I used to commute from the Ravenswood/Lincoln Square area down to Hyde Park and back every day. For four years. Now I live in Hyde Park, and have a 10 minute walk through the gardens on the Midway Plaisance. There is one thing I mourn from my commuting days, and that is all of the time I spent listening Chicago Public Radio.
I still manage to listen to it every day, but let's face it: I certainly am unable to give it its 2 hour face time I used to. Here are some of my favorite shows: On the Media, Eight Forty-Eight, Fresh Air, This American Life, Radio M, Sound Opinion, Afro-Pop Worldwide, Wait, Wait don't Tell Me, Sound Lab...the list goes on and on.
It's just such a fantastic station that has such an impact on the community. Hurray for Julia McEvoy and her dedicated coverage of Chicago Public Schools. Hurray for the offices in neighborhoods as diverse and in need of a voice in the media, like Englewood and Humboldt Park. Hurray for "This I Believe" and the "Third Coast Festival." And yes, even hurray for Ira Glass, even though he has moved to New York.
I renewed my membership last night, at $12 a month. In addition to the membership card, which gets you two-for-one tickets to the Steppenwolf, and two-for-one meals at places like Piccolo Mondo and Delice, I got a subscription to The New Yorker and The Atlantic Monthly. How generous is that?
I just feel that in this time of political and economic uncertainty, and when the media is becoming much more corrupt and special-interest driven, it's important to have an independent voice that considers "all things," and makes an effort to connect you to your community and the world.
