I bought an inner tube for a flat and decided to have them replace it. The mechanic tried to remove the wheel without unhooking the gear cables and thus pulling on the cables with the wheel removed. After about a minute, he called for help. They still never unhooked the cables. They were able to replace the inner tube, but I wish they just said upfront that they didn't know how to work on my bike instead of trying to figure out on the fly and potentially damaging the bike. I went home and watched a quick video about how to remove the tire. It's not very complicated. I wouldn't come back here for a repair based on this experience. read more

I'm out on a bike ride tonight and my chain snaps unexpectedly, one of the links failed and what once was a proud circle is now a sad floppy line. I was a couple blocks from bicycle therapy and although they had closed about an hour ago I figured there may be a technician on site that could help me out. I walked to the store to see two workers fixing bikes and waved hello before calling the number listed on the door. The woman picked up and when I explained what happened she said they were closed and there's nothing she could do. Then she hung up. You don't have ten minutes to help repair the chain or even one minute to see if there's a chain in stock to sell me? This is beyond bad customer care, this is bad business! For the owner, you get two stars because I've had positive experiences using your free bike pump in the past and talking about your dog, Diego. But today's interaction was bad enough that I won't be doing any business with you again. You should have a chat with the woman who was working at 6pm on September 24th, 2020. I stopped over in a panic due to disassembling my bike (by accident trying to fix the wheel), and the owner was very courteous and helped me real quick in the middle of the street, in seconds, like a pro! I came into Bicycle Therapy today for a wheel related issue. Except it wasn't for a bike but for a giant dog stroller that my 70 pound pittie gets around in while she's recovering from surgery. I can't speak highly enough about this place and the people who work here. Not only did they let my pup in (note: they love dogs here!) but they treated both of us like old friends and took such great care of getting the popped tire on her huge stroller replaced. The woman who was working with us (I'm so sorry I can't remember your name) was super knowledgeable and even had a backup plan in case they didn't have the size I needed in stock. Best bicycle shop in the area. The service is impeccable. It's a small shop but the owner is hands on. They help me build a cannondale tri bike in record time for a race. The email communication was always on time and clear and the charges were explained in detail. Even though this location is not the most practical I'm willing to drive there just because they care and they know what they are doing! If you live nearby it feels like the best neighborhood shop! Just in case all the awesome reviews here on yelp are not enough to sway you, here is another one. The guys and gals of Bicycle Therapy are the best. They are professional, helpful, dedicated, and just plain cool people. I had something in my tire a few months ago that was preventing it from holding air. I took my bike to them twice and they cleaned out the wheels for me but the issue persisted. On my third trip (free of charge), they found a small piece of glass that was the source of the issue. They gave me a $10 Gift card for my "troubles" (as if it were actually burdensome stopping in to ask for help) and sent me and my fixed bike on the road. I would give this place 5 stars but I think some of their larger projects can get a little pricey (I once saved $75 by deciding to go to a different bike shop to get all new wheels after my original wheels were stolen). They will give you a quote and encourage you to shop around or suggest cheaper fixes though which is nice. The shop is clean, they have everything you need, and the staff is great- What more do you want? read more

I now have my very own bike shop to love. Excellent service from the mechanics to sales staff. Everyone here seems honest and helpful -- they won't sell you something you don't need. 1. I went in planning to get my bike serviced ($60), which I've neglected to do since I got the bike (about 2 years). A mechanic checks out the bike & determines that the main problem is my back wheel, which needs to be replaced ($40) or rebuilt ($30). I have coaster brakes, and the braking's been slow, so that sounds about right. But, I came in planning to get it fully serviced, so I ask again about maintenance. Mechanic tells me the bike is pretty much good, that it doesn't really need servicing, that it'll feel much better after I replace the back wheel. So I got that done, and he was right -- the bike feels great now. I really appreciate that the mechanic just honestly told me what my bike needed & didn't try to sell me more than that, even though I went in expecting to pay for it. Instead, he was helpful and educational -- an excellent experience. 2. Also went in looking for bike helmets -- wasn't sure if I needed to replace the one I already had. Salesperson was honest, patient and matter-of-fact, explained the differences between various helmets, and offered to look at my old helmet to see if it needed replacement. He could've sold me a helmet I didn't need, but instead, it seemed like he wanted me to get what I actually needed (even if that might be nothing!) I can't express how great it is to have a bike shop where staff are cool, friendly, and honest. While waiting, I observed another customer coming in and talking with a mechanic... he was obviously a repeat customer who trusted the staff. Bicycle Therapy seems like more than a shop -- it's a little community of people who really care about bikes and taking care of bikes. The people working here are really friendly and genuinely try to help you with your bike. I had all my housing and brake cables changed here, and the work was really solid. My bike rides new and I definitely averted a potentially dangerous situation with my brakes not working. Might be pricier compared to other shops, but the quality of work is really what you pay for. They take credit card, which is a huge plus. Also a really convenient location right next to South Street. read more

