One of the most entertaining Wineries in the Finger Lakes. They have a Chocolate and a Cheese Flight for Wine Tasting, but you can also go with neither and just try out 5 different local wines for $10 - a good deal. Their staff are super knowledgeable and friendly, and happy to explain what flavors and notes to expect from each kind of wine - or just chit chat with you about your trip to Geneva. The gift shop is cute and has a little something for everybody - whether you're just visiting or having a wedding nearby. And you can't beat that location or that view of the lake as you stroll across the lawn in front of the castle. read more

Worst winery I've ever been to. Basically a glorified souvenir shop. Came here on a wine tour and in a region with a ton of great winery options, this was remarkable. The atmosphere is absolutely dead. The staff did not care about what they were doing; didn't even offer a description of the wines, most which go by a made up name versus the name of a grape, even when asked. All the server could do is repeat a card written in front of her, and was stand-offish when I asked basic questions that anyone working in a winery should be able to answer. That is atrocious in an area where you can spit anywhere and hit a winery. Every wine I tasted had signs of contamination. The after taste is off with a medicinal tinge, which is a sign that they didn't clean something, which in turn threw off the fermentation. Of the 5 wines I tasted, I only finished 2 and threw out the rest. If it wasn't a tour, I would've walked out. The prices in the shop were atrocious too. Far more expensive than the far better wineries we visited. You couldn't pay me to come back here. Nice grounds but a waste of time otherwise. read more

Food is very, very, very bad. Baaaaaad. Steak was like a shoe. Tasted like haddock. Haddock tasted old and was "tough". There's no such thing as tough haddock. Unless you forget it while other dishes are cooking. Risotto was crunchy. Lobster creme sauce? That's lobster bisque soup. This is cutting corners and not taking pride in the preparation of food. Braised lamb was hard on the outside. Again, forgotten. The price is $150 per person for our bill. Service, the waiter left our cleared plates in the room with us for over an hour. This was our first stop on a wine tour. While it was a good pick and the property is beautiful, we wish that the guide for our wine testing was a little bit more informative. We were told to pick out our five wines and then the guide would tell us about them, but we wanted to know that information upfront to help us pick the wines and understand their flavors better before picking. we think the guide was new, so there were no real issues. Had a baby shower there recently. Positives: Food served was good. Guy setting up food and helping us was very good. Room was nice and had character. Negatives: Some front desk people were impolite and acted like we didn't belong when we were bringing stuff in to set up the night before. Not only was the room and view spectacular, the staff at the front desk and in the restaurants were amazingly helpful, friendly, and cheerful. We loved the wine tastings and the food was delicious. Maya at Stonecutters was a delight to have as our waitress and Alicia made everything from check in to check out superb. If we had issues they were treated as a top priority and we felt very special. We were here for a wine tasting fairly good price, but I don't drink my friends. Enjoyed the tastings. My one friend did a chocolate wine pairing and enjoyed it. I ended up ordering the chocolate truffles. They were good. We went to lunch and had to wait which was interesting for a Friday. The food was good and I had a sandwich. It was very good. The fries were good. My friends all enjoyed their meals but the best was the chowder. It was very tasty. They change this menu a lot , so it's always different when you go back. This was a beautiful location but the food was terrible. We went to the Stonecutter's Tavern during their happy hour, and our drinks were good. But the food took forever and then when it finally came out it was cold. My chicken was over cooked and very dry. I came here the first week of October because I had family in town and wanted to visit some of the wineries along the finger Lakes. We also wanted to take in the fall foliage and the beautiful day. I decided to come to this winery because it is in Seneca Lake and you can dine here as well as have a wine tasting. The castle is gorgeous and it's on the national historic Registry. There's plenty of parking. And two restaurants and a bar. You can dine indoor or outdoor at the formal restaurant Edgars. There's also a spa as well as two grand halls for formal events such as weddings. We saw two weddings while we were there that day. One of the weddings was outdoor on the lawn the other wedding I'm not sure but we did see the cocktail hour after the ceremony on the other side of the castle. I chose their preset tasting with cheese which was really good the wines from upstate New York are really crisp and refreshing. I would definitely come back to this location possibly for a spa day and dinner and wine tasting. The customer service was excellent and it was a great day read more

Haven't stayed overnight here; just a review of the tasting. Such a beautiful place! The tasting spot isn't anything special - just at a bar inside their gift shop - but you can step outside and take in the breathtaking views of Seneca Lake. There are a few tables and benches outside for you to just sit down and take it all in. Enjoyed the wine and hard ciders here, esp the Dry Riesling, "Red," and Mabel's Kinfolk hard cider. They had some cheese pairing option but was en route to dinner so not able to try. Will definitely return! read more

