Opened earlier this year Cafe Bencotto is the latest addition to Felixstowe increasing restaurant scene. Built in the old fire station the cafe oozes character and has kept the charm of the old building by using exposed brick work mixes with contemporary and antique touches which includes a sheer black marble finish around the kitchen juxtaposed again old chandeliers and creaking oak chairs.
The food is a small selection of pizzas, pastas, meats and salads and like its sister restaurant it fits all its options on a double sided A4 menu.
The restaurant has a mix of table sizes from high tables and stools for 'drinking only' or waiting to large booths capable of holding 10 people.
The kitchen is open so you can see the cooks busy at work all evening and they are busy As they do not take booking at all the restaurant has a lot of last minute locals walking in hoping for a table.
The prices are reasonable ranging from £7 for a salad or simple pasta to £18 for a more complex meat dish.
Although they have a great selection of wines and bottled beers, the only criticism I would give it is that there is only one beer on tap and one tap and although the Italian beer is very nice, on a busy Friday evening you can see that the demand on that tap is high.
Aside from evening dinner they offer a great selection of lighter meals during the day and offer 'nibbley' bits with various coffees and teas.
The staff are friendly and have bonded together well as they all started together and a couple who used to be in the Alex now have more senior roles here.
This is a fantastic addition to Felixstowe and its great to have a restaurant at that end of town as the Elizabeth Orwell was a little lonely being the only large restaurant at that end of town.
