A well-known bakery in Evanston that was highly recommended to me so I had to come and try it. ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 8/10 Pretty much as you would expect out of any bakery. As you walk in there are a lot of glass displays with the various baked goods for sale so that you can see them and have your mouth watering for them. The area inside is rather small and there isn't really any sitting space, not that any is really expected. SERVICE : 8/10 The worker was nice and knowledgeable about the various options and explained some of the differences in some of the different pastries available. FOOD: 8/10 The few baked goods I tried were really good. Sea Salt Caramel Tart - A decent sized decadent chocolate and caramel tart with delicious pie crust encircling it. This is a really rich dessert so whether you like it or not depends on if you like it to be heavy or light. Red Velvet Cupcake - The flavor and texture of the cupcake were on point and the entire cupcake together with the frosting came together well. Honestly, I felt that this was even better than Molly's Cupcakes which is a high standard indeed. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 8/10 I want to try the raspberry white chocolate tarts! It's a great old fashioned bakery. Small inside but has everything that you could want from a bakery. It reminds me of the bakeries that seemed to be on every block when I was young, although there are fewer and fewer now. Good service and good bread, a good variety of cute tasty cookies, donuts and pastries. They seem to have much better flavor than the pastries sold at supermarkets. I live in Rogers Park, so it's a hop and a skip to get to Evanston and Bennison's. Conveniently located right off of the Davis stop on the Purple Line, this bakery is pretty well known. Whenever my family is in town or I fly home for the holidays a trip to Bennison's for goodies is always assured. My favorite sweet from the bakery is the almond croissant, which is simply the best I've had in Chicago, even among several French bakeries. I love the care and ingredients that are chosen for the danishes, cookies, and donuts all of which melt in your mouth. Not to mention the macrons, which are packed with flavor. (Big winners are the strawberry and cappuccino flavors.) Prices are solid and the staff is always really kind and professional. I've been to this bakery a couple times now - once for cupcakes and a donut, another time for holiday goodies and Parker House rolls. The staff here are all very friendly, knowledgeable, and quick to offer their help. There is a wide variety of sweet treats including cookies, macarons, cakes, cupcakes, donuts, and bread loaves. While the prices are to be expected, I can't say that any one of the items I've purchased here have blown my mind though. We've purchased a few different cupcakes and while they're good, they're not amazing, which is what I've come to expect from a place that is reviewed so highly on Yelp. The cake itself could be improved upon - it was a little dry and the frosting itself was fine, not overly sweet but also nothing amazing. The donuts are also not that impressive. They have quite a few, all very traditional flavors and combinations of cake and yeast donut varieties. They're also not super sweet, they've got good texture to them, but they're also nothing to write home about. Their parker house rolls (which I think may be a seasonal item) were pretty good, and were sold by the dozen and frozen, for you to purchase and thaw or bake on your own. They were affordable but I was surprised how small they were when I first purchased them. Great flavor though, you could taste the sugar, the yeast, the butter, but they just weren't generous enough to really feel like you're eating a good roll. All in all, it's a solid place to pick up treats and bread if you're on the hunt for it and in the area, but not a place that I'd go out of my way to visit for specific items to give as gifts or to add to my waistline. read more

I grew up in Chicago in the 60s when there was a bakery and every neighborhood sadly that's no longer the case. So that makes Bennison's even more remarkable and special. Their sandwiches and deli items are a bit pricey but well worth what they charge. It's nice that you can order meals for the family and stock up on bakery items. I have nothing but great things to say about Bennisons. A local bakery that delivers on well-prepared and incredible selections. Their sourdough bread is easily my favorite menu item and I get it nearly every weekend. The smell alone in the bakery makes you want to buy more when you arrive! Other notably delicious items were the lemon squares, macarons, croissants, and eclairs. We also ordered "gender reveal" cupcakes from bennisons and they were able to accommodate us so quickly with our order. The cupcakes was so delicious, it almost took away from the reason behind getting them... haha. Employees are teens and they make it seem as if you are bothering them. My wife had a similar experience. I go to the SOAR (streeterville) farmers market every Tuesday morning, and I always hit the Bennison's stand. I have been doing this for 4 years now. I go on a run, then a bring some cash in my pocket and treat myself at the farmers market. I look forward to Tuesdays! I always get a loaf of bread or croissant. The croissants have doubled in price and the bread prices have gone up too but I understand....inflation... I am still willing to go every Tuesday morning because their bakery breads and treats are supreme. The guys who work the stand are always nice, and give me tips on toast toppings. Bennison's Bakery came highly recommended by work colleagues who live in the area. I picked up a variety of croissants, muffins, and donuts for a first meeting with a group of work colleagues. They loved the pastries so much I went back the next day to pick up macarons and macaroons for a second work function. Bennison's staff were friendly and helpful and the baked goods were fantastic! I lost one of the receipts and Bennison's was able to email me a copy since I live hundreds of miles away. Just remember that they limit the number of people inside so be prepared to wait in line outside. Not a big deal since the line moved fast. Ordered: Ham baguette Chocolate chip scone Cinnamon roll Raspberry filled donut The ham baguette is so simple but so delicious! They use Boars Head ham with pickles. They do pair it with Mayo and mustard that finishes the sandwich perfectly. My favorite Bakker food was the cinnamon roll. It's glazed but so soft and cinnamon-y!
