Not the usual place you'll see reviewed on Yelp, but at some point in everyone's life, you need to…read morefind one. We're pleased to say that we found an absolutely exceptional one when my dad passed away. We've had prior dealings with this funeral home, as it was the same place where my wife's grandmother and her father had their wake years ago. Schielka has been a recognized place on the far NW side of Chicago for a long time, serving the community in the O-streets and P-streets on the edge of the city. While Cumberland Chapels in Norridge is bigger and seemingly more popular, Schielka is a smaller yet more suitable venue, especially for a small family like ours who did not need to pay a premium for a large facility that can accommodate hundreds of visitors. Schielka has several chapels, divided by removable curtain-style wall partitions, which can be expanded into a larger room if needed. Bob, the funeral director was a pleasure to deal with. We first met him last July, since my dad was in hospice and at end stage Parkinson's. My mom and I pre-selected the casket and set up the preliminary details since we knew we would need to do this sooner or later. We told him about my dad's personal background he needed to make a newspaper obituary as well as our church of choice and some of the basic requests for the ceremony. When time came to set the day and time for the wake, Bob was both compassionate and helpful in arranging the details, a true professional for a very difficult job. He helped us with everything from filing the death certificate paperwork to the choice of printed cards we were going to give out with my dad's name on back and a prayer. My family was impressed with the embalming work too. In his final days, my dad's face shrunk and his temples sagged inward. He was chewing his lips and they were bloodied and damaged badly. Using a photo from the 1990s I furnished, Bob was able to make my dad look natural, and about 10 years younger, as if there was nothing wrong with him. We appreciated all the attention to details Bob gave and would recommend Schielka to anyone.

Everyone at Schielka was so very kind and above and beyond. so many changes came up and Bob just guided us through. He was a backbone when needed it and understanding. In addition to a very beautiful day; for some reason amazing karma followed me wherever I went…read more After a consult meeting in the area I stopped to visit a kind friend who died 2 months ago. I'm sure many of you have been in similar situations: where in the sadness of a moment you think you know where you are; but weeks later when you return, you can't find where you were at all. Such was the case today. But it wasn't just the many souls there who seemed to be looking out for me. A wonderful woman in the business office steered me in the right direction. And when I walked back and forth and back and forth with my miniature map in hand, pulling 4 inch heels out of the grass, not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 cemetery workers came to help me find the grave site I had been sweating, looking for. It took all 5 of us at least 25 minutes. Maybe I looked sad. Maybe they knew I wouldn't leave til I found him. As I thanked them for their help, even though they all looked like they could have used a Gatorade, they all smiled and said, "That's what we're here for". No doubt in my mind that this particular scenario repeats itself for all of them, each week, many times over. Thank you doesn't seem to cover it.

I was told attachments are not allowed on flat markers here. I respect rules, but I've also seen other flat markers with porcelain portraits on these grounds. I asked about an exception/waiver, offered to sign a hold-harmless and take full responsibility, and was told waivers aren't being granted for that. Separately, I learned that marble headstones aren't permitted. I had already ordered a marble marker online (while grieving--who thinks to check every material rule at that moment?). It was shipped and then denied. I paid for the plot and simply wanted a custom marker that honored my loved one, but the rules are far more restrictive than many families expect. If you're considering burial here, please know: Color/porcelain photos are not allowed on flat markers (even though there are clearly flat grave markers with full color portraits). Marble is not accepted (ask what materials are approved), and you must get written design approval before ordering anything. I also found the Memorialization Department interactions more personal than service-oriented. What families need is basic compassion and grace during a very hard time.

Whether it is support for many causes in the neighborhood or their strong support for First Responders, Malec is always there. It wasn't until November of last year when our family suffered a tragic loss. Our cousin's baby daughter Mayah passed away and our family was shattered. So much of that time was a blur, but I vividly remember Ed saying, "We will take care of everything; don't worry about it." My memories are of family and friends coming together for support. My memory is that of patience and compassion from the team at Malec & Sons. And never for a single moment did I have to worry about anything in regard to the wake and funeral; they had it covered. Thank you Ed and to your entire team at Malec & Sons Funeral Home in Gladstone Park. You aren't just another business in the community, you are a friend to our community and know that we appreciate that. Thank you, John Garrido

We met with Mr. Peter Rago, and from the very beginning, he was so supportive, kind, considerate, professional, and knowledgeable. Peter went above and beyond, and we just knew that we were in great hands throughout the entire process. He checked in, was always available for questions, changes, etc, worked with us to accommodate our needs, and there was an overall comfort that came with working with Peter and the rest of the staff at Malec. When it came to the arrangements, he made sure everything ran smoothly. I cannot say enough good things about Peter and everyone at Malec. I highly recommend them. -Erin F.

When we lose loved one's, it feels hopeless and chaotic, the team here guides you through the process with grace, respect and sometimes even a little timely humor. We've used them since the 80's and have never had a bad experience. Special mention to my guy, Marc Pierotti. I've worked with him on multiple occasions and he is both a talented mortician and a great ambassador for Montclair-Lucania and Dignity Memorial. If you live in NW Chicagoland and have lost someone, my deepest condolences. Call the Lucania team, and start the healing process off right.
