El Merkat by Telefèric - Palo Alto - This is the order for Lobster Paella - where is the lobster? Pieces of Galician octopus replaced by belly pork. Very disappointed.

I placed an online order on Teleferic's website to make paella. When I went to pick up my order,…read morethe staff member first told me that there were two orders with the same name. But when she couldn't locate my order, she insisted that the order had been picked up. She then said, "That's okay, I'll give you the order....you'll have two orders, but that's ok" She later asked to see the email confirmation, which I showed her. With a quick glance, she confirmed her belief that the order had been picked up. But when I read it later, it actually said that the order was ready for pick up. I wanted to correct her, but she had already shifted her attention to help other customers and didn't show any interest in wanting to have a further conversation. I didn't want to make a scene, so I left the store. It was Christmas Eve, and I felt that I was being accused of a crime that I didn't commit. It felt pretty awful.

Why fly to Spain during the pandemic when you get paella and your Spanish goods in Palo Alto?…read more Technically, tourists aren't even allowed into Spain right now anyway, so this is one of your better alternatives. This is a tiny market attached to the Telerific restaurant. It doesn't at all rival La Boqueria, the famous market on Barcelona's Las Ramblas which is AMAZING (check out my 5-star Yelp review), but we're talking Palo Alto now, right?! I came for the paella. It's the same paella as you'd get if you from Teleferic, but this is take-out only. The wait time is about 20 minutes. You can get it in a standard plastic-like takeout bowl or in an iron paella pan for a refundable $15.00 deposit. I ended up with both, but if you want something nicely presentable (which Hubs really appreciates), get it in the paella pan. I got the Paella Mixta (meat & seafood, $19.00, serves one). The amount of meat and seafood was very generous. There's a nice prawn atop the paella, but overall pretty salty, meats were dry (great calamari though!) and the rice was missing that great crisp socarrat bottom that I've enjoyed eating all over Spain and Portugal. This was probably more like a 3-star. The Ham Croquettes ($8.00) and Patatas Bravas ($9.00) were ok. The patatas were on the saltier side, but the portion size was good. If you reheat the croquettes, just wait before popping these hot round babies into your mouth or you'll burn your mouth as Hubs did. Inside the market, you can get Spanish wines, freshly jarred sangrias, and many ingredients you'll need to make an authentic paella, like Bomba rice from Spain (a must, in my book for paella) and even paella kits. And if you like black truffles, which I'm crazy about, try the imported Torres potato chips from Spain, which have a super potent black truffle aroma and flavor. The secret sauce is the dehydrated black truffles. These sell out of these fast! An additional Yelp star for the market staples and nice service. It's nice to have a local market like this selling quality culinary items from Spain. And if you want some paella for take-out, they've got you covered here too. TIP: No seating for items purchased from the market. Outdoor seating is reserved for the Telerific restaurant.

We tried brussel sprouts, steak, burger, mussels, and a few other items. I enjoyed everything from start to finish. The standout was not food, but the espresso martini. That is a dang good martini (and most places miss with this!) I'm not much of a "drinker" so that should stand for something! Ambiance It was the right type of moody, and I loved that people dressed their best and some were a bit most casual (in my group), and all felt welcomed. Though the lamps on the large table blocked our view or conversation so we did move it to the side but I liked the vibe of the table. Also, the bathroom is clean and selfie worthy (lol!). Service Incredible! Our server, I forgot his name but tall man if that helps. Incredibly knowledgeable, and this establishment does not write down your order, so it takes good memory skills to take so many orders! But even the greeter was so kind and sweet, a young gentleman with curly hair. They were so accommodating because at the last minute, we had some trouble in paradise and needed to push our reservation to an earlier time. They were able to accommodate us and I am extremely grateful! Now getting there, we had no idea that the roads on Santa Cruz would be so traffic heavy (dead stop and I believe an accident too!), so we were exceptionally late (I am a stickler for being on time so you can only imagine the stress I felt). They called to not only check and we were able to communicate our eta etc. I would have completely understood if they canceled our time slot, but instead, they went above and beyond. I just want to say again to the manager, each staff that assisted us, whether it be checking on our eta, hosting us, making our food, taking our picture, it left such a memorable impression and was the highlight our weekend trip. I have since referred this spot to my colleagues looking to try a superb establishment! Thank you so much once again for exceeding our expectations and working with us. I hope to be back for future dinner dates!

Every table and bar seat taken, a bit loud, but also because of the live music which was a nice touch and enjoyable. The food was quite good. Highlights were the gigante bean soup, which is a nice hearty bean soup with big chunks of ham hock and served with a shatteringly crisp epi which I loved. Great flavor and very artfully arranged. Def would order again. Also tried the mussels which came out with a heaping serving which was great. Only nits were a little more broth would have been nice and seasoning, the mussels were a little bland and slightly too much mustard tones. Also seemed like it could have been hotter. For dinner, I had the fish and chips and the fish was some of the most delicate fried fish I've ever had. Amazing! Mushy peas were ok, needed a little more salt maybe and wasn't overly a fan of the sweet potato chips. My wife had the burger which was top notch, excellent and her fries were the kind I love. Crisp, thin and salty. There was plenty for me to eat her fries with my fish. Dessert was a very nice chocolate mouse with salted marcona almonds on top. The combo of sweet and salty was excellent and a great way to finish the meal. Service was also excellent. Our server was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal and noticed this morning I received a $20 off dessert if we come back in a month. Nice touch to have repeat customers. Lovely dinner and experience!

