I got a front flat yesterday on a ride. I was extremely bummed. I really needed to ride my bike (cue Queen). Fairmount Bicycle was the closest bike shop. I called to make sure they were open and could help, and someone answered the phone right away and was very kind and helpful. I walked my bike to the shop, and when I entered, I was greeted warmly and professionally. I disclosed that I really needed to ride my bike, and they understood and told me that they would try to salvage my ride. Thirty minutes later, my bike was ready, and they were once again very kind and helpful with the checkout process. And, they did in fact salvage my ride, for which I am so grateful. During the checkout process, another person with a flat came in. The staff was warm and professional toward this person. I heard someone mention a "community repair." I did not know what that was, but later, I looked up their website and learned more about the community repair fund as well as the ethos and history of the shop. What I read confirmed that these are cool humans doing cool things and supporting their community. I do not live in Fairmount, but because of my experience yesterday, I would definitely consider taking my bike there again. To the humans of Fairmount Bicycle, thank you so much! My partner and I easily rented bikes online a few days before our weekend trip to Philly. Staff was friendly when we went to pick up and drop off our bikes. My bike had a broken bell which I noticed before we left and the employee quickly replaced it for me. Bikes were extremely easy to ride which made for a pleasant ride on a day with 20mph winds. Our bikes had storage on the back which was perfect for placing our belongings. We look forward to renting from here again in the future. read more

I rented one of the 51 cm Janis Ventura road bikes and it was fine: the drivetrain seemed smooth and the shifting worked fine. The bike was equipped with Shimano entry-level Sora components, which had seen plenty of use, but they did the job. The usual issue with rental bikes applies: you're not going to get a dialed-in fit (handlebar width, crank length, stem length, stem rise, etc) so there's some compromise, but the 51 cm worked well enough for a 90 km ride, most of it with a local racer friend. My main issue was the saddle didn't quite work for me; maybe I needed it in a different fore-aft position, but I could have adjusted that. I did bring my own Speedplay pedals, which the shop happily mounted and later removed. Two downsides: 1. if you flat on the road, you're out of luck. So maybe think about packing flat-repair stuff in your luggage. 2. on my size, the bulky lock mount, which is not easily removable, was on the top tube and impinged on my legs when I stopped, although my thin thighs managed to clear it when pedaling. But I'd definitely rent from them again. Good bike shops are becoming an endangered species and while Fairmount is modest in its scope, it has an old-school feel which is nice. read more

