Strothertowne Pet Hospital is run by an old hand at veterinary medicine, Dr. Warren B. Jones, DVM. Dr. Jones is our vet of choice for our Great Danes. I have been using Dr. Jones since he first came to Kansas City and worked for another vet, and then followed him to his own hospital when he began it. Warren has worked closely with me through small issues such as standard immunizations up to and including life-or-death emergency surgeries.
Dr. Jones truly cares about his patients, and goes above and beyond the call of duty to give his patients quality of life. I have seen far too many veterinarians whose only purpose is to wring a few more dollars out of a pet owner, and who really don't care about the animal involved. I have worked with Dr. Jones through the night as he fought to save a dog of mine, only to see him start work at normal office hours and work all day, without missing a beat.
Warren is one of my personal heroes and a true humanitarian. If it were in my power, I'd give Dr. Jones a medal for what he does, but he's so humble I doubt he would accept it. His staff are simply the very best! I breed Great Danes, and always send my customers to Strothertowne Pet Hospital. Whether I need routine exams for a litter of pups, or have a life-threatening problem, Dr. Jones does the job right, and charges far less than most vets.
Dr. Jones has saved the lives of many of my Great Danes over the years I have used his services, and I know him to be a fabulous surgeon. One pup was misdiagnosed by two different vets before seeing Dr. Jones. One vet said the pup had hip dysplasia and wanted to put him down without even doing x-rays. The other vet claimed the pup had a spinal disorder, and wanted to put him down. Again, without x-rays. I rushed the pup to meet Dr. Jones at his office, before normal business hours, on a Saturday. Dr. Jones took the pup, placed him on the ground, and the pup's rear legs immediately collapsed under him. Dr. Jones felt the pup's hips and back with his hands, and told me that all that was wrong, was the pup had a soft-tissue injury to his right rear knee. Dr. Jones kept this pup for four days, and then called me personally to tell me he was fine, and he could come home. That pup would have been dead if I had listened to those other vets! Not only did Dr. Jones save him, but that pup is now a grandfather, and has never had a problem in his knee since!
He has also helped a few of my dogs cross over the Rainbow Bridge to Valhalla. One, was my elderly girl Leysa. She was in very bad shape, and could not be moved. She needed to be euthanized. On the day in question, we had a horrible snowstorm. Not only could I not carry this giant dog alone to load her in our truck, I couldn't even get my truck out of the driveway. Dr. Jones and his lovely wife drove to my house in his truck, and helped Leysa pass over and ended her pain. We loaded Leysa into his truck, and he took care of her cremation.
Most recently, our eldest boy Thor had an inoperable problem, and also needed euthanized. I took Thor in to Strothertowne, and Dr. Jones sat in the floor with me as I held my giant old baby and let him know I loved him. When I was ready, Dr. Jones gave Thor the injection. Thor passed in my arms, and I am not ashamed to say I cried. Dr. Jones was every bit as sad as I was, and it showed. Each time we have lost a dog, we always get a very nice card of condolence in the mail afterwards. Dr. Jones takes the time to personally express his sorrow in his own handwriting.
Dr. Jones is a pillar of the community, and a family man with dogs of his own, so he knows what we all go through. He doesn't drive a Mercedes Benz, he drives a pickup truck. He is humble to a fault. I have personally witnessed his acts of charity, and even participated in one, and have benefited from his acts of kindness personally.
