This was actually a pretty good hotel for travelers/businessmen going through the Billings area.

The name of the hotel makes sense when you realize it's near the railroad track. It makes even more sense when you find out the railroad (BNSF Railway & Montana Rail Link) has a contract for the entire second floor of the hotel to give their employees a place to stay between shifts. It's an older hotel (they still have in-room landline phones), the rooms are bigger than most and despite the location, it's quiet. The front desk staff was very accommodating and more than willing to make sure my stay was exactly right. The internet worked well, the in-room coffee was good, and the better-than-average continental breakfast was an even nicer surprise. There's a fitness center next to the hotel, with 24-hour access, although I'm not sure in the current environment it's still open during the very late evening/early morning hours. The hotel is across from the grocery store and next door to a couple of local restaurants, all within walking distance actually, but because the hotel is along the main street, you might need to consider if walking across the street to the grocery store is a choice you want to make during busy traffic times unless you do the unthinkable -- actually cross where there's a traffic light. If you're okay with older, but clean, hotel with updated amenities, this might be a good option. It's even better if you're traveling the interstate and don't want a spot too far away from it.

Your first view of the log cabin lodge reveals an unpretentious structure that is very roomy inside with a large common room that serves as a gathering/breakfast space, seeming to be, with the loft, a nice facility for groups. The Lodge is constructed of logs that remained after a fire consumed 12,000 acres including much of the ranch. The hosts Ruth and Blick shared their story about the building of the lodge which we found fascinating. Our rooms were very spacious with cathedral ceilings with outside entrances/porches. A pond lies just outside the Lodge and a stream just steps further(our fishing skills were too limited to take advantage of those opportunities). Cattle graze all around the site as part of its ranch setting in the coulee and we saw turkeys and deer along the road. Breakfasts were simple but good with large portions and very accommodating (we needed breakfast at 7 AM and it was on the table right on time each day). The long rock/dirt lane road made us wonder whether we were in the right place but signage assured us that we were. The road also encouraged us to stay in during the evenings which was fine for us and resulted in a very tranquil stay. This was our first exposure to Montana "ranch" life and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Preparing meals together was a valuable experience during the reunion. Six individual rooms like hotel rooms -- private bath, closet and area to unpack suitcases, towels, linen, roll-away beds, clock-radios, porch-space outside. High ceilings and quaint log construction. Large common area for dining and socializing. Internet by satellite -- adequate for Email and web, but you won't be streaming video. Cell phones out of range, but you can get cell service by driving 1.5 miles up the road to the ridgetop. Hiking and some fishing on the stream nearby. Large pond for a canoe or raft. Garden flowers and green lawn. Cattle on the surrounding ranch are entertainment. Near enough to Big Timber. The only shortcoming: this area recovering from a fire a few years ago; surrounding hillsides show dead twisted trees with new trees only beginning to grow -- namesake "Burnt Out" lodge. Would certainly go back again; would certainly recommend.

Joliet is a small town on the way to one of the entrances to Yellowstone Park. There are no big-name hotels in this area, so you need to rely on the small-town often family-run businesses. Botts is that! You can't even make a reservation online. You have to call. How old school is that? But I like it. It's the personal touch. The fun thing about these small, non-chain places, is how unusual the rooms can be. This was no exception. When I walked in, there was a table for working with the coffee maker, the bed -- the usual, on the other side was the entrance to the very large bathroom. The room was set up as an L-shape and around the corner from the bathroom entrance, was a mini-living room. Two chairs, one a recliner, facing the large tv. Seriously? How amazing is that? The bed was good, comfortable, the pillows were okay -- but probably need a refresh, the wi-fi was good, the room was quiet, although I could hear the people in the room next to me who were having a good time yelling at the football game on their tv -- at least until it was over and then it was so quiet and the curtains kept the room so dark, that I overslept the next morning. It was a good day.
