On this trip to Niagara I want to experience great food like everyone else but I can't bear to bring him to a Michelin star place and expect him to like it. Omg thank you niagara on the lake tourist board or FB analytics for sharing me this wonderful teaching restaurant. From Tues-Fri this restaurant is open for a couple hours at lunch to teach students all parts of running a restaurant. Once at your table you can see how the kitchen is going on with cameras there. Presentation is beautiful and the food is divine. Being a teaching restaurant made me feel more comfortable about having the kiddo there. The lunch crowd was mostly retired folks and college staff. The quality of food is epic for $50 Canadian dollars. And you can get a sample local wine flight for $16 Canadian? I loved everything. I do recommend the toffee pudding for dessert. It's a regular dessert item and you can taste the bourbon. Special thanks to Victor the manager/ instructor that went the extra distance to suggest other activities to do/ eat in the neighborhood. High ceiling, cosy ambiance and excellent friendly service by all the staffs and our waitress Nicole was amazing! The chef at this restaurant are from Niagara College and the staffs are also students from the school either doing hospitality or other programs. Having said that, I was going to go to Pellar for dinner, but I wanted to try this restaurant out. The wine and beer were brewed by the Niagara College students. Best part is for $15, you can try sample flights of wine and beer! One of the specials for tonight was the Pan seared Lake Erie Pickerel $27 and the best part was I can add on cod for the side, not just any cod, but Fogo Island cod for $9. I love Fogo Island cod. I am greedy so I end up ordering two different types of fish Amazing!!! The potatoes for the side was nicely done, not too soft or hard and you can taste the skin. Very tasty! My husband loved his dry-aged rib-eye. It was sooo good. For the dessert, the sticky toffee pudding with Salted Pecan Caramel sauce ($9) -Shortbread, Cranberry Orange Vanilla Bean Ice Cream was beautifully presented. So many layers and different texture going on. Beautifully done. I ordered the Chocolate Banana Tart, but I definitely enjoyed my husband's sticky toffee pudding! We got a chance to meet the chef Christian who is a student at the Niagara College, he is full of passion in his cooking and he took pride on what he put on every plate! Wow. Wow. Wow. We were bowled over at the quality of the food, drink, and service here. Four of us ate lunch on the patio on a recent Friday afternoon. School is out, so the campus was fairly quiet. We enjoyed the gentle breezes and the attention to landscaping on the Niagara College campus. No worries about parking if the school is in session; there is a dedicated parking area for restaurant patrons close by. The menu is not huge, but varied so that there will be something that appeals to all. We started with a delicious cream of parsnip soup--I can honestly say I've never seen that on a menu before! That with the delicious freshly baked bread basket ($3) with honey butter--that and a glass of white wine and I could've stopped there. (but we didn't, of course!) Next came an appetizer of butternut squash sticks-in tempura batter and deep-fried with an accompanying aioli. Again--ever see that on a menu? Great for sharing and we wiped up the extra aioli with the bread. Entrees included a burger, a crispy chicken sandwich and a PLT Burger (burger with a slice of peameal bacon on top). All very good and served with freshly made french fries. Accompanying all this good food were beers brewed at Niagara College by students in their brewing program. Wines made at NC were also available but alas, I was the designated driver. They also now have a distillery on campus producing spirits. Did we have room for dessert? No way. So we ordered some anyway. Hubby had a delicious sticky toffee pudding with salted pecan bourbon caramel, served with vanilla ice cream, I had a scoop of the seasonal flavour of ice cream (vanilla rhubarb) our guests shared an absolutely beautiful dessert of a Chocolate Banana Tart (shortbread crust, spiced ganache, milk chocolate banana mousse, NC honey sauteed bananas, puffed quinoa crisp in dark chocolate). Overall, this was a good experience as a group. Go in with the right expectations and it won't disappoint. The main appeal of Benchmark is 1) Supporting students and providing them experience, 2) Getting local food, and 3) Affordability of a meal given the high upcharge dining at wineries and other restaurants in Niagara. I ordered the Fogo Island Cod as my main, a little on the buttery side but filling with no complaints on flavor. Burgers also looked good. I will say that the pizza looked and tasted disappointing as per my party (i.e. personal sized pizza and nothing standout for topping/flavor). The major downside is the LONG wait for food, especially if you have a larger group and even when it's not busy. We went for a Saturday dinner, and despite tables