The one star reviews are 100% right. I will never take another pet here again. This location was bought out by a large conglomerate and the service will never be the same. The old reviews, that are shockingly allowed to remain, are from a time when this was a veterinarian, locally owned company. The vets are not the same, the service and pet care is definitely not the same and the focus, profit over client, and most importantly, PET WELL BEING, is not the focus. This is happening nationwide. Find another local vet who truly cares for your furry family member. My experience was awful - my cat was unnecessarily medicated with something I highly suspected was not needed and did not solve the illness. I was treated very rudely, my word against theirs since it was just me and the vet, and because I could not get anywhere else, I allowed it. Never again. I will never go back here again. read more

Our experience here was not good. We waited in the lobby for over 25 minutes with no communication. When the vet finally came in, she barely examined my dog before saying they couldn't remove the cyst because they weren't equipped. No advice, no options, nothing to help my dog feel better while we waited for a different appointment somewhere else. The tone was rushed and short the entire time. My husband decided to purchase insurance for our dog due to moving we had to rehome him and we tried calling to cancel it and the lady said we couldn't until the contract was up so I was okay with it until I noticed the were not only charging my card once but 3 times a month!!!! Took my dog in for lump/bump we found. Pretty sure it was a fatty cyst but wanted to be sure. Called yesterday, got in today at 11. Arrived about 10 minutes early and was out about 11:30. That included tech, relief doctor, Dr. Ramsey (she was amazing) , a needle draw and results all the while they had an emergency going on. We have never had a problem. Hope we never do. Wouldn't trust any other hospital with our fur baby's health. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would l. Long story short my dog had a mass in her bladder. That they told me based off were it was it wasn't cancer. Problem kept persisting resulting in multiple trips back and forth to them costing me $1200 + dollars. Went to another vet and they said the mass was cancer and words from the doctors mouth "idk how they didn't find this to be cancer" they did the same tests they did. Since it was caught so late there was nothing I could do and my dog passed days later. Worst vet ever. read more

I could write a novel on the bad experiences we've had here, but I'll only share one part... Today for the 4th time we were given the wrong dose (overdose) of flea/tick/heartworm. Not the first, but the FOURTH time. I randomly caught it one time and I think all but once since then they have given the wrong dose... so who knows how many times that has happened before we noticed. I even spoke to the dr and the manager, yet it still happened again today and tbh it didn't seem like they cared one bit when I complained over the phone. We've also had to question other medication doses as they sometimes don't match the manufacturers suggested dosage based on weight. There's a lot more that we are beyond unhappy with or disturbed by in addition to the above but we will leave it at that. I will say, Dr. Winkley has been the lone bright spot there. She's good and we were always happy with her. read more

I brought my dog in after he collapsed at home. At first I thought it was good I brought him here. They diagnosed him with a heart condition and provided medications. They also told me they couldn't say for sure but wouldn't doubt if his condition was the result of us not taking good enough care of his teeth. They wanted to do more measures that cost a lot more money so we decided to see how he did with the meds. When I finally got him to take the meds, he started to show some improvement, but the next day he started experiencing serious pain. I had a follow up visit scheduled for the following week, but called several days in a row because of his intense pain. They told me to try a heating pad, and the vet said they couldn't do anything without more extensive exams. Finally after 6 days of him suffering in pain I took him in for his follow up appointment with a second vet at Southside. They saw that he was clearly in pain but said there was nothing they could do without the other exams and about $450. I asked for any sort of prognosis, they said "well, I don't think he'll die overnight." I asked about pain meds so they gave me some. The meds worked for about 2 hours, then my dog was suffering again. Finally, the next morning I did what I should've done a week prior, and I drove 40 mins away to take my dog to his previous vet to see if they could help. As soon as I walked in, they told me my dog was severely dehydrated to a point that could not have happened overnight so that was missed at the appointment the day before. They gave him fluids, they looked over the paperwork and medications and told me the dosage for one of his medications was 4 times higher than it should be and was causing some of his issues. Neither one of the vets at Southside said anything about the dosage of the medication, and the second vet never said anything about him being dehydrated. Thankfully, his old vet changed the dosage, did a simple test to check his kidney function (which were functioning fine) and said a complete blood work at this time would be a waste of time and money due to the dehydration. He gave him new pain medications along with the new dosage of other pills, and from about 2 hours after that appointment, my dog is no longer suffering 6 days after that appointment. The heart condition is still there, but at least now he can live comfortably until the end when after our visits to Southside we thought we would have to put him down last week due to his non stop, intense pain. I had read the reviews of this place and thought they would be helpful, and I even thought they were helpful on the first day, but I was wrong, and my dog suffered in pain needlessly for days because of it. My impression is that they care more about the money than the needs of your pet and though they blamed me for the onset of his heart condition, it was their practices that made him suffer for almost a week, and nearly killed him prematurely. I'm so glad I decided to take my dog back to his old vet when I did or I think we would have a totally different outcome today. read more

