I've been getting tune-ups and repairs here for a few years and they do a stellar job, and the price is the same or less than larger stores. The one time I needed to bring it back for a further adjustment, they did it cheerfully and at no additional cost. They've talked me out of the expense of needing to replace components that were still in their prime. I've been thinking about switching from a mountain bike to a gravel bike for a while. Last week, I was walking by and popped into the store to see what they had on hand. Ryan hooked me up, and I rode my new baby home that day. So happy! read more

Regarding Bicycle Brustop on Grant in Old Town Novato: I was oversold a crappy device by a pushy salesperson about a month ago. There was no alternative brand or type in the store, which is just weird. I needed one badly, so I took his word for everything. I used it once. I had told the salesperson that I had my eye on a bike there and would likely buy it. He said they can always order me one if that one sells. Showed me the various colors and I was excited about buying it. It was about $3500. A month later, after I used the item I purchased that day (Third time I used it), it failed to work again. I tried to return it, but the fat, skinny, approximately 55 year guy old told me I can't. This was after messing around with it for some time. He said if I brought it back a couple days earlier, it might be different. That made zero sense. I Came home and tried it again and it doesn't work. I'm only out $50, but they're out a $3500 bike sale and at least 5 customers, for life. It doesn't pay to be snobby, rude, and greedy. read more

I bought my youngest daughter her most recent bike here and I had a great time lol. The beer bar makes it easier to throw down the coin that bikes cost these days lol. In all seriousness though, the staff is EXCELLENT and the selection of bikes is pretty nice. Their store is not large but they stock more higher end selections so if you do get something from them, it will be a quality product. One of the other things that I like is that it is a local business and their employees seem genuinely happy to be there. That's a big deal for me. Because of all that I went there again today to look at a new bike for my son. I didn't have a couple beers like last time though. I love their little bar "The Alibi", it's hilarious. They stock some pretty decent local selections as well as things like IZZE fruit soda as well as chocolate milk for the youngest of riders. If you are in the market for a quality bike, I would highly recommend stopping by, having a beer and test riding a bike! read more

The great thing about having a local bike shop is their connection to the community leads to better customer service and BB has that going just right. I was on a ride recently and my shifters were annoyingly a bit off. But my loop took me through downtown Novato so I stopped off at BB. The shop was busy and Devin had several bikes in the repair shop. But he somehow remembered my name and immediately put my bike in a stand and fixed the problem. When I asked how much as I pulled out my CC he said there was no charge and to enjoy my ride. Now that's customer service that draws return loyalty. Note: On top of the customer service, they also have most of my favorite bike brands and to top it off a great selection of beers on tap! What more could you ask for in a bike shop. read more

Ok, we haven't yet used their bike services though we've chatted Aaron and Devyn up enough to know we'd love to in the near future when we're back riding. Mostly I come in, have a 10oz pour of a local brew and my boyfriend can come in and get his bike fix since he doesn't drink. I like it since it's not a big pub scene - just nice and easy with interesting folks riding on through or interested in riding. And a pint is just too much for me. But I thoroughly checked out electric bikes last Sunday while having my Henhouse Illuminati (loved it and the beer). Hmmmm??? read more

Never been to this shop until I bought a bike from them last Friday. I live in the East Bay so I had to drive about an hour and a half to pick-up bike, fortunately, I had an excellent experience and totally made my drive worthwhile. Shop itself is not super big, but they seem to have a decent selection of Giant and Rocky Mountain bikes. There's a bar in the back (hence the name) and a few cyclists who seem to be enjoying their favorite brews. Very chill and cool environment! Staff are super friendly! Bike was all ready to go when I arrived but they still took the time to do some final checks/adjustments to make sure everything was dialed. They even converted my bike tubeless and chopped my bars down to my preferred size. I think Marcus is the name of the guy who helped me and he's a stellar dude, though the other 2 guys with him were also very friendly! Needless to say, I left the shop with a perfectly set up bike, hit the trails the following day and been a super happy camper! read more