The people who work here are really nice and it makes me look forward to coming to Bicycle Therapy. I'm a middle aged commuter bicyclist. At other shops I've often felt uncomfortable because I'm not young, bearded, pierced, tatooed and a cool pro biker (well, actually I am bearded but its short gray and academic, not long and hipster). Not so here. Even though everyone working here is young and clearly into bikes, they are really nice and polite and explain things to me without condescension, and don't make me at all uncomfortable for not knowing a SRAM from a Shimano from a Campagnolo (which I don't - maybe a Campagnolo is a new kind of Italian cocktail, related to a Negroni or Cardinale?). And they do really great work - I get my bike tuned up every year or 2 here. Just this past week, I picked it up and riding home I thought "oh yeah, THIS is how its supposed to feel!" The workers seem very knowledgable and professional. They get things done on time when promised. And they don't upsell me things I don't need (like responding to my query about replacing my tires by telling me that the tires are fine even though I've had them for a while, maybe next time). I wish taking my car to the auto mechanic was like this! The store is clean neat and organized. I've only had service done here and bought occasional accessories, so can't comment on anything related to bike sales. But I really like this shop and look forward to coming here. read more

If you've always wanted a bike shop with the customer care and sense of community of a stolen bike on craigslist, Bicycle Therapy is for you. After buying a brand new bike here, everytime I've walked through the door I've felt like all they see you as is walking $$ signs. They don't care if they sold you a defective bike that every local bike shop says they should have fixed for free (broken gears, of course they blamed me) and let's not forget the time they installed a bike basket that the screws fell off literately the day after, and they charged me $15 for redoing that. If you like that feeling of being expected to pay %40 of your bikes worth when you walk in for an annual check up for the bike you bought from them, then by all means, this place is for you. read more

Bicycle Therapy is the best bike shop I've been to the area for sure. The staff is super friendly and truly seems interested in my needs. I've stopped by a couple times without notice and was able to get my chain put back on or my seat tightened. Pre-COVID I would occasionally stop by to get some free air as well. I bought a bike from there and talked with the person for over a half hour figuring out which type of bike would be best for me. There are two downsides with this place however. The first is that they can get pretty busy so if you need something that's more than just a quick fix, it can sometimes take a week or so until you get your bike back. The other negative is the pricing or both their goods and services. I'd recommend getting an estimate before you commit to getting work done on your bike. If you need anything from lubricant for your chain or locks, helmets, etc., you'll definitely want to look on amazon or another place to find reasonable prices. read more

When I purchased a wheel for $180, I expected it to last me awhile. Unfortunately, it suffered a premature death when the hub flange sheared off. Without any hesitation or haggling, Bicycle Therapy offered to handle a warranty return after a year; they even spent the time to look up an old sales record from a legacy POS system. I called later about the return, and at the mere suggestion that it was taking awhile, they offered me a free replacement the same day, presumably at their own expense. I am not a huge cyclist but my daughter and I ride recreationally, and are beginning to ride more as she seems to really have gotten into it. This is a great shop. Over the years, I have bought several bikes here, and they sell great bikes. They did a simple service on one bike during the pandemic, and they could not have been more professional and helpful - in addition to the issue, they even gave the bike a quick check and tightened some things up that I didn't realize were loose. Brought my bike in for a simple tube fix. Put it on my bike rack, drove home and then later that night it popped after no riding and merely hanging on my wall. Brought the bike back, explained what happened and the tech fixed my bike on the spot, no charge and didn't ask for any prior receipt for services. Really nice guy. Let it be known, this guy is not the norm. Its more of a no nonsense, strictly business place that could maybe work on being a bit more friendly towards its customers, especially for an $18 tube exchange. I really want to give these folks a better review but the fact of the matter is that they're terrible. Don't go here. Go to Bicycle Revolutions or Fairmount Bike or somewhere else. First off, they sell bikes that have little practicality in a city like Philly or really any city at all. Aluminum or carbon fiber Treks and Specialized are great for road racing. They're not great for transporting groceries or getting to and from work in any form of weather. That's less of a comment on BT's skills and more on the kind of shop they are. As for their work, I have brought my bike in here and I've brought my girlfriend's bike in here and I'm just disappointed. I used to work in a bike shop back in Seattle and believe strongly that any bike brought in (and left for maintenance) should get a good glance over. Bicycle Therapy doesn't seem to get that principle. Also, their work is shoddy. I brought in my girlfriend's bike to get new brakes installed because I didn't have time to do it. They had only one thing they had to do and they still screwed it up. Two of the four brake pads were not properly toed. They also apparently didn't take the time to notice that the handlebars seriously drag to the right and the derailleur housing is shot. Did they need to mention that last part? No, I suppose not. I know how to fix a bike so if I crashed because the bike wasn't set up properly I would considering myself at fault. Most people don't know anything about their bikes. So the fact that Bicycle Therapy doesn't care to consider such things and advise their customers is troubling. TL;DR Bicycle Therapy should be avoided in favor of better bike shops. read more