Don't take your pets here. They care only about money not the pets. I had been taking my dog here and he was on medication that is controlled so I can only get it refilled a certain amount of times. I received a notice that in order for a refill I had to go in and take an expensive blood test to get it refilled. My insurance only covers this once a year but in order for this vet to give me another refill I had to pay for the test again even though he had one 6 months ago and was doing great on the meds. I felt I was trapped my dog needed this medication and I was almost completely out so I made the appointment to get it. I was very upset but my dogs life is in jeopardy without the medication. I went for my appointment on time and then was sent to one of the rooms and was told the vet was finishing up a wound care. I figured ok about little wait. I was left back there for over 45 minutes nobody came to check on me they just left me there. I needed my dogs meds so I started searching vets that I could get in immediately. I found Olathe West and they took me that day got the test done because he had never seen my dog and he gave me a prescription for a year. My dog has Epilepsy and takes Phenobarbital which is controlled and you can only get a months worth at a time with only a few days in between to get the refill done. read more

After our visit today for a nail trimming I have to write an update. I have talked about how wonderful Southside and Dr. Grey is with my Pugzilla, but today they just amazed me! I take Vinny to the dog park generally before taking him for his monthly nail trim. It helps run out some of the energy he uses to battle getting his nails trimmed. You wouldn't believe what a monster he becomes looking at his adorable little face! Making a long story short, we happened to find a lost dog as we were leaving the puppy park. The tags showed the dog was a Southside dog so I called them. They tried to contact the owner, but was unable to, called me back and asked me to bring the dog with me. When I arrived they called the owner again and left another message that the dog was with them. While I was back with Vinny, Dr. Schieffer came back to let me know the owner just arrived to pick up their dog. The urgency they placed on reuniting the dog with their owner was amazing! It makes me feel good knowing Vinny wears a tag with their name on it because I know if something happened and they were contacted, they would take care of my boy until I could. Vinny also wears a tag with my info. Luckily the dog today had a tag with Southside's info being he was not wearing an owners tag. Remember to keep identification tags (owner or vet) on your dog everyone, you never know when something could happen. Also, keep your contact information up to date with your vet! :) read more