Great local Marin County Bike shop. Friendly, fair, knowledgeable, communicative, informative, no pressure, and dog-friendly. They perform quick and accurate diagnostics for needed repairs. They prepare a quote proposal for you to approve before proceeding with repairs and contact you if other issues are found. Repairs are completed promptly. I use them regularly for all four of my road and mountain bikes. They back up their work with integrity if there are any issues. They try to save you money rather than encourage you to purchase repairs and items that aren't needed. read more

Too bad he didn't put the same effort, which he put into his Yelp response, into simply helping me fix/replace the bent rim. All the gymnastics in his response re timelines, etc, doesn't change the simple fact - rim was bent BEFORE I rode it. Point of my review was not to trash Brustop. Instead, it was to inform other potential customers that given my experience, you may be on your own once the bike is "sold." This shop is fantastic. I bought a bike from them while living in Tahoe (there are very few bikes available this year!), and they were VERY helpful during the course of the purchase -- AND after. They were able to text with me about different bike options, including pedals, etc., and were available to talk on the phone as well. I had to arrange for a family member to pick up the bike. They helped load the bike into the car and get them on their way. Very much appreciated! When the bike arrived in Tahoe it was missing a part and had the wrong coil shock for the size -- an issue with the bike manufacturer. The folks at Brustop sent me the missing part the next day, as they had it in stock. They also got in touch with the bike manufacturer in Canada and were able to secure the right-sized coil for my bike. It was sent to me about 10 days after the issue was uncovered. This above and beyond customer service is the reason for my 5-star review. I very much appreciated the assistance with my purchase and love my new bike! Cheers to Bicycle Brustop!! read more

Went to bike up my bike @3:20pm on a Friday, after being told it would be done Friday afternoon or "end of day". Turns out by end of day, they really meant 7pm, on Friday night. They had not sent me a msg it was done, I could have called I guess--so I'm culpable here, I made an assumption it would be ready. So, I owned that, said I misunderstood them, and it's just a run-of-the-mill miscommunication. So, why 2 stars? ... because of their response. They said, "our hours are on our website," "they say 7pm, that's end of day". hmmmm I did not realize store hours were on something called a "website"... anyway that made me laugh. They lead with this defensive posture. Overall, I got a general vibe that I'm an idiot, i.e. their website was clear. After sensing my amusement with how they were reacting, they offered an half-hearted apology. I ran a small business for 10 years--this is not how I dealt with situations like this. read more

I was desperately trying to find a particular Giant hybrid bike but (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) none of the Bay Area Giant dealers could obtain one nor tell me when one would be available. I contacted Bicycle Brüstop and they couldn't have been nicer about checking their orders for me, and (in a minor miracle) happened to have two of the exact Giant model I wanted, arriving the following week! I put a deposit down and told them the accessories I knew that I wanted. The following weekend, my wife and I drove the 70+ miles from San Jose to Novato and we spent a couple hours there talking to Aaron and Carolyn and their staff, picked out a few more items, and had lunch across the street. They were great to deal with, and clearly know their subject matter! My wife ended up purchasing her own new Giant hybrid as well, so we returned the following weekend to pick it up from them! Im an extremely disappointed customer. A couple of weeks ago, I came in to get my tires fixed for my bob stroller. Ive only used the stroller once since then, and the tires are already flat! They charged me over $50 to fix two tires, and they obviously didnt do the job right. My assumption is they just pumped it with air and then charged me for new tubbing. I had this cruising bike in my garage collecting dust for awhile, so I thought I should bring it to a bike shop and get a tune up before riding it again. I looked at the Yelp reviews and decided to bring it here. The bike would not fit in my Forester unless I removed the front wheel, but I was unsure how to do this. I drove to the shop and one of the guys explained the process to me. I went home, removed the front tire, and brought the bike to the shop. I noticed that there was an inviting place to have refreshments in the back of the store and an outside seating area. They specialize in beer and other drinks, but do not serve warm food except when they have special events. The entire process was quite interesting; they seem to focus on community in Novato, which is great. They took my bike on this Sunday and told me my bike would be ready on Wednesday. This first impression of Bicycle Brustop was absolute perfect. Wednesday comes along and I don't hear anything. I call the shop at 6:30 pm and asked if my bike was ready. I was told that there was some miscommunication in the shop and they didn't get to it today and could have it ready on Friday, but if I needed it sooner, they could have it ready on Thursday. I said Friday was ok. Friday comes along and I give them a call at 10 am to check on things and I was told that my bike was the first one in the cue and should be done by 3 or 4. I call back at 4:30 and was told the bike was on the rack. The final call from them was at 5:30 when the bike was done. So I wondered - was the job so complicated? This is what was done (tune up) - tune the front and rear shifting, true the rear wheel, adjust the pad location for the front and rear brakes, air up tires, and bolt check. I'm not sure when the communication breakdown occurred after I brought the bike in, but I am a little disappointed after that first great impression. (1) wanted to get a new saddle, but they wouldn't let me see how it fit on the bike, worried i was just looking to buy it online. the whole point of getting it in person was to try it out and support a local business. instead willing to rent me one for like $20! no thanks. i ended up finding one online at rei that was 1/2 the price (2) took the bike in for fork service. they told me i needed a new fork, but only offered me 1 option for a standard, not-no-nice fork. getting a new fork is a pretty big deal. i asked if they'd be willing to install a different fork that i purchased myself so i could pick the one i wanted. they said no because they would make less $$ that way! what???? i ended up getting the fork they recommended, but wish I hadn't read more

