The Worst Contractor Experience of My Life -- Avoid Best Choice Roofing
Working with Best Choice Roofing was hands down the worst experience I've ever had with any contractor -- and honestly, one of the worst experiences of my life. It was so bizarre and unprofessional that it's almost hard to believe.
It started off fine. They promised to handle everything with the insurance company. But that was the last thing that went smoothly. I constantly had to chase them for updates. They'd miss deadlines, not call back, and nearly blew the entire claim because of confusion they created with the adjuster. I had to put in a ridiculous amount of work just to keep things moving.
When the actual work was scheduled, they no-showed on day one with no call or warning. I had to track them down and was told they didn't show due to a 45% chance of rain (which turned out to be more like 15% -- and it never rained). They eventually rescheduled and promised to arrive between 7-8 a.m. but showed up at 5 a.m. -- which I was actually fine with.
The crew didn't include a single English speaker, including the supervisor. All communication had to go through Google Translate. I had warned them multiple times that we had just done extensive landscaping, with hundreds of dollars of flowers planted around the house. They promised to protect everything. Instead, they laid a tarp on top of the flowerbeds and threw shingles onto it from the roof. Flowers? Crushed. I had to stop them repeatedly from destroying more.
It gets worse. We had a brand new $2,000 gazebo in the backyard. They threw debris and shingles directly onto it, denting the metal roof. They also had no debris management -- no raised dumpsters like most roofers use. Just constant mess.
Then a neighbor came over to inform me her 12-year-old daughter saw one of the workers urinate off the roof of my house. Yes, seriously. When I confronted the supervisor (via Google Translate), he claimed maybe they threw a water bottle. Really?
After the job was done, I discovered the attic was full of nails and shingle debris. No one warned us to cover anything. My wife found that a worker had even written his name in the dust on the bathroom window upstairs. Classy.
Weeks later, the first big rain came -- and so did the leak. Water was pouring into our downstairs bathroom and dripping down the walls. They came out to "fix" it and just slapped some paint over the ceiling. No surprise -- the next rain brought the same leak. When I pushed back, they told me if I wanted it done right, I'd have to pay another $1,000. Eventually, they agreed to fix it, but left siding unpainted, caulk incomplete, and the valley repair looked like a DIY nightmare. Multiple roofers I showed the photos to said they'd never seen anything like it.
Then they had the nerve to send someone out with a bill for $1,500 for that mess. I told them to take me to court -- I never agreed to any charges, especially for a problem they caused.
A few weeks later, one of their guys came by to pick up the final insurance check. He wrote me a receipt on a scrap of paper. Then, weeks after that, they claimed they didn't have the check and needed me to sign it. It was the same one -- but I signed it just to be done. Over the next three months, they kept calling with more "clerical errors" -- the final time saying I owed $300 for decking (which was never installed). I told them to never call me again.
I've dealt with plenty of contractors before. I've heard the horror stories. But Best Choice Roofing stands out as the most unprofessional, disorganized, and careless company I've ever encountered. They caused damage to our home, ruined landscaping, left a mess, handled communication poorly, and treated us like we were the problem.
They claim to be one of the largest roofing companies in the country. Maybe so -- but in my opinion, they're also one of the worst. Avoid them at all costs. read more
