AMAZING!!! If you are in the surrounding towns this is a must! It's a set menu but such a fantastic experience. The night we went was raclette but my fiancé has been when it was fondue and says it was amazing as well. The family that runs it is so so sweet and welcoming. The environment is very homey and warm. The owner of this restaurant was so rude to my fiancee and I that I still can't believe it. It was a bizarre, horrible experience. My fiancee called in the morning and made a 7pm reservation for us. We then proceeded on a day long hike. He ended up proposing to me on the trail. Because of the distance of the hike and the excitement of the proposal, we realized we'd be about 15 minutes late to dinner. So, he called and asked if it was ok that we would be late. The owner advised him that it was fine, she would make it work. We got there and one of the servers sat us and brought us drinks. Everything was fine until the owner came out. She was short with us, terse, and clearly irritated. She slammed two dinner plates in front of us, both meatball dishes. I told her that I'm a vegetarian and that we had ordered a fondue for me over the phone. She grabbed the meatball dish away from me and huffed off without saying anything. She returned shortly after and slammed some sort of stuffed red pepper dish in front of me. She said, "There. That's vegetarian. Are you going to eat it? If not, I'll take it away." I was shocked, mentally exhausted from the hike, and didn't know what to say. She turned to my fiancee and said, "Maybe I didn't explain well enough over the phone how important it is to be on time." She then huffed off again. We debated what to do, wanting to just leave, but we decided to eat and ask for the check since we had hiked for almost 11 hours, were very hungry, and were unfamiliar with the area and unsure where else to go for dinner. The food was bland and overpriced. There wasn't much food on our plates and what was there was mediocre at best. I asked one of the servers for the check and told her about our experience. She told me that the woman who had mistreated us was the owner and apologized for her behavior. Some parting words to the owner: If it is so imperative to you that all your patrons be on time, then when someone calls to ask if it's ok to be late, simply say you can't accommodate late guests. We would have been happy (and much better off) to go elsewhere. Throwing a fit like a toddler and expressing your frustration to your guests in such an unprofessional way is always unacceptable but all the more so when you're overcharging people for bland food. Guests paying those prices should be treated well. In our case, we had just gotten engaged and deserved to enjoy a nice dinner after but instead were scolded by you. Your behavior was bizarre and completely inappropriate. Whenever I remember this experience, I am embarrassed for you. You should be ashamed for throwing a fit like that in front of patrons at your own business establishment. read more

My wife found this B&B through an episode of rick steeves, which is the last I'll say about that. We watched during the plague and just sort of dreamed about going here. So, when we thought about our honeymoon, this was the top of our list. Anyway, it's the perfect quaint hotel/B&B, with probably one of the best views in the world. The staff here are just gems of humanity, and could not be more welcoming, especially their son who was more than happy to sit with us, draw, and talk about gentlemen hats. We stayed two nights, and you really can't do any better with the location; we walked to the neighboring town, and also took the gondala up and down several times to see the neighboring towns. But, the real star here is the food, the beer and the hospitality. I was unaware that they brewed their own beer, a #1 on tapper, and it was some of the best beer we've ever had. We sat for hours on the outside beer garden/patio, both alone and in conversation with the owner, and just made for a real magical experience for us. The breakfast in the morning was lovely, very Swiss and very fresh; the veg was from the garden, and the coffee was killer. Fresh bread to die for, and we even sampled some vegan cheese. Anyway, if you are looking for a place to stay for a few days, on or off season, with just some of the nicest people you can imagine, stay here. This review is for a beer and snacks we had at the Pension. It was a 5-star beer, on a 5-star day, on the deck with a 5-star view. Staff was accomodating and the snacks were good. It's a cute old-fashioned place and I suspect is a wonderful place to stay overnight. From Gimmelwald, up the hill is Mürren and down the hill is Lauterbrunnen. Gimmelwald felt like stepping into a dream. Everywhere you looked was grand and breathtaking. When we arrived at the restaurant, only two tables were occupied in the spacious interior, which had many empty tables. One table had four people, and the other was occupied by a couple, all of whom were non-Asians. We asked an older female waitress for a seat, but she told us she was only seating parties of three or more because they were busy. When I pointed out a table with only two people, she dismissed us. That was the only interaction we had with her. We then decided to try the balcony area, which had a separate entrance and different waitstaff, hoping there would be an available seat. And we saw only one table was occupied. A male waiter greeted us kindly, inviting us to choose a table while holding the menu. However, the same female waitress who had refused us inside saw us about to sit, walked over to the male waiter, and whispered something to him. Suddenly, he apologized and said they had a long list of reservations for the rest of the night and could not serve us. Anyway, since the restaurant was next to where we were staying, we walked by it several times while exploring the tiny village that night. At no point did the restaurant seem full, and we noticed a few non-Asian couples being seated. Without saying, it was extremely disappointing for my child who is Black/ Asian to experience this refusal of service for a reason we could only assume, one that felt sadly obvious even to a child. Fortunately, my teenager wisely suggested that we focus on enjoying ourselves and not let the incident ruin our trip, so we tried to do just that. But it was hard to shake off the lingering disappointment especially we traveled across the globe to experience the magical place. Therefore, I felt compelled to share my experience so that others won't go through the same. We must treat each other with kindness and respect. In the meanwhile, I assume/ hope our experience does not represent this establishment as a whole and the little that we saw, other staff seemed nice and were enjoying what they do. read more

