Well what can I say..? I was extremely underwhelmed by this place all around. The food was all just so so - just tasted like any other American/Mexican food in the Midwest. My expectations may have been too high but since "Latin street food" is in the name of their business I was expecting a much more authentic & unique experience. The portions were also very average & not uniquely large like another reviewer mentioned (maybe they've downsized over the months?) It's a tiny little takeout only/mostly place. The staff was fine, not rude or off putting at all but not particularly friendly either. We weren't allowed to split our order and use 2 "Local Flavors" coupons which would have been nice since we bought 2 families worth of food for our two families. Also, we weren't allowed to sign up for/use the punch card along with the Local Flavors coupons... On to the food... the only thing I enjoyed (& only somewhat) were the Enchiladas. The tacos were okay but a little bland & very messy. I did not enjoy the raw cabbage that was in them but the pickled red onions were a nice/unique addition. We tried all 4 meats & they were all fine except the Brisket, which tasted like chemicals to me but in all fairness the other 2 people who tried it liked it. The ground beef tasted kind of okay but the stuff I make home is more flavorful with a better texture (maybe they use a bit of filler here?) The only type of rice offered is brown (what?) and the only type of beans offered are black (I prefer refried). I didn't try the Cuban sandwich but my dad hated it & my mom also didn't enjoy it. The nachos were pretty bland & sad, barely any cheese. We ordered a side of chips & salsa and a side of chips & guacamole. TINY portions for the price and the chips were stale & seemed store bought. The guacamole tasted kind of good but the salsa tasted weird. If this place ever expands their menu to include some actual authentic Latin street food dishes I'd be willing to try it again but otherwise it's a hard pass for me. This might be too harsh but honestly I think Taco Bell has better food... Perhaps the proprietors should visit a few nearby establishments that are doing it right for inspiration... such as Imperial (Ferndale), Las Tortugas (Shelby Twp), or Frita Batidos (Ann Arbor). The attention to flavor and freshness are second to none. I have used this business for my catering needs and they were Awesome!! Don't let the location fool you. This place has some serious good food. The ingredients are fresh and the seasonings are spot on. The best part of this restaurant, besides the delish food, is the owner. He clearly lo as what he does and is super personable while he's fixing your order. The tacos, burritos, guacamole all yum. After reading great reviews I had to give it a try. Mexican food is my favorite and I have been to Mexico many times and compare everything to Mexican town (xochis). I also don't like the other Mexican restaurant in plymouth so tried plan b. I have only been here once but I won't be back. I tried 4 different tacos and meats which were just ok, bland, dry. It's a old pizza place also. They were also out of a lot of things avocados seriously??. I mentioned it was my birthday and he said he was going to give me strawberry quesadilla dessert however he never did which I don't really care but was confused. I'm not sure why this place got so many great reviews. I will look elsewhere as I have had better street tacos somewhere else. Will I be back? No. While the owner was nice the food was not. This is a great spot to go and pick up a healthy Mexican dinner in Plymouth! I usually get the burrito bowl and ask for extra pickled onions. That with lettuce, tomato, and slaw makes my bowl into a work of art when the owner is finished! On top of that, I always receive friendly and positive service. Had a serious craving for a cuban sandwich today, and remembered that this place had been recommended to me by a few people. So, I looked up the menu online, and decided I would get a few things in addition to the cuban I was craving so bad. I got both types of tacos with chicken, and pork. Let me tell you, this was some of the best food I have had in a long time. The owner was super nice (I was honestly not in the best mood, and definitely left feeling a lot better), and threw in an extra salsa for me to try. Man was I disappointed with this place! I was looking forward to trying Beyond Borders because most of the reviews said the food was good and Mexican food is my favorite. I ordered the ground beef chimichanga meal, and it came with rice and black beans. The chimichanga was bland and it had more black beans in it than ground beef. It's supposed to be covered in a chipotle crema sauce; however, there was barely any on it ... maybe that would have added the flavor I was craving. I was hoping this would be my new favorite Mexican place but sadly it is not even close. Just tried this for lunch, and we discovered a new place to frequent. I ordered the El Torro sandwich, and it was flavorful, herby, and spicy with the brisket, jalapeños, pickled onions, and chimichurri. My wife ordered the Cuban sandwich, and the pulled pork on it was similarly flavorful with the ham, cheese, pickles, and mustard. Bob was welcoming and even gave me a taste of chili, and was quite proud of his establishment. We will definitely be going back to try some of the other offerings on the menu. read more

