On our seven year old Shih Tsu, "Callie's birthday, the groomer at Crysler Animal Hospital discovered swollen lymph nodes. The clinic there did some blood tests and forwarded a sample to the KU Veterinary School for analysis. KU definitively affirmed lymphoma and suspected a possible cancer present. Dr. Erica Nowlin at Crysler suggested further testing at BluePearl Pet Hospital as they are an oncology hospital and would be able to confirm cancer. We easily booked an appointment and Callie was seen by Dr. Heather Heeb on Thursday 5/28/26. We were impressed with the thoroughness of the examination and testing results. We were offered a plethora of treatment options. But we came away with the realization, Callie will succumb to this disease. On Friday 5/29/26, we made two phone calls to BluePearl, leaving two voice mail messages. Neither were acknowledged nor did we receive a callback. On Monday 6/1/26 7:20 a.m. we called and again left a voicemail at the tone requesting an Rx for prednisone which Dr. Heeb had suggested for comfort. Due to the unresponsiveness we experienced, we called the Crysler Hospital at 7:24 to expedite meds, as it was obvious that Callie was in discomfort. By 8:15, Dr. Jay Schweizer called to alert us that Callie's meds were ready for pick up. Thanks so much to the caring, attentive team at Crysler for great COMMUNICATION. Below is a screenshot of the text message received from BluePearl. I would recommend an improvement in communication from the team at BluePearl regarding aftercare.

Oddly, the empathy and concern they promise were noticeably absent in my experience, but they're meticulous when it comes to charging for their services. When you go to dinner and the waiter changes mid-meal, most restaurants give you the courtesy of letting you know someone else is talking over. At Red Bridge Animal Clinic, when you call on Friday to talk to the vet who's been seeing your pet -- who you've spent thousands of dollars on with tests, x-rays and meds -- THAT'S when you learn your vet is gone. Upon learning this, I explained to the person who answered the phone that I didn't know what to do next, what to watch for, etc. like any pet parent would. She assured me there were other 3 other vets at the clinic and I would hear from one of them on Saturday. Instead I got a voice mail saying the pain meds were ready. No vet. No advice. Just another transaction. If you care about your pets, don't take them to Red Bridge Animal Clinic.

We had a life or death emergency with our Quincy…read morecat and in spite of already having a surgery in progress, this wonderful hospital let us bring him right in. Kindness was shown to us and our beloved Quincy from the time I picked up the phone until we left the office. Sadly, our cat was beyond saving, but not for lack of giving us the best care possible from the doctor and the staff. They rushed him right in and got him on oxygen, for which I am very grateful because he was suffering. It touched me that the doctor knelt down to talk to us at eye level when he was conveying his findings with the tests that were ran. He made sure we knew our options and it felt like the entire staff was grieving right there with us. Our local vet was not able to help us and I will be forever grateful to AniMed for their genuine love for our little critters and that Quincy could pass more comfortably than if he was left untreated. Furthermore, we were sent a sympathy card where the entire staff wrote a comforting message. Even though we live in Oak Grove, we would bring our new kitten into them without hesitation...they are worth the extra drive for us. Today, I had the sad task of bringing Mom's dog in to be put to sleep. This was a difficult decision for the family, but the right decision. The veterinary tech that helped me process the paperwork and prepped Poppins was outstanding. She held this little dog with so much love and care during the entire procedure. Thank you for being so remarkably kind. (I didn't hold Poppins myself because sometimes the dog has mixed feelings about me. She is definitely mom's dog.) The vet was also incredibly kind and gentle. He was familiar with our case, and gave Poppins excellent care. Thank you. I am sorry that this sad work is put upon the same good people that give so much to care for everyone's pets. This clinic has delivered excellent service at every visit over the years. We are so very grateful to have Strothertowne for Poppins. Thank you for being exceptional and kind.

The receptionists were nice and attentive and the doctor's assistant was great getting my pet ready for her annual exam. When the doctor came in she was also very nice and really wanted to know about the history of my pet. We had shots to do and another assistant came in just to try to calm my little one down (even though she didn't really need it) and massaged her head during the whole procedure. I had several questions about a potential medical concern with my pet and I was given excellent advice and she did some additional checks for me. I'll definitely be back if I continue to get this kind of service.

