My son was receiving services from them for a year and half. Half way through his supervisor suddenly passed away and he was awesome ... my son's main therapist Ms Kim was also great. After the sudden passing of the supervisor the therapist were left to dry... no direction no true guidance no one truly helping them help my child. Scheduling was awful other therapist would call off often ... For at least five months there was no supervision. No progress my son regressed horribly. When a new supervisor finally came out even she was personally aware at how bad they dropped the ball with my son. She apologize several times and promised she would help make changes.... Only after a couple of weeks i noticed how she was full of broken promises as well... so I decided to take my son out the program and Ivet had the audacity to pin the task of retrieving a table that was recently bought for my child and toys WE PROVIDED on his therapist !!! When i let her know we would find services elsewhere she was careless. Vistamar School - World Languages - Mandarin

    Vistamar School

    (11 reviews)

We've had two nieces graduate from Vistamar and our daughter is currently a junior. We have been…read morethrilled with the experience that all three kids have had at the school. The school has an excellent academic program. The curriculum was carefully researched and designed based on best-of-breed programs from private high schools and universities across the country. Classes are rigorous and the faculty is knowledgeable and very focused on the learning environment. We've observed how our daughter has quickly become comfortable seeking out her teachers when she has questions, attending office hours, and becoming a strong self-advocate. Great skills to have for both college and life. One of the most amazing things about the school is the strong culture that Vistamar has created. While the pressure of academics is part of the experience, much of it is neutralized by the strong sense of community and support across both faculty and students. It's an environment that has been really beneficial to our daughter, because it's one that encourages kids to take risks and try new things. She's discovered areas of passion that she may never have found had she not been at Vistamar. Again, something that we want our kids to find at this age so that they can have it for the rest of their lives. The school also does an excellent job bringing students together from different backgrounds and points of view and, through the culture they've created, enable them to build relationships and work together. Group learning and group activities are a big part of the learning culture which help develop skills that will last a long time. The actual school building can be a bit surprising when you look at it from the outside. It's much more of the converted-warehouse-tech-company sort of look than the green-campus-boarding-school. But step inside and watch how the kids work and interact with the environment. It's designed in a way where students and faculty are constantly interacting and creates a comfortable environment where you will often see students lingering well into the evening.

I have two daughters, one who chose to attend Vistamar School. It was the best decision we made…read morefor her. (My other daughter attended a different high school that was the perfect fit for her.) Vistamar is a unique and special school. Its most important characteristic is their intentionality. They have carefully thought through each part of a high school and made intentional choices to build a different and excellent small high school that allows each child to bring their individuality to school every day. The intentionality comes up in both large (why they offer Spanish and Chinese in their language program and require students to pass an oral proficiency language exam in order to graduate) and small (the temperature in the building) ways. You will not find a more enthusiastic and dedicated faculty. Their math program is incredibly strong that is joyfully brought to life by amazing teachers. Their high-level Humanities curriculum requires engagement with great and challenging literature like The Odyssey. My daughter, who wants to be a doctor, has taken advantage of the robust science offerings. All of this is wrapped by two key principals: (a) small class sizes that allow the faculty to know your student and (b) the idea that "there are no spectators" in learning. Your students will be challenged and engaged. As for extracurricular activities, this small school has a number of great opportunities for students. On their sports program, you are not going to have Friday Night Lights football. But what I appreciate about their program is that students are encouraged to try new activities. They have a "no cut" policy when it comes to sports. Their program is built to inspire students to build good, long-term, healthy lifestyle habits and find opportunities to go outside their comfort zone, as well as make new friends. On college prep, the school has built a system that prepares students to be successful in college, while not making the students feel pressurized by the college application process. The school does not want to have students focus their entire high school time on getting into college. The counseling team works closely with each student to ensure that they get into the college that is the best fit for them. As someone who has worked in education for most of my career and as someone who has seen the joy in my daughter's eyes when she talks about her school, I cannot recommend this excellent and innovative high school strongly enough.

Their progress has been nothing short of remarkable--far exceeding what we experienced with previous therapists. Mariah is our fifth speech therapist, and she's truly the most effective we've ever had. In just six weeks, she's helped our children more than any of the others, some of whom worked with them for 1-2 years at a time. I'm so grateful we found Kyra, and that she connected us with Mariah--she is an absolute gem! The entire experience has been fantastic. What I love most is how supportive and compassionate Mariah is. Her deep commitment and genuine care for our children's speech improvement is something truly rare these days. It's clear she's deeply motivated to see them progress, and she makes learning fun for them. This means the world to us. We've been so impressed that we've decided to increase their sessions from once a week to two or three times for quicker progress. Mariah also noticed my willingness to help and thoughtfully suggested compiling homework for me to work on with the kids between sessions--a wonderful extra touch. I have complete trust in her expertise and guidance. Mariah will forever be our favorite speech therapy angel. Thank you!

However, where SBCS leaves other schools in the dust is what they manage to achieve OUTSIDE the classroom. Class size allows the faculty to focus on EVERY student and their needs. No one gets lost in the crowd. That means if your child is dealing with any issues, they'll be noticed and get the attention they should get. This school is all about teaching to the whole individual. Learning to handle responsibilities, conflict, impulse control--the faculty have it under control. If you don't just want your child to grow up a competent math student, then this is where they should go to school. They'll learn how to be moral, caring, thoughtful, and self-aware people (who are also good at math or English or ...!). They've also had a new principal for two years now, Kirstin Born, who taught for twenty-five years before assuming the top position. You couldn't ask for a more savvy, sensitive, experienced person to guide the school. She bends over backwards to meet the needs and requests of her students' families. You won't complain about crickets if you approach Mrs. Born with any concerns. SBCS is great for any student, but it is a gift to students who need extra attention and personalized care in the hands of loving, experienced teachers and administrators.

Even though I'm no longer on staff, I'm still a strong supporter of the school by helping in anyway I can. Finding SBCS felt like discovering a hidden gem, and it truly was. The teachers and staff are so loving and compassionate--they care about each student, not just academically, but as a whole person. The school focuses on strong values and character building, helping kids grow into kind, responsible individuals. Two years after graduating, my daughter is thriving in high school. SBCS always felt like a big family, and the friendships we made there will last a lifetime.

Most just aren't given clear guidance on what to ask for or what their child is actually entitled to. What stands out to me about Rise is how parents are supported in really understanding what's happening and how to advocate in a way that feels realistic and manageable. Having a clear plan and next steps takes a process that can feel chaotic and makes it more actionable. Another strength working with Rise is that April has firsthand experience working within the school system, meaning she understands how things actually function behind the scenes and can guide families in a way that's well-informed and practical. If you're feeling stuck or unsure where to begin with the IEP and 504 process, Rise provides the kind of support that can help you feel more confident and less alone in navigating it.

Navigating special education services can be overwhelming, but our advocate was knowledgeable, compassionate, and truly committed to making sure both kids received the services they need and deserve. Because of her, both Kendra and Liam now have IEPs that reflect their strengths and support their challenges--and I finally feel confident that they're on the right path. RISE Advocacy made a real difference in our lives, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to any family needing guidance and support with special education.
