This place is open April - September. Recently went on a loop hike from Gimmelwald to Obersteinberg to Stechelberg and back to Gimmelwald. On our way we came across Berggasthaus Obersteinberg. This review is in regards to the restaurant, as I didn't stay here. I am happy to see though that I am not the first to review this place. The best feature of this place is it's location. This place has an amazing view over what I called the valley of many waterfalls. There is nothing but beauty to behold from the terrace of this establishment. You can hear the roaring river at the bottom of the valley and and the many cascading waterfalls.
This place has no electricity and all the supplies are carried up by mule. Their is a lady with a dairy within a few steps that makes the alp cheese that you can order to eat from the restaurant here. Their are dormitories or individual guestrooms that you can book. There are two separate buildings with guest rooms available, In the main building you will also find a restaurant. The bathroom and washroom are located in a separate building. If you stay here you utilise candle light or a gas lamp to find your way, and you would need to walk outside for the facilities. I happened to look into the rooms in passing and they looked simple, but perfectly clean, no complaints.
The restaurant has a simple menu of hot and cold items. We saw many people ordering the rosti which smelled amazing, but as it was a hot day and we had further to hike we didn't want a heavy meal so we ordered some sandwiches and fruit tart. We had to get the fruit tart as previous hikers we encountered before stopping told us about the fruit tart and we couldn't pass it up. It was a good thing we ordered it in advance as she only had one slice left at 2:30pm. Definitely a local favourite! The sandwiches were probably the best I have had in awhile, made VERY fresh and with all local products. The bread was phenomenal hand made, and the cheese was the local cheese made by the local dairy lady. The fruit tart was out of this world. I am sure the other dishes are just as good. When we were there it appeared that there was only one elderly lady running the entire place. You would see her taking orders then be gone for awhile to get the food and back out again. So service was definitely not quick, as you had many on a nice weekend, and only one person, but it was service with a smile.
What a fantastic find!
TIP: If you are thirsty and with another person or group get the pitcher of ice tea, or order the large size of Rivella or your soda choice, as it is cheaper to get the larger bottle and share, vs the individual size.
Also, this place does not take card, it only accepts cash. read more