Cannot best the views...and a great beer selection. Tucked away in peaceful Gimmelwald, this beer garden is a wonderful place to stop for a while. The views are unparalleled, with a beautiful view of the valley and mountains. Reasonably priced, quick service, and that view make this unforgettable and a must do! read more

We happened to pass by here on our hike here, and I'm glad we stopped by. We ordered the cold platter, soup, apple cider, and their world famous beer. We were here in March which was wonderful as it is not the busy season, but with that this is the only open restaurant in town and it has limited options in terms of food. We came here for a couple of beers after a long hike and to check out the dinner menu. They had one beer on tap and wine and hard alcohol. We took our drinks outside and soaked up the view! We returned for dinner and it was very cozy! Our options were chicken pot pie or pasta. We had the pot pie which came with a delicious French onion soup. The food was good and the service was good. There were some better food options in the next town, Murren, but if you feel like staying in Gimmelwald, this is a great option! read more

Pension Gimmelwald has everything you could ever hope for in a restaurant - incredible food and pricing (you can order a backpackers special hot meal for 10CHF from 6-7pm) and the ambience and service are phenomenal as well. The inside is warm and cozy or you can sit on the back deck to enjoy an absolutely stunning view of the Alps. Even after eating there three days in a row we are purposely staying to eat lunch after we checked out of our hotel. Try the potato salad, the chicken sandwich, soups, and definitely the backpacker special! read more

This pension is my home away from home. My friends and I literally ran into this place one extremely rainy day during our weekend hiking trip. We were soaked through and needed a warm place to rest and hungry stomachs to fill. Pension Gimmelwald is a typical old Swiss wooden mountain inn. It offers places to sleep, a wonderful restaurant, and honesty shop. They also have a selection of games and books to choose from and great sofa's to relax on. The food is all locally grown, and the meat is from local butchers. Everything is delicious and fresh. We fell in love with the place, and wished we didn't have to leave. We promised to return in the summer time and stay for a weekend, which is exactly what we did. The rooms are clean, the breakfast is delicious, and the service is great. You have a shared common bathroom and shower. It is just a couple of rooms of different sizes. They even have a room with six beds that you can book for a group of friends and if you bring your sleeping bag the rooms are only around 25 CHF. The breakfast is extra, but worth every penny. I think the best part are the people. I don't think it would be same without the couple that run this place. They are amazing and very friendly. My husband and I have always wanted to own a cabin, and this place feels like our cabin, but with a personal chef included. We learned later that this place was well known amongst the Rick Steve fanatics in the US. I guess he has written about this place, especially about the honesty shop, in which you can always find something different. IT is antique specialties from the area, with a suggested price, and a box for you to drop your money in for any items you pick up. Very cool. The pension during the summer also has a great area outside where you can sit and enjoy the amazing view. I am about to call and book a winter trip with friends for the end of January. It will be beautiful in the snow! The pension stands at 4500ft (1350m) and can only be reached from the valley by cable car (the pension is just two minutes walking distance from the cable car station). read more

My wife and I just spent two weeks in Switzerland and ate dinner here twice. They have a fixed menu which changes each night, and they can tell you what they will be serving when you make a reservation. Both meals we had were fantastic and reasonably priced, as far as Switzerland goes. If you have a drink at the bar, the staff is all very nice and pleasant to talk to. If/when we return to Switzerland we will definitely pay another visit. read more

Okay. Alright. Yes, yes, yes! We didn't make it ALL the way to the top of the Schilthorn. But if you think that made the Feldschlossen taste any less amazing, you're daffy. The stunning view from the table on the deck facing Gspaltenhorn is enough to make your day, especially on a mostly sunny day like we had. Does lager in Gimmelwald taste better than an IPA in Beervana? Tell ya what ... you get on over to Gimmelwald, take a hike, and report back. I'll bet the lager at 4500' above sea level in the Berner Oberland will suit ya just fine. read more

This hotel is really an expensive hostel and is a total rip-off. There's a reason they have a 10 day cancellation policy and minimum 2 night stay - once your there you are stuck paying. We booked for 3 nights and left after 1. The sheets are gross, old and worn with bumps, towels thin and worn out, walls paper thin, ceilings are within inches of your head. Place is dark, with few windows and has a dank smell and threadbare carpets throughout. The mirror in our bathroom fell down when we closed the door. If you choose to eat there you have no choices and must take whatever they serve. Highly recommend you stay in Murren instead with wonderful hotels and restaurants. read more