Cindy was very rude when I tried calling and placing a carry out order. I have never heard of a place stopping ordered 30 minutes before they officially close. If they are going to stop taking orders with so much time before they close they should put that on their website or put that they close at 7:30. I have gotten food in the past from them and I know that my order takes less then 10 minutes for them to make. customer service is really important to me and they have lost a customer who was starting to become a regular. I am very disappointed in this place. I refuse to spend money at this place again, there are a lot of other places that will treat you better. read more

One of the best things about moving to a new area is that it gives us a chance to check out all the food around town to discover what we should and shouldn't put on the rotation. First thing to mention, it's pretty much strictly a takeout place with 5 window counter spots to sit at, basically to wait for your order to be made. My husband had their tacos (chicken, beef brisket, and pork), and I had the brisket burrito. Everything was delicious. Everyone who worked there were very friendly and were very welcoming. I told them I just moved to the area and they were giving me tips on other places to go. Apparently this place was supposed to be a food truck but it hasn't materialized. I couldn't bring myself to giving them 5 stars because the only beans they have are black beans (no refried). I have no qualms ordering a side of good refried beans, but when that's not even an option, it's hard for me to justify making any part of my order into a combo for an up charge to add rice and black beans. This seems like an item that would yield a pretty good profit margin, maybe worth investigating? Another item I would love to be able to get from any Mexican restaurant is horchata. A good horchata is worth its weight in gold. The profit margin on that may not be as large because of the labor required to make it, but I would noms the heck out of a cup of refried beans and a large horchata, and often. So, while Beyond Borders certainly passes our taste test and we'll be back, we'd be back even more often if those 2 things exist. read more

My family discovered this little gem this past summer. If you want fresh, healthy, Latin inspired food then this is your place. Carryout is Beyond Borders niche. There are only two small tables in the small restaurant if you can't wait to eat your delicious food until you get home. We typically pick up carryout and take it to the park in DTP or we bring it to the local brewery. It's delicious wherever you eat it! The owner, Bob, is extremely friendly and loves to talk about his food. Ask him for a sample of any of his freshly roasted meats and he will happily oblige. My favorite is the shredded beef. I love it in their wet burrito. My kids love their smoked chicken tacos. They also offer a Cuban sandwich and homemade soup. I haven't tried either yet but I will this winter. They don't serve alcohol but they do have a nice selection of Mexican beverages including my favorite, bottled Mexican Coke. Next time you don't feel like cooking, make a run up to Beyond Borders. This place is one of its kind near the Detroit Area, I only had food like this down in Miami. Had a wet burrito and the 3 tacos. The best way to describe the experience was they had a ton of toppings that blended well which created an explosion of taste in every bite. read more

