After just 5 days they transferred it to a Rescue. The process was so secretive that Animal Control would not even tell me the name of the rescue service. After some serious digging I found out the cat had been transferred to Rover Rescue. They're almost 900 miles away even though we have several rescues within 50 miles. I immediately called Rover Rescue and found out they did have the cat and that it will be going to an adoption event this weekend. They REFUSED to tell me where the event was being held. I wasn't trying to get preferential treatment. I just wanted to have an equal opportunity to re-adopt this cat that has lived with me for the last year and a half and they refused to tell me where it was. Clearly they are not interested in getting animals back with loving families. I really hope it ends up with a good family but it was a stray I took off the streets. It had settled into our family very well. Now they are going to make the cat go through that again. It's also very concerning to me about how secretive the process is, even the name of the organization. Don't know anything about them except today's very inadequate interaction but that level of secrecy is not a good sign.

I can't tell you how much I hoped the rescue wouldn't pick her up and she'd be all mine. But Rover Rescue did come to her rescue. I called them minutes after finding out she had left the shelter. I had to leave a message and I figured I'd get the ball rolling and fill out the application. Kathy returned my call promptly we spoke about the dog. And several days later I picked up my girl from the Vet. Kathy was very helpful and thoughtful with her advice. Foxy came with a leash and a collar and we were given a bag of food to get us started. I love this organization, they do amazing work rescuing IMO the most adorable pooches. I want another one but I don't think Ms. Foxy is ready for a buddy quite yet. IMO the rescue fee is comparable and totally fair. You get a itemized list of all the fees they pay while the dog in their care. You don't have an obligation to pay those fees but it really did show me how much money it does take to save these animals.

Enlightenment seemed like an esoteric, out-of-reach goal, and not one I was necessarily interested in pursuing -- not understanding, it had always struck me as an ironically self-focused pursuit. A Zen state of mind, with balance and equanimity -- that seemed interesting. But through the people at the Torrance Zen Center I found that the Zen path is not about the mind, but very much of the heart, and all the compassion the heart is capable of. The practitioners follow the Greater Path, with the intention of helping anyone and everyone through Zen to manifest a better version of themselves. And Enlightenment? It's about helping other people. Becoming in sync with the Greatest Good, however the name given by one's language culture. While the foundational practitioners natively speak Mandarin or Cantonese, they all make a dedicated and successful effort to speak English in teaching, sharing, and casual interactions, for which I am deeply and profoundly grateful. They have graciously and continuously extended a warm, including welcome. I have occasionally felt "odd man out," but: my doing. Their generosity of heart always surges back and I relax a bit more. Shortly after beginning meditation practice, I noticed, to my surprise, that many people - some I knew and some I didn't - suddenly seemed more comfortable around me, eager to talk and share whatever was on their minds. Positive feelings and experiences began to dominate my life, all while retaining and improving family relations, growing friendships, and more easily establishing new connections with people. I have been coming to this tai chi group for years now. I started off intermittently but now I…read morenever miss a Sunday if I can help it. The calm and focus the practice provides sets my tone for the week. I've tried yoga a bunch of times but the static poses weren't for me. And sitting still to meditate doesn't work for me either. Tai chi is like a moving meditation that allows me to tune out the world and my thoughts (or at least keep trying to--it's a practice). At first, it seemed like a lot to learn, but Angie breaks down the movements step by step and reminds us that "any movement is good movement" in case people are still learning. I used to park myself right behind one of the regulars and follow him, and now I'm one of those regulars myself Even though I've been coming for years, I still find new subtleties in different parts of the form. It has also given me great balance, better than I've ever had in my life. I once took a tai chi course that met inside and was very technically precise. I so much prefer doing it outside in the park. Sometimes I wish for specific critique of my form but we do get that during the periodic intermediate/advanced classes she offers. There are generally anywhere from 25-50 people at a session. It's donation based (cash or Venmo), so free if you want to just check it out. I always give because it's so worth it to me.

Though due to the distance between the girl and I, we weren't able to attend any of of the mentor/mentee activities that took place in the South Bay. However, we made our own calendar and did our thing in the last two years such as miniature golfing, Afternoon Tea, mani/pedis , and finding new restaurants and dessert places around OC to visit every time we got together. Walk With Sally is a nonprofit organization located in the South Bay, that pairs mentors with kids whose parent had either passed away from cancer or is currently battling cancer. They are trying to branch out to other cities (when I joined 2 years ago - I was probably the first mentor that they paired with a child that was not in the South Bay.) Give them call even if you are not in the South Bay and ask if they have child near your city that you could mentor. It's such a great organization in that some of the mentors in the program were kids who had lost a parent - and as an adult they have chosen to give back to the organization that had helped them through one of the hardest times of their lives. All they ask is that you dedicate 8-10 hours a month to your mentee. It could be one day a month where you spend the day together, or a couple hours a week. Hopefully through that friendship, you'll be able to make an impact on each other's lives and make a difference. Cheers!