Rented our bikes here on Saturday, August 26, 2023. The reservation process was easy and the bikes were ready when we arrived. The shop was busy when we arrived, but it took no time at all. I ride my bike harder than anybody, so it needs constant tune-ups. I took my bike to Philly Bikesmith and had an awful experience. A lady suggested I go to Fairmount Bicycles. I'm glad I listened, because they are the best bike shop. Everybody was so friendly and helpful. They answered all my questions. They tuned my bike like new. Don't rent a gravel bike from this otherwise solid shop (explanation and details below). This is a great shop for repairs and the staff is fantastic. I've been shopping here since the late '90s and I've had almost entirely good experiences. I hope Fairmount bikes is around for a very long time. That said, DO NOT rent a gravel bike here if you intend to use it like a real gravel bike. The one I rented had Shimano Sora components and was completely incapable of shifting smoothly on steep gradients. The tires didn't have much grip, and the ergonomics of the brakes combined with their poor performance made it impossible to ride in the drops on rough trails... I ended up completely switching my plans and using the "gravel" bike as a road bike. I eventually looked up the specs and the bike was not originally marketed as a gravel bike by the manufacturer lol Just a very specific warning for the next person. Where to begin? I live close to this shop so I use to go here for small things or to pick up some tubes or just little things. It's a poor experience with the side-eye, judgy , holier-than-thou attitude that the people working there have. If you get your bike fixed there good luck. I went in after a crash and needed a new derailleur but the mechanic said I needed a new chain, cassette, and basically a complete new Shimano 105. He couldn't get the parts for months, pre-pandemic, but said he could build it back for me and it would be virtually the same. Terrible idea. It did not shift well after and had so many mechanical problems that it just needed to be taken to a real shop. I do not shop here anymore for 2 reasons. 1. Uber cool, judgy, staff 2. This is my second visit with my old junker. I've had much trouble trying to buy parts for my 74 Schwinn Varsity conversion. Trouble because many shops within the city want to immediately sell me a new one. Or want to lecture about the dangers of riding a fixed gear. That's not what I get here. The staff has been more than helpful. They scour their parts bins looking for things to keep my wheels going. They're a busy shop and they apologize for it. Please guys, don't. You do a great job. Darn, I thought that I'd be first to review but Ryan P beat me to it. Finally, a bike shop in Fairmount! This cute little place just opened on 6/12/10 and we stopped in yesterday to take a look. It's a pretty small shop but they have at least a dozen mid-priced bicycles for sale (mainly of the practical variety for around town and errands), one wall of tools & accessories, and they do repairs. Just as it's difficult to find a good car mechanic -- it could be just as tough to find a trust-worthy bike mechanic. Many bike shops only recommend one option for repairs and don't care what you have planned for your bike or your budget. Fairmount Bikes gives you options and lets you decide what you want to do. Some places will charge $10 to spend 3 minutes changing a tube. Not here. All the labor prices I've experienced we're well worth what they were charging. I had one instance where they quoted me an incorrect price for a cassette. After they noticed, they charged me the list price for the cassette and took off the labor charge, which was nice. They're quick with minor repairs. I suggest dropping your bike off and getting a coffee or meal at the many nearby places along Fairmount Avenue. Most likely, by the time you're done eating -- your bike will be ready. This is a smaller bike shop that's focused on selling and supporting city bikes. Don't expect too many accessories for mountain or racing bikes. They also have some neat accessories you won't find at too many other bike shops. Random notes: I like the idea of preserving as much as you can with an older building, but their two-piece door is impractical for a bike shop. I'm a Philly newbie, and visited the bike shop today in search of my first bike purchase. I had so many questions, so many curiosities, and very limited knowledge of biking around a major city. Shelly and Jenni spent well over an hour helping me look at bikes, test them on the road, and carefully explained the ins-and-outs of bike maintenance and safety. Not to mention, they knew and cared about every customer who walked through that door..it was as if they make it their personal duties to treat their customers like family. It was an unbelievably positive experience. To say that I'm satisfied is hardly saying much. Purchasing my first bike was fulfilling and exciting, and I could not have asked for a better experience. If you are a bike commuter and need a solid, reliable bike shop, look no further. I've been a bicycle enthusiast my entire life. You know what that means? I have collected a select few bicycles that don't ever want to get rid of...That doesn't mean I don't want to change or repurpose them. That's where Fairmount Bicycles came in. I heard from a friend that they would not hesitate to transform my mid 90s steel frame mountain bike into a great city commuter bike. I discussed my requests with the mechanic and we were able to come up with affordable solutions that work. My experience was downright fun. That bike is now my primary ride. Since then I have special ordered all sorts of things- from orange pedals & grips, a tiny ortlieb messenger bag, particular flavor cliff bars, to drink powder mix. They don't charge me crazy fees just because they don't have exactly what I want in stock. If they can get it, they will gladly do so. I have all my tune ups done here now. Pricing is on par and my bikes always come back to me in the condition I expect- No grease stains on my grips or any of those annoying things that are easily overlooked by many mechanics. I can't say enough positive. I wanted to rent a bike to ride to Valley Forge on Monday. They are closed on Monday, they said come on by Sunday afternoon rent it and drop it back off on Monday because they'd be working in the shop even though closed. I did so. But I forgot a lock and I couldn't get my shoes to clip in. I stopped by in the morning for the lock and they put new cleats on my shoes. They even lent me an Allen wrench to adjust the seat. I then returned the bike in the late afternoon. Each time I stopped by, even though closed, they fixed a flat for someone in the neighborhood. Clearly entrenched in the community. Fairmount is not the worst, they have only decayed to the median, hence the two stars. I used to love Fairmount Bike. As an avid cyclist I recognize high quality maintenance, in the past I have vehemently recommended Fairmount until... My last three visits... I could have gone to Sears and gotten the same quality of bike maintenance service. Clearly they hired someone with an MBA because the up-sale on maintenance is "You need your wheel trued. It needs new brakes, The chain is out of spec. The cassette (sprocket) needs replacement." If half of the moving parts on my bike need to be replaced on a six month old bike I can't imagine how anyone can afford to keep a used bike in operation. When I picked up my bike after a maintenance my new brakes were loose, my rear cassette was still rusty. When I commented on the cassette they tried to sell me lubricant. i.e. you can lub it yourself. On my ride home the gears skipped i.e. they didn't lube the derailleur. Their response to my call was "bring it back." What I heard was "first trip is for payment, second trip is to do the maintenance." I was so disgusted with the lack of service that I will find another bike shop and not their new shop on Girard and 28th. Side note: If you want to support bike thieves buy used bikes... Otherwise buy new bikes from your preferred bike shop or used bikes from suburban garage sales. (Don't buy used bikes in the City as it is most likely a bi-product of a theft). In the city you can get a new bike at the same cost as a used bike. My last three city bikes (all of which were stolen) cost $350/$250/$225 brand new - I have spent more on locks then I have on bikes. If you don't bike much, use the city rentals until you are ready to commit to owning a bike. If you want to buy a used bike in the City - buy a used rental - they are typically a good value. read more

