Relocated to the area and went in for a new patient visit. after 7 (yes seven) attempts to refill a heartworm prescription I gave up. I provided all documentation from my prior vet in Maine, gave them contact info for my prior vet, repeatedly called and was left on hold and otherwise given terrible service. it is a gang that cannot shoot straight operation, Very happy with new vet in Rio Rancho. got it right the first time with no problem. life is too short for terrible service. And our pets deserve caring treatment. Definitely avoid Bernalillo Pet Care at all costs!. read more

I am very upset with this vet clinic now. My dog had an emergency where he had a cut on his toes. I had never been to this facility, but they said they could see him, so I brought him in. Dr. Sullivan briefly examined him and said he needed stitches. She said she would mildly sedate him. I waited for the procedure to be done. I did ask how things were going and was told they were waiting for my dog to wake up. The vet techs, assistants etc. helped me walk him to my car to go home. I thanked one of them for getting him to be seen so quickly. I also recommended them on the Nextdoor app to someone looking for an emergency vet, as well as an acquaintance looking for same. After my dog was home, he threw up and I called them. To cut to the chase of why I am upset, I called them about a concern with his healing. They wanted to know if I got their letter, which I didn't. Then I was told they sent me a letter not to come back because I was rude. I went to get my mail and saw they also said that I violated their dress code. I have no idea wth they were talking about. They wouldn't give me specific instances when I asked. I don't recall being rude or disrespectful. I was worried about my dog when I was there. I had praised them and later recommended them. I was very hurt by these accusations and personal attacks. I took down the recommendation online. So putting that aside, here are the things that bothered me about them, which I otherwise would not have said. Firstly, the exam room floor really looked dirty. Secondly, the vet spent a minimum of time with me - only a few minutes when I brought him in. Thirdly, they put the wrong size Elizabethan collar on him and he had to go back for another. Last, but not least, my idea of "mild sedation" is not one that knocks him out - which they did. Only after he threw up did I realize they knocked him out without asking if he had already eaten or had anything to drink. That could have killed him if he threw up while knocked out. He potentially could have aspirated vomit and died. So really, before they start throwing accusations at me (or anyone), they should think twice about their own issues. Fortunately my dog only threw up after surgery. He threw up twice and was looking sick until he got back on his feet. It hurt me to see him like that. I was grateful they got him in so quickly and since he was overall better in the end, I would not have mentioned any of this but for their hurtful letter full of accusations demeaning me. I have been to many vets in my life and have never been treated like this. One of my former vets used to leave his textbooks around for me to read when I came in, out of respect for my intelligence. My dog is still healing, but now I have to cope with hurt and shock over what they said about me. I barely go into Bernalillo anymore due to too many bad experiences with racism against whites. I only went this time because it was an emergency. After this, I will avoid the town altogether. read more

AWESOME animal care resource!!!! These folks have got so much empathy and kindness in them for the animals. They recently had a dog from the east mountains that had to be trapped to be rescued. She was named Lil Red for those who know the story. She totally shut down in the shelter. She likely would've been put down in most other facilities, but they gave her the time and attention she needed to be able to find a loving home. We are so lucky to have an organization such as this to help us with our pets. Please consider them when you're thinking of adding a pet to your family and go see what's available before you go anywhere else, especially to buy a pet. Please also consider donating to them as every shelter and rescue can always use donations. Thank you Eric for your kindness and help. read more

Had a horrible and it seemed like this business is trying to take advantage of new customers. After scheduling appointments for my English Bulldogs approx a week in advance, I received an email confirmation and all "seemed" well. The appointment came up this morning and my wife, myself, and our two dogs show up to the business on time. The receptionist even called my dogs by first names, but then immediately went into an explanation that they had not received confirmation that we would in fact be attending the scheduled appointment and that it must be received 48 hours in advance. We asked if we would be able to set the veterinarian at all, she said yes you can see the vet but it will require a walk in emergency appt which also, key here also, there would be an additional fee! Well, there are no 48 hour confirmation requirement documented on the email confirmation or on their website. Shysters running this business and I do not recommend taking your pets there, especially if you are a new customer. My Google review had a reply from the so called owner, stating that they tried calling multiple times and left a voice mail. Only part of that message is true, they called me one time @1:30PM on Friday before the Monday appt. There was no voicemail, and not multiple calls. So be aware of this business. I hate giving bad reviews, but this business should suffer the consequences until they adjust their new pet policy. If you're an existing customer, you might want to watch the gouging elsewhere on your bills when you pay out. read more

