Vistamar School

(11 reviews)

We've had two nieces graduate from Vistamar and our daughter is currently a junior. We have been…read morethrilled with the experience that all three kids have had at the school. The school has an excellent academic program. The curriculum was carefully researched and designed based on best-of-breed programs from private high schools and universities across the country. Classes are rigorous and the faculty is knowledgeable and very focused on the learning environment. We've observed how our daughter has quickly become comfortable seeking out her teachers when she has questions, attending office hours, and becoming a strong self-advocate. Great skills to have for both college and life. One of the most amazing things about the school is the strong culture that Vistamar has created. While the pressure of academics is part of the experience, much of it is neutralized by the strong sense of community and support across both faculty and students. It's an environment that has been really beneficial to our daughter, because it's one that encourages kids to take risks and try new things. She's discovered areas of passion that she may never have found had she not been at Vistamar. Again, something that we want our kids to find at this age so that they can have it for the rest of their lives. The school also does an excellent job bringing students together from different backgrounds and points of view and, through the culture they've created, enable them to build relationships and work together. Group learning and group activities are a big part of the learning culture which help develop skills that will last a long time. The actual school building can be a bit surprising when you look at it from the outside. It's much more of the converted-warehouse-tech-company sort of look than the green-campus-boarding-school. But step inside and watch how the kids work and interact with the environment. It's designed in a way where students and faculty are constantly interacting and creates a comfortable environment where you will often see students lingering well into the evening.

I have two daughters, one who chose to attend Vistamar School. It was the best decision we made…read morefor her. (My other daughter attended a different high school that was the perfect fit for her.) Vistamar is a unique and special school. Its most important characteristic is their intentionality. They have carefully thought through each part of a high school and made intentional choices to build a different and excellent small high school that allows each child to bring their individuality to school every day. The intentionality comes up in both large (why they offer Spanish and Chinese in their language program and require students to pass an oral proficiency language exam in order to graduate) and small (the temperature in the building) ways. You will not find a more enthusiastic and dedicated faculty. Their math program is incredibly strong that is joyfully brought to life by amazing teachers. Their high-level Humanities curriculum requires engagement with great and challenging literature like The Odyssey. My daughter, who wants to be a doctor, has taken advantage of the robust science offerings. All of this is wrapped by two key principals: (a) small class sizes that allow the faculty to know your student and (b) the idea that "there are no spectators" in learning. Your students will be challenged and engaged. As for extracurricular activities, this small school has a number of great opportunities for students. On their sports program, you are not going to have Friday Night Lights football. But what I appreciate about their program is that students are encouraged to try new activities. They have a "no cut" policy when it comes to sports. Their program is built to inspire students to build good, long-term, healthy lifestyle habits and find opportunities to go outside their comfort zone, as well as make new friends. On college prep, the school has built a system that prepares students to be successful in college, while not making the students feel pressurized by the college application process. The school does not want to have students focus their entire high school time on getting into college. The counseling team works closely with each student to ensure that they get into the college that is the best fit for them. As someone who has worked in education for most of my career and as someone who has seen the joy in my daughter's eyes when she talks about her school, I cannot recommend this excellent and innovative high school strongly enough.

The teachers and the administration make learning fun for our kids. I know this because my son comes home everyday and can't wait to tell me what he learned that day. COVID Specific: The administration and the teachers at the Academy of the Arts took COVID safety protocols very seriously from day 1 and they continue to stick strictly to the protocols today. I feel safe sending my son to the Academy of the Arts on school days (I'd even send him on the weekends if they were open). Thank you Dr. Bogle and team!

