I left Stevie's leash at my in-laws. 24 miles away. I needed a replacement fast but could not lose my parking spot. Walked to Jewel. Nothing. Walked to CVS. Nothing. Thank goodness, Bentley's was at the end of the block. This little pet supply store has a little bit of everything. I was actually drawn to one of the backpacks. The leash I sound was perfect with Bentley's branding on it. The person working there was very nice and relaxed. And on a warm day like today, I definitely appreciated the cool AC! We've always had a great experience with Bentley's, especially this location! The employees always greet me with a smile and my dog with a treat. This location is perfect for this part of town, where it seems like just about everyone has a furry friend with them! The space is MUCH smaller than your average pet supply shop, but it somehow always still has exactly what we need. It is also always clean and well organized, which I really appreciate. One of my favorite aspects of Bentley's is that they carry smaller dog food brands. I explained my dogs stomach issues to the staff working and they hooked us up with a winner (Fromms) on the first go. We also come here for treats, toys, and accessories. We got the most adorable plaid sweater for him here a few years ago that is still in great condition and a favorite for fall weather. I only knock it a star because the prices are very steep. $15 for a bully stick for my dog, but I still come back time & time again. I am a longtime customer of your grand operations, first beginning with the LaSalle location, now shopping between Desplaines and Wells. THE REASON for my allegiance to Bentley's is J.R. I know not his last name, but I know a beautiful human and employee when I see one. And J.R. is la crème de la crème! He represents Bentley's as though he is the owner. I watch the manner in which he interacts with customers, with dogs, and with fellow employees. He is phenomenal. It all began almost four years ago when my dear dog Gwendolyn needed four 32-ounce goat milks weekly to comply with her holistic health plan to manage cancer. J.R. worked above and beyond to ensure fulfillment of my orders. And my little Gwendolyn loved to scream at him for treats, interrupting other customers to do so; and J.R. handled this very demanding little dog with sophistication and love, all whilst properly tending to the customers who were first in queue! I had not seen J.R. in quite some time (so happy that Chetara came into our lives during J.R.'s work at your other stores). And then one day recently, it was like magic! He had returned and remembered everything about my Gwendolyn. Sadly she had gone to heaven in April, and he replied, "I am so sorry. She was the bossiest dog in River North." Oh! How he made me so happy to reminisce of my girl. And of course, I am now the mother to Gwendolyn's clone. Her name is Claudette, and when J.R. met her last week, he exclaimed, "Woa! We went to Dog-a-holics today for my fur babies' annual pictures with the Easter Bunny, and, man, do these people have this down to an exact science! Smooth sailing all the way...even with two fidgety dogs. This was the very first time that we went without an appointment. Usually, I try to make sure that I have appointments for Easter Bunny and Santa pictures bu,t since I had been out of town, I hadn't been able to do that this time. We got down to the store, and checked in at the counter. They took our phone number and gave us a red card (red means wait list, and green means appointment) for our turn. They said it would be 15 to 30 minutes. In the meantime, we made our $40 donation to the Chicago Canine Rescue for the pictures, all the while nibbling on delicious cookies from the Southport Grocer. Yum! Yes, the donation amount is $40, but it is going to a good cause. The event is run by the store and volunteers from CCR. It took about 15 minutes for our turn and we went down to the basement where the photographer was set up. She was great. As an animal photographer, Jennifer Whaley from Fetch Portraits, is great with dogs. She can keep them calm and get their attention. Let her do her job and you will have a great experience. Also, as a side note, you can bring your children and then your human children can be in the picture with your furry children. Better than the mall. Promise! Then after the picture, my fur babies got Easter Baskets filled with a rope toy, Stella and Chewy's samples, Zukes samples, and coupons. Even a lollipop for me! Score! Rocko and I usually stop by here for a treat whenever we're on a walk down Southport, since he knows exactly where it is because of the treats outside. I use to frequent this place a lot since it is really close to my house, then I realized how unfriendly the staff there is. I use to just blow it off but I think the most recent time I was there was my last final step into that store. I walked in with my pug and my boyfriend and we were looking to purchase a decent amount of merchandise, we browsed around and tried to get the staff's attention, they decided it was more important to talk to each other or have chats with other people involving nothing that has to do with the store. I finally became so irritated that I told my boyfriend that we just need to leave and go buy our dog stuff at a store that appreciates our business. The pet costume I had been looking for was displayed in the window, so I stopped in. The sales associate asked what size my dog was, and I sheepishly told her it was for my 17lb cat! I thought I would be shunned, but she was friendly and took two sizes out of the packaging so I could compare them. I ended up buying the costume from there. She also showed me a small cat section in the back of the store. It's not advertised, but that might bring in more customers if it were. read more

