Senior cat died 6 hours after discharge and clinic defends care as adequate. I brought my 17-year-old cat to Bannister Veterinary Clinic in KC for evaluation of lethargy, difficulty walking, and weight loss. Her body temperature was recorded at 96.4°F at 3pm and 97.2°F at 4pm, which is moderate hypothermia. Bloodwork showed Stage 2 kidney disease with creatinine 2.6, BUN 69, and phosphorus 9.0. She also had anemia with a PCV of 25.35%. Physical examination showed severe weakness and mobility issues. The veterinarian consulted an internal medicine specialist hotline for guidance on my cat's case. Despite consulting with a specialist about a cat presenting with 96.4°F hypothermia, Stage 2 kidney disease, severe anemia, and unable to walk, my cat was sent home at 4pm with oral prednisolone, a long-acting pain injection that takes 7 days to take full effect, diet recommendations, and a steroid to help gain weight/fight possible lymphoma. I was never told that my cat was critically ill. I was never told that hypothermia in cats with kidney disease predicts imminent death. I was never told she could die within hours. I was given no monitoring instructions or emergency warning signs. I was never told that hospitalization or euthanasia were options I should consider. The discharge implied outpatient treatment was appropriate and that my cat had time. My cat died at home 6 hours later at approximately 10pm, unable to walk, vomiting, and in distress. A 96.4°F body temperature in a geriatric cat with kidney disease, anemia, and severe clinical signs is a medical emergency requiring hospitalization or end-of-life discussion, not outpatient management. I contacted the practice manager (who was nice enough to speak to me for over an hour) to explain this care was not adequate and requested a refund. I was told the care provided was adequate and that the internal medicine specialist had "agreed with the care given." This raises serious questions. What information was provided to the specialist? Was the 96.4°F hypothermia emphasized? Did the specialist recommend discharge with specific monitoring instructions that weren't communicated to me? Even if discharge was deemed medically appropriate, why was I never told my cat was critically ill or that death was imminent? Consulting a specialist doesn't absolve the practice of the duty to communicate honestly with pet owners. Whether or not a specialist agreed with discharge, I should have been clearly told my cat's condition was critical, that death could occur within hours to days, what signs warranted emergency care, and that hospitalization or euthanasia were options. Adequate care for a critically hypothermic cat dying of multi-organ failure is not a steroid and sent home without warning. Adequate care would have been hospitalization for IV fluids, warming, and monitoring, or honest discussion that my cat was actively dying and humane euthanasia should be considered, or at minimum, clear communication that death was likely imminent. I was robbed of the opportunity to make an informed decision about my cat's final hours. I thought she had time. I believed outpatient treatment was appropriate because that's what the discharge implied. Instead, she died in distress at home 6 hours later while I watched helplessly, not understanding what was happening or that this was the end. The veterinarian failed to recognize or communicate the severity of my cat's condition. The practice manager defended this failure as adequate care. If "adequate" means sending a critically ill, hypothermic cat home to die without warning the owner, then we have very different definitions of adequate. I trusted this practice with my cat's life. They failed her, and they failed me. I cannot recommend Bannister Vet Clinic to anyone who expects honest communication and appropriate emergency care, especially if you have a senior animal. read more

On September the 13th 2021, my Chihuahua was hacking profusely so I walked her in to Bannister Vet for treatment.  I was prescribed two injections one was Cerenia and the other was Convenia.  These two injections along with office visit cost a total of $172.25  I was given no diagnosis and was told if this did not work my pet may need X-rays.  My pet hacked the entire night.  The next day I took her back and received an X-ray which totaled $195.00. I also received a dosage of the same medication in pill form that did not work on last visit(Cerenia).  The grand total of this office visit was $223.50. As we went over X-rays,the doctor said the Liver was enlarged and there were some irregular shapes inside the stomach.  After my appointment, I received an estimate of $670.00 for Ultrasound and TBF07 Total Body Function. I spent $395.75 with no diagnosis only devastating news about my dogs enlarged liver. I had another appointment that evening with Blue Springs Animal Hospital at 5pm.  My Veterinarian diagnosed my dog within 15 minutes with upper respiratory infection and the total cost was just $85.00.  I had my Veterinarian to review my X-Rays and she said there is nothing wrong with my pet's X-rays. read more