being about 70% full, it took about an hour before we got something to eat. If you are starving and alone, this is not the place to be. You do have to be understanding that this is most likely because the students are still learning. A side comment that while service was good, it could be a little awkward at times. The server for example had to really reach between people and into the table to take the wine glasses away which were not used. Usually this is something that is more discreet and smoother with more experienced servers. A bit pricey for lunch but the food was served in generous portions and, well, at a culinary school, plated pretty well (how can you mess up plating a shaved beef sandwich with fries?). If you are in a hurry, maybe you should try the "to go" option, we didn't and it seemed like we waited a while, in the hot sun (no reservations) for our food. My 30 minute lunch quickly turned to 1+. Arriving on a weekday for lunch and this place was packed. We decided to order their Trust Me ($25 includes a choice of beer/wine from Niagara College winery/brewery) to share and a la carte Buttermilk Fried Chicken ($12). Service was definitely a miss. We waited almost 20 minute in between appetizer and main course. And ended up our orders was messed up and the kitchen never even prepared our food. Our lunch experience lasted almost 90 minute, not really acceptable for lunch! Food wise was quite disappointing too... Trust Me ($25) Trout Mousse with Goat Cheese on a Flatbread - A-OK aside from the flatbread being really greasy Braised Beef with Homemade Pasta - Beef was a little tough but acceptable. The pasta was cooked al dente. However, there was not much taste to it.. bland... Pina Colada Gelato - The best part of the meal, smooth and creamy..... My Buttermilk Chicken was overcooked and dry and the batter was salty and bitter. If I going to grade Benchmark, my lunch experience would just be a barely passing grade C-. Outstanding. We chose this place on the spur of the moment. It was easy to see why reservations are recommended even for lunch. The only drawback to this place is that making a reservation is a challenge. When you call the main number you are forced to endure the college's entirely unhelpful voice (non) recognition system. It took me four attempts to reach a human who could actually make the reservation. The resto is gorgeous as are the surrounding gardens, all windows and wisteria. Free parking for resto patrons. Our server Nathan was a treat. He worked with the kitchen to make recommendations that met my dietary restrictions. I settled on the tempura butternut squash ($8), bread basket ($3), Ontario mixed greens ($8) and Château des Charmes rosé ($6). Loved it all. Might ask them to leave off the honey on the tempura next time. My dining companion had the Benchmark burger ($19). Good burger, but slightly overpriced. We shared the sparkling Tableau water ($3), the proceeds of which go to student scholarships. Can't wait to return. Highly recommended. read more

It was just okay. When we walked in they said that all tables were booked buy they squeezed us in. There were still tables left. Wine was good, and decent prices since wineries are near by. We had Arctic char and rib eye which were good. Their signature bouillabaisse was terrible! It looked good on yelp but their salmon was spoiled and sword fish was very fishy like it hasn't been cleaned and sauce was just cream. the table next to me was looking over at ours because waiter was recommending it but I wanted to scream DONT GET IT. the salad was good and the trout kale appetizer was great! Dessert was not impressive: creme brûlée was great but glutin free Black Forest cake and apple tart not so good. HOWEVER, you *will* need a reservation which you can do online the night before you head down! Atmosphere was nice and accommodating. If you're in the area anyway, try calling them to see if they have a spot! 2.5/5 - non-prix fixe menu items. I'm disappointed to say, but the best thing I ate was probably their Ploughman's Lunch which is literally a charcuterie platter. Based on the server's suggestion, I ordered the House-made Fettuccine with Kale Pesto ($12/13), but it was completely INEDIBLE. Noodles were undercooked and underseasoned, so I felt as though I was eating raw, chewy dough AND a pretty large portion of it! :p When the server came to check-in on us, I had to send it back because I couldn't eat anymore of it. (I had maybe 2 small forks of it and gave some to my brother, in which he agreed with me about the super-el dente-ness of the noodles.) I did feel bad, but the server took it away and told me I could replace it with someone else on the menu. So I ordered the Winemaker's Stew ($14) which was slightly more edible, but not enjoyable. (I would NOT order this again.) The stew was super dark, but did not taste rich. Lacked depth and again, seasoning. Chunks of beef were hard and overcooked. I did try the items on the prix fixe menu ($25/3 course lunch) and I found the salad, pheasant, & desserts tastier