I know it's not the hostess' fault but absolutely terrible moods starting. They definitely should've called people and let people know that they are an hour behind because then it would give people the opportunity who drove 45 minutes like us the opportunity to cancel. I can't even rate the food because we didn't get it. We finally got seated around 8:30 and the food was really good. The chef was impressive and the servers were very attentive. We ended up getting out of here about 10 o'clock so if we had plans after our reservation initially at 7:45, we probably wouldn't have made them, but thankfully we didn't have anything after and it was a fun experience. We probably won't come back to this location as we live in the city, but the quality of the quantity of the food was plenty. The chef was relatively attentive and very skillful. We had a reservation for 5:45. We all arrived promptly. It is now 6:20 and we are still waiting and we're informed that there are two tables still ahead of us. The entire restaurant is running so behind and everyone is very frustrated. This is horrific customer service and disgustingly disappointing. Also, in looking at open table right now, there are still 6:30pm reservations for tonight. I am writing this at 6:23pm. Also, at 6:30, a group of our exact same size was seated, despite that their reservation was for 6pm and ours was for 5:45pm. The significant backup of patrons waiting for their very delayed reservations is also a fire hazard, surely putting the restaurant above capacity and without doubt completely blocking egress. This management is horrible. It needs a significant overhaul. Shame on the management of this godforsaken place. Would give zero stars if I could. I may be more inclined to give this place some grace, if not for my brother, who was also in our party, confirming that he and his wife had this same reservation/seating significant delay when just the two of them came in to this same establishment a couple of months ago. Disappointing Birthday Experience :( Had a 6:00 PM birthday reservation and wasn't seated until 7:00 PM, even though everyone arrived on time. We called ahead to confirm bringing a cake and were told it was fine and would be cut for us. When we arrived, we were suddenly told there was a $5 per person cake fee, which was never mentioned on the phone. On top of that, the birthday credit was not honored because it's apparently not valid Friday-Sunday -- something we were also not told in advance. My family has been going to Benihana for my birthday for years now. While , we've always enjoyed the experience and the food is tasty. Price have significantly gone up overtime, but I get that with most restaurants. It's definitely a special occasion Place when an entrée is around $40-$60 depending on what you order. While it does come with soup, salad, appetizer, and ice cream dessert, it's still a large bill for a family. Service was good and always fun to watch the Chef prepare the food tableside. read more

I went to Benihana for a friend's birthday, and it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had. My portion of the bill was nearly $100, which included my own dinner and a small share of the birthday guest's meal. For that price, I expected much better quality and service. I could have gone to Eddie V's and spent less for a significantly better meal. I ordered the hibachi scallops, and the seafood quality was extremely poor. The leftovers smelled so bad when I got home that I couldn't even bring them into the house and ended up throwing them directly into the outdoor garbage. Based on my experience, I would strongly caution against ordering seafood here. The service was also frustrating. Our waiter was unable to split the checks, which meant I couldn't use my preferred payment method and made the billing process more complicated than it should have been. At the end of the meal, the staff took a photo of our group, which was a thoughtful gesture. However, it would have been better if they had asked whether we wanted to pose instead of taking the picture unexpectedly at the table. Overall, the food quality, service, and value did not justify the cost. I would not recommend this location and do not plan to return. read more

