Somehow we managed to stop in at a time when it was not at all busy. Although there are large windows, the space is dark. In a good way. A bar runs along the back wall. There are several tables scattered around a large room with high ceilings and a bit of outdoor seating right at an intersection making for plenty of people watching. We came for the beer and sat at the bar. Chalkboards list the available beers as does their website. There are plenty to choose from and you can get a growler to go. Besides beer they have a few wines, scotch, bourbon and full bar as well as snacks, hot dogs and sandwiches. We ordered a bread and cheese snack which was a soft, brie like cheese and warm baguette. This was a very tasty snack. My SO got a spicy hotdog which he very much enjoyed. All the staff were friendly and the area clean. There are two restrooms down a hall near the bar, each is a 'single person', one men's one woman's. Located in the city, parking is on street, paid lot or garage. I recommend public transportation, bike or walk. This very laid back, easy going, beer focused business should definitely be on your list if you enjoy craft brews. read more

Weren't really sure when we walked in but it was open, near our hotel, and we were exhausted from travel. We ordered a juicy ipa and the sausage dog. The server was super friendly. The place was clean and had an off-beat vibe. The beer was delicious--just what this thirsty gal needed. The hot dog--wow! I swear it was 16 inches long on a baguette with Dijon sauerkraut. I've been visiting Benelux for years and truly think it's the best one-stop-shop for brews and grub near McGill campus. The selection of local beers is extensive, with on-tap options rotating frequently and a great variety in type and flavour. I started with the blonde framboise, which was so tart you could classify it as a sour! This came as a bit of a shock, as I asked before ordering and the server assured me that it would not be sour -- nonetheless, I enjoyed it! After, I had the Belgian blonde, which was also quite tart but a bit more balanced. Fantastic beers for a hot summer day! While the inside is spacious and the atmosphere fun, it can get quite loud. The 2 outdoor patios are large, and the new one (on Jeanne Mance side street) has lots of tree coverage and less street noise. Note that this great spot fills up quick after 5pm! read more

Very solid brewery near McGill. Beers are fresh, solid with very generous pours. If you like flavorful and strong brews this is a solid choice. It's a bit loud but friendly enough. Chill modern meets grunge kind of hipster vibe. Flights of 5 beers of choice available. Decent service but our waiter did spill some of our beer ): Unfortunate lackluster food/snack selection. Now onto the beers: 1. Miledor - British Golden Ale (5.4%), very drinkable with a light hoppy bite. 2. Sigmund - Pilsner (5.3%), a bit more bitter than most Pilsners. 3. Gaia - Blanche (White Wheat Beer, 4.6%), light, crisp, and floral 4. Duplex - Helles (German Pale Lager, 4.8%), super light and watery, somewhat reminiscent of PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon), don't particularly recommend 5. Flimzie - Blonde Dabbaye (Belgian Blonde, 5.7%), floral, slightly grassy, and some notes of clove and other spices; balanced and interesting to drink, finishes dry 6. Grande Visite - Dunkel Lager (5.4%), dark German Lager, almost like mixing a stout with a lager 7. La Marge - Stout (5.1%), one of the most coffee stouts I've ever had; smells and tastes of fresh coffee! I have been here several times over the years and there has been some great changes along the way. It is not obvious from the front but there is a lovely patio in the back, which is the perfect place for a drink on a sunny day. The beers selection has always been great, and they have expanded their food options in the recent year also. We ordered the hotdog and it came piled high with sauerkraut and a side of crisps, which offset the greasiness of the sausage. Also, their smoked almonds are addictive and goes perfectly with the beer. The service team is friendly and happy to chat when it isn't too busy. Not busy at all, definitely a good place to chill. We shared a few $2 samplers: Lux - Blonde Zeeland - Saison Semuta - Saison Amber Motek - Imperial Pilsner Sabotage - IPA Cimonak - Porter The beers were all A-OK and quite enjoyable. Third and final stop on our craft beer tour. This place had a decidedly modern/hip feel to it, where the first two locations felt like true brewpubs. Not that that's a bad thing, but it definitely felt different from the first two stops. The first beer we had here (fifth of the night) was the Armada, which was an American-style brown ale. This was paired with four different chocolate pieces: one milk, one dulce de leche, one 70% cacao and one 80% cacao. The tasting for this pairing went: sip, nibble chocolate, sip. Tasting with the candies did change the flavor of the beer, but I liked the beer just fine on its own. Heck, I liked the chocolates just fine on their own, too. I did enjoy the Armada - it was dark, and so paired well with the two dark chocolate pieces, but it wasn't thick or heavy. This was probably my second favorite beer of the night. Beer number two here (sixth of the night) was a riff on a Pamplemousse. Instead of using grapefruit, they used raspberries. It added a subtle sweetness to an already strong-flavored beer, but it was super tart. Especially after having just finished off a piece of 80% cacao. Still, once I got past the shock of how tart the beer was, I rather enjoyed it. I don't think I'd order it on its own, but as a taster, and as an ending to the night, it wasn't terrible. I didn't get the warm and fuzzies from the restaurant itself. The waiters helping our guide were kind of cold and one was a bit rude to a lady on the tour, who told the waitress that she wasn't drinking. The waitress basically told the lady she didn't care, and plopped a glass of Armada down in front of her. Not exactly customer-oriented. I'm sure this is a popular place with the locals - they were pretty busy by the time our tour ended at around 6 pm - but I really prefer something more low-key, and focused on beer. Actually a huge fan of this place. Apparently this year was their 10 year anniversary! Super chill spot in the heart of Montreal with a great outdoor area before midnight or so. The staff are friendly, speak english and are happy to give you advice on tasters and so much more. They have a limited food option but are happy to give you lists of nearby places that deliver. I was a big fan of their interesting IPAs, which ranged from light colored to dark colored, as well as pretty much a BLACK saison that I've never had before and may never have again. The bar area is nice, restrooms are clean, and the humid outdoors during summer months are fantastic for kicking back and having a cold one. A+ read more