than what I ordered. Would've been nice if the prix fixe menu INCLUDED a coffee/tea. It just seems like a nice touch! Beer/Wine Flights ($12/4 samples) - Most of the wines that my bro chose were gross, too sharp/acidic/young, needs to be aged more. Beers faired better. Decent value as an alcoholic accompaniment with a meal! I wouldn't hesitate to visit again, especially with people from out-of-town, but I would NOT recommend the pasta! Benchmark is located at Niagara College, and the food is prepared and served by students. Access from the QEW is very easy; parking on the college grounds is complimentary. Roasted Beet Salad (beet puree, goat's cheese crumble, arugula, candied walnuts) did not have much flavor due to insufficient amount of dressing. The Seared Digby Scallops (cauliflower, bacon, potato coins, lemon caper butter sauce) was nicely presented and tasted alright. The Benchmark Dark Chocolate Tart (caramel crunch layer, candied pecans, cranberry apple sauce, mocha ice cream) was very sweet, the tart was dense and hard, presentation was a bit lacking, and by the time the dessert was served, the mocha ice cream was already half melted. Our server was shy and her voice was barely audible, but other than that service was fine during our visit. Small-ish restaurant at the Niagara College across from the new outlet mall. Went here with my parents on a Saturday for lunch. Everyone had reservations -- I wouldn't wing it. Several families had young children including my little one. There is a patio for sitting outdoors if you like but it was too hot when we went. They offer student brewed beers and wines. You can sample them in flights and they are also available for purchase around the corner from the restaurant if you like. They also offered a local craft beer and a selection of local wines. Deep fried apples were more dessert-like than app like but were tasty enough with the dusting of cinnamon sugar. Polenta fries were different but somewhat underwhelming. Lamb Merguez Sausage Pappardelle was filling and savoury. The Seared Digby Scallops were delicious and seared perfectly. The Tandoori & Ice Syrup glazed Atlantic Salmon was the most disappointing for me. I did not find the combination of the curry grains and the salmon very appealing. Although the raita was delicious with the salmon. Their take on tiramisu was the star of the show. Fresh fruit and Riesling soaked lady fingers. I came here for an August long weekend Saturday Brunch and it was awesome. This is probably one of the best kept secrets of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The restaurant is run by the culinary students and everything from food to service was excellent that morning. The restaurant is beautiful to boot, you feel like you're in, what could have been, a conservatory. Lots of gardens and a greenhouse right by the restaurant. The food was plated well for the main course while the soup, salads, and desserts presented in the centre, buffet-style, was just as good. They use as much of their own local produce as possible and made their own ice cream/sorbets for the dessert. I'm sad that I was actually too full from the salad and main to sample all of their desserts on offer. Definitely one of my go-to places in the area. Support the culinary students! read more

The only reason Benchmark gets an extra star than the lowest possible mark is because it is quite a beautiful setting inside (outside - there was so much dust and noise from construction, literally 5 meters from the entrance). I ordered the Cobbs salad, which is dressed with wayyyy too much vinegar to the point where my mouth was numb. The Benchmark burger was generous in portion, but quite dry. The side salad that came with the burger was so bitter it was inedibble! and when I pointed it out to the server, she simply said "it is bitter greens, so you konw...". You have no idea how bitter it was... She did replace the salad with a soup, which was actually not bad. Overall, the experience was not an enjoyable one. I think it is important for culinary students to start somewhere, but at the same time, this was a little too much for me. I think I probably will visit again just to support the students, but I hope that I will have a different experience next time. read more

$4 pints of craft beer at the campus restaurant?! All my campus restaurant offered was overpriced beer and reheated chicken fingers, what a rip off! Benchmark is a great concept, it's a restaurant run by Niagara College where all the food is cooked by students of their culinary arts program. It's a great way to give these students some cooking experience in a professional kitchen. My friends and I recently came here for lunch while on a day trip to Niagara-on-the-lake. The menu is short and sweet consisting of a single page of options all seemingly classics with a bit of a gourmet twist. On this day I opted for the "trust us" prix fix menu which is a three course meal accompanied by a pint of beer or glass of wine (beers brewed by Niagara College brewing program, wines