This place was great when we went, super cold night, fairly late in the shift, and not only did they warmly welcome us, they gave us a great meal and show. The service was perfect and fast and polite. Alec was our server and Jeremy was our cook. Jeremy cooked everything to perfection and we really enjoyed the wide variety of things he was able to serve. One stand out - the thinly sliced grilled zucchini. I wasn't expecting much out of that but it was fantastic. The fried rice was good too. We ordered the up charge version with beef and thought we were getting ground beef but it was steak. Still good, but different than we expected. The soup was great too, perfect for a cold day. The salad was just okay but everything else made up for it. Alex the server was very attentive and always ready with refills of water or Diet Coke. My second time dining at this location. I sat at the hibachi table up in the summer to celebrate my birthday. I absolutely loved the experience and food prepared in front of me. The cook put on a amazing show for us and the server made sure everyone at the table was having a good time. My food was seasoned to perfection. My daughter likes to celebrate her Birthday at Benihana. There were 7 of us at the table, 4 adults, 3 children. We really drew the short straw having " Javier" as our chef, I don't think he could have screwed it up worse if he tried. He cooked the fried rice first, the shrimp appetizer was served after our meal and he served the children last. Now let's talk about service, I know it was a Saturday and a lot of people were waiting for tables, but the pressure to force us to leave ruined our meal. I felt so sorry for my granddaughter, because Chef Javier prepared her meal last, the poor little girl was trying to finish her meal while the waiter continually tried to take her plate. Start to finish we were at the table less than an hour. Additionally, ridiculously prices for mediocre food, not to mention Chef Javier used salt like he was trying to clear ice from a sidewalk. Beware this location does not respect reservations! My family came in at 5:30 on Saturday for a reservation we made many weeks in advance (kid and baby in hand) and said it would be a 45 min wait. Staff showed zero sympathy despite us having a baby, and the restaurant was clearly packed from overbooking or seating walk-ins ahead of reserved guests. They blamed it on "tables not getting up," but if you have reservations on the books, you don't seat walk-ins in those spots first. I made a reservation for a Saturday birthday dinner for my mom (party of four). Booking online was easy, and there was also an option to call in. Parking was manageable, though the shared lot with nearby stores caused some congestion. I arrived 10 minutes early without issue. When we entered the restaurant, the hostess experience immediately set a negative tone. The hostesses were engaged in their own conversation and barely acknowledged us, making it feel like we were interrupting them rather than being welcomed in. Instead of a simple "Welcome in," we got a cold, transactional "How can we help you?" I provided my name and reservation time, and after handing menus to another hostess, there was no "Enjoy your meal" or any polite acknowledgment. I even said "Thank you" to them, only to be met with blank stares--no response, no smile, nothing. That immediately rubbed me the wrong way. To make matters worse, after I clearly stated that I had a reservation for four and that we had all arrived together, the hostess still asked, "Is your entire party here?" and reminded me that we couldn't be seated unless everyone was present. This felt completely unnecessary and rushed, as they could visibly see that we were all standing together. It was just another layer of a poor first impression, making the entire interaction feel transactional and unwelcoming. The dining area wasn't crowded, yet it felt congested with staff standing around. We were seated at a communal hibachi table and initially told we had to sit a certain way to accommodate additional guests. However, our amazing server Mimi (Noami) later informed us that no one else would be joining, so we could spread out for comfort--which made much more sense given the empty restaurant. Mimi was attentive, frequently checked in, and ensured our allergies were communicated to the chef, Daniel, who verified them before preparing our food. The food itself was great, and while the hibachi tricks were average, they were still fun for first-timers. The restaurant also sang happy birthday and gave us a photo, which was a nice touch. However, the seating arrangements remained awkward. The extra place settings were never cleared, making the table feel unnecessarily cramped as food arrived. The hostess's poor judgment on seating, without actually checking the reservation list, was frustrating. After we paid and left, we returned within five minutes because my brother forgot his hat. We checked the table, lost and found, the bathroom, and the hostess stand, but it was nowhere to be found. It was strange that an item could disappear so quickly, especially at a restaurant where lost items are typically set aside. Overall, I am in no rush to return to this location. The food and service from Mimi were great, but the rude and disengaged hostesses put a bad taste in my mouth from the start. First impressions matter, and this one was not great. I don't believe in spending money at places where I don't feel comfortable. The food is always fun bc you can chat w strangers while the chefs throw shrimp tails into their chef hats and make onions hold lava flames. Food always tastes good when it's made fresh. The steak was okay but made to order. And even though I didn't order the hibachi, the chef was kind and gave me some fried rice and shrimp bc there was enough at the table. The chicken fried rice was $7. This place is fun for birthdays. They took pics of the birthday ppl and gave us a hard copy asap. They also gave birthday ppl as well as the non birthday ppl a bowl of ice cream which was also nice. The shrimp tempura crunchy roll was $15 and not great. "Chef" Randy and the food were superb, but the server disappeared for long periods of time, made several mistakes, plates piled up, ran out of water, forgot our "table-neighbor's" apps, and generally made the experience unworthy of nearly $400. I would've spent more and added lobster tails as a nice treat, but our Server was nowhere to be found. At one point, our "Chef" needed help with something and couldn't find anyone. I even stopped a passing hostess to help our neighbors with something they needed. That's why we usually get take out once a month rather than dining in. I sent more specifics to the restaurant via their "contact us," but apparently my concerns aren't worthy of a response, because it's been three weeks and I've heard nothing. I guess I'm not surprised, because when we arrived, we waited :40 past our rsvp time and stared at two dirty bar tables the entire time while three managers just walked by them. The last time I went to Benihana it was for my daughter's 2nd bday...and she's 16 now! Lol Decided to stop in last minute for dinner with my best friend and our kids. Our chef, I think his name was Rodrigo?, was very friendly and did a great job!! Food had great flavor and good portions. The issue that we did have was with our waitress/ server who took our order. I think her name was Tina. The first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was when my friend was ordering salmon and white rice for her young son Tina said "are you sure you want that? That's going to be veeerrry expensive!"...did my friend look broke or something? Lol. That was unnecessary and my friend usually orders that for her son and has never had a problem. When we ordered our dishes, my friend ordered white rice with her meal, which reminded me to tell her l wanted white rice for my order too. When Rodrigo served the chicken fried rice for the table, he said he had "extra" rice so he gave it to me and put it in front of my plate. When Tina came back around to pass out the white rice she was almost arguing with my friend that she ordered chicken fried rice and it was not extra! She politely told her no she had asked for white rice and Tina walked away with an attitude mumbling something under her breath. Where it was time to pay, the party next to us finished their dishes way before us and Tina was bringing out to go boxes and taking payments for the dinner. Me and my party were still clearly eating and yet she asked us twice if we wanted to go boxes. She put the check down in front of us and just walked away. I felt so rushed! She must have seen the look on my face because she walked by and was like "take your time, take your time". There were plenty of empty tables around too. We quickly finished up and left but I don't think we'll be returning, at least not to this location. I felt super rushed and it ruined the experience if I'm being honest. 3 stars because Rodrigo was great! Haven't been here in decades! It was a friends pick to go to Benihana for lunch. I haven't been here in over 15+ years so I don't quite know what to expect. Dolly welcomed us and was very accommodating when I asked her for a booth vs group seating. The Lunch menu had plenty of selection to choose from including shrimp, chicken breast, steak, veggies or scallops and vegetable fried rice. We ordered chicken fried rice which is $1 more per entree. Lunch came with soup and sautéed vegetables. The salad was additional and you can't substitute the soup for the salad. The onion soup was good but they put fried onion straws IN the broth so it's like you're eating soggy breaded onions with the broth. The salad still has their signature ginger dressing which they make very well here. Nice, chilled and delicious! Entrees came and were nicely plated but we had to wait a bit for the fried rice. I'm not sure why they didn't just put the rice on the plate with our food? It would have been a much better presentation. When the rice finally did come, we just dumped it in the middle of our plates. It was pretty good too. The 6 shrimp had a good flavor. Steak teriyaki was a little chewy but the sauce was flavorful. Lunch specials portions were good but I wouldn't recommend dinner here. Restaurant was clean but needs some updating. read more