These are the reasons i love bicycle Therapy: -Employees are knowledgable, welcoming, honest, and very, VERY handsome. -They work quickly and are reasonably priced for all bike services. (flat tire - $11. awesome.) -The shop feels comfortable and homey; I never feel like a "stupid girl" being in there. -Free air 24/7. and now, the one negative, condensed in a haiku: elite cyclist air... quit acting like Lance Armstrong, else I'll slap yer face. All of the guys and gals at Bicycle Therapy are knowledgeable about bikes - you just need to find the right guy for retail or repairs (hint, the repair guys are generally working on bikes). They don't carry a ton of brands, but they do carry quality. Don't come here for a $100 Huffy. Come here for a quality bike, great service, and friendly banter. Come here if you want to watch the Tour de France and don't know what channel it is on. If you tell them what you want to get out of riding (basic transportation, road cycling, mountain biking, racing, etc.), they will help guide you to several appropriate choices. Then test drive. If you need air for your tires, there is a free air hook-up outside. If (when) you buy a bike here, do get the service plan for three years. That way you can get your bike tuned each year at the start of the season with no additional labor charges (other than unusual repairs - ask them in the store). If you have kids, they have a good selection of bikes, tricycles, helmets, etc. for the kids too. read more

Brought my bike here today for a tune up and was told I needed a new chain and cassette costing nearly $200. Brought it to Doctor Cycles for a second opinion and all it needed was a tune up. Now my bike is driving good as new! I've gotten flats fixed here before which were fairly priced. If you need more than the basics I'd recommend going elsewhere. read more

Cannot recommend at this point, but I will try to update and hope I can bump up the rating and recommend in the future, since people are nice. I purchased a new bike but a pedal fell off after a week. Never happened to me. I could have been injured seriously (could happen to you or your kid). I like the people, who are nice and seem knowledgeable, and would like to bump up the rating in the future, but if the shop cannot do the most basic stuff about bicycle, or not being careful in doing the most crucial/basic stuff about bicycle, I am not sure I can give more than one star at this point. They didn't sound too apologetic about what happened, which disappointed me as well. I purchased the bike to participate a bike race next weekend, but I am not sure I have my bike back in a week. I told them I want to have the bike repaired as soon as possible, and they promised me they'd contact me in the morning of Monday (I brought the bike in on Sunday), but they didn't call me or do anything on Monday... The service so far is very disappointing. So I might need to buy another bike (of course, from another shop), or rent... Basically the shop might cost me extra couple of hundred bucks for not being responsive to the trouble that their lousy maintenance caused. ******* update on April 28, 2015 ******* They did not call me for two days even if they promised to call me back yesterday. I called them, and found out that they did not seem to make any progress, and they tried to charge me for fixing the pedal and the crank for $200. This is ridiculous. I tried to convince them that it's not my fault that this happened. They seem to be convinced for now but let's see. They also promised to fix it by Friday, but I am not sure I can trust them at this point. I started finding another bike. read more

Minus the fact that they took off a kick-stand and kept it without mentioning it (and then I obliviously took the bike home without noticing), I have had wonderful experiences with them. It isn't inaccessibly expensive. They're smart and skilled dudes... who are NICE too. That is really something to praise. When looking for accessories such as helmets or baskets or bags, check this place out. I got one of those great multi-use helmets with the visor there and I get compliments from everyone. Sure, the helmet was a little costly but the benefits (and sweet fashion attention) hugely outweighs. So get on it! (both a bike and their services) read more