made by their winemaking program), all this for $25. My courses went as follows: Appetizer: Trout mouse with goat cheese served up on a fried pita. The mouse was the best part of this dish, delicate texture with a great trout flavour. I felt the goat cheese was put on top of the mouse a bit too liberally and merely overpowered the dish, while the fired pita was greasy and a bit off-putting. Main course: Handmade spaghetti with beef, portobello mushrooms in some sort of oil based sauce (I forget the exact description). This dish was a bit of a train wreck, the whole dish was bland, and the beef was dry and tasteless. The only redeeming quality was that the spaghetti was cooked perfectly and had a great texture. Dessert: Pina Colada sorbet served in a martini glass was absolutely delicious. Great texture on the sorbet, amazing fruity flavour, without being too sweet. A perfect end to the meal I also managed to snag a piece of my friends buttermilk fried chicken which was too salty and slightly burnt, another fail. The restaurant itself is gorgeous with floor to ceiling windows looking out on to a greenhouse and some beautiful greenery. The service on this occasion was VERY slow; it took us over an hour to eat our lunch which is simply unacceptable. I was excited to see what the culinary students could do but I left feeling a bit sad as they were clearly missing some fundamentals of cooking that I would expect most culinary students to have (i.e seasoning, not burning fried chicken etc). The prices are incredibly reasonable with no dishes topping $20 and most of them being under $15. The portion sizes were pretty generous, even on my three course prix-fix; the beer and wine are unbelievably inexpensive and local! (made on site at the college). Would I come back to benchmark? It's hard to say; while the food was a disappointment it would be tough to not pop in for a $4 pint of beer. $4 beer on campus, I still can't get over it, can I enrol ASAP?! *2.5 stars read more

Many of my reviews tend to be on the high side. I guess I have been fortunate to have some well prepared meals at several restaurants. Benchmark is the restaurant at Niagara College where students can demonstrate and produce their best work in a restaurant setting. This is fine dining at affordable prices. Many of the main courses go between $10 and $13. I had buttermilk chicken which was prepared quite well - it was lightly breaded with some spice, perhaps a hint of curry. The Trout Muniere was quite good as well. The were other groups in attendance - including a 20 people on a winery tour and bachelorette party all wearing their best with tiaras. Quite the range of clientele. This was the second visit to the Benchmark and both experiences were outstanding. Loved it. First visit the other day and was happy that I finally got to go. This is the teaching restaurant at Niagara College. The students have either front of house roles or back of house. You feel gratified knowing that you are getting a terrific meal while contributing to the education of a young person who is studying hospitality. I had a dish of Digby scallops, charred cauliflower, baby potatoes and small rashers of bacon. Delicious. I don't think that I have every had seafood that was so fresh! If you're expecting high end dining at cheap prices, this isn't the place to go. But if you go with the attitude that proceeds of your meal are going right back to the department, you'll understand why the price point is good. read more

Replacing the Niagara Culinary Institute restaurant, Benchmark is an exciting and new showcase of NC's culinary programs and students. The food was amazing. We were treated to a Sweet potato ravioli with Bison meat. The Buttermilk Chicken was not like your traditional U.S. southern but great flavor. I just came here for dinner with my family and I have no idea why everyone is rating this place so highly. I think there needs some more practice at school first before they come here. I get that this place is where people in the culinary school go and practice their skills here, so here are the issues: 1) Service - I don't know if this is something they learn in school but their service is not good. I'm not expecting much because I know they're still learning but if you shouldn't have to ask for bread multiple times and also not have our dishes removed when we're done with the food! The server was horrible, she always tried to ignore us and had to wave her down each time. This place isn't big but somehow she was able to walk around to the other tables she doesn't serve so she doesn't have to see how everything is going. 2) Food - The mussels with white wine sauce was waaaay too strong. Whoever made this needs to fix it asap. The masala stuffed chicken dish was horrible! It literally tasted like cardboard within the first bite I took. It was gross. The soup of the day, melon gazpachon, was gross too. The salad they had with the sunchokes and hazelnut dressing was pretty good along with the pork loin and cornish hen dishes, which is why I gave this place an extra star. 3) Deans List Wine - Even though they say it's good, it's not. Not one bit, don't get this. I should have known not to listen to the server who didn't even try the wine! Overall, I'm not going to come back and don't recommend it to anyone. read more

