The ambiance and intimacy of this farm-to-table French restaurant is cozy chic with flavor bursting in every bite. The service was incredible and I think they stayed open for longer because the conversation my table was having was so dialed in, we didn't realize the time that flew by. The staff were so kind and thoughtful. The butter dish is a pleasant surprise, the escargot was a little saltier than I anticipated but reminded me my summer trip in Paris last year. The steak dish was mouth watering and the salmon was solid but not the best I've ever had. I'd rate this as a solid restaurant, especially if you miss France (I did). I would give this 4.6 stars rounding to 5. It's not my top 20 restaurants of all time, but definitely top in Oregon. PS: the creme brulee was very fun, get it!! read more

Where to begin.... We had a reservation at 8pm, we arrived on time and were told the table wasn't ready yet. Not a big deal, until we had to ask them to seat us after they chose to sit a party that arrived after us, and our table was sitting empty. First impression, not great service so far. We ordered the Compound butter and baguette. This dish was excellent, but again the service was so poor, it took 30 minutes to make it to our table. We then ordered our entrees, about 45 minutes later (total time at the restaurant was 11/2 hours) our food did not come, however the table that was sat at the exact same time, received food for their entire part of four, and had moved on to dessert. We decided to say something. The restaurant staff chose to blame it on a "printer issue" in the kitchen, (because apparently checking on your tables and know what is going on in this restaurant is not a priority). Personal feelings and thoughts is that they didn't put the order in at all. We told them we would just take the check and eat somewhere else, at this point they comped the food but only gave it to us to go, didn't even give us the option to eat at the restaurant. Now we had to wait another 20 minutes home just to eat. However, as an establishment that thrives on positive community review, the entire bill should have been comped IMO. Once back to our home, the food was dry and not worth even waiting for, the Lamb was hardly palatable. The pork chop was fine, but nothing to write home about. Needless to say, if you're looking for subpar French cuisine and terrible service this is the place, otherwise I'd go for something else, like l'orange or another French restaurant in the area. read more

I went for the first time for Portland Dining Month. I usually stay away from French food because its richness doesn't agree with me, but here they take the subtleties of French food but integrate them into something more approachable. The 3-course menu started with a robust beet and goat cheese salad. It was perfectly dressed with a well-balanced vinaigrette. Next was a beautiful dish of coq a vin, and finally a Cara Cara orange parfait. All the food was delicious, and the servings were surprisingly large. No tiny, delicate plates here! I did not leave hungry. Service was attentive, although I wish I'd asked for cracked pepper on my salad, since salt and pepper aren't available on the table. I am a big eater and have spent time in SW France. I was ready to enjoy the cassoulet which is the regional dish's I so enjoyed in Toulouse and Auch. However I was unable to finish the cassoulet because it was so salty. As a member of the clean plate club, this was very sad. I did appreciate being greeted by name when we arrived. The service was attentive. I did enjoy the pate appetizer which had that hit of Armagnac or brandy, yum. However, the bread for which we were charged extra had no crust! This was a shocker. This was a wonderful splurge. Between the three of us, we had the Pork Belly, Escargot, Cassoulet, Poisson, Coq au Vin, GF bread, Crème Brûlée, and Sorbet. I can't have gluten and dairy so I had the Pork Belly appetizer and Poisson with potatoes instead of rice (which was prepared with either gluten or dairy, I can't remember). My daughter had the Coq au Vin, and we had them put the butter on the side, so I could try it. IMO, the flavor of the Coq au Vin surpassed the Poisson. However, the sockeye salmon they used in the Poisson was superb, and sat up from the sauce, on the mushrooms and potatoes. I couldn't try my husband's Cassoulet, but he said it was delicious. They also quite enjoyed their escargot and Crème Brûlée. The GF bread that you can ask for (I recommend asking for it when you order the appetizers) was delicious and soft! I put my pork belly on it and wow, so good. We are looking forward to going back one day! read more

We had several dishes, our favorite by far was the manilla clams appetizer, but the cassoulet was a close second. The waitress was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant had a warm cozy vibe that made me feel like I was at a friend's house for dinner. A few things I would share for future- escargot is dry and a little overcooked. The wonderful experience with escargot is the butter and garlic and parsley and dipping bread in after. But unfortunately I have yet to have this experience with theirs . Hopefully that changes! Recently had the risotto and was a little bummed to find it was bland, lacked any white wine tangy taste. For a while I have been wanting French food. I did some real digging online to get real, honest reviews of restaurants. It was also important that the place had two things: escargot (traditional preparation, nothing overly fancy) and duck. Since we went for my birthday (actually today) it was my choice, but he was tempted by the lamb description available in the online menu. First, it's a small place. Very comfy and quaint. It had the perfect atmosphere. It is winter and just after the new year, so it wasn't busy. Such a small space must be hustling come Valentine's Day or better weather. They had a small outdoor seating area, which wasn't open on a rainy and cold day, but seemed a nice option for summer. We ordered cocktails- both were lovely. Pear brandy spritzer and a Roosevelt. The escargot were everything I wanted them to be and more!!! Truly delicious, as was the amply-supplied bread. My partner went back to double-check we did not miss one, he liked it so much. Dinner was tasty. He ate lamb, which I do not eat. He said it was well flavored and tender. I got the duck confit. It was falling off the bone with a very crisp skin- truly perfection in terms of cooking. I was unsure about a berry jus, but it was a good complement for a gamey type of meat, such as duck. The greens were also tasty! Though super full, too full to finish my duck, we had to get dessert. The cinnamon ice cream with nut crumble, caramel and poached pears was ok. I loved the caramel, which was the last thing I expected to love. I had really wanted the lemon tart they had online, being a serious lemon lover, but alas they only had a berry tart and I wasn't feeling it. My partner said the pot au chocolate was tasty- he said the berry coulis helped cut the rich, sweetness of the crème. The server was wonderful. She was clearly knowledgable and comfortable in the space and with the food. She's someone I'd have trusted with recommendations, had I not already known what I wanted. She definitely helped make it an excellent experience! I do hope she plants a seed to include garlicky mussels with fries, one of my favorite dishes- very popular about a decade ago. So tasty! I'd highly recommend Bergerac to anyone looking for French food in the PDX area. read more