I just bought my first road bike (Specialized Dolce Sport) from Bicycle Therapy and it was a fantastic experience. I worked with Toby, a sales manager, and he walked me through the different bikes in my budget and even convinced me to go a step higher in quality while not going too far above my budget. They were able to do a package deal by throwing in pedals and some other gear and it really made the entire purchase absolutely worth it. This is a FANTASTIC local bike shop that is a block from me, so I'm incredibly happy that I was able to buy from them and will continue to go for service. I can't give them 5 stars, though, because their hours are not the best for people who work 9-5 during the week. That being said, they still do a great job and I was able to make it work. You -might- find them here... along with some condescending ultra-hip down-the-nose glances, but then again, you might instead find the resolve to just learn how to fix that ride yourself - ya dig? FYI - the issue i brought them was fixed by my old bike shop without a hitch. Bike Therapy? As the Beatles warned me long ago - I should've known better. When i hurt my bikes'feelings i'll think about letting them have a session with her. One day after being told my rim was "bent", as in damaged beyond repair, that no amount of tensioning would bring the wheel back into true, and that i would need to buy a new wheel, I spent my Saturday morning reading up a little on how to true a wheel, compliments of Sheldon Brown - and i did just that. I'll be riding my bike again tomorrow, no thanks to the "therapy" served up at this lame joint. Looks like the best thing they got going there is the free air. Hilarious. At least they didn't charge me, but then again, they don't charge for their air, and by the same token ought not charge anyone for the hot air they spew when presented with a potentially difficult task. If they wanted to fix it they could've, but they copped out cause it wasn't a no-brainer, and they'd rather keep that second hand free to waft in the smell of their own farts, instead of using that hand to get something done. Instead of me paying 30 or so dollars for the trueing, they felt fine telling me that i should go spend another couple hundred and buy a new wheel - it's like the patient who seeks treatment for an ingrown fingernail, and the doctor recommends amputation. This is the only bike shop I'll go to in Philly (after trying 2 other duds.) The people who work here are incredibly knowledgeable and incredibly friendly. They always ask before they do something to your bike-- I've gotten a couple of calls during tune-ups asking if I want them to fix something the cheaper way or the better way, and giving me a heads up about an impending problem. It almost feels like I've dropped my pet off at the vet and they call to tell me that she's okay! At least during the summer months there is a waiting period before you can get a tune up- you call them, and they give you a few options for when you can bring your bike (usually about 2 weeks from the time you call). You put down a deposit over the phone, then when the day comes you drop it off. They have always been on time in returning it to me. This place is great-- and well named for the service! read more

I've been going to BT for awhile now and they are always smiling and ready to fix my bike issues, which makes me feel relieved and less frustrated. No one can predict when things go wrong with your bike, and if it's your main ride around town, it can really mess up your day. However, the folks at BT are winners when it comes to customer service - they understand how much your bike means to you and will do their best to be speedy and precise when fixing it. Whether it's major work, like a wheel replacement or something minor, the employees here are here for YOU - and you will know that as soon as you walk in. They've put a water bottle holder on my bike free of charge and although I sold my previous bike that had the U-lock attachment on it, one of the nice gentlemen found an attachment in the store and put it on my bike for free. Now I don't have to ride with my lock on my handlebars, which was messing up the bike's alignment anyways. BT will always have my business. read more

Wanting to start biking in the city, I read great reviews about bike therapy so I decided to go and check out what they had. As soon as I walked in, I saw a group of smiling staff at the counter. One immediately approached me and asked if she could help me with anything. What I enjoyed most was that I told her I wasn't quite ready to buy a bike yet, but I wanted to start saving money to buy one and if she could help me figure out how much I would need to save. She was very patient, supportive, and provided practical advice the entire time. Most of all, she was friendly and didn't make me feel like I was wasting her time. At the risk of sounding redundant, I'm throwing in my hat for Bicycle Therapy as well. I'm a relatively novice cyclist, and everything these other reviews say about the nice and knowledgeable treatment from their staff is totally true. It's easily the tidiest and most well-lit bike shop in the city. I was looking to get a basic hybrid for my work commute and trips to the Wissahickon, and they outlined my best options and let me test-ride four different bikes on three separate visits (w/o hassling me) before I arrived at my decision. Several times I showed up right after work just before they were closing, and they never rushed me out the door. I spent a little more than I'd originally intended, but after a month of biking, I feel certain they helped me make the right choice -- I'm one happy camper on my bike. I scoped out numerous bike shops in the city, in the process discovering how blessed Philly is for mostly eschewing big chain stores and championing its numerous fine independent bike shops. Trophy Bikes comes in at a close second- their staff are just as professional and knowledgeable-- but you can't beat Bicycle Therapy for panache. And their turnaround time is typically faster than expected. Kudos to the friendly owner, Lee, and his awesome staff (esp. John and Jen up front and superhelpful tech guy Andy in the back) for fueling my newfound liberation from high gas prices and gridlock! read more