The online reservation site showed no tables available but when I called they were able to seat us after 30 minutes! There were plenty of tables available when we arrived (Friday evening). The menu looked really interesting and we got the local wine flight (Niagara college), tempura with Ontario apples (really tasty) and I got the vegetarian pasta. They were flexible enough to make the pasta vegan with a tomato sauce. The servers were all college kids. There was also an older lady around whom I called the 'teacher' in my head, she was really sweet to us but the servers seemed slightly terrified around her ;-) At the end of the meal we were presented with a 'report card' where we could give feedback and grade every aspect of our dining experience. Once upon a time, I ate at benchmark... (a month ago). Amazing food! Amazing service! We had pizza and the chicken sandwich. We then decided to eat there again on a whim. In an attempt to trying a few new things we ordered the ancient grain salad. It was bland, blah, and blasée. Our server asked how our food was before we attempted the salt-less salad. The rest of our food was great! But after we finished our meal except for the salad we explained that it was not up to snuff. The several servers we dealt with became saltier than our salad ever could have been. After some severely awkward remarks... they finally took the salad off of our bill as we witnessed them talk behind our backs. Definitely one of the best value finer dining options in the NOL area. I had the veal chop and my wife had the lambchop and they were both very well cooked. The vegetables that came with the mains were also well cooked. The appetizer salads were pretty good as well, but probably just a small step below the entrees. They serve some beer and wine that is also made on-site. The atmosphere is not bad, but it doesn't really have the ambience of a high end restaurant. I've heard Benchmark being a good restaurant and the food I ordered was good, but that's where it stops. We were a group of 25 ladies and we got a restricted menu. We were probably the only people in the restaurant. There were maybe two more tables of two and one table of four. They were well aware of our coming as the reservation was in place a good week before the event. The menu consisted of salad, one soup,a chicken burger, two pizzas, a fish and that's about it. It took 50 minutes to serve us and we asked for bread to tie us over till our food comes and cost for that was $3 per small loaf. The service was extremely poor. When we mentioned that the bread should be on the house because of the long wait, we were told that's not how they do it. The Chequers were handed out before we finished our meal. I had ordered a small dessert (one scoop of ice cream) which took 20 minutes to get to me, but the check was there well before hand. The server wanted me to pay before I got my dessert and I said I would pay when I was finished my dessert. Server came back for me to pay before I finished. You may not get your food in a hurry, but they sure want your money in a hurry. I would never go back because of the service and the rudeness. And you still pay top dollar. read more

My partner and I had a wonderful dinner here. Our server was knowledgeable, genuine, and professional. It was very refreshing to be in a restaurant where the staff seemed to take great pride in their work. Our dinners were amazing. We also got a bottle of Niagara College wine complete with a student-designed label. Charming! We loved getting an amuse bouche, but it was a little heavy on the mayo. "Enough, already!" We dine here each September as part of a road trip, and restaurant changes so much from year to year you really don't know where you're going. If there's any connection to the students and faculty of Niagara College it seems to be gone. Menu is uninspired and leans each year more towards a sports bar: burger or chicken sandwich with chips, pizza are a few of the options. Three years ago we were having Eastern Canada bouillabaisse. Service is polite but slow and inattentive. Example - neither server (who took the order) nor food runner knew what dish went to which diner (of 2). That's just poor procedure or laziness - "who got the soup?" belongs at Swiss Chalet. Waiter also had zero knowledge of the wine menu which borders on shocking. To ice the cake, the staff was dragging tables and chairs around on the concrete floor with at least 20-25 people still dining, the only thing I can compare the sound to was the break up of the ship in the final scenes of "Titanic." we went here for a work luncheon, and it was great. interesting food, great atmosphere, a hidden gem for sure. oh and the pest control (a ginger cat that roams the grounds) was very friendly :D read more
