Bennie's has become our regular Friday night pizza place. Best place in town. Never disappoints. Perfect pace. Cheerful staff and owners. So Ive been watching some Dave Portnoy pizza reviews lately and he mentioned something called Detroit pizza. Never heard of it. Well, were here at Bennie's last night and there it was on the menu. So we had to try it. But first, for an appetizer with some wonderful viognier from the Rhone, we enjoy some lightly fried burrata in a light vodka sauce. Was cooked perfectly. Hot outside, still cool inside. Tasty sauce with just the slightest zip. We ordered a Detroit with pepperoni, hot honey and a dash of chili. Comes in an eight slice rectangle. Wow. Super flavorful. Cross between a Sicilian and a Chicago. Lighter and more "doughy" than a Sicilian but firm under carriage and generous cheese. Very filling we could only eat one slice each. Took the rest home for lunch. Yum. Love left over pizza cold or sometimes heated up in a skillet. We finished with their homemade cannoli. Perfecto. BYOB. Fantastic experience. I dined in. These guys made a Detroit style pie - I ordered ahead of time - they had it ready pipping hot. It was terrific - a rectangle with a nice crunchy outer crust with a hint of cheese, softer inner base, a healthy layer of cheese, and topped with chunks of tomato and sauce that blended sweet and salty. Really impressed they did this right here in central Jersey. I mean folks order their cheese slices left and right - but try their Detroit - really great. Ya look around town and some places want you left kidney and wallet for their service and pies. 17 bucks gets ya a great "undercarriage" minimal "flop" tastes (you can clearly see i had some - dont judge me) and a 17 or 18 in pie which is unheard of at that price ans Quality of Food. The cheese has that quality taste not that "i melt easy mozzarella" taste at other places. The Ambiance is actually low Key. We stopped in to Beniamino's for the first time and after being served raw pizza, we will not be back. The complimentary bread was great and we were off to a good start. We ended up waiting around 40 minutes for the pizza, only for it to be raw in the center. I didn't get a chance to take a photo of it after the slices were pulled apart. We each ate a slice from the outer edges and as we got to the center, the dough was not cooked. My brother informed the waitress and she responded that they were going to put the pizza back in the oven for us. We declined. After waiting an overly long time for a single pizza and then not even being able to eat the whole pie, we needed to leave. It also seems unsanitary to take a pizza that was out on our table that we had taken slices from and put it back in the oven. We paid for the pizza and we left. We're not the kind of people to fight over customer service and demand a refund or refuse to pay. However, it seems like this would've been an appropriate time for the staff to offer to comp the meal. read more