This school is exceptional in every way, shape and form. If you're looking for an academically…read morerigorous school that's completely student-centered with LOW class sizes and some Judaism sprinkled in, this is the school for your child! Your child will THRIVE here, period. The administration and teachers are masters at "Fitting 10 pounds of stuff in a 5 pound bag" .... Let me explain. This school year, in addition to a phenomenal academic course load, our daughter has consistently been engaged in Gymnastics every week with Coach Paige, Rolling Robotics STEM, Musical Theatre, weekly cooking classes that are so impressive my husband wants to sign me up, targeted writing instruction from a USC Writing Professor, Chess class on Mondays, Legos on Fridays, Sports with the coach on Tuesdays, Hebrew everyday (GREAT for the developing brain!), Art class with a talented artist, Science Fair, Beach Clean-Up, weekend camping trip in the San Bernardino Mountains, and a bunch of field trips throughout the school year. No wonder the students LOVE coming to school everyday! Come see for yourself - take a tour and see what a school that's rooted in BEST PRACTICES truly looks like. Your child will thank you! It's truly a GIFT for your child to NOT share the instruction with 25-30+ other students. If you have any specific questions, feel free to message me here on Yelp. In addition to being an Academy parent, I'm also an educator with nearly 20 years experience. Happy to answer questions and/or help unpack different educational situations.

I went back to the school to talk to Mr Patterson and he said he was busy and he was gonna schedule a meeting. This was in September of 2025. I went to coffee with the principal and spoke to him in person again and same thing. He brushed me off and said he was gonna schedule a meeting. we're in march 2026 and still haven't received a call. The district should be very concerned. My son has special needs and the school is discriminating against him because of his ADHD! Another person who is worthless is the Counselor, Ms Gonzales. When my son was having issues, we went to the school and told her what was happening. She told us she was gonna have my son bring home a paper so we can sign and consent. She said that was gonna be his first task. And that she was gonna follow up with him. I also asked what other programs did the school offer for academics and she told me she didn't know if the school had any or any resources she can offer. The School year is almost over and haven't heard one word from her. SMH!!! I really hope someone from the district reads this and reaches out. I'm currently sitting in the ER with my son because he said someone dropped him and fractured his knee. Mr Patter refused to call an ambulance and provide PROFESSIONAL medical treatment from EMS. He took the work from his 6th grade teacher that got her degree in teaching not MEDICAL treatment. My attorney is definitely gonna what about this!!!

The staff is wonderful and invested in giving the kids a really great foundation and fun education. The Director is super involved, knows all the kids by name, and really cares about the kids. My kids have learned so much and enjoyed every classroom they have been in. Infant Center: We initially chose MA based on the infant center. Ms. Wroten has been the director in the infant center for years and she is a wonderful teacher. We loved that the teachers will ask you for your individual schedule for your child. All of the other places we toured had a set schedule that your infant needed to adjust to. You give them the schedule for feedings and naps and they will stick to it. The teachers provide updates throughout the day in real time (and pictures!) and they communicate with you about everything. Even in the infant center, the teachers will incorporate activities that encourage development. And I always appreciated the art projects and over the top projects for Mother's Day and Father's Day. We always trusted the teachers and felt that our kids were safe. Our kids flourished in the infant center. Toddler Community: The Toddler community is really the jewel of the school. A really welcoming and cute space that is separate and really special. We got to know all of the teachers in Toddler (most of whom have been there for years) and loved every single teacher. The teachers potty train the kids at a pretty early age. It made the potty training at home super easy. The teachers are very involved in the kids' development at this age - teaching them so many important foundational skills. We saw tons of growth here. Our kids had Ms. Campos (Cornejo) and Ms. Schott - both really amazing teachers - they genuinely care for all the kids and teach them so much. They hold conferences with the parents about your child's growth, areas of improvement, things to look forward to. Of course there are fun activities as well. On top of the motor, language, and cognitive skills they learned in toddler, they also learned to be kind, confident, polite, and friendly. Primary Community: The growth and development in the primary community is off the charts. Again, the teachers are amazing. Ms. Alcaraz is one of the best teachers I have ever known. She really cares for all of her kids like they are her own. Everyday I was amazed at the things the kids learned in primary. The development of reading and writing skills is really amazing. They also offer tons of activities that enrich the kids' experience - music, outdoor environment, spanish. I wish I had such a well rounded education myself at that age. The kids love the program, love their teachers, love going to school. I can't speak highly enough of our experience here.
