While it doesn't appear to be open it does look like they are restoring it and you can wander around the grounds or outside. There is a cool statue out front of the longest serving Sheriff in Texas: Sheriff Riddle. He was Burnet's Sheriff from 1939 to 1978. Wow! That's impressive. The old jail closed in 1982 so I guess he may have wore it out! I look forward to visiting again when the inside opens up.

I made comments to those police officers that would have gotten me Rodney Kinged in many progressive states. And the acoustics in the drunk tank are great! I definitely belted out a CCR song or two. I would also like to apologize for the comments I made to the heavyset female officer manning the changing room areas. Without getting into specifics, you did not deserve that and I'm sorry. Also, my use of the word 'manning' is in no way a dig to your physique. The police officer who is in charge of releases during the morning shift is probably the best cop I've ever talked to. Helpful, funny, and doesn't have a chip on his shoulder like many other officers I've encountered. He's the reason I gave the Travis County Jail 4 stars instead of 3.

Fine whatever, so I tell them ok can I know where my renewal ID is then it's been months and it cashed the check for it, they look and it's not in the damn system so I had to pay another $33 for it and the lady I eventually got to at counter #10 was so rude about it when I was trying to explain that no I'm no longer taking the btw test I need to do a renewal. She kept interrupting when I was trying to explain the situation and kept an attitude even though I was just trying to explain that I didn't have a paper and so I needed to to do the renewal instead. Hope she gets fired eventually cause I heard her being rude to other people there

We were with one other group but with so few people on the tour it was more interesting. The guide answered all the questions we had and explained that they are trying to renovate the jail and make it look the way it had before. They've had paranormal investigators here if that's your vibe come check it out.