Awesome local pizza joint + BYO. A group of seven of us walked in here on a Saturday for lunch after a hike and wow, so glad we did! There is a more casual area for a quick bite/ orders by the slice and a more formal table seating area in the back - we sat in the back. Ordered two large pies. Warning: the pies are quite generous in size. The veggie pizza was PHENOMENAL - so fresh and light. If you are a veggie lover, get it. The buffalo chicken and jalapeño pizza was good too. This pizza place has had many names but there has always been a pizza in that location for almost 23 years from when we first moved local. The decor is simple but the folks running it are as genuine as they come -- three brothers and their father and their colleagues dish up a huge selection of pizza by the slice, as well as pastas, salads, heroes, calzones, and some amazing cannolis and deserts as well! The service is good but the waiting for pizza is long (30-40 minutes). We visited twice in 2 weeks and had the same experience. Salads are on the expensive side, pizza price is average. Beniamino's is relatively new to the scene, taking over the location from the previous occupant Vera Pizza. I personally like the change. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and the service is quick. The pizza is pretty good too! The Margherita has a decent sauce with great, fresh basil and gooey delicious mozzarella gobs. This is a family run business that opened their own restaurant years ago after gaining experience in other restaurants. The staff is friendly and helpful. Ive eaten here twice since opening once as a quick slice at the causal area and once as a family sit down meal in their back. I so wanted to give a five star review and I hope I can on another visit but it just isn't deserved. The Brooklyn pizza I love but notably my other three family members didn't like it. I'd order it often for delivery but alas here's a pizza joint that won't deliver. Dumb. On our most recent visits we decided to try their pasta and salads plus the pizza from their dining area. Let's start with service. Horrible. Grant it it was a fri night but we came early and were seated before the place got crowded. Took 10 minutes of flagging down various staff to get a menu. Then another 10 to get someone back to place the order. Forget about getting water or drinks in the mean time. Food took about 40 min to come out. At one point the waiter asked us why we were still there thinking we had paid. Looked very surprised when I snapped back that we were waiting on the food! We just ordered a salad (tasteless) and a kids pasta (suitable but didn't take "homemade"$ and a Brooklyn pie which despite being very greasy I loved. Took forever to get plates cleared and to get a check . They never asked us about desert or suggested we grab wine from next door for their byo policy. Place was loud and decor is cheap. I saw this place as they were getting ready to open. I love Italian food and pizza so I was excited to check them out. My family and parents went out for dinner a bit late. They stayed open past their closing time and did not rush us out. The server was so patient with my mom that can be a bit picky with ordering. They accommodated her with no problem. My husband ordered the fresh homemade fettuccine with bolognese. He loved it. I ordered the Porcini and Sausage Ravioli. It was rich and creamy. The ravioli was stuffed I could not believe they could put so much in a tiny package. My son asked for the homemade spinach ravioli with vodka sauce. I tried it. A unique combination but really enjoyed the ravioli. My daughter had the special, homemade spinach fettuccine in a Heirloom cream sauce. I think that was my favorite. My little one even ordered tortellini Alfredo and loved it. The portions were nice. We had some leftovers for lunch the next day. We tried the cannolis. The shell was nice and crispy, NOT soft or soggy. The filling was great, not overly sweet. I liked it so much that I returned for lunch to try the pizza. The slices were big and filled with cheese and toppings. Best of all they were crispy. No floppy pie here. I had a veggie slice. I loved the red peppers. I don't usually like green peppers cooked. So this was an amazing veggie pizza. And they loaded it with fresh ingredients. If you like veggie pizza you have got to try this one. Finally a great pizza place in town. This place is a DELIGHT. We came here on Friday at 7:30pm, after reading Yelp reviews we understood that they were BYOB so we stopped by the wine shop next door and grabbed a bottle of merlot. The front area is for more casual dining, enjoying slices of pizza quickly. In the back they have a sit-down eatery (still casual, but more equipped for date night). The waitstaff was friendly and attentive the whole night (thank you, Devin!), they kept apologizing for things taking so long but everything was quick and fresh! Every meal starts with fresh rolls, provided with oil, seasonings, and garlic. The rolls were steaming hot from the oven, it tasted like they used their pizza dough--absolutely delicious. We wanted to try as many dishes from the menu as we could, so we ordered the fried calamari, fresh fettuccini with ragu and meatballs, and a small pepperoni pizza. The fried calamari came with huge rings of lightly battered calamari, it came with a bowl of the marinara which was superb. The fettuccini was perfectly cooked with delicious ragu and the meatballs are OUT OF THIS WORLD. The pasta dishes are HUGE and so good. Next time, we might try the meatball and ricotta appetizer. The pizza was also excellent, great crust, great amount of cheese, well seasoned. Overall, the food was five stars. We have so much food now for leftovers and I can't wait to keep enjoying our Beniamino's meal. We'll definitely be back! read more

We met a guy in a supermarket who raved about the pizza and Italian food at this place. So after a weekend , I decided to try. I walked in and ordered a slice of pizza to eat and a sub to go. The young man said the sub would take about 15 minutes. So I got and ate my pizza. Pizza was ordinary at best, kind of bland, nothing like NY pizza as the guy recommending it said. Finished my pizza while waiting for the sub, and waiting, and waiting. 28 minutes after ordering I got my sub. The entire time there was no more than one customer and myself eating in at the place. Walk in folks picking up take out orders repeatedly. I do not know what their backup of call in orders was. The sub sandwich was kind of skimpy on meat and very bland also. I come to notice that the sub had no salt, pepper, oil , vinegar or oregano, but it's called an Italian sub. BTW, they charge you to use your credit card, another surprise. read more

UPDATE: My son had some friends over last night. He asked for pizza from Benny for his party. I ordered four pies for him, his friends, and the rest of my family. When I got there the pizzas weren't ready - there was a problem with the printer. But it was a Saturday night and I was happy to relax and have a few good conversations while I was there. I even bumped into an old colleague who couldn't place my face and is probably still scratching his head trying to figure out who I am. I spoke with Benny for a while about the business and found out that he makes his own sausage for the pizza and he makes his own pasta as well. I also found out that he's selling 18 inch pies and calling them 16 inch. That's old school and gets a thumbs up from me. Just so you know, if you want a "works" without mushrooms and with bacon, it's called a "Roland". We brought the four pizzas home and the kids and family all loved them. Well done, like I asked, but not burned at all. Great pies just like the old neighborhood. We're looking forward to coming by again. Maybe have a little fresh pasta on my wife's birthday and open a bottle of wine. More to come... --------------- New place. My family and I came to Beniamino's for dinner. The restaurant is very clean. You can either dine in and have a waitress/waiter or grab a slice and a seat. We sat in and ordered from the menu. My kids had pizza slices and personal pizza. My husband and I ordered from the menu and we were not disappointed. I had eggplant rollatini and my husband had fried veal with a salad. My daughter loves the penne vodka pizza (her new favorite) and the garlic knots. My pizza favorite is Benny's Sausage (thin crust brooklyn). Our 'go to' restaurant. Disregard the negative reviews.
