Came across this magazine a while back and still amazed they are not more known. They are pretty cool because they talk about not only my friends local band, but major acts that come through town too. They are crazy diverse. One article will be an interview with someone from Ministry and the next a review on Laura Marling. And I have yet to see a story on any flavor of the month bands. When I want to find out about music events happening around town, I don't have to wade through a ton of crap articles about food or gossip. They get to the point. What I really like about In The Loop Magazine is how they are apparently still independent and real. They are not filtered or censored -yet anyway. Love reading the original stories they do, although I wish they'd do more. Love the events calendar and how I can sync with it. The website is really clean, lots of stuff to read about, easy to navigate, cool videos and interviews I've never seen anywhere else again, including my friend local band. Not often you find somewhere that talks about the locals and the nationals. I love anything Chicago especially the Chicago music scene. These guys and gals get it. Nice job everyone! People being weekly seemed fresh and current many years ago but in this 24/7 news cycle, almost everything on its pages has been seen and reported on long before it hits the stands. (And in its attempt not to play in the dirt with other magazines, it's become the fawning mouthpiece for every PR flack in NY and LA.) Yawn. Dahlings…read more Chicago Social, n/k/a CS, is a glitzy, glossy, free magazine which is distributed to condo buildings and news boxes in certain areas downtown and on the north side. Since CS is free, anyone and everyone from the unwashed masses to the landed gentry who bathe in C-Notes can pick up a copy and get up to speed on local dining, parties, shopping, clothing, interior design and who's who in the local social scene (read: benefit attendees). Since CS is glossy, you can sit in your Gold Coast condo and spill your champagne on it or in your Rogers Park hovel and spill Diet RC on it and still be no worse for the wear, as the spillage will run right off, and you can continue perusing high culture. Dahling, isn't that fah-bulous? Ooh-kay, gurl? Basically, what CS is is a bunch of advertising and rah-rah PR that caters to those with substantial disposable income, those who clamor to one day have substantial disposable income and the pretentious who fall somewhere in the middle. Holla. It's about restaurants, shopping, clothing, jewelry, real estate, interior design and parties. It's to be taken more as entertainment than as informational, and it's always to be taken with a grain of salt. No publication with opinions written in the pretentious first person plural (e.g., "We felt the decor, ambiance and sushi were simply fabulous") is to be taken seriously on general principle. Probably the best part of CS is the section with the party photos. It's always interesting to see where the who's who and celebs are partying, with whom and whether or not they're hot. One must know every month where Bill Kurtis and Donna LaPietra are partying, or one may not be able to go out on the social scene for fear of embarrassment when discourse convenes over cocktails. Whether you're dirt poor or filthy rich, we recommend picking up a copy of CS monthly. It's an amazing way to plug into local society and get up to speed on everything that's fabulous locally. The glossy covers and high end advertisements are only the beginning. The magazine has a true and honest connection to the city often featuring our own on the cover and in the pages. Located in boxes all around the city, the closest to me is at N Cannon and Fullerton, located next to a bus stop. Hey even the high society of Chicago Social appreciates public transportation.

Decent free magazine that you can find just about anywhere in Chicago. It covers music, movies and…read moresuch. There are reviews for restaurants, new music and movies as well. It definitely seems to want to draw in the urban hipsters but seems to be a bit stale in doing a solid job of it. The hipsters probably read something else anyway since pretty much everyone knows that the Chicago Tribune also puts out this little magazine. I noticed Redeye also put out a movie newspaper which was also free. It covered new releases but overall that newspaper was pretty much just full of ads with just a small movie section. Not my first choice on magazines but it is free so what the hell, I pick it up anyway.

Crain's is the local business complement to the Wall Street Journal. It's a quick and…read moreentertainingly colorful tabloid. Printed on high quality paper so you don't have dirty fingers when you put it down. Solid columnists. They're not afraid to write original articles and take stands on local government policy and openly discuss bureaucratic corruption. Greg Hinz is mildly annoying but makes up for it with surprisingly piercing insight and wit. My favorite regular feature is the back page Info Junkie column where they take a local business bigwig and ask them what pubs they subscribe to, most recently read and favorite books. And their multitude of yearly lists, like Chicago's 40 under 40 and the Big Book of Lists are the epitome of coolness in a business pub.
