I don't think This is the salon that has been reviewed...There are only two chairs. No happy vibe. No art. Not welcoming. In fact, I was made to feel bad about asking for what I wanted. I brought pictures, described how I wanted it cut and the shape I was after. No one made sure I was understood. Young Sarah, sweetheart, told me she would dry cut it. I objected. She talked me into it and started cutting 4" long pieces out Willy nilly. After seeing the first section all frizzy, I tried to stop it but was talked back into it. Emma, the owner in the other chair, interrupted her own client's haircut to chew me out for asking for what I wanted, even telling me to cut my own hair if I didn't like it! Sarah, now embarrassed for me, assured me it would come out right. Although shape is better it's not what I wanted. I asked to keep all the length and let NG layers blended at the bottom--a no brainer. It's shorter overall by 2 inches, have frizz where there should be gentle layers, it's uneven--but I am okay with the cut. It's just not what I wanted or asked for. I will have to grow it out for months before it can be cut properly. Sarah actually can cut hair (her way) and did give me a somewhat workable cut that looks cute after I finesse it with heat tools- trying to hide that frizz and unevenness. But it was Emma who really made me feel bad. I cried walking out the door. read more

Quaint, cute little salon with a casual, friendly, atmosphere. All the stylists and customers seemed happy and chatty. I booked through Yelp and Emma, the owner, was very responsive. The salon was initially a little hard to find--it's tucked back behind a couple businesses--but a quick call helped me locate it. Sarah, my stylist, gave me an excellent cut and showed me how to coax out natural waves for a low-maintenance, but updated look. The salon charges on a sliding scale but it's gratuity-free, which I wish more salons and spas would do. I am very pleased with my cut, so I paid at the higher end of the scale; at a price point in line with most salons. I am very pleased, so I plan on returning for my next trim. read more

Anna Jo has been making my hair magic for about three years now and I can genuinely say she is the best thing to ever touch my locks. Even now living across the country I still go see Anna Jo at Belle Starr when I am in town. She has such vision it is incredible. A true hair artist with exquisite talent. My go to salon :) First of all they have a great central location and the salon itself is beautifully decorated and calming. For me, Chelsea at Belle Starr Salon was the final piece to fall into place and solidify my adoration for the new city I call home! I found Chelsea when Belle Starr was in the old location on the East side. Since then, the salon has moved to a new mid-town space that is a delightful slice of Tucson culture. The "Keep Tucson Pretty" mural that greets you upon entering, is the perfect segue to the local art, jewelry and personal care products available for purchase. There is a comfy lounge that has a record player and pixie lights adorn the wash basin area. They even have a selection of soda water for guests! But none of that is what makes this place truly special... Chelsea is a true master of her craft! Since she has naturally curly hair herself, you don't have to worry about any of the "rookie" mistakes that can happen with other stylists. She is also an amazing colorist - the golden unicorn who can cut AND color with equal awesomeness! Being raised in Tucson, Chelsea has the natural gift of understanding the culture and style of this amazing city. As such, she is a wonderful collaborator and together we come up with some fun new ideas. All this and she one of the loveliest people I've ever met - I always have fun hanging with her while getting my hair done! Two hours later the owner called and could not get me in prior to my leaving on a trip. She offered other places but no stylists and it was already late in the day on a Sunday. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Belle Starr. I've been seeing the owner, Cass, for my color for the past two years and she is so talented. She has taken me from platinum blonde, to creamsicle copper, to champagne blonde, to my current balayage golden blonde. With all that color you'd think my hair would be brittle and damaged but it's not because Cass is super knowledgeable, uses the best products, and offers effective deep conditioning treatments. In addition, her salon doubles as a community art space. There is always great local art for sale on the walls, the occasional yoga class where proceeds go to local community organizations, and beauty nights where you get to learn about and test products for free. I even won a jar of organic, vegan body scrub in a raffle at the last beauty night (super exciting for someone who never wins anything!). Cass is the owner and rockstar behind her salon, and her style is truly great. This is by far one of the best salon experiences I've ever had. Sounds weird but I usually get really nervous and intimidated when I go to salons but Belle Starr was a whole new ballgame. I felt so, so, comfortable in the space and the girls are SO sweet, fun, and quirky and I felt like I was finally among my people. The salon is in a little casita and it feels like you're at your cool friend's house getting a haircut. They even have a little fridge and kitchenette area where you can grab a Le Croix, coffee, or tea. I wanted to get my bangs cut with an edgy Bettie Page feel and I could tell Cass knew exactly what I was talking about and dude, she delivered.
