This is a little hard to get to. You have to drive all the way down to the end of 38th street. The entrance way(which is a stretch of dirt over a train track) is between Three Rivers Packaging and Edward Marc Chocolatier. Apparently, you can park in that area. The park is all dirt and there is water there for your dogs and some benches to sit on. This is not a place to go in the rain as it will get muddy or at night as it would be a prime place for crime. read more

Two fenced in areas with a smaller one for little or skittish dogs. Bowls with water are all over and benches for humans when we need a rest. I have been babysitting my friend's four legged friend and thought, "Why not take him to the Dog Run." Logical right? I mean he is a dog, and it is a park for dogs! The walk there was a little muddy. I know that it is part of the river path and nature-y but it was muddy. This little guy is a stumpy legged little dog so he got dirty. Sadface. I get to the park and I am walking past the "big dog" section and it was nice. The ground had a nice look to it. It was not muddy and did not have a lot of weeds growing around. It looked well kept. I was happy and looking forward to the "little dog" section. Boy, was I surprised. It was full of long weeds and the ground was full of puddles. No bark (ha-ha) was put down and it looked unkempt. There were a lot of dogs in the big dog section and my little guy was the only one in the little section. I would say if you have a big dog, great this is a park for you. Smaller dogs I would say be aware of what you are going in for. Your dog mostly will not have other dogs to run around with and the section is not as nice as the big dog section with the nice trees and larger well kept area. I like the idea, I just hope that both sides would be well taken care of. read more

Didn't really know what we were getting into when we headed here but it turned out to be a great experience. Good to knows: there is a parking lot for the park and walking trail closer to 39th street but the gps took us on 38th and we walked through the Snappers parking lot. It was a Sunday so it wasn't a problem but I wouldn't want to be walking through there during walking hours. Pros: the other owners there were extremely nice. My puppy is aggressively friendly and wants to sit in everyone's lap and lick them, and they handled it very well. A few of the men had even gotten some hay to attempt to make the park less muddy. Appreciated the community and contribution feel. Cons: It had just rained (no surprise with pittsburgh) so it was terribly muddy. My puppy has never been so filthy. Be sure to bring a towel. My dog absolutely loved it and it was a great space to run. Highly recommend. read more

This dog park is wonderfully convenient to those that live in Lawrenceville! Unfortunately, when it is raining, it kinda of turns into a mud pit which isn't the best for dog parents of pups that like to roll around while playing with other dogs. It would be nice if the city seeded/sodded in the spring so there would be some nice grass for the doggos this summer! read more

As a new puppy owner, the dog park can be a really intimidating experience. What if my dog bites someone? What if my dog gets bitten? There is a lot of anxiety about how the dogs will react to one another when you've never had your dog in that situation. That being said, I have only had great experiences here, with not only dogs but also their owners! Living in Polish Hill, this is a nice stroll away from home and a great opportunity to socialize my puppy. The park has two separate fenced in areas so you can gauge which group your dog will be better suited. I usually start my little guy off in the less crowded area and then move over with the big dogs if I think he can handle it. Hanging around with different people at dog parks has made me love the culture that surrounds them. You can really feel the love that people have for their dogs. People who are willing to put the effort into taking their dogs to a dog park seem to see a real importance of exposing your dog to other dogs---teaching them how to play, to resolve conflict and also to keep them exercised! My puppy gets easily intimidated and sometimes growls and snarls at dogs that get right up in his face, especially other puppies. All of the other owners that I've met here have been so friendly, respectful, helpful and loving to my puppy. It creates a level of comfort that I wasn't sure I'd ever have within the chaos of dogs running around chasing each other. The only thing complaint I have is that the park isn't very well marked, so if it's your first time going, it might be difficult to find it--especially when driving. There is a parking lot and once you make it there, head to the left and you'll find a trail that will lead you right to the park. Come play with me and Otto! read more

We have never taken our dog to a dog park, so we figured we would try it out. It was a little bit difficult to find, so we just started walking on the trail at 40th street and eventually found it. I liked how there was a double gate to get in to keep the dogs protected from getting out easily. The park has so much space and toys for them to play with and run. There are also two areas which was great. Our dog wasn't extremely friendly (she's an only child and doesn't know how to share) so we unfortunately had a short trip. The other dog moms were great though and very understanding. Hopefully we will be back in the future! read more