For the WIN! We got a cute set of Paws rubber boots for Lily for Christmas. They were a gift from Cleveland and juuuuuust a bit too small. After heading to a pet boutique in Lincoln Park that wouldn't exchange an item without a receipt (did they listen to how I got them?) I ended up here. I explained my weird predicament to the lovely sales lady, who was happy to take the unworn small boots for some lovely medium ones! It cost me $1 for the swap, but that's much better than having too-small boots! While I was there, I picked up a HUGE vanilla rawhide for Lily. Seriously, huge. It's taken her 2 days to eat 1/3 of it. In fact, it was so big at first that she dropped it running through a doorway. Hysterical! I'll definitely be back! I absolutely love places with great customer service and I'm sure Lily will eventually get through this huge rawhide! read more

When I was preparing to bring home my pug puppy, I stopped in here to get some things. The staff was super helpful and even helped me find the most economical option for what I was looking for. I got great smelling dog shampoo, treats that are good for training, a little plush toy, and they even had some great Vineyard Vines Mascot collars half off! I even picked up a few hilarious greeting cards that they were selling. I brought my pug back in today and everyone was ooing and ahhing about how cute she was and hooked me up with some bitter apple spray so she stops chewing my furniture. It is a little pricey, but they offered me a 15% off coupon for signing up for their mailing list and a list of recommended vets and dog walking services in the area. This is probably the worst pet store I have been to. Called earlier in the day to check the availability of a particular item. Was told they didn't have the color I was looking for, but I could at least bring the dog in to check sizing before ordering online. Arrived at the store in the afternoon. I'm not sure how long I was there before anyone noticed. No "hello, welcome to Bentley's"...nothing. For the record, we were the only customers so it's not like they were running around and didn't notice us among a large group of people. The two women behind the desk couldn't have cared less about the happenings in the store. When I attempted to ask one of them for help, referencing my call earlier that day, she only replied with "yeah". (Ok, awkward) I asked if they had anymore sizes, she responded with "well, we have these other ones" (clearly way too small for my dog) and didn't offer any other solutions. I was a bit frustrated seeing as I had been told (likely by her) only a few hours earlier that they had a variety and was encouraged to bring the dog in. Long story short: don't waste your time. I try to be generous with customer service but this store really didn't fit the bill. Not to mention they hardly have any selection. read more

My Dog Maverick and I love this place! It always has treats and water outside for dogs, so we make it part of our regular walks. My Dog is a bit of a "puller" and one day I had enough, we went into Bentley's, I looked at the manager Jen and said, "Please Help Me!" We both laughed, she took one look at Maverick and fitted him with a No Pull Harness. It has been completely LIFE CHANGING! She was so patient and kind to us. I cannot resist the urge to buy my Lola every cute thing I see for her. :-) After getting irritated in a pet supply store, my friend suggested I check out Dog-a-holics after I complained about the selection of small dog supplies at Petco & Petsmart. Upon walking in, there were lots of really nice dog owners who had brought their pets in to pick up stuff. The person working was fantastically helpful and kind! This store has lots of great pet items to offer! From NCAA collars & bowls, to treats, matching leashes & collars, and doggy beer! There were even doggy baked goods! They even carry products for dog lovers & lovers of dogs lovers to help reduce/eliminate pet allergens. I would definitely recommend this place, for big dogs, small dogs, and every dog in-between! read more