First off, the food was great. I got the tacos with beef and it was very tasty. Additionally, service was fast and I was able to get in and out very quickly. Now the reason for the docking of stars was the hygiene issues. 2 of the 3 gentlemen behind the counter had their masks below their noses and in the cramped, unseparated area that was the register, that is not very agreeable. To make matters worse, the gentleman preparing the food was not wearing a glove, and was also trying the food by picking it up with his bare fingers and putting it into his mouth. After trying the food, he proceeded to get handsy with it when placing it into a box. Even if there was not an ongoing pandemic, if I saw that, I would not come back again. I ended up recooking everything when I went home. All that being said, the fact that the twice cooked tacos were still enjoyable encouraged me to write this comment in the hopes the manager will do something about cleanliness issue. Delicious little spot in a very unassuming location. Upon entering the owner was very welcoming. I challenged him as to just how good his Cuban sandwich was. He made some claims so I ordered one! When the food arrived, it definitely lived up to the talk and I very much enjoyed the sandwich. A friend of mine got the nachos and they were HUGE. Cool little place I had driven by and smelled as I stopped at the convenience store next door. All the food was excellent and the Cubano did not disappoint--on top of that the presentation of each meal had the little special touches that made you know they really care about their product and customers. Let me start by saying I hate yelp. Most reviewers on here are just mean and attention seeking - I think google reviews give you a better idea of most places I've visited. (Go read the reviews of this place there!) I had take the time to post my review here after reading these out-of-town, only-been-here-one-time, recent poor reviews. I have eaten here MANY times. This is NOT Tex Mex. This is NOT Mexican. This is a a unique little, mainly to-go counter, with food that is made with love and Latin inspiration. Bob is so passionate about his cooking and it totally shows. I love that I can walk in here now and just say "make me something, you know what I like" and I'm always satisfied. Every friend and coworker that has come here has been entertained by Bob and enjoyed everything they tried. I just had the Mexican Pizza for lunch ($5 on Monday! so good!), Taco Tuesday - get the brisket and the chicken tacos. Bob even gets creative with vegan options. Try this place! Driving to our favorite watering hole, we decided to pop in and see how fast we could get some food to go on the spot to take with us to the brewery or if we should order and pick it up on the way home. Bob, the owner, said he could have it ready in three minutes. OK, so it took nine minutes because we kept him talking and kept ordering food. LOL Nachos were pretty good.. fair enough because it's hard to blow nachos (fresh nacho chips, BTW). But the chicken street taco and the brisket wet burrito where OUTSTANDING! Normally, I find myself globing on the salsa. Not here; nothing else is needed. I typically like my Mexican style foods nice and spicy hot, but I decided to go with the Bob's version unadulterated. It wasn't spicy hot at all, not in the least, but it was an amazing flavor (lots of spices) and ridiculously fresh. In fact, I'll order them again the same way. Bob's a charismatic guy and quick to treat the kids extra special. HI won't say what he allowed him do, but it was cool, especially since e likes to cook. Said my eight year old with his mouth full " This is the best taco he's ever had." And he's eaten in Mexico a few times, so his opinion counts for something! Normally, he doesn't like sliced onions, but these were something else (sweet-pickled onions perhaps). Bob had him try a piece on its own and he gave a thumbs up with a smile :-) On the chicken taco, they brought the whole flavor profile together. In the end, I've found my new Mexican food stop. I've been here about five times now and each experience hasn't disappointed me. The food is fresh and you can get a good meal w/ a drink for around $11. The owner is very kind and makes great conversation when things aren't hectic in the store. I've had my fair share of 'sideline' bosses, but this guy is always behind the grill and working his butt off with his employees. I've tried the Cuban sandwich, the tacos, and the quesadilla. Each came with very generous portions, especially the chicken/brisket tacos. Ordered one up, quite excited, having spent some years in Tampa, I was ready for at least a "good" sandwich. Most Cuban sandwiches up north lack authentic Cuban bread, so was prepared for a panini style sandwich at the most. Unfortunately when I unwrapped the sandwich at home, it seemed someone left the iron down. A. Long. Time. Burnt burnt burnt. Inedible. Too bad. Was excited. Saw the sign after grabbing beers next door. We walked in and were met by the kindest gent this side of the Mississippi. He slings a menu of Mexican and Latin favorites: tacos, burritos, pressed sandwiches, etc. This one man operation might be slow out of the gate but the chatter and instant camaraderie helps the time go by quickly. Take a Pass on the mammoth quesadillas selection with yellow cheese and focus your ordering on the taco trio and Cuban sandwich instead. All three meat options are solid with the pork being the best! The guac has a lime tinge that makes your mouth water in a good way. (Also the soup is rad if it's that time of the year) Overall, solid food from a great guy trying to live a dream. My teenager wanted Mexican and our regular spot in Canton was temporarily closed. So we googled and found Beyond Borders. After reading the reviews we decided to try it. Was hesitant when we pulled up because it is very small. When we walked in, the owner was extremely nice! He asked if we had been there before & welcomed us like an old family member. The girls ordered chicken tacos and the brisket taco. My teenagers LOVED their chicken tacos. I loved the brisket taco & my chicken bowl!! At first we were disappointed that they didn't have hard tacos, but that disappeared after tasting our soft tacos! We will definitely return!! read more

My wife and I just finished eating at Beyond Borders for the first time and I have to say that the food here is excellent! I would rate their Cuban sandwich, with Bob's homemade pickles, higher than any Cuban sandwich I've had - including those I've had in Miami, Homestead and Key West. Truly a step above the rest! The meats used on the sandwich were top-notch and the balance of all the ingredients was perfect. Truly a step above the rest! My wife's wet burrito was also better than anything she's ordered from the local Mexican restaurants in a long time. Speaking of meat, I got to sample a piece of Bob's homemade smoked brisket.