We really enjoyed our stay at Belhurst this past week. We stayed in "The Study" and really loved the room. We had drinks several times in Stonecutters and the staff there is amazing. The grounds are lovely and we had a very good wine tasting with an extremely knowledgeable employee. Actually, all the staff were really nice. If you are looking for unique place to stay, I do recommend Belhurst. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that the beds could use some updating (especially if you have a bad back). read more

Wow! What an amazing time hanging around the Belhurst Castle was for us and could be for you too! We didn't come for the wine tasting, which is probably the biggest draw, but eating here, interacting with the other patrons and walking the grounds proved to be an EPIC TIME nonetheless! There are the two restaurants, Edgar's and Stonecutters. Edgar's is a steak house and was fully booked up, however we did get a couple glasses of good wine at the bar and hung out around their huge fireplace for a bit. Stonecutters had tables open, and I had maybe the best seafood chowder served in a toasted bread bowl that man has ever known (these statement have been evaluated and found to be accurate by the International Bread Bowl Jurists Organization). There are rooms to rent here that range from $195 a night to the master suit in the castle's tower at about $500 a night. This place sounds like a perfect place to have that next group party, romantic getaway or even solo inspirational trip to sequester yourself within Behurst's charm in order to write that great American novel. Speaking of novels, our specific time had all the hallmarks of a great read, as our evening brought upon us bouts of ADVENTURE, ROMANCE, DRAMA & even MYSTERY: ADVENTURE While waiting for our table, we were drinking wine around the patio fire and we met a lovely couple. She was a vineyard & day spa owner from Napa Valley and he was an old wooden ship refurbisher from Skaneateles. They invited us to join us on their next sailing vessel's maiden voyage once it's fully refurbished. We agreed to strap on our sea legs and join them. ROMANCE We accidentally crashed two celebrations of eternal love (aww, how cute!). One of which, and engagement party between two gay men. We were drawn to this party by their humor, considering their cake had a very specific human body part crafted out of fondant. They let us, and even insisted that we touch the cake (true story). The second of which was a bachelorette party from Buffalo. They let us join them for Drag Queen Bingo (also a true story). DRAMA Drag Queen Bingo didn't quite work out. Little did we all know it's an uber hit, and showing up an hour and a half late and drunk already that there's no chance of you getting in. Plus with CUOMO-19, and all the restrictions that are placed on bar patrons these days... We all moved onto another bar down the street. MYSTERY Somebody farted. A friend of mine in our original group smelled it and started asking, "Did you do it? How about you? Did any of you really pretty bachelorettes do it? No? How about you, Jim B.?" This was possibly the worst service I have ever had. Came here for a bachelorette party for dinner at 7. Stood at the hostess stand for 10 minutes until finally someone came up to us got seated in a beautiful room, I think the library? After 10 to 15 minutes of being in the room and no one coming up to us, I went and found my server. He took her drink order and promised us bread. This is at about 7:20-7:25. My drink did not come until 7:50. We didn't get bread until 8:15!!! AN HOUR AND FIFTEEN MINUTES WE HAD BEEN THERE WITHOUT BREAD?!?! I don't know about you, but that's freaking crazy. 830 finally rolls around and we get our salads. I think we got her dinner maybe 15-20 minutes after that. I got the fillet and to be honest it was terrible. How is a fillet not tender when it is cooked, medium rare? It literally cut like a sirloin. I work at a steakhouse I've made fillet that was awful. at the end, our server tried making up for it by giving us dessert to go but at this point, we've been there for 2+ hours and we just wanna freaking leave. My friend got the chicken Parm that part was good. That's the only positive thing I'm gonna say. read more

We recently held our wedding at Belhurst on February 29th. We had a wonderful experience working with Morgan to put it all together. She was so personable, responsive, and prepared. We had the pleasure of enjoying our rehearsal dinner the evening before. This was our only small frustration of the stay as it took a long time to receive our meals - of course we were also in attendance with 16 guests. The server was great! He kept drinks filled and the table happy until food arrived. The bridal party got to stay in the tower suite too, which was stunning! The view of the sunrise was something everyone needs to see. Our big day ended up going perfectly thanks to the wonderful team at Belhurst! They answered all our questions, did all the set up / take down, and made such an enjoyable atmosphere. We highly reccomend Belhurst as an event venue. We will certainly be back for anniversaries (every 4 years lol) and more. Thank you Belhurst! read more