Do not! do not! Take your pet here. I took my dog in because his eye was red and draining,we were taken into a room where the vet tech did the intake,I was fully expecting the vet to come in and examine my dog but instead my dog was taken to another room to supposedly be examined by a vet,my dog was brought back in where we waited for the vet who eventually came in and said that my dog had a corneal abrasion because small dogs tend to get them, I asked if a corneal stain was done I was told no and offered a thyroid test? I was given an antibiotic for the dogs eye and sent home, after a week the eye got worse so against better judgement I took him back,I was told the corneal abrasion was healing but then given a different eye antibiotic, an oral antibiotic, a pain pill and a muscle relaxer because apparently now my dog had disk issues even though no X-rays were done.the pills I was given were supposed to be cut in half but were so badly cut some were cut in thirds and fourths, after finishing the oral antibiotics the dog seemed to be feeling better but the eye was still red, several days later I was petting my dogs face and he yelped,I noticed a walnut sized lump on his cheek the second I touched it, it burst and was full of pus, this happened on the Thanksgiving weekend so I couldn't get him into a vet for 4 days, the abscess continued to drain it was vile, when I got him into a new vet they irrigated the abscess with betadine which came squirting out of the dogs mouth and eye,he was diagnosed with an abscessed tooth which will now have to be surgically removed.my dog suffered for weeks when these clowns played "guess what's wrong with the dog" They should have their licenses revoked.I wouldn't even recommend taking a pet rock to these back alley vets. I've posted pics of my dogs facial abscess read more

No stars. Do not recommend! Our family had a terrible experience at this clinic. We recently moved to the area and needed to bring our pups in for annual shots. The reception staff/vet tech were fine, but the vet we saw (Dr. Aurora Torres) literally appeared afraid of dogs! She took each of our dogs into a separate room for a private exam which I have never seen or heard of. You are supposed to examine the dog with the owners present so that you can discuss any concerns etc. One of our pups has a genetic leg deformation, but he gets around just fine (literally runs up and down our stairs all day) - to which Dr Torres blurts out "recommended" we amputate because he's "essentially a three legged dog already!" He shows no symptoms of pain, uses all 4 legs and is a healthy joy. Her awkward behavior and demeanor paired with a secretive exam and an absolutely abrupt and uncalled for most-extra me case only recommendation left me in tears for 2 days. We wrote to wage an official complaint and the clinic leader stood behind this obtuse recommendation and told us to find another vet. I've never been so upset by an annual immunization appointment ever. You and your pets deserve better. I cannot recommend this office to anyone. read more

Bernalillo Pet Care Center was a life saver! In this time of covid craziness, my cat was having an emergency and even our regular vet would not make time to see him! The emergency vet clinics wanted us to wait for FIVE hours outside in our car!! In desperation, I called all of the vets I could find and Bernalillo Pet Care Center did what I would have thought any vet clinic would do, which was make room in their schedule for a pet with an emergency! They got us in within an hour from when I called. Even though this clinic is out of the way, from where I live, I will ALWAYS come back to them for any of my pet's needs. The staff was wonderful, friendly and caring! They have a great system in place that lets you actually go into the exam room with your pet and actually speak face to face with a vet. (which is a rarity these days too!) The vet was amazing! Super knowledgable and HAPPY to answer all of my questions. I'm sure she was busy, but she didn't seem rushed at all. The cost was incredibly reasonable! All around a great experience! Any my cat is doing great! read more

AVOID this business at all Costs. They are very expensive, charging for tests that were actually useless. I got talked into the tests even though I had my doubts. My old dog lost his life after being put through several weeks of severe pain. I suspected he was coming to the end of his life and went there originally to have him examined and euthanized with Peace and Comfort. Dr. Benham refused and had the audacity to accuse me of not caring for my pet. I was told if I no longer want him, she would find a "good home" for him. This HURT DEEPLY. No longer will I use to this clinic. A previous review mentioned dirty exam rooms, I also experienced this. read more

I would give this horrible veterinary practice zero stars if it was an option. After nearly $500.00, sticking us in a treatment room for nearly two hours with a very stressed, dehydrated dog while IGNORING our request for water or a cup/bowl for water for him and repeatedly scaring us with statements suggesting "cancer" we were sent on our way with zero treatment plan for the extremely enlarged lymph nodes, loss of appetite, cough/gag, and inordinately small bowel movements. The recommendation was to reduce the Calcium in his diet. Not kidding! The management negligently went out of their way to protect veterinary non-feasance, misfeasance, and quite possibly "malpractice". I provided management every opportunity to resolve the deeply troubling issues amicably. Instead, they notified me that I could schedule (and pay for) a whole new visit with another vet at a future date, in spite of the fact that a timely diagnosis is often the difference between life and death with pets. When I declined, they sent an email notifying me that, henceforth, they would refuse to provide additional services to any of my pets. Burying their heads in the sand will not protect them. I have conferred with the Director of the NM Board of Veterinary Medicine, Mr. William Duran, at NMBVM.org. We discussed the process of Formal Complaint against both the "vet", who should not have had her training wheels removed, and the Licensing Manager of the practice. To those who have had similarly bad experiences with this practice, you may wish to reach out to Mr. Duran (505) 553-7021 to also file a complaint. That is how awful 'vets' get their licenses revoked. To those who are considering taking their furry, four-legged family to this place ... you have been forewarned! read more

