Deep Vellum Books is a gem. Let me tell you why…read more Deep Vellum Books is the storefront and headquarters of Deep Vellum Books & Publishing, a nonprofit literary arts organization and the largest publisher of literature in translation in the US (I did not know that!!!!). They stock their own titles as well as a curated selection of literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. I visited with my family (dad, stepmom, adult siblings, husband) last weekend, and we spent way more time in the store than we expected to given the store's size. It's not large, but the store is packed with interesting and unusual and harder to find titles. I started to read a book's dusk jacket flap blurb, which led to a conversation about the book with the staff in the shop. (I bought it, I already read it, I loved it.) It's that kind of store - I was walking around, reading blurbs out loud to my family - finding book after book that piqued my interest. I left with a book, my siblings with two or three each, and my dad with at least one. There were six of us, and we bought maybe 8 books. The staff working the day we were visited were incredible, chatting with us about books, telling us about Deep Vellum, and answering our questions about their events. It's clear that people who work at Deep Vellum love books and that always makes shopping at a bookstore more wonderful. (I'm not sure I would have taken home the book I did if I hadn't chatted with a store employee for a few minutes about it - it's a little out of my wheelhouse - but I loved and I'm so glad I picked it up). The store hosts book clubs which sound amazing. I mean how many bookstores offer a "Homer Out Loud" book club that meets to read Homer's epics out loud once a week!? Or has a book club called "Underdogs in Space" that meets once a month to talk about underread sci-fi books?! If you're in Deep Ellum and you love to read anything at all - make your way over to Deep Vellum. It's a great organization and a great bookstore. I couldn't love it more.

Actually from the magazine description it was a low priority in my mind but,I ended up here anyway. I'm glad I did because it's a fantastic place. Exquisitely currated small inventory however,it covers a lot of ground. Places like this inspire me and remind me mainstream is not the only stream. The irony of seeing a pamphlet on avoiding Amazon was not lost on me standing in a small bookstore like thousands Jeff Bezos put out of business starting that company. I always like to support small independent businesses but,not artificially. They have to add value to my life in some way and Poets Bookstop did I walked away with several purchases as did a friend along with me . While I did not buy anything, I felt very welcomed by the staff and they let me browse at my leisure. My first thought as I scanned their collection was "this is a thinking person's bookshop". It was refreshing to see everything from contemporary literature to biography along with everything in between. Add to that, they carry an array of journals, bookmakers, posits, etc. to help enhance the reading experience. If you are into reading and learning, I highly recommend checking out this shop. I read horror/splatterpunk and was visiting Dallas from Memphis and decided to pop by to support local. I did not see any titles or authors I recognized (except for 1-2 Stephen King books), and the only gifty items they had were 2 candles, a few wax melts, and a few tote bags. The location of the booth was also not what was listed on the website-- we luckily passed it on our way to the location indicated on the website. I would not return next time I am in town, but that doesn't mean someone else won't find what they're looking for here, hence the 3 stars!

There are beautiful classic stories, like Little Women, and Pride and Prejudice, bound in gorgeous colors for reading and collecting. And she has fun additions like the cutest recipe book I have seen ever. When coming to Farmers Market, this is a must visit space. You will not be disappointed.

The bookstore is as adorable as she is, and the store is her dream come true to share her books with the world. Stepping into Storytellers is like taking a step inside another time and place, away from the Dallas' hustle and bustle and into a tranquility of yesteryear. Imagine an era when corporations did not own stores, but when stores were the passion of their owners. That is what you get with Storytellers. Storytellers carries a collection of classic stories, bound in leather as well as unique products from local artisans. Abbey is supportive of the local community and supports local authors and artists, and even sponsors book signings for the community. Storytellers is a must-visit when you are at Dallas Farmer's Market, or even a reason of its own to come here and visit!

Although it does not carry what I'm specifically interested in, if you like to play board games in a relaxed social atmosphere and pick up more modern-day collectibles, this might be the place for you. Madness has a wide variety of collector card sets, board games, and also modern action figure lines, with Star Wars and G.I. Joe as large focal points. Madness does carry some vintage Star Wars figures from the '70s/'80s but it really shines with the franchise toy lines that have come after that heyday, with deep inventory in the sequel trilogy figures, Power of the Force, post-prequel movie and streaming show figures, and the Retro Collection. This is also the place if you love the Pop! Funko figures (which I do not in the least) as Madness has definitely gone all in on the craze. I found the staff to be helpful with my questions during my visit and they gave me space to think about some items I was mulling over. Although I probably won't be a frequent visitor, I appreciate the unique offerings Madness brings, especially in creating community.

The books are all available to purchase and I settled on Gustav Schwab's Greek Myths. Surprisingly, the book prices were not horrible. I spent only like $30.00 on a beautifully bound and illustrated addition to my personal home library. The service in the book store was excellent. They were friendly, engaging, and made effort to connect with each of us inside the store. The staff's engagement facilitated all of us book lovers visiting and having a wonderful time together inside of the store. Pro Tip: On Sundays at 2:30, they have an afternoon tea/champagne service in the library. But, if you plan on coming to it, advance reservations are required.