Dudes I aint gonna lie: i'm a big big meanie when it comes to bicycle shops. i'm so weary. I ask a lot of evil judgmental questions. It's a similar state to when I owned a car and I had to take it to the autoshop. I don't completely speak the language so I'm skeptically thinking to myself: "i'm getting ripped off right now!!!! i know it!!! oh really?! that's how much it costs to change a tire?!" etc etc etc,... did NOT get that from Fairmount Bicycles. And this review is from not even actually BEING at the store. OK, I know what you're thinking right now-- you're thinking-- how can you really review this place?! This is how: The future father-of-my-french-bull-dogs was sucking up to me [I think] and he took my bike in for me to get a tune-up. Also, he knows how deeply I furrow my brow at bike shops and was saving my forehead from the wrinkles. He called ahead of time, put a little cash down to hold my spot to get the bike tuned and then went in and got fantastic service. He knows waaaay less about bikes so he immediately called me at work when the technician was asking him questions. The person helping him was SO SO NICE! She spoke to me on the phone, she gave me all the options, explained everything and even gave me price points right up front without even me asking. She was saying incredulous things to me like, "it's cheaper to do it this way... but you could do it this way and it would be ten extra dollars..." etc etc. So great!!! They kept my bike for the rest of the day, then the lover of all lovers picked it up for me and I rode it the next day all happy. The base for their tune-up is a freakin' steal and they were really great about being up front with you and they were in no way trying to up-sell me. I can in no way tell you about the ambiance of the store and if the people working there are adorable hipsters because I was never actually present in the store and YET they did a fabuloso job. At the recommendation of a friend, I visited this location yesterday to rent a bike. Apparently, bikes are a great form of cheap transportation in a city, who would figure? The staff here was extremely friendly, and got me in and out with a bike in less than ten minutes. They have an online form you can fill out to sign up for a bike rental, and you have the option to have an electronic copy sent to your email as well, almost like a receipt. They do put a $200 hold on your card, but that hold is released once you return the bike, and you're charged for the time you borrowed the bike. A bike lock, key, and helmet are also included in your rental price; I opted for the lock, but decided to go rogue and not get a helmet. I rented mine for about 24 hours, and it came to $35 and some change. Not too shabby! I believe the hourly rate is $7, and if you borrow it longer than 24hrs, they piggyback $7/hr on top of the $35 flat rate from the day before. If you're on vacation, that's a wicked good deal. Why waste money on cabs when you could be enjoying the fresh air, getting some exercise, and have a way cheaper transportation option? I returned it today, and saw the same young lady from the day before. Both she and the other staff member talked with me as I returned the keys, and we had a nice chat. I always love when staff members do that; it's great customer service, and next time I'm here, they'll definitely be getting my business again! read more

