They've got a lot going on here- the students seem to be the DJs and they bring their own flavor of music with them. So don't expect to hear the same thing over and over and over and over like some of those top 40 stations. There's a good chance you'll never hear a song twice on here. Eclectic! There's some weird stuff on here. My favorite part is sort of the laid back attitude of the DJs. They're not all polished and professional like those Top 40 stations. Since it's a community radio station, they don't have advertisements every few minutes, like those Top 40 stations. In fact, they don't have any! It's all public service announcements, reminding you not to drive without a seat belt, or to wear a bicycle helmet. If you don't happen to be on the DePaul campus, you can still listen to this radio station on your smart speaker, or on their website, or even on their dedicated app!

EX DJ YELPING That…read moreis our top story tonight... Wow a lot has changed in 11 years. I use to have my own radio show on this station and also handled the sports too with my buddy Larry G. It was a lot of fun. The bad part is that the FCC really limited our FM signal, which meant I was broadcasting to a 6 block radius and the poor students eating in the cafe. Fast forward to 2013 and I am actually listening to DePaul Radio on my iPhone as I am writing my review. That is just crazy because I'm at least 2 miles away from the station. In fact, you can now hear this station worldwide on iTunes or watch them on a webcam. What a great opportunity for these future broadcasters. I hope they appreciate this because I would have been so excited for this kind of exposure. I have not been in the new station but it looks much nicer then what I was broadcasting from. We also had to splice tape too for our sport shows and interviews. I am sure the new studio is all digital. Handling the sports back then was fun. Larry and I would rolled up to the Rosemont Horizon (now called the Allstate Arena for all you young DePaul students) for the Mens Blue Demon basketball games with our press badges around our neck. We even got press parking right next to the stadium. It was even fun to get to eat with the real professional sports writers. Yes they feed us. This is the life! I had some great moments in my college radio career. I truly enjoyed interviewing an upset Alonzo Mourning after his Georgetown team got beat by DePaul. Yeah we had some good basketball teams in the past. I really wish they could return to the glory years. I also loved covering the women's basketball team too. I always enjoyed my one on one interviews with Coach Doug Bruno. He was always animated and a lot of fun. So my advice to these young broadcasters is this: learn as much as you can and do internships. Soak all of this in because it all changes in the real world. These will be some of your most memorable times, so enjoy every moment. I've got you tuned in and I'm enjoying it. Keep on spinning those records (those are those round things...no not CDs! Oh wait your probably spinning MP3's! Digital makes you life so easy!)

Came across this magazine a while back and still amazed they are not more known. They are pretty cool because they talk about not only my friends local band, but major acts that come through town too. They are crazy diverse. One article will be an interview with someone from Ministry and the next a review on Laura Marling. And I have yet to see a story on any flavor of the month bands. When I want to find out about music events happening around town, I don't have to wade through a ton of crap articles about food or gossip. They get to the point. What I really like about In The Loop Magazine is how they are apparently still independent and real. They are not filtered or censored -yet anyway. Love reading the original stories they do, although I wish they'd do more. Love the events calendar and how I can sync with it. The website is really clean, lots of stuff to read about, easy to navigate, cool videos and interviews I've never seen anywhere else again, including my friend local band. Not often you find somewhere that talks about the locals and the nationals. I love anything Chicago especially the Chicago music scene. These guys and gals get it. Nice job everyone! You've got me hooked! I'll stay in the loop with ya!

They play a local playlist of bands from Chicago, songs about Illinois, and talk about local political and social issues. Since this station is on the left side of the dial, there's no real commercials on here- it truly serves the community with the occasional public service announcement. Plus, they talk about things that other radio stations won't or can't have the time to discuss. The celebrate all the local holidays, and have some in-depth discussions on all things Chicago. These guys are the Public Radio affiliate for the Chicago area, and put out a lot of great programming! They have amazing on-air talent- Roy Blundt, Paula Poundstone, Mo Rocca, Bill Curtis, Peter Sagel- They all rock! Their other shows are quality- I've started listening to Curious City, which has questions about Chicago answered- a lot of them are about food and architecture. This American Life always has some thought provoking stuff, split up into a few short stories, with pitches for donations in between. Since they don't have regular commercials on here, they have to hit you up occasionally for cash. They have a few pledge drives annually, where they make you feel guilty for listening and not chipping in. They make it seem that Mo Rocca is living under a bridge with his meager pay from NPR, and Bill Curtis spends his spare time shaking a tin cup to support public radio programming. If you'd just chip in a few dollars a day, maybe Paula Poundstone could care for her cats better, or Tom Bodette could stay somewhere better than the Motel 6. You can tune into WBEZ on a smart speaker, or tune in locally. Some of their original programming is syndicated nationwide on your local NPR affiliate. The best thing about WBEZ is their employees, and the people who have worked to make this a great station.

So, this review is mostly for the Waddle and Silvy show, but as a whole, I love this radio station…read more- well, the local shows and hosts anyway. But that's my one problem with this station...there aren't enough local shows! I much prefer the local personalities on this radio station as compared to those on another local sports talk radio station. However, I'm forced to listen to the other said station in the evenings and on the weekends, because ESPN airs mostly national shows during these times! It's sad because I love ESPN local radio. My exceptions to this are Bruce Levine, Fred Huebner, and Mike Murphy. Bruce is so far up the Cubs @ss, it's not even funny. I can't listen to a word he says. Fred is just annoying to listen to because I don't feel like he knows very much and Mike Murphy...where do I start with this one? I'm not sure who made the decision to put him back on the radio, but he/she needs to be fired - IMMEDIATELY! So, back to what I love about this station...Waddle and Silvy! I heart them. They get me through my day at work and make me laugh out loud many times a day. I'm pretty sure the people that sit near me at work think I'm completely nuts, but I'm okay with it. I'm not sure what I'd do without them! My employer does not allow web streaming and I can't get the AM radio to come in in the Loop so I'm relegated to the podcast, which means I'm listening to Monday's show on Tuesday (and so on), which is annoying, but I need my fix so I'll take it any way I can get it. And then there's CJH...I like this group, but I don't download their podcasts. If I can catch them on the radio now and then, I'm good. I will say, Carmen is a marked improvement over Mac. He was a pompous @ss and I'm glad he's gone! Jurko is my favorite - he cracks me up. I don't always agree with his thoughts, but he's funny as hell. I also really like JD, Hood and most of the reporters. I just wish this station had more local programming in the evenings and on the weekends! I'm forced to go elsewhere during these times and I'm not happy about it.
