Two of my personal standouts are the Beetle Juice, which incorporates fresh beet juice, and The Fishbone, which brilliantly highlights their house-made aquavit. One of the employees informed her that The Hop Shop is owned by the same owner, and has it on tap! So we decided to take a walk over and visit. I had heard of this place tucked away behind Moo & Brew but had never visited which I now realize is a mistake, and I have been missing out. They are part bottle shop and part tap room, but more than that this place feels like a welcoming and chill neighborhood hang out. There was a live musician singing and playing guitar of both covers and some of his original tracks. There was a fluffy dog hanging out in one the chairs like he owned the place. They have several seating options from large wooden tables to soft plush sofas, even some swinging couches hanging from the ceiling. The walls are vibrant and full of murals, and the whole space just feels alternative but still approachable and not pretentious. In other words this place seemed very much at home in Plaza Midwood one of the coolest neighborhoods in Charlotte. We ended up staying far longer than originally planned just because we were loving the vibes. I can't wait to visit again.

That being said for me the origins location in Plaza will always be the greatest. Compared to the others this has a much smaller neighborhood feel bad and if memory serves it was the first brewery to call Plaza Midwood home. They have become well known for their Juicy Jay IPA and their Penguin Pilsner, but they always have lesser known small batches that are worth trying as well. This is one of my favorite breweries in Charlotte.

Luckily for them there are plenty of good options, one of which is The Free Range Bar! Free Range Brewing is one of the older Charlotte breweries that has been around since 2015 during the height of the craft beer craze. Due to their years of fostering a community, it is no surprise to me that they were able to open up a satellite tap room years later. This second location is smack dab in Camp Northend surrounded by plenty of patio seats outside, and featuring a quaint little barroom inside. This smaller tap room has a more intimate setting. The people working there are friendly and they have a variety of beers to try along with other beverages if beer isn't your thing. While I don't think this is a replacement for the original, it does a good job paying homage, and provides great beer options for Camp Northend. If you enjoy it here and haven't visited their OG brewery then consider this your intro and go check it out!

I got a single sauv blanc can and a bottle of pet nat rose to go to bring to a gathering later, and the bartender (I wish I had caught her name) said the bottle used to be available by the glass and was really good! I asked for a small bag to help me carry everything and again they didn't have anything. Definitely smaller, maybe nitpicky things on my end, but I do want to highlight that the service/hospitality here is top notch.

I did end up getting one (1) of their sours, and it was alright, but nothing special. In addition, I went on a weekday night, so it's not really fair to compare it to a weekend night type of vibe, but nevertheless, the vibe was kind of lame, and I didn't love the ambiance. I will say that the bartender was very nice, and I could see how HopFly might be a fun place to go on the weekends. Overall, HopFly wasn't terrible, but considering all the other bars and breweries in the area, it might be a while before I come back.