Between members of my family, about 10 animals are taken care of by Oak Grove. Last week, my granddog was taken in with what seemed to be a stroke and at age 15, it seemed it would be time for her to be put down. It turned out to be an inner ear/cranial problem and although very sick, we were reassured and are hopeful she will get better in about 1-2 weeks and have many more months or years to keep being a part of our family. I've seen 3 out of the 4 doctors and all are extremely sensitive and love animals. When I had to have my little dog put down due to cancer and seizures, they cried with me. She was 14. If I had something I would encourage them to improve on, it would be their kennel for boarding - they are roomy but need beds that are off the ground. This is just my opinion, I had 2 pets in boarding for 2 months due to an accident I had been in 3 years ago. They will work with you on payments are NOT a 'kill shelter'. Worst place I have ever been to. My dog had his ear hematoma drained there late last month, today…read morehe was getting the drainage tube removed and without warning Dr Gower ripped my dog's ear tube out causing my dog to scream because of the pain. He didn't even attempt to reassure my dog nor me that what he just did was fine, there was no discussion beforehand that this was what he was going to do to my dog. Pain meds were not offered either, just simply be on your way. He's an incredibly cold and unwelcoming person, and the lack of care and informed consent is appalling. They don't tend to offer pain meds nor antibiotics for after surgery either, at least none was offered when my dog initially had the tube put in. No care instructions were given at pick up either, we had to call back to make sure what to do. And when the edge of the tube in his ear started cutting into him only then did they finally give us something for him, but they didn't do anything to prevent it from continuing to cut into him. In fact the vet originally just brushed it off as being the drainage hole when it clearly wasn't. I had to take my dog to a different vet clinic shortly after the tube got ripped out to make sure he was going to actually be okay. And the vet there agreed it shouldn't have been handled like this. And unlike this clinic they constantly reassured my dog the entire time while they looked at his ear, making sure he was comfortable and cared for properly. Which because of how he was handled here, he was very nervous about people around his ear now when he never was before. They also gave us pain meds unlike here. This isn't even that much of an ask, this is standard care. Which thank you Vetco total care in Blue springs for actually caring about the animals they're trusted with. If you value your dogs comfort and health, don't go here. Even if they solve the initial problem they'll just end up making things worse and do nothing to fix it. If you have concerns they brush you off.

Senior cat died 6 hours after discharge and clinic defends care as adequate…read more I brought my 17-year-old cat to Bannister Veterinary Clinic in KC for evaluation of lethargy, difficulty walking, and weight loss. Her body temperature was recorded at 96.4°F at 3pm and 97.2°F at 4pm, which is moderate hypothermia. Bloodwork showed Stage 2 kidney disease with creatinine 2.6, BUN 69, and phosphorus 9.0. She also had anemia with a PCV of 25.35%. Physical examination showed severe weakness and mobility issues. The veterinarian consulted an internal medicine specialist hotline for guidance on my cat's case. Despite consulting with a specialist about a cat presenting with 96.4°F hypothermia, Stage 2 kidney disease, severe anemia, and unable to walk, my cat was sent home at 4pm with oral prednisolone, a long-acting pain injection that takes 7 days to take full effect, diet recommendations, and a steroid to help gain weight/fight possible lymphoma. I was never told that my cat was critically ill. I was never told that hypothermia in cats with kidney disease predicts imminent death. I was never told she could die within hours. I was given no monitoring instructions or emergency warning signs. I was never told that hospitalization or euthanasia were options I should consider. The discharge implied outpatient treatment was appropriate and that my cat had time. My cat died at home 6 hours later at approximately 10pm, unable to walk, vomiting, and in distress. A 96.4°F body temperature in a geriatric cat with kidney disease, anemia, and severe clinical signs is a medical emergency requiring hospitalization or end-of-life discussion, not outpatient management. I contacted the practice manager (who was nice enough to speak to me for over an hour) to explain this care was not adequate and requested a refund. I was told the care provided was adequate and that the internal medicine specialist had "agreed with the care given." This raises serious questions. What information was provided to the specialist? Was the 96.4°F hypothermia emphasized? Did the specialist recommend discharge with specific monitoring instructions that weren't communicated to me? Even if discharge was deemed medically appropriate, why was I never told my cat was critically ill or that death was imminent? Consulting a specialist doesn't absolve the practice of the duty to communicate honestly with pet owners. Whether or not a specialist agreed with discharge, I should have been clearly told my cat's condition was critical, that death could occur within hours to days, what signs warranted emergency care, and that hospitalization or euthanasia were options. Adequate care for a critically hypothermic cat dying of multi-organ failure is not a steroid and sent home without warning. Adequate care would have been hospitalization for IV fluids, warming, and monitoring, or honest discussion that my cat was actively dying and humane euthanasia should be considered, or at minimum, clear communication that death was likely imminent. I was robbed of the opportunity to make an informed decision about my cat's final hours. I thought she had time. I believed outpatient treatment was appropriate because that's what the discharge implied. Instead, she died in distress at home 6 hours later while I watched helplessly, not understanding what was happening or that this was the end. The veterinarian failed to recognize or communicate the severity of my cat's condition. The practice manager defended this failure as adequate care. If "adequate" means sending a critically ill, hypothermic cat home to die without warning the owner, then we have very different definitions of adequate. I trusted this practice with my cat's life. They failed her, and they failed me. I cannot recommend Bannister Vet Clinic to anyone who expects honest communication and appropriate emergency care, especially if you have a senior animal.