I don't have a bicycle, but I do like beer. Did you know that Brustop has a small bar in the back of their shop where you can grab a pint of any of the 4 local beers on tap? What a great idea! After a happy hour at Finnegan's and dinner at Mi Pueblo, a friend and I came across Bicycle Brustop well after their closing hours (9pm). Some of the employees were still in the shop hanging out after work, and they opened their doors to us to show us around. Very cool! Bicycle Brustop has not only become a wonderful fixture in Novato and the local cycling scene, they have set the standard for what being a small business owner should be in this town. The owners are local and are incredible people, kind and really fun. The staff is top notch, extremely knowledgeable about all things bike and totally unpretentious. The shop always has a great range of bikes, including an electric bike that looks way fun. They carry kids bikes and cruisers and all the gear you need to perform and look good and maintain your bike and self. I think they just got new shirts in that say support your local bike shop, which is totally important. Oh and they also serve beer and snacks in the back, that is a super cool touch. They offer group rides both road and mountain and have specific rides geared to female riders. They offer classes about bicycle maintenance and exercises you can do to prevent and alleviate cycling injuries. They sponsor local riders and donate to the schools and were also very instrumental in the Stafford Lake Bike Park project (holla)! I am the first to admit I do not know a ton about bicycling, but I enjoy it and want to foster a love of cycling in my kids. We got new bikes for our kids here as a surprise and they very kindly held them for us so we were able to reveal the bikes to the kids in the shop. I really feel like they are an extension of our family community. When we are downtown we always stop in because they always have something new to see and something going on, you should too. read more

Ok so Aaron and his team deserve some kudos. These are some very tough times for all bike shops to keep up with the demand of customers for repairs and service and sales etc. I have had several experiences with Bicycle Brustop (not the have a beer one as I don't drink..lol) and they are nice and positive. I have had several conversations with Aaron the owner and he is nice and cares about bikes and his customers. It's also not easy for any small business that goes through employee transitions. It's the nature of any business and of life itself. I haven't any service experiences but have bought several bikes, recently my son and I got help from the employee who is a teacher and works their P/T..super nice, talked with my son and I building rapport, bet he's a great teacher to have as a student. Anyways, went in recently after previous visit and he helped me and was really nice, takes his time with you and this is important as these are big purchases..investments. Hey, I'd love to get these bikes presto immediately but we have to be patient and supportive of others sometimes and this is one of those times, the guys are working diligently and hard to do the workload. Everyone has become a bike enthusiast in last several months and it just isn't easy for any bike shop, I have friends that go to other shops in their neighborhood and it's the same everywhere. We are fortunate to have two great bike shops Bicycle Brustop and Old Town Sports. Put yourself in their shoes and ask how would you want people to treat you if in their shoes. What can I say!! The service is superior at Brustop. If I could give a higher rating I would. We are currently in a shelter in place and getting a bike is not an easy thing. This business will do their best to get you what you need and in a timely manner. The Owner - Aaron helped size me and found a bike that I love. I am riding every day now. We have also purchased a bike for our son and helmets for my husband and. You can also order beer for pickup. Shopping locally is very important to me. I suggest stopping here if you are in Novato. Do your research before dropping your bike for service. I had the classic sticky Sram mountain bike brake issue, which is fixed with a $27 rebuild kit. instead they charged me $100 for a whole new lever and assembly that I didn't need. the bike rides great, but I feel a bit taken advantage of. will likely take my bikes to one of the Fairfax dealers going forward. read more

