Mission Montessori is a wonderful, loving, caring, and highly academic school. All 3 of our…read morechildren started in preschool and have continued at Mission Montessori. We have 2 girls and 1 boy, each child has a unique personality, and different needs and strengths. My oldest is in 6th grade now and is thriving! My younger children are in 3rd grade and 1st grade, sharing the same classroom, and doing beautifully. I love the multi-age classroom (1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders are together) and the fact that the children learn at their own pace. Many people have a misconception that children in a Montessori school wander around all day. I can assure you, that is not the case. There is a purpose to everything the children do, even though many times the children (and even the parents) are unaware. The children in 1st-3rd grades have workplans for the entire week and that provides the structure. 2nd and 3rd graders complete their own workplans (of course the teachers check them) and 1st graders start creating their own workplans mid-year after they have learned the skill. Each day children complete the work assigned for that day, but the children choose the ORDER in which they do their work. If they finish their work for a day, they may either choose a cultural work or get ahead by completing work assigned later in the week. The children work independently but may quietly ask for help from other children or from the teachers. The work is checked and the children must correct any work that is missed. Each child's workplan is unique, the work is tailored to each child. So there is a balance of structure and independence, but it is customized for each child. It's truly amazing! In addition to the classroom work, the children enjoy specials each day: Art, PE, Gardening, Sustainable Systems, Music, and Spanish. There are goats, chickens, tortoises, bunnies, and a plethora of plants and the children take care of all of them (feed the animals, plant, harvest, weed, change the water, etc.) The children also have the opportunity to do research projects both in the classroom and at home. This week, we finished the children's class presentations. Each child researched and prepared a report and visual aid on a topic. 3rd graders selected a country, 2nd graders a monument, and 1st graders an animal. It was fantastic to watch my 1st grade son present to the class and answer questions about his animal. My 3rd grader is a pro by now because she has done it so many times, but she loved sharing her information as well. This is our 8th year at Mission Montessori and all of my children are doing exceptionally well in this nurturing, yet academically challenging, environment. The teachers are overwhelmed and don't have enough support to handle high demand ASD kids especially ones that require outside the box thinking specialist and ones that require unique curriculum to help them grow. The school forced my daughter to do lower grade academics and then tried to say that I wasn't happy with her academic achievement! She received 100% in her Language Arts 3rd grade 4th quarter and they still insisted that she wasn't ready for 4th grade due to behaviors. Since the start of the school year, my daughter struggled with the high demand that was being placed on her to fit into their programs and she was purposely placed in lower academic curriculum due to her behavior and I tried to constantly advocate that the behaviors were due to boredom but no one would listen to me. I was told that until my daughter started following directions and behaviors improve, her academic would stay the same. I just recently had my daughter's IQ tested and it came back top 5%. She tested into 5th grade reading and 7th grade spelling; her math was behind because the school refused to teach her grade level math telling me initially that she was behind and then they said oh we are too ahead in the curriculum and we can't have her join the 3rd grade class then they wanted me to get her caught up during the summer if she wanted to be in 4th grade. The owner (Victoria) just doesn't really care about your children. Your child is just $$$$ to her. She just wants the money and wouldn't care if your child succeeded or not. They have also had such a huge turn over with their staff and I am not surprised at all. The only reason I tried this place was cause of the so called "great reviews". I usually don't like to place reviews, but I just had to share since so many people recommend this school! I would be very careful with placing my child here.

The staff and teachers at Best Pals were always so sweet and welcoming. Mrs. Bruno greets every child as they walk through the door in the morning, which always made my daughter feel so special. This small school is a gem. My wife and I toured several Montessori programs in central Phoenix…read morebefore deciding on MCH. We love the staff, the curriculum and the other families that attend. Our son started in the beginner program where we saw him grow leaps and bounds developmentally and socially. He is now in the Primary program, and everyday I'm impressed with the knowledge he brings home and how articulately he is able to express himself to adults and peers alike. All of the lead teachers are Montessori certified, but the primary classroom has 2 leads, both certified and a kitchen assistant who cooks with the children and an outdoor assistant. Compared to the other schools we visited the children have more opportunities because of this arrangement. The school is private, so there is tuition even at the higher grades. However, we noticed that because it stayed private when all the other Montessori schools we toured were charter, it seemed to stick closer to the traditional Montessori curriculum we read about in our research. Children were not tested in any standardized way, and the teachers seem more able to truly follow the child. At one of the Montessori charters we saw 5 year olds doing standardized test practice during our tour. Yikes. Another thing we love about this school is how close knit the community is. When we toured we found out that one of the teachers attended the school and all of her children have been through the program, the director's husband was a student there and all of their children attended the school, etc. There is only one of every classroom so the children all know each other. Our son loves all of his friends and speaks of school excitedly everyday. On the weekends he begs to go to school to play with his friends. We have been so pleased with MCH, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a caring, small and diverse school community.