Just great. This place RULED. On a recent vacation to Montreal (I know, in January, we're nuts.) we stopped in here twice. It was almost like it was our hangout. Great beer, delicious wine and a great atmosphere. And EURO-DOGS. Take note, Chicago bars. A high quality wiener (snerk.) on high-quality French bread, with grainy brown mustard, to chew on with your beers or glass of wine. Just delicious. Medina, our charming bartenderess on both nights had GREAT recommendations for A. beer for my charming companion, and B. other good places to go in Montreal to enjoy said libations. The ambiance was bare bones, but very appealing. It got crowded, but it seems there were a lot of regulars. All in all, my kind of joint, and I'd RUN back here when (not if!) Interesting pub on a busy street (sherbrooke). It's busier in the afternoons (4 to 8) than at night (from my couple experiences here, as well as just passing it often). They have a big patio facing the street so it can be noisy. There are also many homeless people who hang out on that particular street corner. Benelux has a wide selection of beers on tap (10+), so something for everyone. The last time I went the service was awful. I met a friend there to catch up but we had limited time and we're just going to have 1 drink each. My friend finished his before me and our server kept coming back and asking us if we wanted another drink. When I was on my last sip before we could even ask for the check, he told us we needed to leave because there were people waiting for tables. We went inside to pay and I paid for my beer in cash. The server gave me back less than the correct amount of change and I told him so. He responded saying "yes, because the tip wasnt included on the check." (*note this whole conversation happened in French). He took out over a 20% tip for himself. I have worked in the service industry and know that you are supposed to give back change then your customer will decide how much tip to leave in cash, the same way that when you pay on card a customer decides. This turned me off Benelux & will likely not come back. read more

Cheap flights of beer. Excellent selection of varied styles of brew. The patio is a great place to catch an interesting altercation between the transient clan that converges on the park side of the patio. They had 10-12 beers on tap and flights include 5 beer samples of your choice for a dirt cheap price... compared to San Francisco, at least. Servers are friendly, the patio is super chill but yeah, you and everyone else outside might be interrupted by what once seemed like harmless hobos uniting for a smoke into a rather large, loud, and intense fight amongst miscreants. But again, compared to San Francisco... at least the homeless of Montreal aren't naked. They have some food options but we'd just eaten so we stuck to bar snacks and ordered the pickles and chips... what we got were pickles and salted almonds but it was fine. The sodium helped us down those beers a bit faster. Inside was cute, too. Clean and spacious bathrooms, lots of ceiling to floor windows but somehow still really dark. I remember thinking it looked sort of like what I'd imagine the inside of a middle-class pirate ship would like. I think that's a good thing and I'd totally come back. read more

Best microbrew in town and we know there are many. Usually about a dozen of their own beers at a time. They let you taste and have very good descriptions to help. It was a bank originally so one room is the vault. I love the Marge stout. It seems low enough in hops that it doesn't trigger my beer allergy yet my husband who loves ipa beers loves the other varieties. A fun local scene with those who live in the apartment above, those leaving events downtown and those who just live beer. I've been going for ten years. Don't miss it. read more