I had a Belhurst brochure in my hand and when I went to ask her some questions, she told me that "everything you need to know is on the website". Okay... That was odd. We're here. Why can't she give me some of the basics about the hotel/castle. Then proceeds to lecture me that a winery and a vineyard are not the same thing. Okay.. My husband and I stayed at the Vinifera Inn (newer part of the hotel) for 4 nights in August for our annual anniversary trip. We enjoyed our stay and the only reason for 4 stars is due to lack of amenities for the price point. The room was spacious and included 2 sinks (1 in bathroom, 1 out), an amazing jacuzzi that I used twice, and a fireplace (turned off for the summer). The bed and pillows were good enough but the mattress could definitely use updating. The shower was also just ok - hot water, but the shower head was low (I'm 5'8") and nothing fancy. The tv was small and not a smart tv, but had a good variety of channels and an HDMI port to connect to a laptop and stream (Wi-Fi was good enough). The breakfast was also very bare bones - pre-packaged bagels/muffins and a few pre-packaged options of cold cereal, mediocre coffee/tea (though large quantities of coffee and always hot), bottles of cranberry and apple juice, a prepackaged cup of oatmeal, and some oranges. We opted to grab breakfast elsewhere (Tim Hortons and Wegmans are good options for cheap baked goods). We received a voucher for 2 free wine tastings right near the check-in area. One of the best parts about this hotel was the friendly staff who always smiled and greeted us. I'd like to return again in the winter when we can use the fireplace! read more

Went to dinner with 12 people, sat us in a separate room; the waiter was the highlight of the meal. Out of the 12 meals two people were really satisfied. heavily salted the polenta with vegetables. One was sent back, the other wasn't eaten. Multiple entrées were lukewarm and obviously under heaters for an extended period of time. Maybe they were lukewarm because the helpers dropped off the food in our private dining area, then the waiter takes 3 to 4 minutes to come in and serve the food to 12 people, then takes another 3 minutes to bring in an extra plate for one of the shared entrées. In summary very underwhelming, especially for the high price point. read more

What a beautiful, scenic spot! It's a winery and a hotel and has banquet facilities. I came in for a wine tasting - didn't quite live any of the wines I tried, but it's a flight of 5 wines for $10, so you could work your way through the list - specially if there's 2 of you - and possibly find something to love. That said, they have a lovely outdoor seating area with gorgeous views of the Lake Seneca. There was a wedding happening in the grounds that looked absolutely beautiful! I enjoyed the wine tasting. It was $5 for 5 tastings. I didn't LOVE the wines as they were not sweet enough for my liking. I did enjoy the Neptune, Knight and Carrie. The Isabella Sparkling smelled amazing but didn't taste the way I would've liked it but my preference. (I love sweet wines... sorry to those who hate me for this) The lady who worked with us.. After waiting for almost a year for my reservation, I spent the night in this beautiful, somewhat mysterious castle located in Geneva,NY. I AM somewhat adventurous,enjoy scary tales and movies. There are three haunted hotels at Belhurst and I was determined to stay in one of the most active rooms.The tower suite I reserved was simply gorgeous,beautifully decorated and very spacious.The balcony off the suite had chairs where you could sit, relax and enjoy the view of Serene Seneca Lake. There was a sitting room that led to a winding staircase taking you to a tower where you could also sit and enjoy the view. After experiencing some unexplained events, true to accounts of paranormal activity, the room did not disappoint.The castle is listed in the Haunted History Trail and you may want to read up on its history before making a reservation or you may find an unpaid guest in your room. read more

