Given the size of the school and the classes, it's pretty easy to get to know the professors. They genuinely seemed interested in seeing their students grow and take advantage of career opportunities. After I graduated, I actually had a professor get in touch with me to tell me she had a pamphlet for me about a graduate fellowship that I might be interested in--a fellowship that would later give me a free ride to grad school. ;-) Despite it being a small school, there was always a lot to do. Their language programs, in particular, were a great source of entertainment outside of classes. I remember many fine dinners spent at the French House--far away from the dreaded cafeteria. ;-) Student government is surprisingly active for a smaller school. The extracurricular offerings were many and quite diverse. The campus has since expanded. I got a peek at it a couple summers ago at an alumni function. It looked great and, to be honest, I wished the expansion had been complete when I was still a student there. :-)

I never really noticed this place before, probably because I wasn't painting at the time. I recently took up, watercolor, and brought all my stuff up here, but needed a few extra supplies. During my first visit, I noticed they had a workshop on that upcoming Saturday, and I eagerly signed up for it. It was an all-day workshop with Paul Taylor, and he was an INCREDIBLE instructor. Even though I had taken classes for three months before we left Texas, I learned so much from him in that one day. The class focused on doing one painting from beginning to end, and you would think an seven hour day would be too much for one painting, but it was absolutely perfect. It allowed us to take our time and allowed time for him to explain every move and assist us as we painted. Now about the shop... What a jewel! It is very well stocked, and had almost everything I needed, except for a couple of paint colors. But to top it off, the owner was working the day I visited, and she was so incredibly helpful. She walked around and helped me find everything I needed, and we had a wonderful visit while I was there. I returned again on another day when a young woman was working, and she was equally as helpful and enjoyable. When we come up here next year, I think I'm going to base our visits around the classes they offer. I would love to take the watercolor class that they offer that goes on for several weeks. Many of the local…read morepublic school systems offer a better, more complete, and more supportive environment for children. Here's why: My son was abruptly expelled from Allendale Columbia, and the school has made no attempt to rectify the situation. I'm going to communicate the facts of the situation and let you draw your own conclusions about how students are treated by Allendale Columbia. As background, my son (a first grader) has some mild behavioral issues that I acknowledge can be a challenge to deal with. We were working with the school, my son's pediatrician, and my son's therapist. We were seeing positive improvements and our impression was that things were headed in a good direction. On February 24th, 2021, at approximately noon, I informed Allendale Columbia that we might not be returning to the school for the following school year. On the same day, at 3:45pm, I received a call from Interim Head of School Shannon Baudo. Baudo claimed there had been "an incident" in the after school program, provided few details, and told me that my son was expelled from school effective immediately. He never had a chance to say goodbye to his friends or collect his belongings. We never received a written incident report. Two days later, on February 26th, my wife and I had a phone call with Baudo and the lower school principal Michelle Feiss. By this time, Baudo's story changed, and she insinuated that my six year old son had acted inappropriately towards a girl in the after school program. This is an allegation I take extremely seriously, so I called the parents of the girl, who were not aware of the severity of the situation. The school has still provided no proof, and no written incident report. The school refused to refund any tuition, even the tuition for the portion of the school year we did not receive. Only you can make decisions for your family. However, I feel that I'd be doing a disservice to the parent community in Rochester if I did not make you aware of this event, and the school's callous and abrupt response.

Potential students beware. It seems to be all about the money!…read more I registered and paid for a stained-glass class at Studio 34 through the Rochester Brainery for $295. The class was supposed to have been taught by a world-renowned glass artist, and the class description read that it included all the glass and all materials except for protective eyewear. On the first day of class, the instructor, who was not the professional glass artist listed in the course description, had us look through bins of glass scraps after we'd decided on a pre-approved design. While I found some pieces I could use, I could not find green or blue glass that matched and/or were large enough for the design. The instructor looked too, couldn't find any, then brought out some sheets of glass for me to choose from. At no point was there a mention of having to pay more for the glass. When I showed up the following week, I was told that I had to pay for the green and blue glass I'd picked out the week before. I objected, and the instructor said I had to call the owner, who said that the bins had copious amounts of glass for the projects. They did not. They were inadequately stocked. I was not the only one having difficulty finding glass. Every student had trouble. The owner said that my options were to pay for the glass or take a refund for the class. I will not be forced into paying for glass that was supposed to be included in the class cost so I took the refund. If there was an additional cost to the glass, that should have been said upfront when the sheets were brought out by the instructor. And it turns out that this class does not even provide the finishing piece so we couldn't actually hang our stained-glass projects. We could only leanthem against a window. The finishing piece is part of another class and this was not mentioned in the course description. Another class and more money to finish one piece. When a course description says we're going to be instructed by a glass master, I expect that it will be unless I'm notified in advance that it's not the case and offered a chance to opt-out at that time. When a course description says the class includes the materials, I expect to be able to find glass that I can use to create an integrated piece, rather than random scraps that result in a mismatched mess. The only other option offered was to open my wallet and pay more.

The studio is located on the second floor of a multifunctional historical building in the Neighborhood of the Arts. When you come to the studio don't be afraid to knock on the door... just walk in. I came to the studio with no experience in any of the art they offered and absolute no knowledge. Marilynne and her instructors are excellent teachers and truly care to make your experience special. The class size I sat in on was a glass fusion class. If you don't know what that is(which I didn't before I stopped in) it's where you cut colored pieces of class and place them on a big piece of glass. Once you get your desired arrangement it then gets put in a furnace and melts into an awesome piece of art, just the way you arranged it. The class was a small class size, 4 people total. The instructor gave the students great instruction, then let them get creative. She offered pointers and answered questions along the way. I look forward to signing up for some of the hot glass classes. Also, it's important to note that Studio 34 repairs jewelry. So if you have a favorite piece that needs mending whether its glass, beads, or metal...stop in here!

It was a bit difficult for us to find it since our GPS led us through the winding campus roads. There was ample parking in front of the Arts Center which was a delightful surprise. Since we got there fairly early, we took a short stroll around the concert hall. There were beautiful sculptures and art pieces around, a cute seating area (for students I'm guessing). The evening didn't start out great. The usher literally led us to the wrong seats, on the opposite end of the theater. It was an ordeal finding our seats and the people we passed while looking for our seats were quite rude which put me in a bad mood. The seats were a bit cramped; I couldn't stand up to dance. They were comfortable enough to sit in though! The acoustics weren't fabulous from where I was sitting by the right side door. During the intermission, I stepped out. Again, the people down our row were rude and grunted at us as we tried to get passed them. The water fountain outside of the door did not work! The concessions stand only took cash and it was super crowded. I ended up going to a vending machine downstairs. The bathroom I went to (downstairs) was very clean and spacious. It was much nicer than I had expected it to be. Overall, I have mixed feelings about the Nazareth Arts Center. On the one hand, it was a pretty and clean facility with decent seats. But on the other hand there were so many small things like the incompetent usher and broken water fountain that really turned me off to it. I'm willing to give it another try and come back for another show in the future (hopefully with a different crowd).
