Best sandwiches in San Rafael. My favorites are: Quarterback Kid, This Little Piggy Banh Mi & Il Caprese.

I've given this place more tries than I should have but have been consistently disappointed. I got a build your own sandwich today. All of the build your owns come with toppings including lettuce, tomato, pickles, peppers and red onion. The sandwich only had meat and cheese covering 1/4 of the bread to start off with... and it had ONE PICKLE on the entire things and 2 pieces of peppers. It's not cheap either for what you're getting so I would pass and go to Michael's or somewhere worth your money. read more

I know the food industry is difficult to make money in but this place just isn't competitive with other sandwich shops at its price level. I think the issue is that they kept Bruno's recipes, which relied heavily on prefect, consistent, execution - which the old owner was particularly good at. Those same sandwiches are boring if you can't execute at that level. With that in mind, I'd recommend overhauling the menu and trying something completely different. I wish em luck! Not great. It's a regular deli trying to act fancy. I've tried it twice, both times for sandwiches and both times they were very "meh." AND I spent a lot of time doctoring it up at home because I'd had a sandwich there before. I took off their deli cheddar slices and put on some extra sharp white, put it under the broiler, put some Maldon sea salt on it and pressed it. Even still, meh. The day before my most recent ham and cheese at Belly, I had had a simple ham and cheese sandwich at Tartine in the city. It was one of the best things I've ever eaten. Not every place can be Tartine and that's okay but Belly Deli doesn't even come close--and it costs just as much for an amazing sandwich at Tartine as it does for a meh sandwich at Belly that I'll probably only eat half of. I would love for them to be better and to be able to get awesome sandos in Marin outside of MHBB and maybe a couple of other places. read more

Where's the beef? Not a bad sandwich however, at this price, there should be slightly more meat in there than they give. Now reducing my review from three to one star based on the owner's response, which is laughable. She states that she needs to make inferior sandwiches in order to stay in business... Based on her statement of such, in addition to all the other bad reviews, it's clear this is not the place to go for sandwiches. In San Rafael, I would instead suggest Viking Subs or Michael's Sourdough, both which make better sandwiches than here. See? Really wanted to like the sandwiches here but unfortunately the sandwiches we ordered were really disappointing. I'm not one to make a scene nor return things because that's not my style but I was seriously considering it. First off, the deli is beautiful, welcoming, spacious, plenty of parking. This part was A+. For sandwiches, we got the Cowboy Tri-Tip and a Porcheta Banh Mi. Bread freshness can range from fresh out of the oven moist and soft to rock hard and stale. Both sandwiches were rock hard and completely inedible. So hard that I was concerned I'd break my veneers. We had to peel the crust off but even then it was crazy hard to peel off and the middle of the bread was dense and chewy. Besides the bread quality, the sandwiches were tiny compared to what you'd get elsewhere. They looked like 6" subs. Both sandwiches were also on the bland side with few ingredients. Though their tri-tip meat was tender, the overall sandwich was underwhelming. There's no cheese or other veggies. Just the meat, some spread and some greens. If there's not going to be many ingredients, whatever in there really has to shine. I did not like the porchetta banh mi- it was really salty and I had hoped the pickled carrots would balance the saltiness but the carrots didn't taste pickled at all. There is not a lot about it that is remotely a banh mi sandwich and the flavor was also underwhelming. At over $50 for 2 sandwiches, 2 soda cans and a small bag of chips, this is one of the most expensive and worst sandwiches for the price we've ever had. read more

Wow- what a change from its previous incarnation called Deli Belly. I hadn't been here since, and the place now has tons of character and great food and drink selections for picnics in addition to great sandwiches. Today I had a lovely Caesar salad that was prepackaged in their to-go case and was asked by a super helpful employee whether I would like to have it tossed. Definitely- how nice. Food and ambience were lacking. The room felt like a tomb. Service was okay but waitstaff did not have a cohesive look. These guys looked like they just stepped in off the street. There was no music and since the room was largely empty that contributed to the tomb like effect. We ordered the samosas which were good but could've been hotter. The butter chicken and curry chicken were meh. We've had better The chicken had a weird gelatinous feel. All in all, this was not a positive experience and we won't be going back. read more

So I decided to try a belly deli today and it looked great look promising prices were high though. So we ordered sandwiches my sandwich was supposed to be roast beef, turkey, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and Italian dressing and all of that was around a quarter inch thick and the bread was 3 inches thick. The bread was stale, dry and most of what I tasted. The sandwich had no flavor at all, and sadly to say I'd rather eat a Subway sandwich. And for the price definitely not worth it. Definitely not worth half the price. If you want a real sandwich go to Michael sourdough. Response : So the roast beef things fine I understand that, but there was nothing on the sandwich one piece of lettuce, barely a tomato two pieces of pickle and two pieces of turkey. There was definitely Italian dressing as it was dripping as I was eating it, but it didn't help to dry sandwich, and I get the sandwich every other place without Italian dressing and it has flavor and it has meat and it has substance not bread. It was basically a stale bread sandwich. Every place put so much more meat and fillings then you guys do. And all these comments are the same thing I've been reading over and over and over you've never changed since you opened so you don't care. Tried to go in on a Sunday morning at 10. They seem to have two employees with one taking orders and the other watching. We came in wanting to get sandwiches for 4 people, but after waiting for almost 10 minutes gave up and went somewhere else. Looks nice inside. Super disappointing after being a loyal customer and close family friend to Bruno's Deli and the owner. I had heard not great things about the new belly deli ownership for a while but thought to give it a try. I ordered a normal sandwich, and was given a very very underwhelming sandwich for $18 which is crazy. I was given only 2 cuts of dry, tasteless turkey (thick cut not and deli meat which is odd in my opinion). I was also given bascislly the butt end of the loaf of bread? With a bottled drink and tip my order was almost 30$ which is atrocious for the quality of the sandwich I received. Took a minute to find the sweet spot. I'm a hungry boy and the sandos where just to small. So I asked Kelly (Owner: awesome, unfiltered and tells it how it is), could you do me a favor and combine 2 sandwiches in one. She giggled and said "Whatcha you thinking". Bruno's was amazing but the people who they sold the deli to don't share the same passion for an Italian Deli. The Boar's Head meat is gone for some cheaper brand. The amount of meat and toppings in the sandwich are much smaller. They even skimped on the lettuce! The flavors just aren't there anymore. The bread was not fresh. This sucks!!! Bruno's was easily the best Deli in Marin. Belly Deli is resuming their legacy of subpar sandwiches. read more

I got so excited when I saw there was an "Italian" deli right down the street from my new home. I ordered the godfather on a French roll because no matter what you cannot find Italian bread out here. After I ordered the sammich I looked around. There was almost no deli meat in the cases. The premade chicken parm looked like it had been sitting for days. The mozzarella was wrinkled and man you could just tell it was begging to be tossed out. If you look at previous pictures, I assume they were taken when the original owners had it. Those pics are what brought me in. I saw boars head deli products, I grew up on that in NYC. Nada, nothing, so sad. When my sammich was done I asked the young lady if they sold their mozzarella cheese. She looked confused so I asked her it was made in house, she said no. This is an Italian deli is it not? I literally told her that's false advertising considering the menu for the sammich says "fresh mozzarella". Took the sammich home, took a bite and sure enough, that cheese is like the crap you buy at Safeway. I paid $18 for this less than average product. Jersey Mikes sells their Giant size Italian for $13.95. I've had their sammiches many times and they blow this sad example of an Italian classic off the map. Definitely do not recommend definitely will not be back. Save your money, there's a Mr Pickles less than 1/2 a mile from here.
