Although the graves have simple, small markers laid in the ground, there are two large obelisks flanking the east and west sides of the cemetery. Each has the Masonic square and compass symbol on the side. Interestingly, the broken column that stands in front of them is also a piece of Eastern Star symbolism (Eastern Star is one of many Masonic organizations). The large mausoleum that is set farther back in the cemetery has multiple Masonic emblems on it as well. Although I have not been inside the mausoleum, I understand that there is a large marble chair with the Masonic emblem etched in it, and a Masonic bible open nearby. I would be curious to know more about this--if Masonic meetings happened here before it became a cemetery, and also if the marble throne is placed in the east, the direction in which the presiding officer of all Masonic orders sits during meetings. There are several notable burials in this cemetery. Mike Royko, one of Chicago's most beloved journalists, rests here in the mausoleum. The Roebuck of Sears & Roebuck is interred here as well. And in the unusual Chicago history category, there is a cenotaph for Herman Schuenemann, the captain of the Rouse Simmons. Known as the Christmas Tree Captain, he and his crew would use the schooner to bring hundreds of trees from Michigan to Chicago to sell to the public for the holidays. The last voyage of this beloved ship ended in tragedy when the ship disappeared beneath the waters in 1912. There is a sunken garden to the south of the mausoleum, separated only by a small drive from the towering structure. The garden is a large and peaceful place to pay respects and offers a place for quiet reflection. The Acacia Park is in and amongst a couple other cemeteries; Irving Park Cemetery is across the street, and Westlawn Cemetery is just to the north. In fact, the gate between Acacia Park and Westlawn is often open and you can travel between the two.

My Nana purchased them in hopes that she would be buried with with her beloved husband of 49 years. She hoped, at the time, that she and her children, my father and his sister, her husband, and sisters and I (three of us), would reside here with each other in eternity, in the once beautiful grounds here. My aunt was supposed to be entombed with her husband, my beloved uncle. He originally wanted to be cremated, and the intent was either he would placed with her, or she with him, upon their passing. He ended up passing first and was buried. My aunt, having passed at the height of COVID, fortunately for her not from COVID, never got placed with her husband! The new management team told my sister and father that they would have to get a release from my uncle's sister pay a ridiculous "reassignment" fee, and then there was still no ability to have my aunt's remains entombed with her husband, despite this being promised at the time of my uncle's burial in 2009! These money-hungry, uncompassionate people took advantage of my father and sister, convinced them to purchase several mini urns, necklaces, and other material memorabilia items rather than doing as was clearly designated upon purchase of the extra graves, which were paid in full after my family paying on them, plus interest, for nearly 15 years. We were promised and assured that all these things were documented and recorded with then purchase agreement, only to be told that the "purchase records", which have still been withheld despite my request for them. I'm saddened and heartbroken that funeral home owners, having a direct interest in the choices people make to memorialize their loved ones, have ANY influence over where they will also reside eternally, have an interest in a cemetery! I've been told the laws regarding heirship over cemeteries were "different than regular heirship laws", and my family was extorted for documents that were not relevant, "transfer fees" that shouldn't have even been a factor, and we still have no answer and have been ignored for going on two years!

We're pleased to say that we found an absolutely exceptional one when my dad passed away. We've had prior dealings with this funeral home, as it was the same place where my wife's grandmother and her father had their wake years ago. Schielka has been a recognized place on the far NW side of Chicago for a long time, serving the community in the O-streets and P-streets on the edge of the city. While Cumberland Chapels in Norridge is bigger and seemingly more popular, Schielka is a smaller yet more suitable venue, especially for a small family like ours who did not need to pay a premium for a large facility that can accommodate hundreds of visitors. Schielka has several chapels, divided by removable curtain-style wall partitions, which can be expanded into a larger room if needed. Bob, the funeral director was a pleasure to deal with. We first met him last July, since my dad was in hospice and at end stage Parkinson's. My mom and I pre-selected the casket and set up the preliminary details since we knew we would need to do this sooner or later. We told him about my dad's personal background he needed to make a newspaper obituary as well as our church of choice and some of the basic requests for the ceremony. When time came to set the day and time for the wake, Bob was both compassionate and helpful in arranging the details, a true professional for a very difficult job. He helped us with everything from filing the death certificate paperwork to the choice of printed cards we were going to give out with my dad's name on back and a prayer. My family was impressed with the embalming work too. In his final days, my dad's face shrunk and his temples sagged inward. He was chewing his lips and they were bloodied and damaged badly. Using a photo from the 1990s I furnished, Bob was able to make my dad look natural, and about 10 years younger, as if there was nothing wrong with him. We appreciated all the attention to details Bob gave and would recommend Schielka to anyone.

I was told attachments are not allowed on flat markers here. I respect rules, but I've also seen other flat markers with porcelain portraits on these grounds. I asked about an exception/waiver, offered to sign a hold-harmless and take full responsibility, and was told waivers aren't being granted for that. Separately, I learned that marble headstones aren't permitted. I had already ordered a marble marker online (while grieving--who thinks to check every material rule at that moment?). It was shipped and then denied. I paid for the plot and simply wanted a custom marker that honored my loved one, but the rules are far more restrictive than many families expect. If you're considering burial here, please know: Color/porcelain photos are not allowed on flat markers (even though there are clearly flat grave markers with full color portraits). Marble is not accepted (ask what materials are approved), and you must get written design approval before ordering anything. I also found the Memorialization Department interactions more personal than service-oriented. What families need is basic compassion and grace during a very hard time.
