This review is solely based on the initial contact with Tom and the free estimate I received from Bell Tile. I am moving to Point Loma and reached out to a local FB page asking for suggestions on tile installers in the area. I received recommendations for Floor and Decor as well as a local company, Bell Tile. I always appreciate going with a local company, so I called both companies up for a free estimate. I have to say, for me, the difference between the two was stark. At Floor and Decor, I had a designer who worked with me on ordering the tile to ensure they all had the same caliber and were from the same dye lot (I had no idea about any of this). She also helped me pick the edges for the stairs and the other items on the shopping list that Mark (the manager of the contracted company they use to go to the house and provide the estimate) sent me. Mark spent a lot of time explaining to me the importance of a level floor when working with large tiles. He even showed me with tile in another part of the home the buckling that can occur if the cement is not perfectly level. With Bell Tile, Tom (I believe was his name) also provided me with an estimate. However, I was disappointed, or maybe had high hopes based on the suggestions of what to expect from Bell Tile. Tom seemed slightly perturbed from the get-go (he could have just had a bad morning). When I spoke about the baseboards and asked if they could put them back up after the installation (Floor and Decor said that wasn't a problem), Tom seemed agitated by the request, but eventually he said he thought he had a couple of guys who could do it. As for the estimates, I received the Floor and Decor estimate within two hours of Mark meeting me at my place. Tom said he would send it the following morning. A couple of days later, and not seeing it, I called Bell Tile up to see if they could send me the estimate. He said that I never gave him my email address. Not realizing this, I gave it to him. He said I would get the estimate the following day. At this point, I wasn't getting the best vibe and simply wanted the estimate to see how similar they would be. I was shocked. Floor and Decor came in at over 9K LESS than Bell Tile, with a lifetime warranty on workmanship. Again, this review is not about the actual work of Bell Tile, but rather about the customer service and cost differences compared to Floor and Decor. read more

Five stars for Bell Tile ! I am so please we called Bell Tile to restore our bathroom after our shower leaked and caused extensive damage to the floors and wall.  I wanted to keep the style true to our mid-century home.  I called Bell Tile for an estimate, and Teresa (Tom Bell's wife)  scheduled for Tom came within a few days.  I was delighted that he knew of a company in LA who had just the right trim pieces.  Not only that, but he would be able to do the framing work for the damaged floor and walls.  I learned he does "hot-mopping" which is difficult, but really important to prevent future water damage.  Then the magic of the tile installation happened through Paul (Tom's brother).  Just like any art, it is one thing to imagine and another to make it real.  Paul listened and understood what the concept was.  His motto is "We can make it work."  I would say it turned out better than I imagined. You can see a bit of it in the attached picture.  All this was done with two toddlers running around, and napping.  Everyone from Bell Tile was considerate, dependable, and available.  I highly recommend Bell Tile. read more

Tom will tell you that his brother is the best tile guy in San Diego, but we discovered that Edgar and Pedro, the talented team he assigned to us, do truly beautiful work. While a number of prospective contractors were willing to create niches, if necessary, Tom relished the opportunity to show off Pedro's tile cutting precision and Edgar's uncanny ability to assemble the pieces into a perfectly mitered niche. These guys are two exceptionally talented professionals. My husband and I highly recommend Bell Tile. Both Tom and Theresa were so helpful and professional. We hired them to tile most of our house as well as install new baseboards. Our house presented many design challenges, and they guided us on every step of the process. Believe me, we had so many questions, because we wanted our house to be upgraded while working with a house built in the 70's. They were always there to help us make decisions.
