After years of not having a hair salon/barber I really cared for, Better Cuts became my go-to place, I've been there about 6 times. $17 haircuts and they always do a great job. I have fairly short brown straight hair and get a range of hair styles (as much as a short haired guy can), and they always are attentive to ask what I want and follow directions well, scissoring vs clippers, tapered side length to top length, angular vs blended neckline, etc. They tend to be a young and hip group and very friendly. The space is bright with modern design and well kept. For a $17 haircut you can't beat it, I've stupidly paid $45 for the same haircut at other "high end" salons. Give 'em extra tip since they're cheap :) read more

I must agree with Britta- it's impossible to find a place that gives a decent cut that won't break the bank! After some horrifying cuts in my youth, I try to avoid going to a hairdresser as much as possible. The last time I got my hair cut was over a year ago...I had gotten about 12 inches off to donate to charity. That was the only way I could justify a cut. My thick, curly/wavy hair is precious to me, but it was getting so long that the curls went limp and I could barely fit an elastic band around it. so... After detailed yelp searching I finally decided on Bettercuts. I was terrified. I showed Trinh(?) a picture of my hair from like 6 years ago. It's been THAT long before someone could actually achieve that same style. Also, my hair had been considerably shorter back then, but I really wanted to keep my length. She listened to me and explained what she was doing the whole way so that I would stay calm. All in all GREAT choice. I left not only relieved but PROUD of my new do! read more

Michelle has no idea how to deal with curly hair. terrible experience, has to leave with a hat on! read more

They are good at haircuts but English was their second language. Make sure you speak slow and straightforward. If they understand what are you saying they will do the best for you. I can speak Vietnamese and it probably makes them get me the right fit that i need. read more

Love this place--so convenient, pleasant, great value, can walk in. I never leave reviews but in this case i am

They cut my girlfriend's hair too short and she came home crying. I've never seen her so upset about her hair. I don't know why they thought a "trim" meant to cut over two years of growth off her beautiful long hair, but if you just need routine maintenance do NOT go to this butcher shop. read more

My husband was getting haircuts here before, so I desided to give a try to this place. It was the worst day in my life! I have gorgeous long virgin blond hair until my waist.. Well, I had... Not anymore( Hanh cutted 6 inches of my hair instead of 2! He was on drugs or some pills, "haircut" is very sluppy, all hair are different length! He ruined my life and my carrier! I think he will use my hair for extensions! Please, don't go to this please! I m thinking to attend lawsuit against Hanh, so his nasty "Buisness" will be closed! People, pls, avoid this place. read more

They did an okay, but not great job on my kids' hair. However, they do not take credit cards or ATM cards, so I had to hike around Piedmont trying to find an ATM. What kind of real business doesn't take cards these days? The only ATM machine I found nearby was Wells Fargo, who popped me $3 to draw money out. So, an extra 15 minutes of towing my cranky kids around, and $3 to get my kid's hair cut. read more

I went into this place for the first time today, I asked for a simple low fade with a 1 on bottom and 5 on top.. The lady cutting my hair did such a horrible job! The fade was more like a line across my head it was patchy in some areas to, I quietly paid the fee and came home to just buzz my head. NEVER going here again. read more

Han is the best!!! The ladies are good, too, but Han's my man. The place is clean and friendly, and the prices are reasonable.

I had my hair cut this morning by Hanh at BetterCuts. I couldn't be more happy. I brought in a picture of how I wanted my hair cut and it was spot on. The Salon itself is very clean and they work at making you comfortable. I highly recommend BetterCuts. read more

I dropped in on Saturday without an appointment and they fit me in very quickly. I didn't do a great job of explaining what I wanted, so I got a good haircut, but it wasn't exactly what I had in mind...it wasn't that expensive, so I was going to just let it go...but I was feeling down about it, and my husband encouraged me to go back. I returned after about 40 minutes and explained that I had something different in mind. They were so gracious! The same stylist listened carefully and within ten minutes, I had EXACTLY the cut I wanted and it looks so great! She wouldn't even accept another tip for the extra work, which made me feel so guilty...the whole staff is just lovely and obviously very talented. I will definitely be coming back here for my next haircut!! read more

I whent in yesterday and was happy as a clam comming out. My hair is very fine (simmilur to babys hair) and grows supper slow about and inch every 4 months, so keeping as much length as possable was my major concern. I brought in a few pictures of styles I like and Hahn was great, He helped me pick the style best suited for my face structure and only took a 1/4 inch off my hairs length! I now have great layers all over and he was very nice and showed me how to style my hair so that I can maxamize the little volume I have in my hair. I may not need a hair cut offten (mabie 2 or 3 times a year) but my next hair appointment will deffanatly be with Hahn! The other great thing was my cut didnt take that long to do (on account of my thin medium short length hair) and I feel the skill Hahn has, He is confadent in his work and knows what he is doing. He even gave me a slight head massage wale washing my hair and that was great. Even the price is right here, I payed 44$ after his tip, and that was great on my bank account! read more

I walked in with out an appointment on a weekday afternoon. I was in Hahn's chair within 10 minutes. I told him what I wanted, he did it. I am no longer afraid to get my hair cut. I will go back. Also, it was less than $45 even with the Paul Mitchell hair product I purchased. Such a deal. read more

Strange coincidence that I am the second Britta in a row to write a review! Just moved to the area and thought I would try it. Trinh was my stylist and I must say I was very pleased with both the color and haircut. One of the best haircuts I have had in a long time! read more

I've been getting my hair cut here for a few years now. Due to my erratic schedule I usually just drop in and get my hair taken care of by whomever is available. As such I've probably had just about every stylist cut my hair and I've never been disappointed, I've also never waited more than 15 minutes to get my cut. Great place overall! read more

The customer service was terrible, no one agreed me when I entered the store, and the hair cut is worst I have ever had...

i have nothing bad to say about this place. i'm a basic guy from MA who is used to inexpensive, non-flamboyant haircuts. i'm sure this place is capable of doing "hipster" cuts/styling just fine, but for what i needed (a basic cut), $20 isn't bad. run by VERY friendly vietnamese people, their prices are excellent, very clean business, and they sell paul mitchell tea tree oil products! (score!) my ONLY wish: ACCEPT CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS!!! its almost 2016, i was not a fan of having to walk all the way down piedmont to CVS to take out cash! i'll let it slide though ;) read more

Great haircuts, and great customer service overall. I come here whenever I need a haircut.