All of the expertise and none of the elitism. Great team, great service. I brought in a tire than needed a new tube. The tube was on back order, but the service team was able to find a solution that lets me get back on my bike until the correct tube comes in. They could have just sent me on my way empty handed with a non-functioning bike easily, but even when service desk had a line the employee working with me went out of his way to get me set up and I really appreciate that. read more

I came in twice last weekend looking at a specific Giant bicycle (Trance 3 - amazing bike!) and the help and customer I received was above and beyond, words don't do them justice. I was still unsure on what bike to get over the handful I took into consideration, but knowing this the owner stayed past shops close to sit and chat with my boyfriend and I about bikes and fit. I ended up going with a Stumperjumper but yet here I am reviewing this shop wishing they had sold Specialized because I would have rather given them the sale. Giant is great! I just have a very awkward size and found the large Stumpy had better stand over height for me. read more

To begin with, I've always admired this company and how they approach starting a business in Novato i.e. they got involved in the community and made an effort to create a gathering place which was great. Time passes and I didn't have a lot of interaction with the store, until my son joined his HS mountain bike team and I saw that BB was a sponsor - yea! Then my husband (a Triathlete) started going to BB for his bike repairs. The did a great job, but he had a couple of things that he wasn't thrilled about. I took his bike back to the store and explained (to the best of MY knowledge), what went wrong. Well, to say that BB went above and beyond to correct the problem is an understatement! They kept working with my husband to fix the problem until it was solved and the more than made amends for any prior frustrations. This company is the real deal and is owned and operated by people who really care about their reputation - I can't recommended them highly enough! read more

Everyone here is amazing! Special shout out to Devyn for taking the time to not only fit my 6yr old son for a bike, but for taking him out back and giving him some pointers on how to ride. Devyn recommended we remove the pedals so he can work on his balance, so we did. Brought the bike back a few weeks later, they put the pedals on, and he was riding behind the shop within 5 minutes. My bike makes a ticking noise riding on level ground, disappears when going uphill. I decided to take my Marin Larkspur CS3 into Brustop and explain the problem. The mechanic stated that the chain was worn and if I replaced the chain with a full tune-up everything would work fine. So I left the bike and was told it would take a week to repair which I thought was very unusual. I've never had any bike, over many decades of ownership, in a shop for a tune-up for a whole week. I left the bike, wasn't offered a receipt and called 6 days later to be told the bike still wasn't ready. They called me 2 days later to say I needed brakes on the rear, which I didn't but agreed to let them change it anyway. When I went to pick up the bike I took it out for a test run and ended up walking the bike back to the store because the chain got stuck in the 3-1 position. The mechanic went on a rant about I should never use the 3-1 position as it was redundant. (Like now I have these boys telling me how to shift the gears on my bikes which I've own for years. So he forced the chain to disengage. I told him I have never heard anyone telling me to never use the low gear while in the big sprocket in the front gear. It was bullshit. I paid him because I didn't feel this ranting idiot would ever give up his continuous rant over how to shift the bike. So I asked for a receipt. He said he would email the receipt. Next day no receipt, so I called and asked again, still no receipt. Usually when I've experienced this "No receipt" thing its because someone is either stealing from the till, cheating on their taxes or maybe they received a PPP loan and are trying to scam a way into complete forgiveness. The deal with the chain is quite clear, he cut it too short, and now it is unable to make the jump to the large front sprocket. Also the ticking noise that I was told would disappear is still there. So basically they ripped me for $187.00. Avoid this place, unless you are okay with being scammed!! read more