Took my old bike in for a tune up and also got new grips and new fenders. I had to take my bike back for adjustments to the fenders and the grips. Also, after the tune-up, the chain now slips when it didn't before. Overall, I wish I was more positive on this review. Fast courteous service! Brought my bike for minor repair and was greeted immediately by the service staff. The tech quickly assessed and confirmed the cause of the problem and fixed it on the spot. The entire staff seems to exude an attitude of respect for customers, expert riders and novices alike. This is refreshing since many bike shops make novice customers feel stupid, even if unintentionally. After moving to Philly, I had a bad experience with another shop, so I kept going to my favorite bike shop in NJ (for 4 years!). I decided to try Bicycle Therapy based on the positive reviews. Had a major bike repair that required the parts and expertise that they had. They fixed my bike sooner than they expected. At first, when I rode it after the repair, my gears were slipping. It appeared to be due to a mistake on their part. Due to the busyness of life, I didn't bring the bike back to the shop for this issue until exactly one month later. I was hoping they'd give me the benefit of the doubt anyway and fix it for free. Well, they didn't quite do that. They explained that the problem was due to a bent derailer hanger (which they had installed), that they install their derailer hangers straight, and that any number of things could have lead to its bending, such as leaning it against the wall. However, they compromised and took $5 off of a $15 repair. I think this is fair enough to still get 5 stars. The bike rode just fine after they straightened out the hanger. read more

I bought my bike here! It was awesome - the bike was going to be my birthday present, so I went in and even though it was pretty busy the staff smiled and greeted me and asked if they could help me find anything. I took a few minutes to carefully examine the bikes they had before picking out a few I was interested in and asked one of the staff a few questions about each to decide which best suited my purposes. They let me bike around the immediate area to get a feel for it and really make sure that it was the one I wanted, which was great! (Of course, they held onto a credit card to make sure I returned) In addition to the bike, I picked up a helmet and bike locks - and could've gotten sooo maany more accessories but stopped myself. I'm so glad that I live only a few blocks away so I can bring my bike back here whenever it needs to be tuned up, fixed, or have those other accessories I didn't buy installed...The super friendly and knowledgeable staff are the icing on this cake. It doesn't matter if you're totally ignorant about bikes or consider yourself a pro, Bicycle Therapy knows how to treat both! read more

This place is very competent and they didn't give me any attitude about patching up my Globe (which is not a great bike at all -- I bought it off Craigslist when I didn't know anything at all about bikes) after my brother crashed it and broke the front fork. The repair work and parts are generally pretty reasonable, and the turnaround time is decent -- considering they had to order a new fork and wait for it to arrive, it still took only about a week for them to get the bike all fixed up. The store definitely caters to the racing crowd, which I'm definitely not a part of. You may or may not get that vibe from the people in the store but it hasn't been a problem for me at all. They were definitely still friendly to me and my old Globe. read more

Pro: the shop treats you respectfully whether your a pro with a budget for a race bike or a schmo with a budget bike. great customer service. i always felt as if i received god value on repairs, and speedy turn around. Pro: Good hours, accessible location that's neither deep in the hood nor so entrenched in center city that you have to pay a fortune for parking. Mixed bag: they have tons of Specialized bikes, if that's your thing. Con? They say that much of the value of getting a bike at a shop is the fitting process. BT is light on the smoke and mirrors - which is fine by me because I know when a frame is too big/too small and i can figure out how to adjust the seat. That said, if your looking for that (phony) experience, there are other shops that will pretend better than BT does. Con: When you buy a new bike, they don't provide lifetime or even short term adjustments. Not that those adjustments are worth that much, but much of the "value" you read of on the forums of buying a bike from a shop (as opposed to saving money by buying a bike from Bikes Direct or Nashbar and then paying a shop $60 or so to set it up) is the after sale adjustments. Rather than include the post-sale service with the sale of the bike, they push you to purchase a "service plan". The price and service provided for their plan isn't much different than similar plans you can get from a big box retailer (Sports Authority, Dicks, REI, Performance), whether you bought the bike there or not, so whether its a good deal for you depends on your needs and convenience. Unlike the fitting, I think that adjustments have SOME value. In my case, I got a really good deal on a clearance model. Had I been shopping for a current year model such that other sellers would have the same bike at basically the same price, the lack of free adjustments may have swayed me elsewhere.