I came here to get my bike tuned up. My 1981 Olive Green ladies Schwinn Varsity named Sally Ride. I love her so. She's like my favorite car, except she's my bike and that makes her better. Plus I don't have a driver's license. She'd been a little difficult recently, clanging and jerking when I changed gears and just generally making my commute more of a workout than it had to be. I brought her to Fairmount Bicycles because it was not too far from my neighborhood. A worker in white glasses checked Sally out, then came over to me, looking like a doctor about to tell me he had to operate on a tumor. "well..." he said, scratching his head, "I checked your bike out...I could just tune her up, but, the problem with these 30 year old bikes is that...you know...they are 30 years old. Sometimes everything just stops working at once." He then told me that for about $100 he could give her new parts, all kinds of parts that I don't even remember what they were called. He was upfront about the cost, and he told me I could get the same bike on Craigslist for about $75. "But I love this bike!" I said, and he nodded, "well, we want you to love your bike, and anyway, if you bought another one like this, it would have the same 30 year old parts." So he went carefully through things he would definitely do, things he might have to do, and things we could leave for next season. When I got my bike back, I just hoped it would be worth the expense, and was it ever! I got on Sally and rode for hours all around the city, I did not want to stop, it was just so much fun to ride again. I had taken her to other places not too long before this to try to get her running half this well, and no one took the time to figure out exactly what needed to be done to her, talk it through with me, and do it. I will definitely go here the next time Sally needs a little perking up, and I highly recommend it to anyone with a bike. read more

Just had a new single-speed built here, a sweet Soma Rush. The shop's owner, Shelly, was extremely attentive to my needs, via email and in person. The bike is beautiful. However, I do have one complaint. About a week after picking up the bike, I took a nasty spill in Center City, flying over my handlebars after riding over a large crater in on 8th Street. ... ... I walked my bike over to be checked out, to make sure nothing was out of place. Two mechanics -- Alex and another dude -- were extremely nice about the situation, asking if I was OK, etc. ... However, after I inquired if I should be riding differently with these particular tires (much thinner than my previous bike's), a third mechanic was very rude and condescending. "You just shouldn't ride in the city if you don't know how to," the guy said, an I'm-cooler-than-you attitude oozing from his hipster pores. I glared in his direction, for a moment forgetting about my scratched-up palms, bloody elbows and strained pectoral muscle. "I've been riding in the city for years," I responded, in my best attempt at not yelling, "DUDE, I'M THE CUSTOMER -- AND YOU'RE A D-BAG!" Alex (I'm pretty sure that's his name) interrupted, thankfully: "Glad you're OK." ... I would really hate for this experience to tarnish my experience with Fairmount Bikes. I love the Soma, even with its fresh dings and scratches from the 8th Street accident.. Just a simple note to employees: Don't judge your customers. Don't make assumptions about someone's riding history. Ask them. Don't belittle customers, or make them feel stupid about what their questions. Again, this experience simply refers to one employee at this shop, not the overall experience. If not for this interaction, I would have no complaints. read more

My opinion of any bike shop is tainted after living in south philly for years and going to Via Bikes for all of my bike needs. But, I live in Fairmount now and Fairmount Bikes is, well, fair. Some of the staff are a bit stand-off-ish, but it's probably a bi-product of the snobs who live in this neighborhood. I can't blame them. I used to work at a bike shop in the suburbs, but Fairmount Bicycles has become my staple supplier for parts, tools, tubes, and advice. Everyone here was extremely nice and friendly. They were also very helpful in suggesting routes that we could take that wouldn't be too difficult since I haven't been on a bike since I was 9! As for the equipment, the bikes were also in pretty good condition and was only $7 an hour to rent. So cheap! This place is the real deal if you want to rent bikes in town. We came from NY for a weekend and decided to rent bikes for 24h (amazing deal for $35). The city is very easy to manage for cycling + it's the best way to move around freely and efficiently while getting a pretty accurate idea of what the city is about. The bikes were super conformable (although not at fast as road bikes), they came with locks which was perfect to explore Philly and park anywhere. Good condition + had a very useful little bag in the back. Staff members were super nice and pleasant. I really recommend this place! read more

I went to Fairmount Bikes yesterday (and also last week) to fix my slowly falling apart bike, and was really happy with the service I got there. Everyone who works at the shop is really knowledgable and helpful, and they were able to fix my bike same day both times. They fixed my sloping handlebars for free; and for a new wheel, a fixed left brake, and all of the work that went into it, I paid only $70.