We took our 13 year old mini doxie to see them on May 9th for a lump near his anal gland. We took him in and they said it was a tumor and that it is "probably benign" because it wasn't bothering him. They offered to do a slide test but told my dad (the one who took our sweet boy to the vet) that wouldn't tell us if it was cancerous or not and that was our biggest concern whether it was cancer or not. But we trusted them when they said it was "probably benign" because they see more of these than we do. From that day on his health began to decline. That following Monday, May 15th, we took him back to southside because he was not acting like himself. He wasn't eating and was very lethargic. They ran some blood tests and they said it came back pretty normal and that we can do X-rays and a pancreatitis test so we chose to do the other blood test for his pancreas. After the test was done the vet came back in and said it came back abnormal and that he has pancreatitis. Did not mention to us that pancreatitis tests can come back abnormal for multiple reasons, and we should do an ultra sound just to be safe, they just diagnosed him with pancreatitis and gave us treatment options. I looked this vet in the eyes and asked "so he's not dying right?" She looked at me and responded with "No as long as we get it treated in time" so we decided to do the hospitalization and over night treatment so he can heal faster and feel better. The next day, Tuesday, May 16th, they told us he was getting better and we can take him home. We brought him home and he still wasn't eating and he was still sleeping all the time again. We called the vet back on Wednesday, May 17th, to let her know he seemed to be getting worse and she said to bring him back in and they would give him another IV and they would just keep him until around six that evening. That night we gave him the meds they gave us and he seemed to be eating a little bit but still sleeping more than usual. Thursday, May 18th comes and our little boy is just suffering and limp in our arms, clearly not getting any better. All he can do is hide and throw up. He can't walk, eat, drink, or even go to the bathroom he is so weak. At this point we decide to take him to blue pearl where they inform us that they did an ultra sound and that his pancreas is not inflamed and that he does not have pancreatitis but he does have masses on his spleen and in his belly and told us that pancreatitis tests can come back abnormal for multiple reasons and that no matter if we had all the money in the world, they don't think they would be able to fix everything that was wrong with our sweet Jack Jack. So, southside was treating him for something he didn't even have. I have confronted Southside about this and they just continue to argue with me about how we "declined" an ultrasound when we weren't even offered one, we were offered an X-ray, not sure what good an X-ray would have done. Not only are we having to suffer the loss of one of our babies but we have the vet we were taking him to for 5 years practically blaming us for his death when they were the ones who misdiagnosed him. I do not believe the prognosis would have ended any differently BUT if southside would have properly recommended and diagnosed him, he wouldn't have had to suffer for a week. There is nothing worse than seeing your baby in pain. There is no amount of money in this world that can bring our boy back to us, but I do believe we should not have to pay for the treatment he didn't need to begin with. He is not replaceable with money or things and he will always live in our hearts but at this point we have suffered so much emotional distress from this situation with southside I would like to get that treatment money back and put it towards something that can help my family heal. They continue to argue with me about it and don't seem to care that my dog is gone forever. I have not once heard an "we're sorry for your loss" no all I've heard since I've called them a week ago about this was essentially its our fault and they did nothing wrong. read more

We have been with Southside Pet Hospital since our very first pup of 8 weeks whom is now 12 years old was brought home to us. We have 2 dogs we bring every year for their check ups. The front desk is very friendly and with the Covid currently in place they have taken all precautionary steps to assure our pets and family members are safe. We couldn't ask for a better loving, caring facility to make sure our pets are healthy and current on all their vaccinations. We will be coming here until we don't have pets to bring here any longer (which I hope never happens). read more

I have been searching for a vet in the area for about a year now and I have finally found the one! The employees were all very friendly, from the moment I set the appointment to the moment me and my pup left. The gentleman that answered the phone and set the appointment was so kind and informative through the process, making it a simple transition to get my dog ready for the appointment and making sure they had all the necessary records. When I got there, I only had to wait a few minutes until I got into a room. Then the tech came in and was open to answering any and all of my questions (and I ask a lot). She informed me of the cost of all procedures prior to doing them and explained to me the reasoning for tests, vaccinations, dental cleanings, exams and such. I look forward to working with Southside in the future with my dog and making sure that he lives the happiest and healthiest life! read more

We have been at Southside Pet Hospital for many years. Today ended that for us. I took my 10 year old lab/husky mix in for shots and to look at a paw that was bothering him. First off, the cost was going to be 2 times what other vets in the area charge. It seems we are paying dearly for their upgraded location. The technician couldn't get an accurate temperature or hear his heartbeat. The vet comes in and starts looking at him. She touched a sensitive spot so he turned his head towards her. They muzzle him (without my consent). They then struggle to hold him as he doesn't like being muzzled. I asked them to stop as the technician had no control of his head or body. It was unsafe. They told me he needed sedated and I said no. I have had this dog since he was a puppy. We take him to pet days at my kids school because he is so gentle. Yet this vet and the tech couldn't manage. When I said I wanted to talk to one of the other vets in the office, the vet then threatened to cal animal control on me because he is behind on his rabies (which is why we were there...). She was upset because I wanted to know the breakdown of costs. She was offended because our local shelter offers vaccine clinics at a reasonable cost and we go there typically. Completely unprofessional and uncalled for. She actually was yelling at me (yes, I yelled back). She refused to get me my bill. I ended up leaving the room and asking to pay so I could leave. By the way, my other dog passed away last week after hours just 2 days after they had done bloodwork and said she was fine. So I was already emotional and they couldn't even be bothered to be kind and careful with my dog today. read more

