Sven better wake up before his ratings start to slip. Nobody on TV is so big they will never be cancelled if the ratings drop. There are hundreds if not thousands of great old movies full of monsters,and nature gone haywire, don't go in the basement or the old attic types, but Svens programmers keep showing the same ones over and over. A lot of us have been very disappointed over the last few months hoping to see something good for a change, but Halloween 2023 was the last straw. Other free channels had some great movies on. Vell, since I have seen people review other people (I already reviewed Mayor Daley) I decided to vrite a much deserved review for Chicago's Own Master of the Macabre, Svengoolie! (Sven has been mentioned on other reviews for WCIU, but he didn't have his own page till now vith my first review.) So, vho else (in this day and age) is more of a Chicago icon than him, eh?! I've been vatching Sven since his early "Son of..." days right up to his present WCIU "grown-up" Svengoolie incarnation for the last 12 years. I've had the pleasure of getting to know the man personally for over 10 years now! Also, last year I vas acquired the opportunity to be seen on his show via a taped segment that vas filmed during the costume contest at the annual Flashback Weekend's Chicago Horror Convention & Drive-In from Rosemont, IL. One of my favorite Horror memories was of watching a movie on a warm Saturday night back in the summer of 79. I believe it was Universal's Dracula or one of the Dracula movies. The movie creeped the bejeebus out of this little 10 year old girl, but during the breaks this hilarious dude in the top hat made me giggle and took my fears away :). That man was Son of Svengoolie (aka Rich Koz). Now he's all grown up and we can call him Svengoolie! After nearly 30 years he is still going strong and making his audience laugh and groan at his antics. He is even showing the Universal movies again - yay!!! Somebody needs to build two statues. The first will be of Svengoolie, he will be portrayed with a rubberchicken hitting him in the face, with terrible alice cooper makeup and it should stand in Berwyn. May I recommend the vacant location of the sadly removed 'car spike'. Of course that is in BERRRRRRWYYYYNNN. The second is of Rich Koz. I can't really chill out watching the three stooges, but its okay that he hosts stooge-a-palooza. Remember the Koz Zone? Seriously, this guy is to local UHF television in the digital age what Garrison Keillor is to public radio in, well, the digital age. I've heard rumors that this season may be svengoolie's last. Please please, heads of channel 26 WCIU (um, the u'z guys, right... youse guys?) when Rich Koz retires his hallowed, inverted crown (and I hope he dies filming...and becomes undead) PLEASE keep the Svengoolie name alive. The reason Rich Koz was once 'Son of Svengoolie' was there was one before. He took the "Son of" out of respect and the original contacted him and told him he could have the name (or so the story goes). So please, youse guys, keep it undead. When I'm stuck home on a Saturday night, I watch Sven. He makes my tail wag. Especially when he sings. I sometimes text my friend Dave when he's on. We make it our own MST3000 special on top of what Sven does. I just wish he would do a little more interaction with some of the flicks. That's what make these sometimes unwatchable movies good. Who else had the balls to air Creature of the Black Lagoon in 3D , forcing all the cool ones to head to 7-11 and score some bitchen 3-D glasses. I would watch Godzilla movies , crappy 70's horror flicks , and your classic Universal monsters. At the commercial breaks , Sven would throw down some schtick that was way over my pre pubescent head. Somehow, and I'm still working on the exact details and road map, Svengoolie is responsible for the person I've grown into. I remember the exact first time I ever saw Son of Svengoolie. It was back in the very early 1980's and I was at my cousin's house. We were up late and he flipped on channel 32, where we watched the Son of Svengoolie present Bella Legosi as Dracula. I was absolutely hooked, not only on Svengoolie, but on the original Universal horror classics. I also remember running to the 7-11 on the corner of Belmont and Austin to get my free Son of Svengoolie 3D glasses so I could watch the TV premier of the Creature From the Black Lagoon in 3D! I was heart broken when Sven was canceled, only to have my spirits lifted with the Rich Koz resurgence in the late 80's. Then, one night, out of nowhere, Sven was back! Holy crap! And it was good! Seriously, my days as a goofy lookin' goth kid, my love of the Misfits, Rocky Horror, old movies, dumb humor, rubber chickens, etc can all be linked, somehow back Svengoolie. Yeah Sven is one of those all or nothing dudes. You can't expect his whole get up and personal show to be any better because it is what it is, you either love him or you think he's lame and you change the channel. That is, if you can get away from the awesome horror flick they're playing Saturday night at a reasonable time. The only complaint I have about Svengoolie is that I'm usually up a lot later and I'd love it if he was on at say, 4am instead of the Shamwow guy so I could watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers instead of find out that the 'Germans make good stuff'. If I ever went to a horror convention I'd totally want to meet this guy. read more

Son of Svengoolie was the gr eatest, I there are 11 in our family. Saturday nights waws a night for home made pizza, with lots of mozzarella chesse. watching the spooky movies, in the dark eating and drinking cool aid, surrounding our selfs as mom use to say that was the best way to watch movies. even with my son and daughter we continued the tradition. yesss it is to great to pass these kinds of years of oa great tradition. thanks svengoolie if only some people could pass this kind of tradition to their children we would have less trouble in the street on saturday nights. we be in home enjoying svengoolie. thanks sven always be a place in my front room with my grand kids. read more

Svengoolie and Saturday night are synonymous around our house. My seven-year-old begs for a few more minutes of Svengoolie each week. (His bedtime is 9:00).
