of fresh lemon over a thin pan fried piece of chicken was all that was required. Service was good but we won't be back. read more