I actually wondered if they even like animals. One of the techs cut my dog while trimming her nails. No apology. They appear to only be interested in money. We will NOT go back. read more

When I moved to Olathe about 10 years ago I went to several other vets before I found Southside Pet Hospital through a recommendation from a friend. The other vet's did their job but I didn't feel as if their staff really cared. Southside Pet Hospital and their staff are the best! I've taken my pets here for years. But last night was the first time I wasn't treated well. I originally had scheduled my dog his shots but he stepped on something the day before and cut open his foot. After speaking with Blue pearl er vet, they thought it would be ok to wait till his appt at Southside since it was the next day. I took him in, after looking at him they stated they would have to see him back up and all that would be $700 tonight. I don't have $700. I can't do it. They said ok we will give him antibiotics and then and btw asked me if I'd like the cone and added that to my charge. I asked about his shots and they said they can't do them since he has this going on. I didn't hear from the vet after that. I waited about 45 min. I over heard the receptionist ask about Jax and if the owner was still there. I then asked the receptionist if they were going to still do the nail clipping and she went and checked and said no, she didn't know the reason. I waited little longer then the receptionist came in and go my card for my pmt, then tHe receptionist brought my dog back out and handed me a bag of meds. Here. Thank you. I was basically abandoned by the vet. No instructions about the meds, I didn't know if he already took any while he was here. I felt while I was waiting for that long period of time, were they going to let me know what was going on? Never came in and let me know what they did. I didn't realize they gave him a sedative and that's why I waited a while. I had knocked on the vet door but they didn't answer. Nothing. I felt like because I didn't have the 700 dollars I was abandoned. I called back and left a message asking if they gave him meds while there and I received a text rather than the decency to explain what all they did and result and how he did and explain about the meds, nothing. I think I will take my business elsewhere. read more

CANNOT RECOMMEND - More than 25 years bringing our pets to this vet (my parents used them too) and am horribly disappointed in the new business philosophy. Since moving to their new location practically all of the long time staff has left (all of whom were wonderful people, warm, personable and caring) and they've eliminated some of the most convenient services (walk-ins on Saturdays). The final straw for us was when a recent visit for a minor issue ended up costing more than $200 and then finding that we were charged services not requested and that were unnecessary. This appears to be the new business model - overcharge for basic services that used to affordable and slip in hidden costs. This is not the practice that Dr Schieffer and Dr Gray spent so many years building. What a shame......a huge loss for the community. read more

The doctors and staff at Southside Pet Hospital are AMAZING! We've been using them as our vets since 2005. Dr. Gray has performed two major surgeries on two of my dogs. The first was life-saving, as my 8 week puppy was attacked by a dog and almost killed. The second was an ACL repair on my 14 year-old beagle. She's already climbing stairs and wanting to jump and run after two weeks. I would not trust my beloved dogs (all three) with any other veterinary practice. I have been taking all my pets here since before they got bought out by big business. It is a lot less personal than it use to be. Living on disability I don't have much to work with and I specifically told them over phone and in office not to do any extras as I didn't have the money to cover it. I love my dogs vet and he deserves to be paid for his services. But when he said he was going to do a cleaning of a wound and shave his tail I said fine not realizing that it would cost $30 more on top of visit. No money was mentioned and I didn't ask. I thought it was in notes that I couldn't do anything extra. Guess I must be really stupid to think anything was included in a vet visit beside talking about problem. Man I've never felt so awful not being able to provide for my pet. Was able to swing getting medicine but not pain medicine or collar so he would leave his tail alone. Could have if I'd known about the extra being charged. What a fool I am. This isn't saying anything bad about them because they are a wonderful vet. Just be aware that all things done in visit cost extra. I guess I should have known better. I don't blame them. They are a good vet and I love Mr. Pooh's Doctor. He really does care and explains what to do and how to do it. But not so good talking about cost. Sends you to receptionist or assistant for anything dealing with money. It's not there fault I have no money. I highly recommend them just beware that all movement or actions outside of talking with you are billable on top of visit. read more

