The Art Stop - Painting from Paul Taylor's Saturday class. Keep in mind, I suck, but he walked us through doing that!

I never really noticed this place before, probably because I wasn't painting at the time. I recently took up, watercolor, and brought all my stuff up here, but needed a few extra supplies. During my first visit, I noticed they had a workshop on that upcoming Saturday, and I eagerly signed up for it. It was an all-day workshop with Paul Taylor, and he was an INCREDIBLE instructor. Even though I had taken classes for three months before we left Texas, I learned so much from him in that one day. The class focused on doing one painting from beginning to end, and you would think an seven hour day would be too much for one painting, but it was absolutely perfect. It allowed us to take our time and allowed time for him to explain every move and assist us as we painted. Now about the shop... What a jewel! It is very well stocked, and had almost everything I needed, except for a couple of paint colors. But to top it off, the owner was working the day I visited, and she was so incredibly helpful. She walked around and helped me find everything I needed, and we had a wonderful visit while I was there. I returned again on another day when a young woman was working, and she was equally as helpful and enjoyable. When we come up here next year, I think I'm going to base our visits around the classes they offer. I would love to take the watercolor class that they offer that goes on for several weeks. If you consider yourself even remotely, creative and artistic, skip Hobby Lobby, and Michaels and support this wonderful local establishment.

Great experience here! They even have a summer camp for kids. I believe there's art classes for all ages here too. Wonderful place that offers great art supplies.

I attended two venetian plaster classes prior to attending the classes at Buon Fresco. One was a 5…read moreday class and another a 3 day class. Having taken the three that I did, if I had to only take one, I would 100% choose Buon Fresco. Communication was very excellent and documents were organized in a timely manner. All my questions were answered in a clear and concise manner while organizing our class dates. There was nothing I was uncertain of when I showed up for the first day of class. As for the classes themselves, there are nuances and insights to Victoria's instruction that distinguish her from the rest and let you know you're in the presence of someone who has mastered this craft. Beyond the application of plaster there are courses offered which the other classes ( I attended ) didn't address at all. Most notably among them is the color theory class. The ability to color match and create custom color for clients will infinitely distinguish you from everyone else. Marbling courses are a must for anyone looking to further distinguish themselves and watching Victoria take a blank white board and transform it into a piece of marble is worth the cost of admission alone. Additionally there is a business course offered which contained valuable insights into industry specific best practices. There are also a few additional, more advanced courses, which I didn't have the time to take unfortunately. All that being said, I can't recommend Buon Fresco enough. Highest marks for sure. If you're interested in learning venetian plaster, based on my experiences, this is the school to go to, period.

The courses are structured beautifully and Victoria manages to cover a vast amount knowledge in just a couple of days. If there is anybody out there wanting to learn faux finishes or any other sort of high end finish, Buon Fresco is the way to go!

This was an unexpected gem of an art museum in the heart of Utica. The MWPAI has two main buildings and includes a lovely collection of paintings and sculptures. The highlight of the museum is the set of paintings by Thomas Cole on the top floor of the main building. These works illustrate various stages in one's life cycle from youth to middle-age to older-age. I was impressed by the quality of the collection here and a visiting exhibit of works by a contemporary artist from Atlanta. We arrived around 11:30am on a Thursday and went immediately to the Terrace Cafe after a quick restroom stop. The cafe is open from 11am to 3pm Tuesdays through Saturdays and has outdoor seating. I was impressed by the quality of our bistro-style lunch prepared by a professional chef. We enjoyed some iced tea and the fried deviled eggs with horseradish, dijon and scallions as an appetizer. My 13-year old son devoured his MWP burger (mustard-whiskey-peppercorn glaze), while I had the Saratoga Quiche which was light and refreshing. We were too full for dessert. Who knew that Utica could provide an elegant yet affordable lunch with a lovely outdoor view? Be sure to ask the waiter for recommendations on main dishes and appetizers. Although the service can be a bit slow, it's a delightful spot for a leisurely lunch where you can relax and unwind. My wife, teenage sons (15 yrs, 13 yrs) and I really enjoyed our short day trip to Utica. MWPAI was a highlight along with Utica Coffee Roasters and the half-moon cookies from Hemstrought Bakery.