The best! I took in my cat to get shots, it's walk in and there was hardly any wait. You can take your pet in anytime. $40 for me. Then I also took my fluffy cat to get a haircut. He was not happy about it but the groomer treated Cloud so well! Perfect first shave. The doctors are loving and caring and it was a great experience BUT EXPENSIVE $75 grooming. read more

Very very unprofessional the owner herself refused a animal knowing it was dying and they could have saved it or at least tried but she wanted to go home early instead so she just sent the animal out the door to die, reminder this was an hour before close and pet was montaged as a 3 when the other two were a 1, literally sent her out the door to die. Don't bring your pets here please, if they truly loved animals they wouldn't have sent one home to die without even trying. read more

Been coming here a year and have countless terrible experiences. Extremely overpriced. Very disorganized. Place is practically in a shack. They left a message on my phone saying my cats' meds were ready, i went to get them on a Friday, then they told me they wouldn't be ready until Monday. I came back on Monday and was then told they wouldn't be ready until the following WEEK. they were antibiotics so my cats' infections just came back thanks to Bannister. Then they tried to prescribe one of my cats meds that they had never even seen but thought that they had??? I'm blown away by the level of disorganization. read more

Have been a regular for years, love this Vet! We recently moved and decided to try another Vet closer to our new home, big mistake! They had mold on the ceiling! So when my little Daisy fell 14 feet off the deck after chasing a cat the only place I would take her was here, and I feel better knowing the Vet paid extra attention to every part of her making sure she had no broken bones. 30 minutes, a bottle of steroids for inflammation, and $39 later, I'm one happy owner! I will be making the 30 minute drive from now on for even the smallest things like her yearly rabies shot! read more

Went to this vet on a referrral from a friend. I called and was told there was a specialist there that could help me. The clinic is not close to me but I decided to take a chance and see if this vet could help. Once I got there I was told that the dr only saw dogs with this specialty problem. That would have been helpful information before driving over there. I was referred to a specialist which is very expensive. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I was charged $38.50 for a 5 minute conversation with the vet. read more

Absolutely do not use their grooming here. they completely screwed up my dogs hair, did not listen to my instructions or the written instructions, and their response to that was So sorry, just take him somewhere else to be groomed. Horrible place, poor customer service and obviously poor grooming. Never, ever use again. Told them wanted pappion cut, his ear hair, tail hair and top of his head hair were all cut. read more

After discussing options, we decided to run blood work and ultimately to try some antibiotics and other meds to see if she improved. I have brought my kitten here several times now. The staff is always very friendly, and their prices are about as low as you can get. Honestly, my only issues were the fact that it's difficult to get in because it's strictly walkins only and if I walk in and it's too busy, they won't take me. I would just like the ability to schedule so I know when things will be and I won't have to drive all the way back home. Another issue I had was that they DO schedule surgery services. My cat needed to be neutered and I called for 3 weeks several times a week to try to get him scheduled but unfortunately they never had the schedule ready, and they never called me back, so I took him to a different vet. When I took him to the other vet the vet noticed his paperwork said he was a canine and that he potentially got the canine rabies vaccine. That seems like ignorance to me, not something I will risk again. It's a shame though because I really did like how nice everyone was! read more

So I took my dogs to be boarded there plus vaccinations, one to be fixed, and a check up on the other. After a discussion with the Dr, I authorized her to do a blood draw and antibiotic. She said that there was blood in his fur. She wrote down blood in stool and gave him 3 antibiotics and added $250 more than the original agreed price and changed some of the pricing agreed on some of the services originally. We were upset about the additional charges without letting us know about the high charges when discussing the care. They didn't give us any info on what the test results were, what they found, or what we should do. We asked to speak with the Dr so finally we did. He stated he did not care for the dog and we needed to speak with the other Dr on the care. The front desk clerk called my wife a bitch multiple times in front of my children as my wife was wanting some answers and was getting none. She smarted off many times at my wife with every question she asked and asked my wife if she was this bitchy to everyone. Also, we found out eventually that he had an infection which he was fine when he went there to be boarded so he got it from that stupid place then they charged us for the antibiotics for the infection. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB and other agencies, they lost my business forever along with family members that bring their animals there and everyone I can tell to keep away from them. They hide charges, change charges, give dogs infections while there, then charge you for the cure after the infection, then they don't care on top of that. Horrible, horrible place. DO NOT GO THERE!! Also, both dogs were supposed to get groomed and one of them had matted hair in several places in his furr so they done a horrible job with that as well. read more