Dr Schieffer and entire staff are always nice, very helpful with questions, concerns and offer non-sales suggestions with pet issues/problems. 5.5 years ago I came to Southside and Dr. Gray with my very first pet. My maltese was 7.5 years old, a puppy mill mama and Southside has always gone over and above my expectations with her care. They have taught me much about being a pet owner, answered questions I had - similar to calling the Dr. with a newborn- those, oh gosh, what do I do now questions!! I am grateful for the care Bella has received and continues to receive. My life has been enriched beyond measure with Bella in it and the care she receives from Southside has helped to make my experience with her sooo delightful! read more

You must try this facility! I had my first visit this week. The staff is friendly, very helpful, and prompt. It's a new building so everything was clean. I will not stay with them otherwise. The groomer is very friendly and knows her craft well. She did a great job on my Shih Tzu. There was some confusion about anal gland expression. I'm only mentioning this because many people think when the groomer does it and that's all that is needed. The groomer only does the outer area. A vet or vet tech are the ones that do the complete job. Some breeds need it more often than others. I have given Southside Pet Hospital 5 stars but again, I only had one visit. I didn't see any red flags and left there with the decision to change from the vets and groomers I've been using to this one. read more

I loved this place...before they moved next to Walmart. Every since they moved into their new location it has all gone down hill. When I took my dog there in June, the vet was very rude, condenscending and honeslty snotty. When I went to pay, I noticed that the amounts were alot higher then they had been before as well. As my husbandd and I were leaving I was 98% sure that the two girls at the front desk were talking about us, and not kindly for some reason. Thinking everyone has a bad day (the vet) and maybe I was wrong on the girls, when the card came saying my cats were due for their yearly I packed them up and showed up on Saturday morning like I always have. I was the first one there and waiting to go in. When I went to check in and they asked what brought me in, they informed me they could not see my cats because they no longer allow walk-ins for well visits. This was NOT mentioned on the card they sent to me, nor was I notified any other way. When I asked if they could make an exception just this once, as my cats shots were due the next day, the young lady at the desk snootily said "Sorry". I asked if I could then make an appointment for that day and again "Sorry" She then offered to make an appointment for later in the week, but that would mean the booster would be past due. When I asked what that meant she simply again said "Sorry" An older lady, short red hair, was also behind the counter with the young lady. I was standing there thinking of what do to and she says, very snotty and rude "No, we just cant do it. There is nothing we can do for you" At that point I about faced and left. I crossed the street and went to Olathe West, they were more then happy to see me, and the time it took for the Vet to see both of my cats and administer the shots took 10 mins. So Southside lost 3 patients over 10 mins of work. I have never been treated so poorly. I will never go back and would not recommend this location to anyone. read more

The immediately saw us (after we were turned away at another vet) and did all they could...poor sweet boy had a heart attack and I am sure was gone by the time we got there but they tried!!! We have brought my dogs to Dr. Gray for decades. In every imaginable circumstance, our pets have received knowledgeable care, advise, and always empathy and kindness. I appreciate that I am part of the decision making. Once my dog was so sick, Dr. Gray treated her in the car so she wouldn't need to be moved or wait in the office. When your pets are so important to you, it is with thankfulness that we have such a trusted veterinarian. The office staff is very friendly and helpful. Barb, especially, sets a positive tone and calls the pets and their owners by names like they we are all friends. read more

I have had pets for 24 years and in all those years of veterinary doctors visits I've never had a Doc as nice and awesome as Dr. Bower. I appreciate that she was kind, caring, attentive to my financial state and did NOT go through the visit quickly. She listened with care which is something I have missed from every doc besides one that I've seen in 24 yrs. She asked questions about Sunny that I would not thought would matter but they do. My favorite thing about her besides the abundance of information she provided me is her bed side manners for my sweet kitty and my stressed and concerned self. She left no doubt in my mind that she cared for me, loves my cat, her job and wants to be there helping peoples loving pets. She also did not mind going over it a time or two, sensing I needed it. Love the new location love the fresh clean look and more space. The nurses at the front counter were also extremely helpful and kind. Went out of her (wish I grabbed her name!) way to pull the big book from the back and give me more information about the prescription food needed. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE VETS OFFICE!!! This office took advantage of our beloved pet being sick and convinced my husband to purchase a plan we didn't need. They claimed that all services needed for our pet would be covered with this plan, this is a LIE. We spent hundreds of dollars out of pocket trying to save a dog that we were later told by TWO vets that the humane thing was to put him to sleep. read more