While admittedly I have not shopped here, yet...This place is one of the classiest stores I know of. I work on Southport. My coworker had a tragic fire and lost 3 of her cats. She still has a cat and a dog. One of her clients came into work recently with a present for her. From Bentley's. She had explained the situation to the store and they, without losing a beat, said they absolutely wanted to help. They donated not only the biggest bag of toys and treats I have ever seen, but also a $200 gift card. Thinking about it honestly still makes me cry. The fact that good people still exist is evident here. They care. And that is why we should all shop here. read more

I like this store a lot, and always take my pooch here for a special treat, but I have two mild complaints. 1. It's definitely a bit pricey. This is a top-notch retailer in the Southport Corridor. The owner (who I consider a local celebrity) and staff are friendly and knowledgeable and express genuine interest in your dog's needs. I almost feel guilty for asking questions and getting answers for free, essentially, but they're quick to provide information so I don't think I'm breaking any taboos or hustling them for free info. Been meaning to write this review for awhile. Last fall, my husband and I ordered an adoptaversary cake for our dog. He was dying from cancer and we knew it would be our last year with him. We wanted to do it up big and right. We were really excited by all the choices for flavors we could get for his cake. On the day of his adoptaversary, the worst possible thing happened. We had to put him to sleep. It was truly the worst day. We called Dogaholics to let them know we would not be in to pick up the cake because our dog passed. I called the store, bawling. Maybe it is too much to expect, but they still charged us for the cake. This just seems to be in poor taste to me. I am also a small business owner. There are times where I discount services or just do not charge clients because it would be tacky to do so. Or because it is just the right thing to do. I would have thought this might have qualified as one of those times with Dogaholics. It just would have been a nice gesture. Not expected, but kind. We now have a new dog in our lives and her birthday was this week. And, of course, we had to get a cake. But because of our past experience with them, we went with a different nearby dog bakery and will from now on. If they would have shown a little sensitivity during our time of sadness, they would have kept a lifelong customer. I am not so convinced that they care so much about pets or their owners. read more

My dogs are my children and deserve to be spoiled rotten. So that's what I do. I used to frequent the Lincoln Park location of this store and haven't ventured to the Southport location until this past weekend and I am so glad I did. They have everything you could possibly want for your fur babies and more. I am obsessed with my pups and this store understands people like me. The selection here is unmatched of any puppy store in the city, and trust me I've been to a ton trying to find new and exciting things to spoil my kids with. The staff was very helpful and friendly. I have a 1 1/2 year old puppy bulldog and he's been coming here since he was just a tiny puppy. I love that I can bring him in and the ladies that work here are always very friendly and you can tell they really care about their doggy customers. They remember Petey every time and recommend new toys and treats that he would enjoy. They introduced him to the Bully Stick and there's no turning back now... My dog Berkley and I love it here -- they always have the cutest toys, cookies, sweaters and collars! Not to mention a street discount for anyone who works on Southport and great deals when you use your Belly card. We also use their grooming services and they do a great job. They have an entire display case of dog cookies which make excellent gifts. There stuff is a little on the pricey side, but that isn't much of a shock in this neighborhood. This is a fantastic pet store. The employees seem to genuinely care about your dogs and are extremely knowledgeable about their products. We came in with our new puppy, and they suggested great food and products/toys to keep our puppy occupied. Although not the closest pet supply store to us, I have made it a habit to stop by at least once a week in order to keep my hyper German Shepherd's treat supply well stocked. This shop has a great selection of treats, and I was impressed by the friendly service... Kelly in particular went above and beyond to help us, and even remembered my dog's name when we stopped by for our second (and third) visit.