Dirty, overpriced, and unknowledgeable We took our dog for an annual cleaning. We were surprised that he supposedly had 5 abscessed teeth that they removed. Worst of all, his paws were crusted with feces when we picked him up. It was disgusting and made us so distressed to think what conditions they exposed him to. Two days after the surgery he was shivering despite the house being warm. We took him back, they seemed nonchalant about the fact that he had a fever two days after surgery (and being exposed to filthy conditions, licking who knows what). They said they could send us home with an anti-nausea and appetite stimulant, or if we wanted more peace of mind, they could give him a $350 blood test. Since neither of those meds would address a fever, we asked them to do the blood test. Unsurprisingly , he had an infection. They tried to charge us a fee for the visit "for taking a slot" despite us having $600 worth of other charges for this visit alone. This happened on a Saturday, and they sent us home without the blood work even though they were clear that things might keep getting worse and we might need to seek emergency care. Unfortunately that is what happened, and the emergency vet couldn't believe that they hadn't provided us the blood work given the circumstances. I spoke about all of this with the practice manager, Ashley and she was pretty flippant about and and seemed to not believe me about the feces on the paws. She promised me she would be consulting with the medical director and would follow up, but she never did and never returned my calls. They lost a patient of more than two years. Looking forward to going to a place where you actually know which vet will be providing care, and tremendously regret ever taking my pets here. If you love your pets, do not put them at risk by taking them here. I would drive to Denver before putting him back in their dirty, uncaring hands. I'm filing a report with the state licensing board because I truly believe this practice represents a threat to the pets of our community. read more

UPDATE (5/26/22): The Leptospirosis vaccine my German Shepherd, Stella, received on the date of my original post requires a booster three weeks after the initial vaccine. I was informed today that, as direct result of the review below, Bernalillo Pet Care Center would not perform the booster shot scheduled for today, and that my pets are no longer allowed to receive medical treatment at their office. I called four other vets in the area about getting the booster shot for Stella. They all stated that they don't recommend the Leptospirosis vaccine and don't even offer it at their offices as it's unnecessary for pets in this region. Clearly, I was upsold one final time by Bernalillo Pet Care for a vaccine my dog didn't need. ORIGINAL POST (5/5/22): I have been taking my two dogs to Bernalillo Pet Care for nearly a decade. Today I took both of them in to get their vaccinations and was informed that, even though I had made two separate, consecutive appointments, I would have to pay an extra charge in order to have the second dog seen, as their "appointment windows are smaller now." Couple that with the high-pressure upselling tactics and, at best, a lack of organization (multiple other animals were loose in the entryway and lobby), and I'm sad to say I will not return to Bernalillo Pet care. What was once a great local veterinary office is now a mere shadow of its former self, seemingly focused simply generating as much revenue as possible and no longer on the care of our community's pets. read more

Didn't even get to take my pet in. Called in on a Thursday afternoon that my pet maybe seizing (so I would consider that an emergency) was told call around and see if I could get her in somewhere else. Well this place is where I HAD been taking my pets for sometime. And no other place had room for her. Called back and the nice lady (totally being sarcastic) told me to call be in the morning for a walk in appointment. Fast forward, waited till 8am to call to go in as a walk in. Same lovely lady answered and said " Umm.. the soonest I could MAYBE see her as a "walk in" would be on Monday, ok?" Not how is your pet? Or bring her right in to make sure she is at least stable! NOTHING! Website states that each case is taken by the severity of the situation. Definitely not the case. read more

We finally cut ties with this place after several years. I took my cat in who was limping and the vet said she had a blood clot and recommended that she be euthanized right there on the spot. I teared up and couldn't do it, so she right away laid out some plans for x rays , tests etc that went near $1,000. Finally I agreed to give her the pain injection (which was $75) along with nausea medicine. That was several weeks ago and she still is sitting in my lap purring each night at sunset. No one knows how much time she has left but I'm sure glad I didn't take the Vets advice. There always is very long waits and they seem to be all about high fees. read more