We left very full, and excited to come back to try more dishes. They have a decent selection of drinks as well- there were several tasty sounding cocktails I'll return to try, but on our visit I was pregnant and enjoyed a tasty shrub. They have indoor and outdoor dining, and we were quickly seated at a patio seat with a reservation, and service was very friendly. Highly recommend stopping here for dinner. read more

We ordered a bunch of apps clams, escargots and pear salad - all were cooked to perfection and had a great presentation. My wife loved the escargot . We ordered three different entrées. We tried the fillet, the lamb and the duck - again everything was amazing. We especially enjoyed the fillet as the peppercorn sauce with mushrooms what to die for, followed by the lamb and then the duck. We also had some wonderful desserts, their cream Brulé was decadent and chocolate birthday dish for our guest was yummy. So many places have really stupidly expensive wine lists that don't correspond to their menu items. Bergerac's wine list was very well priced. The service was also wonderful. Came here with my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We wanted to eat French food (french people here :)), I found Bergerac through Yelp and...we were not disappointed. The food was excellent : we got the pâté maison (chicken liver mousse + pâté de campagne) as an appetizer, then my husband choose the braised lamb and I got the confit de canard and both entrees were so great, very flavorful with lot of different texture. For the dessert, we had the choux praliné, it was not too sweet, just perfect. The service was great, our waitress was wonderful, she makes sure everything was okay during the whole meal. Our dinner was $400, and we were really excited to try everything on the menu. We were happy to pay for a fancy meal but felt like for that price we should have been blown away and we weren't. I decided to treat myself with dinner and a night at the symphony, and Bergerac definitely delivered on the treats! I'm so glad I decided to stretch my budget to try this restaurant. For $65 my meal came with an amuse-buche, appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Frankly, I rolled myself out of the restaurant by the time I was done. The clam appetizer was especially delicious; I sopped up all of the broth I could with bread, letting none go to waste. I was quite surprised that I was the ONLY guest in this restaurant for the entirety of my meal. This is a fantastic option for a date, anniversary, or Mother's Day. If dining with a partner, I would suggest getting two $50 meals: one appetizer + entrée, and the second an entrée + dessert, and share. read more

I made a reservation here for my partner's birthday. The experience from start to end was excellent and the staff was really attentive. They'd read the notes about us being pork-free and knew we were celebrating a birthday. I've add this info to reservations at other places and never seen them acknowledged, so it was definitely appreciated and our server had alternate options for us. The outside tent was set up nicely. They had blankets for us and our own individual space heater. It seems minor, but the star of the whole evening was the rouille served with the seafood chowder. We had the braised lamb and duck confit for our entrées. Both were good, but I always wish there were more side vegetables. The choux dessert was seasonal and the hazelnut cream filling went perfectly with the cinnamon apples. read more

We had Anniversary plans for dinner at another place you wait months to get into. Unfortunately it had to close at the last minute for the evening due to staff being sick. This was honestly the best thing that ever could have happened to us as in a mad scramble we discovered and were able to grab a spot at the delightful Bergerac Bistro. You walk in and the place, with its warm ambient lighting and relaxed atmosphere, feels less like a formal restaurant you'd come to expect with food at this level and more like a table right outside a friend's kitchen--a friend who just happens to be an award--winning chef. The food is French comfort but the feeling I had while eating it was sheer excited bliss. It began with the mantilla clams in white wine that was so good to have bread to soak up the au Jus. But it wasn't enough. I requested a spoon. It moved on to a tender duck confit with fingerling potatoes that was melt in your mouth good with hints of red wine and raspberries. Then ended with a creme brûlée with a perfectly flaky crust and hints of lemon. Good food makes you smile. This dinner made us smile all the way home. I'm only familiar with one area of the menu, so this review may not be as complete as some, but that area was... stellar. A friend told me that the escargot here were world-class. I'm a lifelong fan of the little gastropods, so I headed over with another friend, and we had an appetizer platter and a dozen escargot each. It was true; these snails were among the most succulent I've ever had. All too often you find escargot that are rubbery vehicles for delicious sauce. But these were the snail equivalent of foie gras. And they had the perfect razor-crisp white wine to accompany them. I think it was a Picpoul de Pinet. There are lots of other reviews on here to fill you in on the rest of the menu. I'm just saying, if you go and you are at all a fan of escargot, you gotta get 'em. And if you've never had them before, these would be the ones to try! read more
