It had cannons to protect Beverly Harbor. During the 19th Century wealthy elites built summer retreats here along the coastline. Even President Taft used one of these estates for his summer trips. When David Lynch died he left his 400,000 as bequest to the city of Salem. They transformed it into a park in the 1940s. In 1966 vandals destroyed the rose garden and burned down the monastery. This made the city restore the original grounds to its original glory. Today the city has restored the rose garden and made the park with two beaches even more impressive for visitors to enjoy the views of the Atlantic Coast line .