if your pet has a real problem don't go here! They charge an emergency or same day appointment of $80 for just seeing your pet, not including any other charges! Took my puppy here to get his puppy vaccinations. Everything was fine until my last visit for his final vaccine. The vet tech mentioned that he may be of age to receive his rabies vaccination if he had his adult teeth in. I explained to her that he still had his baby teeth and that I preferred to get his rabies shot on his next visit. She then sent in her manager, she refused to allow me to only get his final puppy shot. When I questioned why I wasn't informed of this during my visit before she explained that it's normal not to be informed. Next she gave me a ultimatum , get his rabies today and push back his final puppy vaccine for 2 weeks which would throw him off schedule and have to get another extra vaccine! I called around to other vets to see if this was a normal practice, I was told that they leave it up to the owner's preference ,because some owners prefer to separate them to monitor possible reactions. Imagine that?! Needless to say I will not be returning to a business that doesn't respect the pet owner decisions involving the care of THIER pet. Especially over something as simple as a vaccine. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone. I took my dog whiskey in for his appointment to get his ear checked and he is a very happy energetic dog. So he needs to be sedated. He was heavily sedated on Wednesday morning for his procedure. He was scared and drugged up on sedation medication they have provided me with. They came and got whiskey and took him to the back as soon as he goes to the back me and my fiancé hear yelling and a Big Bang. They bring whiskey back into the room and said they could not do the procedure because he was being aggressive. A dog that is in a place with strangers, heavily drugged, and getting yelled at is going to get defensive. I noticed when he came back into the room and he was bleeding and had cuts on his chin and upper lip, his nail was also hanging off of his paw. I asked the nurse where those cuts and his bent nail hanging off came from and she said it was from the muzzle. The muzzle was cloth there's no way a cloth mussel did that. And I wanted to see if they could fix his nail because that was hanging off because he looked in pain and scared and the nurse said it will be fix Friday. Keep in mind it was Wednesday morning. So they wanted to not address the nail and the cuts on his lip that Wednesday morning. And the receptionist told me " I don't know how your dog is at home but he's a very aggressive dog" for someone to tell me that got me so mad he was only aggressive because he was with strangers who were yelling at him and he was drugged he got scared and went into defensive mode. The manager did not care to hear my concern about her workers treating my dog with that. Instead of fixing the problem she sided with her co workers and told me her clinic is cutting ties with me.. I will never take my dog or recommend another dog going to this plac read more

I came in to get my cat examined as she was not eating or drinking water. I took her in to get examined and the total came out to 700$. They told me that everything looked good and that there wasn't anything to worry about other than her blood levels being a little low and that she might have arthritis as well as a gum disease. She also said they felt small masses in her stomach an a little bit of fluid build up as well as an inflamed heart. They gave her a shot to rehydrate her and sent me home with nausea medicine and a appetite stimulant taken orally in hopes of getting her to eat. This however, averted her to eating even more and she refused anything after giving her that medicine. I took her back a couple of days later only to see a different veterinarian when they recommended I see the same one for this particular case. This specific veterinarian gave her prescription food along with steroids and said she had IBS and that eating that food should do the trick. I didn't understand as they couldn't get it through their head she was NOT eating. No matter what I gave her she didn't want it. This costed another 700$. Defeated, I took her home again just to find none of this worked either as I expected. I took her in one last time because at this point her nose was bone dry and her body was nothing but bone. They sent me home with steroids and an antibiotic that I had to feed to her by mouth. Once again they recommended I put it in her food disregarding the fact that she was not eating. This caused me to force feed her the pills and it made her extremely uncomfortable and sick. They also recommended I made an appointment for an ultrasound. This last visit costed me another 600$. Not only did they take all of this money, they came back telling me nothing was wrong with my cat and they couldn't see anything of worry. Knowing this wasn't right I contacted a different veterinary clinic called Coralles Veterinary Clinic. They gladly took my cat in to get examined for only 70$ and used the papers I had already received from Bernalillo clinic. Within an hour they told me that my cat has had cancer for awhile now and that some of the vitals on the papers I gave them didn't make sense such as the blood being so low. They said if we would've caught it sooner we could've done something to help but since I wasted my time and money at this specific clinic there was nothing we could do for my cat other than give her a steroid which was a shot and an appetite stimulant that went on topically in her ear. She reacted well to this treatment. But, about a week later she reverted back to her same state. We had to put my cat down because there was nothing more we could do for her. I had already spent over 2,000$ on a clinic just to tell me nothing is wrong and later find out she has cancer. If I would've just went to corrales in the first place I think we could've at least made her last days of living a little bit more peaceful. Rest in peace my kitty kitty. Please do not bring your pet here, a drive to Albuquerque is worth it to get much less expensive quality care for your pet, I have brought two animals here since 2017 and they were terrible experiences. They will charge you 400-500 just to figure out what's wrong(if they even figure it out, last time they said we had to bring the dog back the next day so we could pay for another X-ray), recommend thousands of dollars worth of procedures and if you can't afford it they'll recommend you put the animal down. The first animal we took we didn't want them to suffer so we listened to them but the second animal we took, she didn't even seem that sick so we took her home and she was fine, just a little nauseous from eating some cat food. I complained and requested a refund and they told me our memory of what happened was wrong and that they didn't make it seem like our dog was dying and that we probably should've had pet insurance. Terrible experience. read more