This dog park is ridiculous! The city doesn't even stock the park with dogs to play with! One is expected to bring their own dog to the park if they want to play with a dog without a leash within this park. So after learning that I had to bring my own dogs, I snapped on the leash to my Fattie's collar and dragged her down to BDP. She needed to burn off calories from indulging in all of the doggie bag leftovers. The vet has expressed concerned about Little Miss Fattie's weight. She's a mini dachshund/terror mix and in the last nine months went from what they said was "normal" weight to "obese". (Her weight issues started right at the same time Mr.Toddler started feeding himself. He finds delight in throwing handfuls of food AT her. There's no proven correlation between our dining doggie bags and her weight issues. But we're aware & cutting them back) So off to the Bernard Dog Park Little Miss Fattie and I went. Now, keep in mind that Fattie is @ 14 lbs with mostly dachshund body. And an attitude problem. I made the executive decision for her play with the big dogs. It's what we have done at other dog parks divided by weight. Fattie has two male large breed canine siblings. At home she is brave because her mastiff brother is her muscle, backing her up with deep barks. Which is in response to Fattie's perceived non existent threats that are all other humans. (Our other large male dog thinks they're ridiculous. They are.) Since she plays with the force of a small dog wrestling a dog 10xs times her weight, I find larger dogs are the best playmates for Fattie. Fattie loves other dogs but is suspicious of other people. She was rescued from an Ohio puppy mill. An ongoing issue at South Side Dog Park is its very busy. My dog is very cute and docile looking. Humans constantly try to grab at her, pick her up, or pet her without asking. That scares her. Thankfully the BDP is not as crowded. No humans have tried petting or grabbing Fattie! (Excellent) Little Miss Fattie had a great time playing with a Doberman puppy and a Mastiff adult dog on our first trip. We had such a fantastic time & successful experience this looks to become our preferred park. There isn't always action or other dogs in this dog park. However, if you're like us, we prefer such a park. The chaos of other city dog parks is too much for our broad at times. So if you're at the Bernard Dog Park in the Big Dog Play area & find your 120 lb dogs being enamored by a 14lb Fattie dachshund/terror with stubbie legs, & that dogs full of suspicion towards humans ; please come and introduce yourself. Lawrenceville is already pretty dog-friendly but this dog park is a fantastic addition to the area, down by Three Rivers Heritage trail near the 40th street bridge. There's separate areas for medium/big dogs and small/infirm dogs. I really like that the big area has a small forested area that the pups can explore, rather than having cleared out all the natural foliage. So far, the dogs and owners have been well-behaved when we've visited. Everyone's pleasant and it's great to talk dog-shop with other owners while the boys and girls socialize (ie, sniff various body parts). read more

Fitzgerald loves the Lawrenceville dog park! Unlike other dog parks in town, the mulch is great for keeping muddy areas at bay. The size for running is perfect. You can catch us there at least 5 days a week! I wish it had a little more tree coverage for shade for those earlier dog park days... read more

This place has been a godsend for us. Our now 9 month old Great Dane, Martha, loves it down there and has an absolute blast running back and forth and rolling around with the other dogs. Everyone, both people and dogs, are friendly and really make visiting a fun time. read more

So since my last review the park has rules and signs, and drinking bowls (they're chained to the goddamn fence people you can't steal them). No more bringing those cheaply made bowls from Rite Aid that get looted after you forget to take them with you. read more

The brief trail walk to the dog run is quiet and secluded, as is the dog run itself. The double-door entrance is great for dogs who consider themselves to be escape artists. There's two fenced-in spots connected by the entrance, presumably for small dogs and large dogs to have separate areas. There's plenty of benches for dog owners; and, bowls for dogs to have a drink. The ground is covered in wood chips, which is nice because it cuts down on the muddy factor in wet weather. There's also quite a bit of natural vegetation inside and surrounding this riverside gem. People were friendly and most dogs were well behaved. There was a steady flow of activity, coming and going, while we were there. With the location under the 40th Street Bridge, I'm not so sure I'd venture to visit at night; however, it's a great location on a nice day. The only way to improve the dog run would be to have a few more garbage cans and maybe a water fountain. Overall, I definitely recommend Bernard Dog Run to owners and dogs alike! read more

Never again! I usually take my dog weekdays after work, around 4:30 PM or later. The "happy hour" crowd that goes down there are the most irresponsible, disrespectful group of dog owners that I have ever encountered. It's more of a social setting for the humans than the dogs. People bring their aggressive dogs, and let them run wild in the park while they sip on their beer and talk with other dog owners, oblivious to the growls, snarls, and fights that break out in the interim. I have NEVER. In the year that we have been trying this park out. Never been there on a weekday after work where there isn't a fight. And the dog owners don't even make an attempt to break it up until one of the more attentive dog owners start yelling. The straw that broke the camels back for us was that the last time we were here, my dog was taking a break and napping at my feet when a dog came running over out of nowhere and attacked my dog. Then I grabbed the dog by her harness and held her so she would stop attacking my dog (who at this point was crying and bleeding on the bench). The owner of the other dog came and yelled AT ME for holding his dog off of mine. He didn't apologize that my dog was bleeding, he didn't ask me if we were alright, he asked how dare I touch his dog. I have taken my dog there on rare occasion and had a nice time with nice dogs and attentive owners, but I'm sad to say, the majority of the time we've had a bad experience. read more