Personally, I am not a huge fan of beer. I like a good brew with a meal, but don't expect me to pound them back all night. However, Benelux is one of these places where I will enjoy a pint or two. They have all different types of beers that they brew themselves. Some of them can have high alcohol content so look out for what you get. If you are sitting on one of the tables, the service can be a little lackluster as others have mentioned. However, if you sit at the bar you shouldn't have any problems with service. If you are a little hungry while knocking back a few, they serve European style hot dogs which are surprisingly good. There is a terrasse out in the summer too, so on a warm summer evening you can sit back relax and enjoy some hand crafted brews. read more

This bar has lots of beers (and they don't all come from the same brewery - you actually have a bit of choice!), they do flights for a reasonable price, and they also have options for the nice people out there who are not that much into beer (aka me). I asked if I could get a Black Russian, which wasn't on the menu, and they did it with a smile and exactly as I like it - first time in any other beer pub in Montreal! Service is overall top notch (which nice touches, like a paper with the references of your beers when you order a flight, whereas we went to multiple bars where they weren't even sure which beer was where in the flight...) As for the place itself, it is pretty cool - plenty of seatings, a very cool playlist, and enough space for not hearing your neighbors' convos too much. read more

My favourite brewery in the downtown area. If I'm not trekking to Dieu du Ciel, I'm coming here. Benelux provides solid beer, a fantastic Black IPA, and friendly service. I don't have too much negative to say in terms of their beer selection, and I'm never lacking for a choice outside my beloved Black IPA's. The beer geek in me is quite pleased to see that their Belgian styles are consistent and clean, something that is often not present in smaller breweries. Benelux has a nice atmosphere, fairly low volume, great lightning, and decent table set up. This makes it a great place for conversing over a beer after work, or commiserating over one due to work. All in all it holds a solid second place in my quest for Montreal breweries. read more

Beer lovers can find in Benelux a real haven. Their brew list changes constantly, although they normally have at least a beer of every kind on tap (IPA, lager, stout, wheat, bock, the lot). I've never tried their hot dog selection. One of the dogs is "the european", and being European myself I can attest to the thankfully low hot-dog's penetration rate into the old continent, or at least where it counts. So I have no idea what they concocted. Judging by their beers, however, it should be a tasty creation. Avoid it on Friday and Saturday nights unless you want to have your ears mauled by the loud ambience. Your other option is sitting outside (weather permitting), but service in that section is patchy. For an afternoon drink or a beer tasting moment on a quieter night Benelux has few rivals in Montreal. It is certainly the only such bar within a good half-mile range. Location betrays Benelux if you plan on continuing the night elsewhere. Either you walk to St-Laurent, Prince Arthur and Saint Denis (10-15 minutes), or to Crescent (20 minimum). On the good side, the area is usually easier to park in than downtown where the party is. But if you, as a good citizen, do not drink and drive, see my earlier point about walking. It will also help you smell less of beer when you appear before the face-controlling bouncer at your preferred nightclub. I am a regular and have my beer loyalties. If you do not want to commit to a full pint serving, try their taster menu where they bring out five 4-ounce glasses of different beers. A good starting point no doubt. read more

The only downside is that it does get crowded and than the service gets bad. Fantastic brewpub and great location in proximity to our hotel (The Westin) On site hotel (Gazette) is charging $10+ per pint for generic crap like Stella. Take the 3 minute cab to Benelux and we had great service along with a proper last call of 3am. Bartender was knowledgable and friendly, even took my most difficult music requests and played them for me even after he didn't have the tracks in his library (Red Hot Chili Peppers - Don't forget me ) Even though it's very obvious they cater to a local crowd, and English was not the main language, we were still treated well by the guy. The woman behind the register however never showed us the time of day because we weren't fluent in French ? I just hope only the dude got our tip. Girl employee was literally playing with her hair all over our plate of chips and olives while we waited for EuroDog All beers are local and fresh pony kegs, the place is littered with the empties. No old product or old lines for this draught. Tried several styles from a Pilsner to the Black IPA and almost every single one was a hit I can't stress enough, it's the kind of place that defines Montreal and sets it so far apart from Ontario. Highly recommended. Only reason I HAD to take a point was because: - female employee straight up wouldn't even acknowledge us when she found out we spoke English - they nuked our "EuroDog" because they were slammed when we ordered it.