Walk with Sally is an organization that provides mentoring support programs and services to children (ages 7-17) who have parents or siblings with cancer. In many cases, the children in the program have one or both parents going through end stage cancer and are in need of a friend who has been through a similar trial with cancer. Having gone through the same thing at 22, when my Mom passed away after a five year battle with cancer, this has a been a touching way to give back and honor the amazing people who supported me through one of the most challenging periods of my life. Being a mentor is not only about the disease, but is one on one time with a child who for all intents just wants to be a kid. WWS organizes many events like for the mentors and mentees like ice-skating at Toyota Center, attending baseball games, star-watching at the Observatory, or just hanging out and being kids together. As we reflect on the New Year's and our goals to be more selfless and to make a change in the world, I wanted to post this business as an awareness and also as a suggestion for making a positive impact in the New Year. For requesting more information on mentorship, all you have to do is visit the website and perhaps talk with the program director Zina about attending an information session. There are children waiting for matches all throughout LA, so please don't worry about proximity to the the Torrance office. This has been a great organization and an experience that continues to give back to me much more than I could put into words or give to it. We didn't spend much time in here, literally walked in for 5 minutes and walked out but for the kids I think this is pretty neat. Not much to see in there but I do recall some jellyfish, a touch tank (or maybe you couldn't touch it? Signs were confusing), and few small tanks with fish and starfish.

DACC adopted a new philosophy expression: "Socially Conscious Animal Sheltering" in which their shelters strive to create the best outcome for all animals by treating them respectfully & alleviating their suffering with the intent to maximize their lives while balancing animal comfort & public safety. My son & I were in the neighborhood for lunch over the weekend, & saw that Carson Animal Care Center was en route home so I wanted to stop by their cat house to see if there's any kittens/cats that might be a good fit with our Lynx Point Siamese kitten that we adopted last year. There were several possibilities, but only 1 stood out, a cute 4-month old gray & white kitten; ID: A5756923. He kept meowing at us when we were near his cage, & paraded/rubbed himself back & forth in his cage... definitely wanted our attention! He reached out with his paws to tap our fingers & hands, & liked the mini rubs that we were able to give between the bars. I nicknamed him "Butter" because he just melts your heart & in your hands. He was on hold, to be released W, 02/25/26. I tried to come back before Carson Animal Care Center opens at 11:00 AM, but was slightly delayed (11:15 AM) & Butter was gone. Sad for us, but happy for him to find his fur-ever home. Yay!! I walked around to see if the previous cats had warmed up yet. Again, there were 2 cats that called out when I was near their cage... a charming 14-month old brown, black, & white female tabby with beautiful golden eyes named Sadie, & a 1-year old white & tan male domestic shorthair with gorgeous light blue eyes (similar to Snow's eyes) that is unnamed. I trekked to the front office to request interaction time & had to complete a form. By the time I received the form & returned, Sadie was adopted in a span of 10-mins; while friendly at CACC, she might be a handful at home. I waited a few minutes & no staff returned to the cat house so I went outside, & another officer pointed to another officer who could help with my interaction request. He crossed off the previous ID, & noted A5757653. The makeshift plexi-room echoed a bit so I let him explore the open space & waited for him to warm up to me. I clicked a couple of times & he came to me. This boy has a more gentle temperament, though he'll shed like crazy. He likes head & neck rubs, didn't mind me cleaning gunk from his eyes, or holding his paws/squeezing his nails too much, which means I can probably cut his nails. While rubbing against my leg, I picked him up to place on my lap & he marked my tee & jeans. I scratched him a bit more before leaving & informed the officer that I intend to adopt him. I spent almost 1/2-hr. waiting in the front office, waiting for my turn to process the adoption. I mentioned that he appears to be intact (he is) & CACC will neuter him tomorrow. I asked if it can be pushed to F, 02/27/26 due to the kids' after-school activities, & if he can be cleaned up/groomed because I won't be able to after his surgery. His coat was dirty & slightly matted, & had long, sharp nails; I'm hoping they can take care of this so he's somewhat clean coming home. There's a February adoption special... all adoptions are $14 (I'm guessing for Valentine's). Thanks for our fur baby addition, Carson Animal Care Center... we can't wait to welcome this cutie home!

I was trying to explain my situation and get assistance, but they barely listened and spoke to me in a very rude and condescending way. It felt like they had already decided they didn't want to help before even hearing me out. What made the situation even more frustrating is that they refused to take my dog without giving me any real compassion, options, or proper guidance.

Rain or shine, the workers and volunteers are always out there serving the community with smiles on…read moretheir faces! They fill a shopping basket overflowing with fresh fruit and vegetables, canned goods, dairy products, boxed and packaged items such as pastas, beverages, breads, desserts, and even eggs. You never know what you will get, but it is worth hundreds of dollars in value! They have it down to a smooth running system, with the cars coming in, getting loaded up and then exit out. The traffic gets a little backed up on the street, but that's expected. Everyone working is volunteering their time, so people waiting in their cars need to be patient and kind. In fact, why not come volunteer yourself!
