We were interested in refreshing our…read morefireplace in our modern home and had always dreamed of having a black marble fireplace instead of just white drywall. I Yelped and found Del Mar Tile and Stone and checked out photos and crossreferenced everything. He had stellar reviews everywhere. John the owner came out within a day or two (on a Sunday!) to look at the project and gave me a quote the next day. The project involved tiling on the fireplace surround and also into a cutout for our TV and the vent for the fireplace above. The quote was fair for the amount of work involved and I thought, hey if he's already there maybe get him to re-do tile in one of our bathrooms (a much smaller project)? I texted him a video and measurements of the space prior to him working on the space and he was able to quote the bathroom without coming back! Super cool. The quality of work is amazing. I am a detail-oriented, visual person and with the beautiful black marble with white veining that we chose (with a fluted pattern!) I wanted to be particular with what tiles we should use and which we should not. He was more than accommodating and we have a beautiful, beautiful fireplace now and a gorgeous bathroom. Not everybody could do this job. It was technical as a fireplace surround. The tile contractor had to use the right mortar and he had to level it out just right. As we homeowners know, rarely is your house completely true and flat and square everywhere and the tile had to be done to accommodate all of the imperfections in our visually perfect house. The corners and leveling had to be perfect. He had to carve into drywall to make the corner of the fireplace square. It was crazy and it would have taken me decades of experience to do this myself (enter John). The cutouts for the fireplace and the TV surround had to be perfect. The bathroom turned out flawless as well. John is an awesome person and was so kind and courteous to our pets (he told my dog Thatcher she was beautiful) and was respectful of other contractors we were having at the house at the same time. His son Hunter and his other employee Carlos who worked with him were conscientious, clean, and all three were just all around good people. Please see photos! They do not do the fireplace justice!

He tiled the bathroom floor and shower floor and then told me he was never tiling anything else again LOL. We called Colombo Tile and were instantly happy we chose them! David and his son were friendly, even gave my husband a few tips if he ever tiles again. Most importantly they did an excellent job! My favorite was that they showed care and consideration to protect our home while completing the job. So happy we picked them to help us get our bathroom renovation to the finish line! Like I said above, it's been a year since they completed this job and I'm still as happy as when they finished on day 1! No grouting issues, no lippage, no complaints! Just beautiful, clean tiling! Thanks Colombo Tile!!

His quote was very fair compared to other licensed tile contractors, especially in a market full of fly‑by‑night operators. I wasn't looking to negotiate price, but I did ask for a few concessions, and he was completely reasonable and accommodating. He was also fair with the extras I added after the job began, which is rare in this industry. The quality of his workmanship is the best I've seen in California -- and that's coming from someone who grew up around masons and tile experts on the East Coast. His precision, layout planning, and attention to detail are truly top‑tier. On top of that, I was in a tight situation with my mother moving in and needed the project completed quickly. Shawn stepped up without hesitation, working weekends and extra hours during the week to finish ahead of schedule. The entire bathroom was completed just 12 days after demolition started. I highly recommend Shawn. If you want craftsmanship, professionalism, and integrity, he's the one to hire.