So bummed about how bad this place has gotten. The prices are crazy expensive. Hibachi shrimp used to be 26.00 now it's 41.00. The chef didn't cook the shrimp all the way. The appetizer of shrimp came at the end of the meal no waitress came back after the rice came. It has been like this the last three times. Food isn't like it used to be. It was 259 for 4 people. Side of corn was 4.50. We've been coming for 20 years and will not be back if they don't change management and prices. Sad to leave this review but it is what it is. If you're coming to Benihana, you're coming for the show. A chef will slice and dice your food right in front of you, spinning spatulas and doing all kinds of crazy tricks with your food on a flat-top grill. To children, this is amazing. And if you have kids (maybe ages 6-10), Benihana is a worthwhile visit. For adults, the show is nice, but the food is the real focus... and I'm sad to say it's just mediocre. Everything you eat is drowned in butter and grilled. There's nothing wrong with that. But you won't really walk away talking about how great the food is. It's just fine. I liked Benihana. I may come back someday. But when I do, it will be more for the show than the meal. read more

Tip: Sign up for the birthday coupon!! I really only come here once a year when I have the coupon. They are very generous and give you $30! I will say on this last visit the tables felt very cramped. People were seated at the table behind us and kept bumping into us. I will say that for portion/value, you get a lot of food. My go-to is Rocky's choice, which comes with chicken and steak. This is also served with salad, soup, rice, and a scoop of ice cream. Cocktails are reasonably priced as well. They have flavored teas as well as soft drinks, too. read more

Poorly managed restaurant. I made a reservation for 10 people, one entire table, 2 weeks in advance for last night. My party started to arrive shortly after I get a text stating my table is ready. We check in with the grade school aged girls acting as hostesses and the tell us that once the entire party arrives, we will be seated. This is 7:25, reservation was for 7:30. Everyone arrives and we are given a pager. Obviously our table was not ready. We stood in the bar area for 25-30 minutes and finally ask when our table is ready. We are told that they are just seating the 7:00 reservations and "they can't do nothing" about it. A conversation with the manager was just as productive with him telling us they can't put time limits on tables. Pretty ridiculous, it's a hibachi restaurant. Ended up leaving and ordering Chinese for the group from a small mom and pop place in Downers Grove. Worked out much better. Definitely won't go back here. Very disappointing. read more