Okay, so from what I have read on Citysearch and Google reviews, this place has it's ups and downs. From my own experiences at Southside I would recommend getting your pets vaccinations done here. They are BY FAR the most affordable when it comes to my cat getting her shots. I took her elsewhere once and I paid $52.00 too much. (I know this because I called Southside Pet Hospital right afterward and they quoted me that much less than the place I had taken her to.) However, when it comes to kenneling and surgeries, I would not recommend getting those things done here. Always do your research when it comes to kenneling, surgeries, or when you think your pet may be ill. If you think your pet may be sick and one Pet Hospital says your pet is fine, I personally recommend getting a second opinion. No one knows your pet like you do. read more

When you bring a pet into your home you quickly learn to love them and accept them as a part of your family. We have had three such family members since we moved to Olathe. We started at Southside when Yoshi entered our life 18 years ago. They always gave Yoshi & us the most loving , caring and professional care that we needed. But the greatest care came when we had to put Yoshi down. He was an old dog and got very very sick. It was something he wasn't going to get better with and he was desperately suffering. The entire staff not only supported us, but took the time to come in and say goodby to Yoshi because they were going to miss him too. So when our son got their puppy and two years later when we obtained Max, there wasn't any doubt where we would take them. They have given Max and Che' the most compassionate and loving care. They helped us get Max through his first winter with us when he appeared to be suffering with hip pain from the cold. They have helped our son dog, Che' with severe skin allergy problems and gastrointestinal issues. Then again, this last week, we took Max in for his yearly exam and shots. Max is kind of a timid dog and they recognized his need for them to be gentle and talk him through the exam and shots. They have always been kind, compassionate and loving to every animal that we've brought in, recognizing that these pets are a part of our family and they are loved! It's very easy to get in to see them if you have a medical problem or give answers over the phone to save an unnecessary visit. Do not recommend at all!! I have been going to Southside Pet hospital for a little over two years. In that 2 years I have been given so much misinformation that my trust with them is not there. The first couple of visits for my dog Stitch were wonderful, but after that completely terrible. I have to go on Saturdays due to work schedule. Everyone on Saturdays must be new, they have no clue whats going on and are some of the most unfriendly people I have ever meet. When you have a complaint they call the vet out usually Dr. Grey, nice guy but nothing gets handled. when I complained the first time it was to Dr. Grey, he started shaking and since then he will not see my dog. sad that's the way my complaint was handled. My dog requires grooming, I wanted the first groom at southside, the manager set me down and talked down to me telling me what I should do with my dog instead of listening to me. I have had many dogs requiring grooming and my grandma was a breeder of them. So, I know what I am talking about when it comes to grooming. that was the pre mentioned complaint to Dr. Grey. On to the paw plans. Stich has been under one since day one. First year I left money that I prepaid on the table, that was my bad. I wasn't going to sign up for the second year but I got a call from them that they talked me into it promising stuff they were never gonna deliver on, Then wrote in computer that i declined the service which i never did. Now I am at the end of the second year they have no clue who I am who my dog is. Anytime I inquire on the paw plan I get different answers, honestly these plans are only good if you do not have an emergency or if you have a lot of time to devote to it. They will not remind you of services due they assume you know, I had an emergency the week of November 17th, I called in trying to get in during the week and was told "I have an appointment available on Friday at 11:30 and it is Monday. I ended up taking Stitch to another vet that day. This is the factor in me cancelling my paw plan and I will be changing vets. I got a call from the manager Katherine, she was not friendly. She had no clue of my complaint then when I tried to explain it she dismissed my concerns like the rest of the staff at Southside. She was not prepared to call me she herself couldn't give me a straight answer, then when I asked about why everyone is giving diffrent answer her excuse was the Saturday people do not get enough training.That is not my fault that is Katherine and the rest of the managers fault, BUT IT Isn't Mine. and therefore I should get the same service on Saturday as I get during the week. read more

After being patients at a couple of other practices in the area, we took several people's advice and went to Southside. While the decor is a bit dated, the knowledge and compassion of the staff is totally up to par and the prices are very reasonable. If you like a veterinarian and staff that will take the time to do a thorough work up on your pet and explain the issues, options, and possible effects of each option, then Southside is for you. read more
