Following is the disappointing experience I had at this salon. I am reaching out regarding the hair services I received at Avalon Salon yesterday. I am accustomed to having my hair cut, washed, dried and flat ironed as one included service. When I came into the salon for a woman's hair trim, I did share with the stylist that I have very curly hair; so she decided it best to cut the hair dry. The hair was washed and she applied a very nice product to the hair prior to drying. The stylist was taking time to section off the hair to straighten with a brush; this seemed odd to me. When I asked if she was going to flat iron the hair, I was informed that is an additional service; and she did not have time to do that on the appointment today. I questioned how she could be sure the hair cut would be good and she said it should be fine as it was cut dry. For the amount of time it takes to section the hair and blow dry each section, to somewhat straighten it; the hair could be quickly dried with the blower and then sectioned off and flat ironed. In addition, this will ensure the cut is good and will not require a revisit to have it corrected. When you have naturally curly hair as I do, blow drying it is not going to straighten the hair enough to ensure the cut is even. The hair will not smooth down without the flatiron. Regarding the stylists use of time, I can do without the neck massage - it is not a service I requested. When I understood the stylist was not going to flat iron the hair, I had her stop drying the hair and threw the hair back into a hair band until I got home. I would have been a puff ball walking out of the salon without the hair being flat ironed; certainly not how your client wants to feel following services at your business. This is a poor reflection on Avalon Salon, and I am honestly surprised you would want a customer to walk out of your salon under these circumstances. It made me feel like I was visiting a Great Clips or Supercuts!

But when I signed up for the facial online, it was allotted for an hour and a half. But she finished in an hour. When I asked her about the add-on, she was unaware of it and admitted that she "did not check (her) notes" before my appointment. That is probably something I wouldn't admit to the client. And I found it odd that I filled out an intake form online and then had to fill out another (paper) intake upon arrival. And while the esthetician did an ok job, she needs to finesse her massage technique. I am former licensed massage therapist and wanted to coach her on some simple and effective massage techniques. Her massage strokes were incomplete and her hands felt a little clumsy. But I feel she will get there, in time, as she gains more confidence with each client. Otherwise, it's a peaceful and well-curated space - a lovely oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Bend. I will definitely be back for the Japanese scalp treatment!