I miss having a stylist that could cut my hair so that it looked fantastic fresh-cut and still great after three weeks. The women's cuts here are okay, but the styling doesn't last very long without a stylist's help and that's when I've been unhappy. read more

Nice haircut for a nice price. Friendly staff; bright and clean salon.

Great hair salon! My domestic partner and I always wait for Han. He gives a great hair cut and is always a lot of fun. He listens carefully to how you want your haircut. I highly recommend BetterCuts and Han on Piedmont Avenue. read more

It's not hard to cut my bald head. But it needs to be done, and these folks do it right. Friendly and conversational, if you'd like. Clean and efficient. Han and Thrin are great. I don't go for 3 months and they great me warmly by name. All the little extras, too, that make it worth it to have someone else take care of you, instead of using the "vacuum-cutter" at home :-) read more

I am a recent transplant to Oakland and had been looking for a place to get a decent haircut and my brows done before a big date tonight. I walked in when they opened and had no other customers. I was assured by Karen that she would have time to do both, but "first I will do your haircut." (I had asked "Are you sure? I really want my brows done.") She didn't listen to how short I wanted it and I had to have her re-cut most of it. Then she spent an awful lot of time styling it, which I had not asked for, but which ended up costing me more. At the end of the long haircut, she informed me that the room for waxing brows was being used and she would not be able to do it. She asked me if I could come back later. Really? On a holiday weekend when I was the first customer and she said she could do it and it was the first thing I asked for? Then she had the nerve to overcharge me for the haircut and ask me to come back. I was completely dissatisfied with (1) the first haircut and having to ask her to do it again, (2) the lack of consideration for my request to get my brows done first, (3) the complete disregard of any employee not checking the schedule to see if there was even time to do my brows, and (4) the complete idiocy of asking me to please come back. My recommendations are: (1) go somewhere else, or if you must (2) make an appointment; (3) make what you want really, really clear to the staff there and (4) make it clear again. I will not be going back there anytime soon unless they offer to make it good for free. read more

Just moved to the bay area and I was relieved to find this place. Paula is amazing. First time I came home from a cut and my wife gave it two thumbs up. read more

I've gone to this salon in the past and before it was absolutely fine, but now it's anything but. Walking into the store with a friend we were received by a stylist cutting his toenails on the salon floor and walking around completely barefoot. There was bunches and bunches of hair PILES floating all over the place; on outlits, magazines you name it. While receiving my hair cut, I was told my hair was "difficult because of how fried it was". Being a natural, undyed blonde as well as a normal person, this comment pissed me off. My friend came in to trim some split ends and she left with drier ends and more breakage than she came in with. I will never come back to this place again; it may be cheap, but your paying for someone to insult and ruin your hair. read more

This place has really gone downhill. Unbelievably, they don't know how to cut hair there now. Too bad, because I was loyal to them for years. This LAST time I actually had to go somewhere else to have my hair fixed the next day. It may be inexpensive there but it's no longer a good deal. read more

The hair cutters are friendly and efficient, however this salon has one HUGE drawback. It does not sterilize its clippers after each client, which the law requires. I have tried to ask for this, but then the language barrier becomes impenetrable. I left a printed copy of the statute on the desk, to no avail. Spray bottles of disinfectant appeared on some counters, but my barber just blew on the clippers before cutting my hair. The result can be some serious itching, or even head lice. PLEASE guys, obey the law, protect your customers (and your business), and STERILIZE your clippers. Thanks in advance. read more

Hanh is the best anywhere. Nobody ever cuts my hair so that I like it, but Hanh does! Wow! Won't go anywhere else. Also, he's fun to talk to. read more

This review is long overdue, since it was back in March when I first went to Better Cuts for a haircut. I'm originally from a smallish city in the upper Midwest where for as long as I can remember, getting a haircut (whether a change of style or a simple trim), no matter who the stylist, meant assuming there would be a two-week period of waiting for it to grow out a little so that it would look somewhat as requested and could at least be styled in a presentable fashion. So my experience at Better Cuts after Hanh cut my hair was nothing short of amazing for me! My hair has always been difficult to deal with because it is fine but dense and naturally wavy (I'm Caucasian, btw). But Hanh understood exactly what I wanted and how little effort I wanted to make at styling it (basically meaning I wanted to be able to blow dry it upside down and not have to do much more than that) and I left with exactly what I wanted with no need to wait for it to grow out and no struggle to make it look good. This was the best haircut I have ever had. Hanh is a hair genius! read more

this place has a nice atmosphere but the people that work there are not friendly and do not know how to cut hair well. i went there with my girlfriend and she wanted to get her hair layered and cut a few inches in the back with long bangs. she proceeded to rinse her hair and trim the back of her head then blow dry it for 25 minutes. then she said she was done and charged us 30 dollars. this was ridiculous and i would never go back read more