One of the reasons I chose this place is I have an obsession with British Royalty so going to taste wine in a castle are two of my favorite things. The room is very large with many different things look at and or purchase. While tasting you look out to Seneca Lake. It was $5 for a tasting and they gave us $2 off wine purchase. Which of course we used the coupons. They actually had a wide variety of wines. We ended up buying a wine called Knight! And the Pinot Grigio, this have great flavor. The good news about Belhurst Castle is that the setting is amazing, beautiful lakefront setting. We had booked a room in the castle that is up 2 large flights of stairs, no elevator and no staff to bring up the bags. We should have been alerted about this when booking the room. The authentity of the castle is at first charming, but there are musty smells around the hotel. They serve a very mediocre continental breakfast with packaged lenders bagels and packaged muffins you can buy at a rest stop. I would expect more gIven the price of our stay. We enjoyed our stay at the castle (in the more modern Inn side): it was an easy experience with a lot of relaxation and comfort, including fireplace and jacuzzi tub right in the room -- with a view right onto Seneca Lake. The weather was perfect for strolling the well-maintained grounds and simply taking in the view and fresh air. This review is strictly for the brunch buffet. We go to the brunch buffet a lot because it's a nice halfway spot for meeting up with my family. It's handicap accessible for my father and the actual castle is quite beautiful with a great view. Speaking strictly food wise- The price that you pay for the buffet isn't really worth it. There is one room thats tucked in that has a few salads, cheese/crackers, some veggies, and meats. It's also the room with all the desserts and the last time we visited they had a chocolate fountain. My kids were totally impressed with it. With your buffet, you do get the choice of a complimentary bloody mary or mimosa. My mimosa was mostly orange juice and very little champagne. The bloody mary was pretty good though! On the hot food table you'll find the classics: Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, and waffles. You'll get two specialty dishes, this time we went they had some sort of stuffed fish and something like the shephards pie. Then you'll have your omelet bar that you can create and have made for you in front of you. Lastly, there is one or two different carved meats. It's definitely plenty of food but lacks on the vegetarian/vegan side unless you want to eat a plain salad and some potatoes. It also just lacks a lot of variety and for the price I expect a higher level of cuisine. Even the desserts taste like they came out of store bought pie. With that said, I haven't tried to wine area or the other restaurant inside. It is beautiful there though and the staff is extremely friendly. read more

I write this from the perspective of someone who 1) actually stayed here overnight (2 nights) with significant other very recently, and 2) grew up in Geneva and occasionally dined here so I know what this place was like 40 years ago. This review is limited to the old Belhurst Castle acommodations. First, unless you enjoy bats flying around your room at night, don't stay in Room 104 which has a chimney that is not enclosed by anything substantial. Second, the decor is what I would term 19th century dilapidation. That is, it may have been redorated in the 19th century style, but not in this century. The attached bathroom I would rate a 3, the room itself a 2 (windows are very dirty and seem to be clogged with bits of cloth, paper etc. by other visitors attempting to keep bugs out), woodwork was probably last tended to around 1980, furniture is definitely 1870s period and shows it, flocked wallpaper is about to let go completely, carpets are very old and presumably dirty, etc. In short, the owner of this property is milking the reputation of the Castle for all it is worth (and then some) and although the grounds and the newer parts of this property are far superior, the old Castle is suffering from a great deal of neglect, and I can't even call it benign. It is obviously intentional. Oh, and if I had a picture of the bat I would have posted it, but it would not land. read more

Theres so much to say about my stop here this weekend. My girlfriend & I thought for starters, the grounds and the castle sitting on the lake was breathtaking, just visually the best thing in town. Our winery experience: busy when we arrived around 1pm. However we were served pretty quickly by this lovely girl named Macaira, who was an absolute delight. We really hoped the reviews were wrong. My husband and I received a gift certificate for our wedding and decided to use it for our anniversary. I booked the Billiard Room which would have been cool had it been clean. The carpet was so gross, probably a good two inches of dust on everything and someone had written "wash me" in the dresser mirror. The bathroom floor had someone else's hair on it when we checked in- they definitely didn't clean behind the door or under the small corner table. The room has a cool balcony but when we went out there, there was a wadded up wet tissue ball on the floor under the window, an old (not in use) window air conditioner and so much dust in the windows and curtains...I was grossed out. I wasn't sure I would even be able to sleep there. We listened to the reviews and canceled our dinner reservation at Edgar's and ate at the Stonecutter's Tavern, which is walk-ins only. We put our name in and thought we would get a drink at the bar and take it outside while we waited. It took almost a half hour to get two glasses of Prosecco and cash out so we could go outside. They were so understaffed; the staff was so stressed out...it made for an uncomfortable experience. We just wanted to go to bed so we could get up and check out. We saw a sterno set up and thought maybe they had read the reviews and did something about the breakfast offerings. Wrong again! We got up, went downstairs to the same packaged bagels and muffins as mentioned in other reviews. I turned around, went back upstairs, got our stuff, and went to check out. For $300/night this place is nothing short of an absolute tragedy. While the view and architecture are beautiful, but the building is clearly owned by people who know nothing about the hospitality industry and if they do, they just don't care! read more

Lovely and historic spot on Lake Seneca. Beautiful setting on the Lake. Though we didn't stay here this trip, we have last year and it was fabulous. They offer a spa and gorgeous rooms. Comfortable club bar looks right out onto Lake. There is a pretty patio and, of course, the castle. Beautiful Victorian setting for breakfast, lunch or romantic dinner.
