Absolutely horrible company to deal with. Terrible service, horrible rules, horrible service. Absolute nightmare to deal with.

I am not even a customer of Berkeley Electric. I get pruning and making sure trees don't fall on top of the lines for extremely obvious reasons. However these scum bags cut 2 100 year old tree down in my front yard. Left the stumps 6-10 inches above ground and literally cut one of them up and left it in my front yard a week and a half before Christmas.. My first Christmas in my very first house. Thanks for the special memories assholes. They cut the one tree into pieces that weigh 50-100lbs (i weighed a few) and left. SCUM BAGS!!!! So some 60 year old lady is supposed to carry them to the bag yard or pay somebody to get rid of YOUR MESS! I called and asked to have somebody call me back...They called me back a week later... at 6:45 in the morning. Terrible electric provider. When i first moved out into their service area i was excited, thought great a co-op! Heard about the occasional refund and the yearly give aways, nope they cut those out. They are slightly cheaper than the other providers thats why i gave 2 stars. But to anyone about to move into their area be forewarned you will lose power A LOT! Not exaggerating a lot, so much so they had to have a yearly meeting to give excuses as to why the power goes out so much. I lived in another providers area for 20 years and in the 7 years i have been in BEC area we have lost power, no exaggeration, twice as much. We lose power if the wind blows to hard. We have come to expect power loss if there is a storm coming. And we live in a brand new neighborhood! Get it together BEC! read more

They started charging a "Service Availability Charge" .99 cents a day just to have power. They will charge you almost $30.00 a month before they charge you for usage. Now it does not matter how much I try to save by cutting off and unplugging items I am already in the hole for 30 bucks. Greed, Greed, Greed!!!!! If I use just $15.00 of power a month I am charged $45.00. Insane!!!! The more power you use, the cheaper it become??? No more unplugging and scrimping this summer I will hang meat in my living room because the more I use the cheaper the overhead. read more

Be careful putting too much faith in this company to care for your elderly loved ones. They cut off the service to my elderly mother's house even after I called them and offered to pay the outstanding balance in full over the phone with my credit card. They said that I could not pay the bill since I was not listed on the account and they have to respect the privacy of their customers. I suggested that they should contact my mother to ensure she was aware that here service was going to be disconnected, but they said they were too busy to do that. Heartless for sure...mom was without power for 3 days as a result. read more

This company is probably the most money hungry cooperative ever. I have their pay as you go plan. It is 11$ a day just to have electricity. Did have the 350 dollar to pay their deposit. I have lived in a lot of places and never paid more than 200 dollars a month and that was in the winter. Now I'm paying 350 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment. I cut everything of when I leave for work and I work 6 days a week 7:30 am to 7pm. When I get home I have a energy * a/c window unit. Its in my bedroom. And I don't leave that room. Cause the rest of the apartment is too hot. Well I guess they will keep on robbing me until my lease is up and will move far away so I don't have to pay these outlandish prices. Thank god I don't cook it would brake me if I used the stove. And thank god for my mom she let's me wash clothes at her house. Her electric run 150. But she has SCE&g. I have a washer and dryer but I unplugged both cause when I called the company they told me I could save money unplugging them cause they draw power even if their not on. If your looking to live some where here in the Charleston area I would make sure your no where near Berkeley coops jurisdiction. Unless your rich. read more