MADRE MÍA! That is all I can say…read more As someone whose family hails from Southern Spain, I am extremely picky about Spanish and Italian food--150%. Anyone raised in these cultures understands that. MAKE NO MISTAKE: this is not your everyday tapa place or a wannabe Spanish restaurant, nor is it overpriced elevated cuisine; this is the real deal. I have visited numerous times--once with a Spanish friend, then with my cousin, and later with two Greek friends. Each time has been a pleasure. My Greek friends were blown away by Montserrat's lamb recipe, which was impressive to them since, for Greeks, meat is synonymous with lamb. One very important aspect for me when eating lamb is that it should not have a heavy mutton flavor. This lamb was wonderful, to say the least! Here are the dishes I have tried and appreciated, in no particular order: XAI BITES Two ground lamb sliders with caramelized onions, red wine sauce and manchego cheese- THIS IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT! - **AMANIDA CATALANA** - **LES NOSTRES "BRAVAS"**: Really nice potatoes cooked with brava sauce, a little spicy but perfect. - **GAMBAS AL AJILLO** - **OLIVES OR ACEITUNAS**: As we say in Spanish. In Catalan, they say OLIVES. - **PA AMB TOMÀQUET**: The first time I had this was in Catalunya. This region has perfected it--nice, toasted bread infused with garlic and tomato or as they say, TOMÀQUET (instead of TOMATE in Spanish). If you want to experience a rice dish similar to paella, I recommend the: - **FIDEUÀ**: Noodle paella with saffron, shrimp, calamari, and mussels. - **ZARZUELA DE MARISCOS**: A tomato-based Spanish seafood stew with saffron, calamari, shrimp, mussels, and clams. Try not to confuse this with the San Francisco-originated Cioppino; it is not the same. And the desserts--the flans and the rest--are top-notch, as is the sangria. ¡VIVA! My next visit, I will make sure to try the rioja rice and the morcilla based rice dish. ALL I CAN SAY IS BRAVO!

I literally kept debating whether to sit indoors or outdoors and at what table since every seat offered a spectacular view! The cute little motorbike and bicycle, the urns, the lighting, just wow! But how's the food? Absolutely delicious. This is a place you have to come with a group to try more things. We ordered the Kerala Fried Chicken, Grilled Shrimp, Chicken Poee Pocket, Butter Chicken, and Chicken Biryani. The highlights for me were the butter chicken with the sauce that never stops giving for your garlic naan and the chicken Poee pocket. I didn't like the masala chai tea and thought it was a bit bitter. I think everything else was good but not show stopping. It seems like u should come at night instead of during the day for the vibes and an upgraded menu so I will have to come back sometime. Otherwise, definitely come enjoy the friendly service with the lovely food!

We thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes we tried, and it's great to see the restaurant continue experimenting with creative vegetarian options. The Mamu Kabab Saffron Korma, with mushroom as the main ingredient, was rich and flavorful. The Homemade Paneer Kalimirch was incredibly creamy and comforting. "I Dream of Tahini" stood out as a unique non-alcoholic sesame-based drink--very thick, nutty, and definitely tahini-forward. The Methi Matar Shami Kebab is a must-try for vegetarians, and the Tender Jackfruit Slider continues to be one of their best appetizers and a dish that has clearly stood the test of time. The only downside was the service, which felt quite slow even for a Sunday evening, that's the main reason for 4 stars but the food quality and creative menu made the visit worthwhile.

I've been here several times and recommended the spot as a solid option (my views have changed). The first disappointing dish was the app tuna tartare. Completely flavorless with little to no seasoning with run of the mill potato chips for dipping. In fairness, we also got oysters which were a bit small but good flavor. The real disappointment though came with one of the entrees. We ordered the NY strip 8 oz which, first of all, I guess we're the suckers for ordering that cut of meat and size FOR 58 DOLLARS. But hey, steak sounded good. It wasn't. The seasoning was fine but at one point we started laughing because the steak was so chewy we had to break mid convo to get down the bite. Along with a sad mushy mess of Swiss chard to complement, this was a rough dish. The service: strange. Our waiter was generally good, but not 60 seconds after ordering apps and drinks, he came back asking if we were ready to order entrees. Umm no, we've barely just sat down, let's pump the breaks. Later on, he came over and told us that the steak was ready, should he let it sit or bring it out. What? I've never gotten that question before. Yeah dude, bring out the food. Cocktails: the reason I gave this 3 stars and not less. Very solid option along Cal Ave to sit at the bar and have good drinks.
